My thanks to Philip Shirley, Sean Farnsworth and Viv Cotton all of who help to compile the information for the year and have been kind enough to provide details.

Some exciting news from Ireland. At the Northern Ireland Show Dog of the Year where the top winning dogs, all breeds, throughout the previous year are invited the two judges Mrs A.Corish and Mr.M.Drennan found their overall winner in Marion Sloan's Phalene Ch & Ir Ch Sunshoo Imamovie Premiere thus making her Northern Ireland Show Dog of the year, 2001. An outstanding success, and I hope I can be forgiven by saying the more so for a phalene and both Marion, Maxine Moth (as Premiere is fondly known) and of course her breeders Carolyn and David Roe are to be congratulated.

I am sure everyone will be sorry to hear that Sue Jones has been unwell. Sue has not been having an easy time of it lately, husband Dai was taken ill and into hospital, although I understand he is now back home, and as I say Sue herself has been far from well. Knowing Sue the Doctor is probably not finding it easy to make her rest and recuperate and I do hope this time she will listen to the Doctor and not try doing everything. I am sure she would appreciate hearing any news from folk.

Given that from time to time the Kennel Club take many knocks, sadly many of which are often justified, it is pleasing to be able to give them some praise for outstanding efforts. Evelyn Needham's bitch Lady Susannah at Marshlea recently won her Junior Warrant (not as easy these days as it used to be)  and posted off the application form on 31 December. Bearing in mind the intervening New Year period Evelyn was delightfully surprised to receive thee certificate on January 5. You can't get better than that so may congratulations to the KC staff on this.

I must apologise for my lack of notes since the New Year.  We have been having a dreadful time over the holiday having to call out the Emergency Ambulance twice in a fortnight. On the second occasion just after Christmas my husband was taken to and admitted to the West Suffolk Hospital with suspected internal bleeding. Fortunately my son was home with us otherwise things would have certainly been too much for me on my own.  As it was there was only a skeleton staff on duty and it was all rather distressing.  Dai is now home but no definite conclusions were reached and he is being monitored by his GP, he is however very weak and tired and cannot be left on his own for any prolonged period.  It has decided us to move into Bury St Edmunds where we will not be isolated and have closer access to services.  The Wilderness true to its name is just not suitable for us any longer as we have about an acre of land and no public transport and so it is now on the market.  We will be very sad to go - it is such a lovely bungalow and superbly sited with no near neighbours - perfect for our dogs and family over the years - we came here in 1969 and it has been a very happy home.

Someone else who had a sad time in the New Year was Maralyn Clark of the Astrellita Collies who had to say goodbye to her much loved Papillon Sunshoo Imadilemma.  Only last year she had the thrill of winning Best Veteran I S with her at a local Open Show.  She was 16 yrs old and will be much missed.

Some good news from Marian Sloan, She and Maxine Moth, better known as Ch. Ir. Ch. Sunshoo Imamovie Premiere attended the N Ireland Showdog of the Year which is for top winning dogs , all breeds throughout the previous year.  It was judged by Mrs A Corish and Mr M Drennan and they were delighted to win and Maxine is now Northern Ireland Showdog Of The Year 2001.  Marian says they came home with lots of goodies from Our Dogs and Pedigree Chum and she says 'Next stop Amsterdam'

A letter on the Internet from Sue Victor in praise of the new Puppy Register which is co ordinated by Margaret Unwin.  Having been looking  for a pap and coming up only with a breeder from Wales on the Internet who was also offering a poodle and a staffie they rang the KC who gave them Margaret's number at the Puppy Register.  She put them in touch with Sue and the puppy is now settling well with its new family.  I am sure every one will be pleased to hear that this new Club initiative appears to be working.  Please forgive me if the notes do not always appear regularly for the next few months. i will do my best but some disruptions are sure to occur.  I hope 2002 will be Happier and Healthier for us all.

Young Glenn Robb is due to take part in the Pedigree Masterfoods Handling Finals to be held on the last Saturday in January at the Metropole Hotel in Birmingham. I am sure we all wish Glenn every success in this prestigious event, Glenn has kept the flag flying for the breed in the Junior Handling for some years now and it will come as no surprise to learn that this his last year as a Junior. He will be handling Jean and Roger Banfields lovely Ch Kingshaven Miss Molly.

My thanks to Joan Savage for providing some news from north of the border. Pam Taylor and Pamhurst Precious Gem took BOB and went Group 1 at Falkirk Open Show and Jean Inglis with Jaanjay Boy O Boy It's Toska took RBIS at Annandale Open Show.  And at the St Andrews & Cupar & DCS Limited Show Ann MacGregor went Best Minor Puppy in show with Pyatshaw Aphrodite and Pam Taylor went BOB and Group 4 with Pamhurst She's A Cracker  who is litter sister to Precious Gem. Cracker being one of the three sisters attacked by another dog as I reported recently has taken longer to get over the incident than her siblings but is now enjoying her showing again.

There appears to be a little confusion over the Puppy Register which the Club has set up, details were reported in the last Newsletter on page 41 so if anyone is unsure please read this again. If you still have any questions I am sure Margaret Unwin will be happy to answer these. One point already some people having given details of the puppies they have available to Margaret have not bothered to let her know when the puppies have been placed, whether through the scheme or not. This rather defeats the objects of the Register which is to assist both breeders and prospective purchasers in finding one another without having to make dozens of telephone calls. Obviously it is frustrating for prospective owners to telephone a breeder whom they have been told have puppies available only to find out they were sold a few weeks ago.  To ensure the scheme works smoothly anyone who does not bother to let Margaret know when their puppies have gone may well find themselves back to the bottom of the queue or even  unable to place future stock on the list.  So please do cooperate it will work for everyone's benefit if you do

Denise Welsh and her clever Agility dog Harley have qualified for Crufts for the second year running. She is in the mini/maxi pairs and has also qualified for the Eukanuba Agility Challenge.  She is now 8yrs old and needs one more Agility or Jumping win to become advanced and then will be able to enter the Championship classes and possibly compete for the country in Portugal. The mini/maxi event at Crufts is on Thursday 7th March and the Challenge abd mini invitation pairs is on the Friday and Saturday. Congratulations to both of you.

Some news from Scotland Pam Taylor went Group 1 at Falkirk Open Show with her Pamhurst Precious Gem and at Annandale Open Show Jean Inglis' Jaanjay Boy O Boy Its Tosca took RBIS.  My thanks to Joan Savage for this news.

Joyce Allison secretary of the S Wales Papillon Club has sent a list of new dates for the next 3 years and asks that you make notes in your diaries.  Open Show and AGM 2002 is on 14.04.02 with Ron John Judging; Championship Show 2002 is on 06.10.02;  Open Show and AGM 2003 will be on 13.04.03 with Bryn Cadogen judging; Championship Show will be on 5.10.03 with Shirley Colyer judging.  the dates for 2004 will be Open Show and AGM on 4.04.04 and Championship Show on 3.10.04 the judges will be announced later.

All these events will take place at the Club's new venue Electricity Club, Fields Park Road, Pontcanna, Cardiff. Do please note that these dates are all Sundays as it has been asked to change from Saturdays at the Venue's request.  It is also hoped that Sunday will be better for traffic as the Venue is near the Millennium Stadium and there is less likely to be a sporting event held there on a Sunday so the roads should be less congested. The Club apologises to anyone who preferred Saturdays.

We are expectin the decorators in soon so hope to keep the notes going through the inevitable turmoil!!  Please let me have all your news.

First of all I would like to thank all those who sent cards and phoned me when they heard of our misfortunes over the New Year and a special thanks to the Papillon Club for the lovely bunch of flowers which was much appreciated. Both Dai and I are much improved and Spring can't come soon enough for us, when the weather is so dull it makes one so much more depressed doesn't it !

I have very little news this week but Phillip Shirley has asked me to say that all the trophies won at last years August Open Show held at Barker Butts Rugby Club are due to be returned at or before this coming Open Show to be held at Bisley on 17th February.  Please make sure that they are available for presentation to the new winners.  It is very disappointing if trophies have not been returned.  Also, the Club would like to announce a further Points Trophy that may be competed for this year.  Known as the Graycaz Trophy presented by Caroline and Sean Lee-Farnsworth it will be awarded to the Papillon winning the most Classes at Championship Shows during the year from January to December.

There was a very interesting article on PRA posted on the Internet by the American Papillon Club.  The author is Dr Peterson-Jones who when he was at the Cambridge Vet College was the man responsible for identifying the DNA gene marker for PRA in the Irish Setter.  He is now working in USA and is trying to do the same thing for the Papillon, with luck the marker may be available sooner than we think.  The link is to be found at http://www.papillonclub.org/PapillonHealth/pra.html  I was able to download it quite easily.

Marian Sloan has been kind enough to provide a review of the 2001 Shows for Ireland. There were 9 Irish Championship Shows last year, the remainder cancelled again because of the Foot and Mouth crisis, all of which were confined to dogs resident in Ireland.

Top winning Papillon was Dolly Kavanagh's Ir & UK Ch Ch. Denemore Forbidden Treasure, winning 8 Green Stars (4 BOBs) one Group 1 and one Group 3. The remaining Dog Green Star was won by Beck's Allivom The Gay Cavaliero. In bitches Marian's Sunshoo Imastarlett won 5 Green Stars (3 BOBs) and one Group 3, and winning one Green Star each was Margaret Widera's Balamunch Rose of Sharon (with one BOB), Killeen-King's Pilipalas Magic Flute at Dolcissimo and Marian's Ch. U.K.Ch. Sunshoo Imamovie Premiere. Top Breeder for the year was Carolyn and David Roe who bred two different Green Start winners.

The finals of Pedigree Champion and Veteran stakes and the Junior Handler of the year handler of the year competition took place at the Metropole Hotel at the NEC at Birmingham where Kay Stewart's Ch Tussalud Storyteller won the Veteran Stakes. This is I believe the first time a Papillon has achieved this and not surprising perhaps that is should go to Disney as he has achieved so much success over the years in the Ring. As we all know it is not easy keeping a Papillon in tip top condition for so many years, this being a breed that can have teeth losses reasonably early, so a superb achievement for both dog and owner,

Denise Welsh will be looking forward to Crufts where her papillon Harlie will be taking part in the agility. I understand the mini/maxi is on Thursday and Harlie will also be taking part in the mini invitation pairs on Friday morning with the first round of the agility challenge later that afternoon. The second half of the agility challenge should be late Saturday afternoon,  so both are going to be very busy. Denise hopes that some pap folk will find time to be able to go along and lend their support.

Phil Shirley, who has been kind enough to take on the duties of Acting Cup Steward, has asked me to mention that all trophies won at last years August open show at Barker Butts Rugby Club should be returned for this coming open show at Wisley on the 17th February , please make sure they are available for presentation to the new winners. Phil also mentions that the Club would  like to announce a further points trophy that may be
competed for this year. Known as the Graycaz  Trophy,  kindly donated by Caroline and Sean,  it will presented to the Papillon winning the most classes at Championship shows during the year Jan - Dec

Sharon Mahoney (Mondelise) in Australia is continuing with an impressive run of wins with her imported  Ch.Queen Bless JP The Super Star (imp Japan) who took the Dog CC  with 25 points and BOB at the RNSWCC Library & Archives Committee Australia Day Show  and again took Best Intermediate in Group. Bitch CC with 10 points went to Sharon's  Aus Ch.Mondelise Silver Sails.
Our Dogs
Congratulations to Kay and Disney!! What a wonderful win for Tussalud Storyteller and Kay Stewart when they won the Final of the Pedigree Chum Veteran Stakes held at the Metropole in Birmingham last Saturday under Judge Mr Frank Kane.  Storyteller qualified  when he won his heat at Windsor Ch Show during the Summer.  What a great crown to a wonderful career that this little dog has had and what a great ambassador for the Breed he is. when I last saw him he was still looking as sprightly as when he was a puppy.

Hazel Barr has written to tell me that she has had to have her much loved Dongays Star Appeal put to sleep at the age of 17yrs.  She was Hazel's first and the boss of the gang, loved showing was a wonderful Mother who produced two RCC winners and is the grand-dam of several Champions. As Hazel says, she was very special and is sorely missed.  Like me Hazel hopes for a better year in 02 as, although she had the joy of making up her Ch Sunshoo Knight Errant Of Barallan last year Just before Christmas her bitch aborted a litter of puppies and she then had a car accident. She asks if anyone has a video of Midland Cos Ch in 2001 especially the dogs where Knight Errant was made up she would be grateful for a copy and would cover any costs involved.
Mmme Chantal Valentini won the CAC, CACIB and BOB at the Montpelier in France with Pipistrelle Mister Terriific bred by Claire Anne Ahern in Ireland.  In S Africa Eileen and Nev Bates have started the year well with a Res in the Toy Group for Lorahs Jazz Master at Julesville  Then  at the Jubilee Toy Dog Of S Africa, SA Ch Pandas Image of Bokara won B Veteran in show and BOB.  Jazz Master won the Mini Grand a competition for all RBOBs and they won dog food a set of glasses and a travelling alarm clock!!  At the AGM after the Show Eileen was asked to become Secretary of the Society - shes a glutton for punishment!! It is good to hear news of overseas successes.
