Why A Looser Dog Leash Gives You More Control
By William Beasley
For dog owners who have a dog that pulls all the time when walking, the idea that a looser leash will give you more control may seem laughable, but as ever with most things to do with dog training, the logic is there...Dog logic is not the same as human logic. Human logic involves an understanding of concepts and memory.
A dog has neither of these, and dog logic relies on instinct in the present, the here and now,
and getting your dog to stop pulling needs to work with these facts, not against them.
If you have tight leash on your dog, and are constantly pulling it back, the natural reaction for the dog is to pull against the pressure, which means he or she will be pulling against you.
So, a lot of the time, you are *causing* the dog to pull by you pulling first!
Remember that the dog has no idea of 'I'll stop pulling when you do'.
You can use that logic to a human child, but not a dog.
The best way to use a leash is to use it as a guide. The dog should be allowed to walk where it wants, and the guide is there to protect it and others from any sudden dashes, and also to indicate required change in direction.
Here's another good tip to use a looser leash to stop pulling.
As you walk along, if the dog starts to pull, turn around immediately and begin walking in the opposite direction.
This will distract the dog's attention from whatever made it decide to pull.
If it then pulls in the other direction, turn around again.
Eventually the dog won't mind, as it is still getting its' walk, and its' attention will just focus on what is in front of it, and not behind.
If you use this technique coupled with the praise technique for when the dog walks peacefully beside you, the walk will be a much more pleasant experience for all involved.
Don't expect this technique to work overnight - dogs are quick learners, but you will have to stick with it as long as it takes for the new habit to replace the old one.
Then you'll end up with a much more controlled walk while holding a looser leash.
