Glen Robb will be taking part in the Crufts Junior Show Handler of the Year Finals to be held on the Friday of Crufts and I am sure we all wish him every success in this competition. It will I believe be Glen's last appearance as a Junior and as usual he will be handling Miss Molly.

Quite a bit of show news to report on this week. At the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Limited Show BIS went to Carolyn and David Roe's Sunshoo Imastar Lighter with RBIS going to Mrs Thornton's Penang Typhoon at Shevid. BP was Claire and David Prest's Serenglade Sympatico.

Helen Verity's Macstrak Minuet has notched up another nice wins at the Blackpool & Fylde Toy Dog Open Show where he took BOB and BIS3.

Teresa Collins had a successful day at the S W Durham CS Open Show with her new puppy Phimeens Kay Say Rah Say Rah who at her first show at just 6 months took BPIB and won the Toy Puppy Group. She is in fact one of the litter of 11 which I wrote about recently.

Carol Scott had a good day at the Gateshead Open Show with her Ringlands Jeremy's Fax to Tanyo who won the AVNSC Puppy Class and went Best AVNSC and then went on to take the Toy Puppy Group and Group 3. Especially pleasing for Carol as this was his last day in puppy so a good birthday celebration.

Some overseas news, at the International Show held recently in Norway the dog CACIB and BOB went to Olga Engebretsen's CH Golden Leafs Archie with the Bitch CACIB and BOS going to I.Balken's Infantas Even A Vctort

I recently reported the results from the Moscow Int `Eurasia` Show  where the  BOB Phalene went to Int Ch Butterfly in the Night who I believe ids jointly owned by Vesa Toivanen of the Connection Papillons and Phalenes and Helle Viitkar of the Pamparix Papillons and Phalenes. Apparently as well as this success Butterfly in the Night has been named No 1 Showdog All Breeds in Estonia 2001, quite a cause for celebration for Phalene fanciers as well as the successful owners. I mentioned earlier I would try and find out the breeding of the two BOB winners at this show. Butterfly in the Night is by Multi Ch Vittorias Kilroy out of Connection See You In Hell. The Papillon BOB, was bred in Japan by Chie Ejima of the Queen Bless Papillons and is by Ch Lamonias Nicklas out of Ch Silenzio's Silky-Rubin. The Papillon Club of America Genetic Research Committee, which does such sterling work in raising funds for research into genetic problems including of course PRA, has had a wonderful new logo designed by the well known artist Nancy Pinke aided by Marla Gold. It really is extremely attractive featuring a black and white Papillon and a red and white Phalene gaiting side by side. The PCA has produced a number of items for sale incorporating this logo, including t-shirts, sweat shirts, tote bags etc and all the profit from the sale of these items goes towards funding the various research programmes they have initiated. One pleasing aspect is that apparently for every dollar they raise the AKC match this, so doubling their fund. I believe the cut off date for orders is 8 April and if anyone is interested in learning more or finding out how they can order please feel free to contact me and I can let you have more details. I wish it were possible to reproduce here a copy of this logo as I am sure everyone will be extremely impressed and I am quite happy to let anyone know how they can arrange ordering any of these items, perhaps we could even arrange for a bulk order if there is sufficient interest. It certainly is a worthwhile cause and in fact the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Newsletter will over the next two issues be including a couple of articles regarding the fund.

I am pleased to be able to tell you that two of Mrs Phimister's record breaking litter of 11 puppies have started a career in the showring with an encouraging debut at S W Durham CS.  Teresa Collins' bitch Phimeno Kay Say Rah Say Rah won PG, was BP and then won the Puppy Group while her litter brother Phimeno Rhapsody owned by Margaret Saunders was 3rd in PG and second in the Puppy Stakes. Staying with the North, Carol Scott of Teesdale in Co Durham took her Ringlands Jeremy Fax To Tanyo to Gateshead with no Papillon Classes and won AV Puppy, Best AV, Toy Puppy Group and Toy Group 3.  He has 2 Stakes class wins and has had Group placings at earlier shows.

At the N&E Cos Papillon Club Limited Show on 3rd March Jenny Marshall BIS and BB was David & Caroline Roe's Sunshoo Imastar Lighter, RBIS and BD was Mrs Thornton's Penang Tycoon at Shevid RBB went to Irene & Glenn Robb's Kingshaven Roxy at Gleniren and RBD to Anna McKnight's Daneview Rhythm and Blues.  B Puppy was the Prest's Serenglade Simpatico.

The show was held in a new venue at Thorpe Willoughby Village Hall about one mile West of Selby and the committee hope that this very pleasant location will be used for Ltd & Open shows in the future.  It will be used for the July Open show and, thinking of this Show, remember it is there that the photographs for the Calendar will be judged so start selecting those you think suitable as entries will close in June - I will give full details later in the year. I have just turned to March and its energetic hurdler Iwas sorry to turn over  the two dancing Papillons representing February who have cheered me up all through that gloomy month!!

I am pretty certain I know the identity of the delightful papillon who has appeared in the soap Emmerdale but will not reveal it without permission.  If I am right she has already given a good account of herself in the showring and it seems that she may well become a regular Cast Member so 7pm on ITV will be a must in future!!

I am indebted to Phil Shirley for the information  that the No1 Showdog All Breeds 2001 in Estonia is a Phalene, Multi Ch Butterfly In The Night at Connection co-owned by the Pamparix and Connection Kennels.  Isn't Estonia to host the Europaen Song Contest this year?

Some news of one of our longest Club members and a dear friend of mine whom I have not seen for years.  Elsie Old of the Ynyswyn Papillons is in her 89th year and has recently come out of Hospital after falling and breaking her hip,  a replacement has been done and Anne Borg who visited her last week tells me that Elsie is in great form and is in a very pleasant nursing home where she is very happy.  I am sure she would be pleased to hear from old friends and Hazel Fairall has given me her address which is: 10 Oxenford House, The Glebe, Cumnor, Oxford and her telephone is: 01865 865731 Elsies sight is not so good now so writing is not easy for her.  When I lived in Devon it was my practice, having started out sometime in the middle of the night, to stop at Elsie and Stanley's home in Abingdon for breakfast which was legendary.  Breakfast was the only meal which had all the family home together as Stanley and his son were on the night shift at Morris Cowley and Felicity their daughter worked during the day.  There was a big round table laden with everything you could think of and it was very tempting to stay the day instead of continuing ones journey.  I enjoyed the chat and learnt so much from them both.  Such happy days they were

Crufts over for another year, next year we have this year's BIS Judge, Pamela Cross Stern, judging the breed.

General impression seems to have been that it was an enjoyable day for the breed, a good atmosphere and a good sized ring, the one draw back being the tannoy and what appeared to be a rather unusually high number of public announcements making it a little noisy in parts. For I believe the first time we had some exhibits from overseas,  Carine Rutten with her dog Anthony, who took a second in Open Dog and Mrs  Stegforg-Dahlberg's Scan Ch Pepejas Chanty Fleur who took 3rd in Open Bitch.  Maybe next year we will see even more competition from Overseas.

Mrs K Stewart judged the breed and found her Dog CC and BOB in Jimmy Simpson's home bred Penang Bold Horatio, by Penang Fable out of Penang Rosie O'Grady, he took his first CC at Manchester this year. In bitches it was another CC for Jean and Roger Banfield's well known Ch Kingshaven Miss Molly who is by Ringlands Rupert out of Lordsrake Unforgettable for Kingshaven. Reserves went to Dolly Kavanagh's Ch Denemore Forbidden Treasure (by Ch.Ringlands Treasure Island out of  Serenglade Sophistication) in dogs and Norma Staff and Pat Munn's Lynlight Angel of Ringlands, by Ringlands Disco Dan out of Sunshoo Imanight Cap Ringlands in bitches. Best Puppy was Mary Whitehill's Amicae Rudi Bare, by Sunshoo Imapaddington Bear with Graycaz out of Kingshaven Quazy Rhythm.

The breed had some good coverage this year. The television coverage still occasionally manages to grate on one's nerves especially with the insistence of the commentators declaring Best IN Breed and Best OF Show, instead of course of the accepted Best OF Breed and Best IN Show. I still do not think the BBC has made up its mind whether it is going to present the show as a serious coverage or as a comical one and it still manages to fall half way between the two. And does anyone else get annoyed when commentating on the groups the commentators always manage to put in that extra comment on the Group Winner before the final placing thus indicating their vast knowledge??? Just once I would like to hear a commentator say 'what a cart horse, that won't get anywhere" only to see it win the Group!!! Seriously I personally thought much of all the Group Winners, I thought the standard very high and ached for the Peke who had to settle for second place, I thought him outstanding and what a personality.

Nice to see the Papillons featured in the coverage of the Toy Group at Chatsworth House, I assume the two were Ch Kingshaven Principal Boy at Gleniren and Ch Kingshaven Miss Molly but may be wrong. Young Glen Robb looked every inch the TV Star and the breed came over very well, the cat walk next Glen????

One new feature at this years Show was the Breeders Class in the Big Ring and wasn't it good to see the Papillons do so well and take a creditable 3rd. They were of course the Graycaz Papillons with Caroline (although you would not have recognised as she was showing her legs this time!!) with G. Blissful Thinking, Glen with G Green is Envy, Mary Whitehill with G Sosueme, Teresa Collins with Ch G Kiss In The Dark at Collness and Alison Leiper, who has only just started showing papillons, with G Ona Promise. Caroline I know is very grateful to the others for either returning the next day for this class or staying down at Birmingham to enable them all to compete.

In the mini Agility, Denise Welsh and her Harlie (the magnificent) had a super Crufts taking 5th in the mini/maxi pairs, 3rd in the Eukanuba final part one, 2nd in the invitation pairs and 3rd in the Eukanuba final part two. They ended up Second  Overall being beaten by 100ths of a second by a minature poodle 15" at the shoulder and Harlie at 11". A fantastic effort for such a small dog Harlie ran her heart out bearing mind that three weeks ago she was in the vets on a drip as she collapased in the field.  She had ECG's, x-rays, blood tests you name it she had it but the diagnoses was "a virus".  Denise and Harlie have been asked to take part in the final for the World Agility Championship held in Germany in October but unfortunately because of the time scale (Harlie needed her Rabies jab by 7th March) they cannot go this year as Denise was advised by her vet not to jab her because of all the strain on her system recently.

I am sure there will have been others with success to report so please let me know and I will be happy to mention it.
Our Dogs
I am so sorry that I had to miss Crufts for the first time in about 28 years.  It is such a strenuous day and I just felt that it would be too much too soon after both my and my husband's recent illnesses.  As it was I sat all the Saturday wishing I had been brave enough to go!!  Jimmy Simpson's lovely silver Tricolour was Kay Stewart's choice for BOB and DCC, this is his second ticket and I am sure he won't have to wait too long for his crown.  RDCC was  Dolly Kavanagh's new young Champion Ch Denemore Forbidden Treasure.  BCC was the lovely Ch Kingshaven Miss Molly owned by Jean and Roger Banfield and RBCC went to Norma Staff and Pat Munn's Lynlight Angel of Ringlands.  B Puppy was Mary Whitehill's Amicae Rudi Bare.  I was impressed by how quickly the results were put on to the Kennel Club's web site, they were all complete just about Saturday teatime so I did not have to wait too long to find out what had happened!!

I have heard that there was a very good atmosphere round the Papillon ring and I am sad  not to have seen all my friends,  twelve months is a long time to wait for the next opportunity!!  I felt that the BBC coverage was better in that there was not so much silly nonsense about"pampered Pooches" etc.  This must be one of the most dreadful phrases that there is about dogs and Fleet Street seems to have no better idea than to trot it out at every opportunity.

Little Dylon the tiny Papillon Puppy featured in the Papers at 10 months old and under 4" looks a little sweetie.  He is bred by Mrs Jones of the Barj kennel in Barnstaple.  I wonder what he will be when fully mature.

Denise Welsh and her wonderful Agility dog Harlie had a fantastic Crufts with the resulting placings.  They came 5th in the Mini/maxi pairs, 3rd in the Eukanuba final part one, 2nd in invitation pairs and 3rd in the Eukanuba final part two.  What a great effort for such a little dog and Denise says that ony three weeks ago she was on a drip at the Vets as she had collapsed.  They don't come much braver than Harlie!! They have been asked to take part in the Final for the World Agility Championships to be held in Germany in October but unfortunately because of not having her rabies injection at the correct time she cannot go.

The Northern and Easter Cos Papillon Club has a new Secretary, He is John Edson a long standing member of the Club and the Committee, his address is: The Butterflies, 18 Mill Lane, Ryther, Tadcaster, N Yorkshire  LS2 9EG Tel: 01757 268213 I wish him well in what is always a very taxing job
March 2002
Dog World I was sorry to hear recently of the loss of two well known Papillons. Isobel Urquhart has lost her old boy Ch Blackpark Buccaneer at just a little over 18 years of age. Buccaneer had a successful show career as well as producing some lovely offspring included in which was of course Ch Blackpark Flash Gordon. His maternal grandsire was Ch Baluch Little Shenandoah himself born in 1966, just two generations back a link with so many years ago.

Rosemary Ayris too has recently lost one of her old boys, Ch Caswell Court Jester at just under 15 and a half years old. Court Jester, bred of course by Jenny Scovell and her late mother, was Rosemary's second champion in the breed, and amongst his many successes in the ring was BOB at Crufts in 1993.

Elsie Old has recently been in hospital following a fall in which she broke her hip.I am sure she would love to her from all her old friends in the breed and that a card or two would cheer her up, her address is 10 Oxenford House, The Glebe, Cumnor, Oxford.

Papillons have certainly been getting some publicity of late. As well as the new resident in Emmerdale Farm, such a pretty tri colour bitch and so well behaved, there was in the news recently details of what is reported to have been the 'smallest dog in the world' . Sue Morrell tells me that this little dog, called Dylan, is owned by Barbara Jones of the Bark affix. Sue says he is absolutely gorgeous, full of energy and a real character, unafraid of anything, isn't that often the way with the tinies. Barbara has apparently had a number of invitations to show and talk about Dylan on the media including from Richard and Judy no less!!! Of course we Papillon folk know only to well how charming and wonderful this breed is, a secret we all try hard to keep and perhaps it is not surprising that sooner or later the secret would come out. I am sure that others like me have had an increase in the number of enquiries for puppies following all this publicity and as Sue rightly says we must all be even more careful when selling puppies, perhaps wanting one because they have been seen on TV is not always the best reason to want one.

At the Irish Kennel Club, annual St. Patricks Day show the Dog Green Star and BOB went to Dolly Kavanagh's Ch Denemore Forbidden Treasure with the Bitch GS going to Dolly's Snow Lord Swiss Maid for Serenglade from the puppy bitch class. Reserves went to Mr. & Mrs. D. Feorlig's Kingshaven Party Goer at Feorlig in dogs and Mrs. H. Hoffin's  Balamunch Sweet Memory in bitches.

Jan Roosens of the Costalina Papillons in Belgium is delighted that  is proud to announce your  that Kingshaven Quicksilver de Costalina, bred of course by Jean and Roger Banfield, has gained his French Title.  Quicksilver already boasts the proud title of World Champion.

At the recent International show in Malmö the CAC, CACIB and BOB went to Ch Whispering Valley Enchanting Dream  owned and bred by Monia Wergård with the Bitch CAC, CACIB and BOS going to Kaj Ganger's Caratoot´s Complete Charisma

Our Dogs
At the St Patrick's Day Ch Show in Dublin BOB, CACIB and DGS went to Dolly Kavanagh's UK Ch Denemore Forbidden Treasure and the BGS also went to Dolly's Snow Lord Swiss Miss for Serenglade who was the Bitch Puppy winner so I think must also have taken BPIB.  RGSD was the Feorlig's Kingshaven Party Goer, CACIB and RGSB was Mrs Hoffin's Balamunch Sweet Memory.  Michael Coad was the Judge.

The Scottish Papillon Club also held its Open Show on St Patrick's Day with judge Amanda Bruce-Jackson who found her BIS and BD in Caroline Lee-Farnsworth's Graycaz Green Is Envy, RBIS, RBD and BPIS went to Mary Whitehill's Amicae Rudi Bare.  BB was Joanna Green's Rimzim Kiera and RBB was Elizabeth Patrick's Ch Volpecula Flos Campi.

I an sad to tell you that Rosemary Ayris has lost her Ch Caswell Court Jester at 15 yrs 5 months old.  I know that she , David and Jenny will be very upset and they will have all our sympathies.  The old ones leave such a gap behind them

A little while ago I wrote about the old papillon found wandering which Jenny Marshall (Novastar) had taken in and that Jenny was trying to find its owner. Unfortunately he was never claimed however the good news is that Jenny has been able to find him a lovely new home. Apparently a lady who had previously had Shih Tzu's and had recently lost her last one read about this in the notes and contacted Jenny.  Jenny took 'Snowy' as she had called him to meet his new owner and it was immediately apparent that each had taken to the other. The lady told Jenny that over the years she had had 13 dogs and Snowy would be her 14th, so she had decided to call him Louis the 14th. A friend of Jenny's lives nearby and has since visited on a number of occasions and reports that Louis is doing extremely well, indeed he has got a new lease of life, so a very  happy ending for one little dog. Jenny of course is the Club's Area Rep for Yorkshire and this shows how lucky we are to have such people who are so willing to help out in such cases, perhaps we all too often do not appreciate the work such people do.

At the Papillon Club of Scotland Open Show where Amanda Bruce-Jackson (Tijuana) was judging Best Dog and BIS went to Caroline Lee-Farnsworth's Graycaz Green Is Envy. RBIS and BPIS was Mary Whitehill's Amicae Rudi Bare.

Many of us have copies of Carolyn and David Roe's Book of British Papillon & Phalene Champions covering the period 1925 to 1998 and find them extremely useful in looking back at old pedigrees. Carolyn and David have now brought out an update covering the 27 champions made up during the period 1999 to 2001 together with of course a new index to make it easier to find those pedigrees. The updates are available from Carolyn and David at a cost of £6 (inclusive of postage and packing) and can be obtained from them at Corner Oak, Old Wood, Skellingthorpe, Lincoln LN6 5UA tel 01522 66737.

At the Sydney Royal where the judge was Mr. H Lehtinen from Finland Bitch CC and BOB went to C. Hunt's Ch. Kyryndaley Midnight Lace, Dog CC and RBOB was Kirsty Lewis's Grand Ch. Cavashon Red Hot, Reserve went to J. Dickinson Franks' Ch. Treschic Le Sarabande in dogs and B. Wray-Pattinson's Ch. Fluttaby Copper Tiger in bitches. Best Puppy was J. Campbell Williams' Maisongabbi Like Magic who also took the Toy Puppy Group.

The Papillon Club of New Zealand recently held an Open Show where some 30 dogs were entered (15 of each sex) BIS went to Mrs C. Jefferies-Long's Kowhai Jacob, RBIS to Miss C Jefferies' Ch Kowhai Valentine Rose and BPIS to Mrs N Jones'  Delzet  Oriella.

Norma Staff was pleased to hear some news from Genji and Kyoto Ozeki in Japan telling her of the latest successes of Jap Ch Ringlands Gambling Syrup. At his last two shows he took the R King award at the Tajebayashi-Daichi KC Show under Minoru Fujita and the following day took the King Award at the Satima West Combined Show under Junzho Hara. Genji mentioned that the FCI International Show will shortly e held and I hope to have the results available for passing on.

Congratulations to Caroline Lee-Farnsworth on her great win in the Breeders Stakes at Crufts.  They looked wonderful on TV and to be placed third in that company was a great honour.  All we Papillon people however were able to share a further delight - that of seeing Caroline in a skirt thus confirming she has legs!!  Maybe if she showed them more often the BBC could be persuaded to give us even more coverage!!  Only joking Caroline.

John Edson the new Secretary of N&E Cos Pap Club has asked me to tell you that there has been a change of date for this year's Ch Show.  It will now be held on 10th November instead of 3rd.  The venue remains the same - Snaith Sports Hall.   John also says that the old dog which he and Jenny found wandering on the Lancs/Yorks borders was never claimed but has been successfully rehomed with an elderly lady living in a remote Yorkshire dale and is restored to health and very happy.  Its a lovely story and I hope you will read all about him in a later Newsletter.

Jackie Meears of Bluejays Papillons and Chairman of the S Wales Pap Club has been having a very rough time recently with her arm and hand which was originally injured in an accident at work.  Today she is undergoing her third operation on it and she has daily physiotherapy.  She has not been able to drive for some time and has not been able to attend shows.  I hope this last op will see some improvement Jackie.

You will recently have received voting papers from S Wales Pap Club for the Judge for the Ch Show.  This year is to be an all rounder and a Breed Council Judges list is enclosed for your guidance however there is one Specialist's name on it - that of Mrs Fouracres.  This is the present name of Pat Challis of the Sercaroff Papillons and Co Author with Clarice Waud of the Original Butterfly Dog book so she is most definitely a Specialist.  Joyce Alison has asked me to point this out.

Malcolm Green is having an Exhibition of Drawings and Paintings from 8th to14 April at Wyllyotts Centre Gallery, Darkes Lane, Potters Bar.  The private View is on the morning of 9th. He is our own special artist and as you know very gifted.

Now for a success story,  Margaret Unwin who has been running the newly fledged Puppy Register has been so successful that the supply of puppies has dried up!!  So if you are looking for a buyer for a little one register it with Margaret as soon as you can. For each puppy sold Margaret asks for a minimum donation of £5 which goes to the Welfare/Rescue fund. A truly worthwhile cause and not much to ask for the service.
