Some news from Eileen and Neville Bates in South Africa who delight in telling me that it is 31 degrees there at the moment and very sunny. They went to the first show of the new season recently and took BON and Group 2 with Kingshaven Playboy who recently received his certificate from the Kennel Union naming him as National Papillon for 2001, much to their delight and I am sure to his breeder's Jean and Roger Banfield.
Some readers will have heard of Debi Davis in the USA whose Papillon, Peek, was named National Service Dog of the Year in the USA in 1999, the first time I believe a small dog had won this prestigious award. Recently Debi was selected to act as an Olympic Torchbearer, along with her clicker service dog training associate, Barbara Handelman of Norwich, Vermont, to carry the Olympic Torch through downtown Tucson. Needless to say Debi was accompanied by Peek and her new in-training Papillon pup of 3 months--'Harry Potter. Debi has put an interesting story along with some very nice pictures of this on her web site at http://www.clickertales.com and it must have been a great honour to have been involved in this.
Jenny Marshall (Novastar) writes to tell me that an old r/w mismarked papillon was recently found wandering in Barnoldswick, Lancs and despite local searches and enquiries they have not been able to locate his owner. Jenny says he is friendly to people and his fellow kind, house trained and has not been ill treated. His walking is slow and not very good, but on the other hand he really does like his food. He would like a nice quiet home to peacefully spend the rest of his days with any amount of T.L.C. if anyone can help in locating his owner or offering him a home please contact Jenny on 01757 268213.
Jean Lawrence has also recently been in touch giving me details of two papillons which needed rehoming, fortunately both have been found good homes but it does remind us that we are sadly seeing more and more of this. Of course there is little we can do to prevent every case but I am sure we cam all do our bit in trying to ensure it happens as little as possible. Obviously even more care needs to be taken about vetting new homes as does taking precautions to ensure that pet stock is not bred from. Stud dog owners also have a responsibility. As members of the Papillon Club will know Welfare is something which the Club has given much thought to and Sue Stanbury has worked extremely hard setting up a Welfare Fund to ensure that the Club is ready to meet any problems that may arise. Sue has asked me belatedly to thank all those who helped with the Welfare Stall at the last Open Show, particularly Eileen Roberts and Chris Pougher for the delicious cakes and sweets, Margaret Unwin for the beds, bags and home made doggy biscuits all in all some $280 was raised, a super effort. Sue would also like to thank Janet Chandler for the Papillon cushion which proved a very popular raffle prize and Janet has promised to make another for the February Show. Sue would be grateful for donations of any unwanted quality items for the stall, these will be greatly appreciated and are certainly in a very important cause.
At the Garnock and District Open Show Angela Savage (one of the our well known Junior Handlers) took OB and Group 3 with her dog Abbeyton Tiger Bay, she also won 3rd out of 12 entries in the JHA class 12-16 yrs. And much to her delight she got to stand in the Utility Group with a Toy Poodle that she handled for another exhibitor.
Still in Scotland at the Bon Accord Show Alison and Caitlin Leiper took won BPIB, Puppy Group and Best puppy in Show with Graycaz Give It Up for Thello. BOB went to Neil Leiper with his Rimzim Orlando Graycaz
and he went on to take Group 2. A super day for all the family. I must say the Scottish exhibitors put the rest of the UK to shame when it comes to passing on information for the Breed Notes!! |

A letter has been received from the KC by Joyce Allison about re-registering Phalenes as believe it or not 'a coat variety' of Papillon. What world is the KC living in!? Apparently for the last 2 years this has not been possible on the KC's computer system. The information will only appear on Reg Certs, 3&5 generation pedigrees and export pedigrees. It will not appear in the Stud Book, BRS or on any other computer services. If you wish to have your Regs amended send your old certificate to the Gary Johnson Service Dept at 1 Clarges St, direct telephone:020 7518 1040. Naturally this has aroused a great deal of ire as the stupidity of referring to an ear set variation as a coat variety shows that our breed is not understood at the KC and I understand that representations have been made to the people concerned. However the most disturbing thing about this subject is that in the '70s the Papillon Club did ask and obtain permission from the KC to have regs ammended if the dog became a Phalene after I think it was 18 months. Why have they rescinded this without telling anyone? I know that the Club is investigating and will keep you up to date with events.
Some results from Scotland where Papillons are really making themselves felt, at Garnock & Dist OS Junior Handler Angela Savage won BOB and Group 3 with her Abbeyton Tiger Bay and also came 3rd out of 12 entries in the 12-16yrs JH. At the same show she handled a Toy Poodle in the Utility Group for another exhibitor. Caroline Lee-Farnsworth tells me that Alison & Caitlin Lieper won a BPIP, Puppy Group and BPIS with Graycaz Give It Up For Thello and at the same show Niel Lieper who owns Rimzim Orlando Graycaz beat Mum to win Group 2 in the Toy Group. She did not tell me which show it was but Caroline wonders what these youngsters are having in their porridge to help them have such successes!?
Sue Stanbury has asked me to thank all those who helped and contributed to the new Papillon Welfare stand at the last club show in December, it made nearly £280 and special thanks are due to Janet Chandler for her Papillon cushion which was a popular Raffle Prize and who has kindly promised to make another for the February show next weekend. Sue says that any unwanted but quality items to sell on the stall would be much appreciated and can be brought to the Show on the day.
I have just heard from Viv Cotton that Eunice Germany was operated on yesterday(Wednesday) for a new hip. She expects to be in Hospital only 6 days and they tell her she should be driving again in 6 weeks!! I know Eunice has been suffering a great deal of pain over the last months and hope all will be well and she will be back at the shows.
I have been so pleased to discover how useful the recent booklet of Papillon Club Home Members names and addresses is. It was recently issued by the Club and now lives permanently by the Computer in a strangely tidy office. I have just got rid of the accumulated papers of over 30 years and cannot believe the difference!! The famous tea trolley is empty, everything is neatly filed and I am in the middle of sorting out the Conservatory. My motto at the moment is 'Everything Must Go!' Keep the news coming as I depend on you when I am not able to be at the shows |

The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Secretary, Anne Borg, has asked me to remind members that as indicated in the AGM Preliminary Notice there is a vacancy for Show Manager as sadly Dick Terry has decided he can no longer continue with these duties. Any member who feels they would be able to serve the Club in this capacity is asked to have their nomination in by 1 March, I am sure there are a number of our members with the willingness to take on this position so do send in your nominations in time. Anne has also asked me to mention that Chris Headley has decided that she cannot continue as a Member of the Committee. Although Chris was only elected last year she has not been in the best of health and has decided that for the time being she cannot undertake her duties as well as she would wish so has reluctantly decided to stand down. Again all nominations for Committee must be received by the Secretary by 1 March.
A reminder also from the Club's Newsletter Editor, Carolyne Allward Chebsey, that copy for the next issue of the Newsletter should be received by 28 February at the latest.
The first Championship of the year at Manchester saw the Bitch CC and BOB going to Caroline Lee Farnsworth's home bred Graycaz Blissful Thinking, by Ch Caswell Copper Tiger out of Lindendale Liza of Graycaz, this being her second CC. In dogs it was a first CC for Jimmy Simpson's home bred Penang Bold Horatio who is by Penang Fable out of Penang Rosie O'Grady . Reserves went in dogs to Mrs A & Miss C Leiper's Graycaz Give It Up For Thello, by Rimzim Orlando Graycaz out of Geanzger Sofine Graycaz and bred by Caroline Lee-Farnsworth and in bitches to Mrs E & Miss K Anderson's Northlyte Tiger Lily (Ch Caswell Copper Tiger out of Adiken Wee Pepper at Northlyte).Give it Up For Thello was also Best Puppy.
One interesting item which came my way recently was news of a litter recently which produced 11 puppies, yes 11 - 7 black/white, 2 sable/white, 1 tri and 1 described, black/tan/white. This surely must be a record.
Marion Sloan sends me her apologies that when recently reporting on last years results from Ireland she omitted one Bitch Green Start which went to Mrs Pearson's Tedlyn Shining Star.
Michelle Osborne has been having a good run recently in the West Country with her Tykkydewas Twylytedancer. At the St Agnes Open Show he took BOB and Group 2 and at the same show his grandmother, Simply Sophia at Serenglade won Best Toy Veteran and went on to Best Veteran in Show. Twylytedancer continued his run of success with BOB's at the Truro Open Show and at the Exeter & County Canine Open Show and more recently again BOB at the Central Cornwall Canine Association Open Show where he also went Group 2. At this last show the Breed had a field day as Michelle's Bonifee Lady Penelopie of Tykkydewas won Best AV Puppy and the Toy Puppy Group and Simply Sophia at Serenglade again won BVIG going on to take another BVIS. |

At Manchester Ch Show Judge Rosemary Ayris found her BCC and BOB in Caroline Lee-Farnsworth's Graycaz Blissful Thinking with RBCC going to Liz Anderson and daughter's Northlyte Tiger Lily. DCC went to Jimmy Simpson's Silver tri Penang Bold Horatio with RDCC being another Graycaz, Alison and Caitlin Lieper's Graycaz Give It Up For Thello whose recent successes in Scotland I have mentioned in the Notes. He was also BPIB.
Thanks to Carolyne Alward-Chebsey I can tell you that the BOB at Westminster was Sohn & Ozeki's Ch Cadaga Civil Action who I see was bred by John Oulton and sired by his famous dog Ch Loteki Supernatural Being, BOS was Samuel's Ch Blicci's Sandra Dee OA AXJ and Awards of Merit went to Ch Cadaga Involo Standing Ovation again by Supernatural Being and also to Ch Caspian's Blue Print.
Carolyne has also asked that I tell you that the closing date for copy for the next issue of the Newsletter is 28th February. Like Breed Note writers Carolyne depends on input from all of you out there to make things interesting to readers so get writing!! |

At the recent Meeting of the Committee of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Mrs Norma Staff was invited to accept the position of President and I am delighted to say that she graciously accepted the invitation. Norma of course needs no introduction, her years in the breed and her record speak for themselves and I am sure everyone will be pleased to know that the Club has been able to honour Norma in this way.
A number of people have asked me in recent months where they can buy books on the Papillon and I suppose really for a breed like ours we are a little short on the ground in this area. There is of course Carolyn and David Roes excellent book and the Clarice Waud and Mark Hutchings book was extremely sought after, although has I believe been unavailable for some while. I was pleased to hear therefore that Barry from Rabart Fine Arts has what is believed to be the last 15 or so still available which he will have at Crufts, so for anyone reasonably new to the breed who has been trying to locate a copy of this there is the opportunity still to get your hands on one.
At the Westminster Show in the USA BOB went to Linda Sohn & Kyoko Ozeki's Ch. Cadaga Civil Action. Bred by John Oulton this three year old dog is by Ch Loteki Supernatural Being, himself a Westminster BIS Winner some years ago, out of Ch Clearlake Prima At Cadaga. BOS was Andrea Samuels Ch Blicci's Sandra Dee bred by Jane Raemy & Sven Thrysoe in Denmark. Awards of Merit went to Kathleen Hardison & Michael & Donna Garofalo's Ch Cadaga Involo, litter mate to Civil Action, and Mrs Robert E Maytag &
Annette Svennson & Judy Hearney's Ch Caspian's Blue Print, bred by Annette Svennson and by Caspian's Goldfinger out of Caspian's Sonya.
Congratulations are due to young Amy Holmes on winning the 16-18 year old section of the Young Kennel Club Junior of the Year 2001 and ending up eventual overall winner of this title. This competition requires an incredible amount of time, enthusiasm and dedication as it takes the form of a year long project based upon a diary. The juniors have to keep a detailed diary of their year in the doggy world and must also include as part of this a project which demonstrates their involvement in some specific area e.g.: welfare, fund raising, nutrition. The competition is judged by an invited panel who read through all of these diaries and award bronze, silver and gold medals in each of 3 age groups. The overall winner is then chosen from the gold medallists. A special presentation ceremony is held at Crufts and the winning entries are displayed on the YKC stand for anyone who would like to look through them. These winning diaries are then displayed by the KC in London for the rest of the year.
My thanks to Sue Victor for providing the background information here. The breed has had success before in this competition, in 1999 Sue's daughter Emma was awarded bronze medal 8-11 years. Sue and Emma spent a pleasant afternoon at the following Crufts looking through the winning entries and were amazed at the diaries which won gold awards. The overall winning entry comprised NINE ring binders full of information and beautiful illustrations. A fantastic achievement for Amy.
Sharon Monk's Aus Ch Queen Bless JP The Super Star (imported from Japan) continues his winning ways in Australia taking the CC's at the Gulgong Show Society Inc and at the Gunning AP & I Show Society although was beaten on both occasions for BOB by his kennel mate, Sharon's home bred Aus Ch.Mondelise Silver Sails. At the Gulgong Show Silver Sails took the Group and RBIS and repeated the Group win at the Gunning Show. Sharon also took Best Baby in Group at Gulgong with Mondelise TM Opera and the same award at Gunning with Mondelise Sunday Silence.
The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Clubs Open Show was extremely successful and enjoyable and it was good to see such an entry for this first time at this new venue.Best dog and BIS went to Carolyn and David Roes Sunshoo Imacaptain Scarlet with Best Bitch and RBIS to Liz and Alan Bartram's Burghbridge Our Princess, Best Puppy was Kay Stewarts Tussalud Cruella De-Ville. Congratulations to the Show Manager, Dick Terry on putting on such an enjoyable day |

Congratulations to Amy Holmes who is the Young Kennel Club Junior of The Year 2001. Amy won the 16-18yr old section representing Wales and then went on to become the overall Winner. Sue Victor says that there is a tremendous ammount of effort required as each competiter has to compile a year's Diary which includes a detailed record of their involvement in dogs and in a specific area such as welfare, nutrition or fund raising. The entries are read and evaluated by an invited panel of judges and awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze in each section and then the Overall Winner is selected from the Gold Medallists. There is a special presentation ceremony at Crufts and the dairies are displayed on the YKC stand for anyone to look through them. The diaries are then displayed at the KC in London for the rest of the year. So you can see it is an exceptional achievement on Amy's part. Joyce Alison Secretary of the S Wales Papillon Club says that they are all very proud of Amy who is a very active Committee member of the Club. So should we all be - Well Done Amy!!
At the Papillon Club Open Show judged by Irene Robb BD and BIS was the Roe's Sunshoo Imacaptain Scarlet, RBD was Anna McKnight's Sunshoo Imaknight Crusader at Daneview. BB and RBIS was Alan and Liz Bartram's Burghbridge Our Princess, RBB was Norma Staff & Pat Munn's Ch Ringlands Treasure Trove, BB Puppy and BPIS was Kay Stewart's Tussalud Cruella De-Ville.
The show was held at Bisley and reports seem very favourable about the venue and the atmosphere. The hall was good as was the Car parking and the catering was praised. I know that the Committee have tried to bring this show closer to our more southern exhibitors and it is good that it seems to have been well received.
Many of you will have met Sydel Winer who is a frequent visiter to the Shows from the States. I am sad to report that her much loved import from Joyce Dunn Am Ch Iffley Bobby Dazzler CDX has died at just under 13yrs old He was a Copper Tiger son out of Iffley Yvette and distinguished himself in the Obedience ring as well as the Beauty. He was a Sire Of Merit who also sired some Obedience Ch offspring. I know that Sydel and her husband will be devastated by his loss |

I was sorry to hear from the USA that Sydel Winer had lost her American Ch. Iffley Bobby Dazzler CDX at just under 13 years of age. Bobby Dazzler was sired by Ch Caswell Copper Tiger and was out of Iffley Yvette and was of course bred by Joyce Dunn. He was a Sire Of Merit and as well as his show champion offspring was also the sire of several titled obedience progeny. There was a very charming picture of Bobby Dazzler in our Clubs 200 Handbook.
News from Australia from the Royal Canberra Show where the Bitch CC and BOB went to G & F & M Chipperfield's Aus Ch. Betisechien Blitz Em All and the Dog CC and RUBOB to C. Colley's Aus Ch Tyrondale Red Is Right. Reserves went to P & G Hardings Aus Ch. Betisechien Cool A Mon in dogs and L. Whitby's Aus Ch. Wallabarl Elegant Emilia in bitches. Best Puppy was C. Colley's Tyrondale Star Bonus.
To Scotland where at the Garnock and District Canine Club Show Angela Savage took BOB and Group 2 with Abbeyton Tiger Bay. The following day at the Rutherglen Canine Society Angela McAlpine, who I understand is new to the breed, took BOB and Group 3 with Kylecroft Country Girl. I am sure she must be delighted with this early success and how pleasing to see newcomers being put up.
I was interested to hear the results of the Moscow Int Show `Eurasia`, apparently Russia largest show. BOB Phalene went to Int Ch Butterfly in the Night who appears to have more national titles than I could possibly repeat. BOB Papillons went to another mufti national titled dog this time Queen Bless JP Romanee-Conti. I am hoping to obtain some more information regarding the breeding of these two. I was also interested to learn that there is a new Club for the breed in Russia, the Russian Papillon and Phalene Club and again am hoping to get more information on this.
Please continue to let me have all your show and other news, you can telephone or fax me on 01469 530760 or of course write or send e-mail. Don't be shy let's hear of your wins. |

Joan Savage is really good at keeping us up to date with the Scottish Show news. She sent the results of two recent Shows, at Garnock & Dist CC Angela savage went BOB and Group 2 with abbeyton Tiger Bay while at Rutherglen CS Angela McAlpine who has just started showing her Papillon Kylecroft Country Girl won BOB and Group 3. News from Helen Verity who owns Macstrack Minuet, at just 13 months he has had another 2 BOBs and at the latest show Blackpool & Fylde Toy Dog he went on to win Group 3 to Verity's great delight
Margy Wigan has written to tell me of the successes of three generations of her dogs. At the S E Toy Dog show Fern( Murvagh Rippling Stream) passed her Gold Good Citizen Test joining her Mother Hetta( Murvagh Moonlit Waters) and grandmother Minka( Bluejays Little Pickles of Ringlands) who also hold Gold. Quite an achievement for one Papillon family. Hetta had the dreadful experience some six weeks ago of being savaged by a loose unmuzzled greyhound. Being unable to pick up all three dogs after coming to Hetta's rescue Margy bravely held on to the greyhound until its owner appeared. He agreed to pay the vet's bill but she and Hetta were very shocked and poor Hetta had two emergency visits and a course of antibiotics. The greyhound is now muzzled when in public but as Margy says they ought to be sold with a muzzle because despite their gentle nature with people centuries of breeding to chase creates an instinct to endanger small creatures and once is enough with such a powerful animal. Hetta is now fully recovered and Margy realises how lucky they both are.
