History

The Bergamasco originated in the Italian Alps, where it was originally used as a herding dog.

Description

Height: dogs: 58-62 cms (23-24½ ins); bitches: 54-58 cms (21-23 ins).
Weight: dogs: 32-38 kgs (70-84 lbs); bitches: 26-32 kgs (56-70 lbs).

The breed's most distinctive feature is the unusual felted coat which is a normal and healthy characteristic of the breed. Bergamascos are born with short, smooth fur, which slowly develops the characteristic mats as the dog grows. In adulthood the mats may reach as low as the dog's paws.

Character/Temperament

An intelligent dog that is cautious and patient. They make good companions and excellent guard dogs, having a strong protective instinct.

Exercise

They require a moderate amount of regular exercise.
