The funeral of Freda Colebrooke (formerly Freda Churchill) of the Jadedoran Papillons will take place 2.30 p.m. on Friday 12 July at Durrington Cemetery in Sussex. Donations rather than flowers have been requested by the family, two thirds of which will go to the hospice where Freda was looked after and the remaining third to the Canine Defence League. Donations can be sent to the undertakers, Dillistones at South Farm Road, Worthing, E Sussex.
The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club is to bring out a new Handbook which will be published in time for Crufts 2003. Next year of course is the Club's 80th Anniversary and it is intended to mark the occasion by producing a very special edition. For the first time Colour pages as well as black and white will be available and I think most people will agree that colour adds so much to these publications. Joint Editors are Alan Bartram and Sue Morrell and they have produced a very useful set of instructions laying out requirements etc and copies of these can be obtained from them, telephone Alan on 01189 815996 or Sue on 01823 277722. These instructions should answer most people's questions but if you are unsure about anything you can of course speak to either of them. They have also been able to arrange a contact name at the printers who will be more than happy to provide any advice advertisers may need with regard to their advertisements.
A colour page will cost £85 and black and white £30 to include up to two photos per page, additional photos at £5.00 and £2.50 respectively. Those members who advertised in the 2000 Handbook will receive a reduction of £7 for each page they took in that production, i.e. if you took 3 pages in the 2000 Handbook you will get a reduction of £21. Closing date for copy will be 14 October after which no copy can be accepted so make sure you do not miss the closing date. As I say Alan and Sue have produced a very helpful set of instructions so if you have not got a copy contact Alan or Sue.
I understand there are some very interesting ideas that Alan and Sue have for the production both in the form of text articles and design and it indeed promises to be a very special edition so I am sure no one will want to miss out on this. Having been involved over the past few years with the publishing of a number of similar productions I would urge all prospective advertisers to give a great deal of thought to the layout of their pages. Colour as I say lends so much to an advert, particularly for a breed such as ours with such a variety of attractive colourings and markings, and don't forget the more text you put in the less space available for the photographs. As the old saying goes a picture paints a thousand words. It is best to resist the temptation I feel to put in a great deal of text listing all wins when this reduces the size of the photograph to too small a size. I am sure there is going to be a great deal of interest so book early and start thinking about those pictures now.
At Windsor Bitch CC and BOB went to Irene Water's Vella Ennis whose breeding I have recently given. This was Ennis third CC thus giving her her title subject to KC confirmation, congratulations to her owner whose first champion I believe this is. Ennis, who also took BOB, was of course bred by the late Toni James and I am sure there must have been many around the ringside who were thinking how sad it was that Toni could not have been there to enjoy the success, I know she would have been very proud and am sure she was looking down with that huge smile on her face especially when Ennis went on to take Group 2. Dog CC went to Caroline Lee Farnsworth's recently crowned Ch Graycaz Green Is Envy, again his breeding has recently been given in these notes. Reserves went to Ann Stevens Tawzan Fun and Fancy Free in dogs and Irene and Glenn Robb's Gleniren Jump 'N' Jive in bitches, she also took BP.
It is to be hoped that next year Windsor will provide the breed with a specialist judge, since regaining CC's at this show I believe three years ago we have had three non specialists, two of which of course have been Peke specialists, and indeed prior to that there have I think in the last 10 years or so only been three breed specialists. Perhaps one can understand when we lost CC's there for a few years why we were not allocated specialists so often, although if my memory serves me correctly even in those years there were reasonably good entries, but certainly when CC's were available the entry surely justified a more frequent use of specialists. What is also a little disappointing is that on occasions the judge elect has had other breeds to judge, again I know this sometimes cannot be helped but with the entry our breed brings in it is questionable as to why this has been so often the case.
Some belated success to report from Blackpool where Lena Jones won the Special Beginners "Bannerdown Stakes Class" on the day, many congratulations to them both for another good success for the breed.
A delighted Sharon Mahoney (Mondelise) from Australia has let me know that at the Blaxland-Glenbrook Kennel Club Show her home bred Aus Ch Mondelise Silver Sails took Bitch CC and BOB, the Toy Group and ended up Best Australian Bred Exhibit in Show. This was Silver Sails 14th Group, 8 of which have been won this year. Dog CC and the show went to Diana Rowe's Aus Ch Dubalbow Fortune Cookie.
Finally I hear one well known male member of the committee was heard to be going around at Windsor asking folk if he had given them one. Any ideas who this was?? Answers on a postcard please.

At Windsor Ch Show Rainer Vourinen gave BCC and BOB to Irene Walters Vella Ennis, I think this is her third CC and I am sure that her owner is delighted with what I think is her first Champion, her breeder the late Toni James would have been so pleased. Congratulations. RBCC was Glenn and irene Robb's Gleniren Jump N' Jive who was also B Puppy. DCC went to Caroline Lee-Farnsworth's Ch Graycaz Green Is Envy with RDCC going to Jackie Hughes and Karen Farrell's Bluejays Artful Dodger. Jackie has had a great deal of sadness just recently having just lost her Father and is still suffering with her arm after five operations so I hope this cheered her up a little. Vella Ennis then went on to be Group 2.
News from Don and Sharon Mahoney in Australia where their Ch Mondelise Silver Sails Won Best Toy Group and Best Australian Bred In Show at Blaxland-Glenbrook KC. This was her 14th BIG and her 6th this year.

The funeral of Freda Colebrook (formerly Churchill) of Jadedoran Papillons will take place at 2.30p.m on Friday 12th July at Durrington Cemetary in Sussex. Donations rather than flowers are requested and two thirds of these will go to the Hospice which cared for Freda the remainder will go to the Canine Defence League, Donations can be sent to the undertakers, Dillstones at South Farm Road, Worthing, E Sussex.
To all those who have kindly enquired about my health, the shingles are gone except for an intermittent itch on my face and neck but the Bell's Palsy is still with me and as my eye is affected I still cannot drive. Still it is a great relief to be out of so much pain.

The World Show recently took place in Amsterdam where there were a few UK visitors, Phil Shirley, Deirdre Ashdown and Caroline Woods-Cox I know attended. The judge for Papillons was Mrs. R. Sporre-Willes from Sweden and she awarded the CAC and CACIB with BOB to L. Sohn and Kyoko Ozeki's Am Ch Cadaga Civil Action from of course the USA. Bred and handled by John Oulton he is sired by the well known Am Ch Loteki Supernatural Being out of Clearlake Primadonna. The Bitch CAC and CACIB went to Pepejas Chanty Fleur from Sweden bred and owned by Marie Stegfors Dahlberg and by Sabamores Colorful Memory out of Pepejas Celebration
Phalenes were judged by Mrs. M.H.R. Silverentand-Hazen from Holland who awarded the CAC and CACIB with BOB to Sorsery Barclay bred by Galina Ujomova and owned by P Hämälainen, he is by Connection Getting Serious out of Pamparix Charmant Blanche. The Bitch CAC went to Up and Down's Agnetha bred and owned by Carine Rutten she is by Skymningen's Nicholas out of Babe Mercedes v. Coshira. She did not get the CACIB, I assume because of her age as she came from the Junior Class, the CACIB and RCAC went to Yasmin v.d. Klaverbeek bred and owned by P. de Bruyn & D. v. Hecke and by Walzerkönig v. Martinsdank out of Xindi v.d. Klaverbeek. I see from the results that Marion Sloan's Ch Sunshoo Imamovie Premiere took second in the Champions Class to the CACIB winner Yasmin with an excellent grading.
At Paignton another Champion was made up being Rosemary Ayris' home bred Ibstock Marksman who is by Ch Ibstock Mark of Distinction out of Tussalud Miss Terrie Belle. Many will recall Marksman as a youngster doing so well in the ring and then being quite poorly for a while so I am sure his success means even more to Rosemary. Bitch CC went to Caroline Lee Farnsworth's Ch Graycaz Blissful Thinking and the Reserves went to Carolyn and David Roe's Sunshoo Imacaptain Scarlet in dogs and their Sunshoo Imastarlighter in bitches. Best Puppy was Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's Burghbridge Temair for Temelora bred by Liz and Alan Bartram.
Some belated news from Windsor where in the Puppy Stakes Class on Toy day two papillons were short listed in the final nine, one of these (sorry I do not have the name of the other) was Cheryl Lockett's Cheryldene Xavier who was awarded third place and was the highest placed Toy puppy. A nice win for him to celebrate his 'coming of age' as he was 12 months old on the day.
Also a Windsor Chris Coffey lost a pair of binoculars in a carrying case, she thinks she may have left these around the Pap ring, or they fell out of her bag at the ringside. If anyone saw these or picked them up please contact Chris on 01234 720910.
Irene and Glenn Robb's 9 month old puppy bitch took BPIB and BOB at the Cheshire Agricultural Show and went on to win both the Toy Puppy Group and the Toy Group. A nice success following her BPIB at Windsor along with which she got the Reserve CC. |

Paignton Ch Show took place in bright sunshine with Jack Mitchell judging, he gave DCC and BOB to David and Rosemary Ayris' Ibstock Marksman and as this was his 3rd CC he is now our latest Champion- Congratulations! RDCC was Caroline Roe's Sunshoo Imacaptain Scarlet. BCC went to Carolyne Lee-Farnsworth's Ch Graycaz Blissful Thinking and RBCC was Caroline Roe's Sunshoo Imastarlighter B Puppy was Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's Burghbridge Temair for Temelora.
The World Show Papillon BOB was Sohn & Ozeki's USA Ch Cadagas Civil Action handled by John Oulton. BB was Stegfors-Dahlberg's Ch Pepejas Chanty Fleur and B Puppy was Siljans Carmencita. BOB Phalene was Hamalainen's Fin Ch Sorsery Barclay BB was Ruffen's Up And Down Agnetha and B Veteran was Roijen & Roijen-Neuteboom's Ch Pedro v. d .Herbout. I do not think there were any phalene puppies there.
News of the proposed New Handbook, Alan Bartram and Sue Morrell who are producing it say that arrangements are well in hand to have it out for Crufts 2003. they suggest that you get your photographs taken in good time . For the first time Colour photographs as well as B/W will be possible. All members are being sent details and an Order Form to place an Advert. Those who are not members but who wish to advertise are very welcome to apply for membership. Please contact either Sue or Alan with any questions or extra Order Forms. There will be a Members Pets Section and every advertiser will receive a copy of the Handbook. I will let you know more information as soon as I get it.
Carol Hatch has been told of an advert in a friends local paper and like her I am publicising it in the hope that someone may get their dogs back. It reads: 'Lost from the Regents Park area of Lower Darwen Lancashire on 27th June a B/W papillon Dog and a R/W Papillon bitch. Inform 07813 907404 or 01254 51394.
Another nice win for Glenn and Irene Robb's 9mths old Gleniren Jump 'N Jive who recently was RBCC and B Puppy at Windsor, at the Cheshire Ag Show she was Toy Group and Toy Puppy Group winner under judge Eleanor Bothwell. |

The Funeral of Freda Colebroke (Churchill) (Jadedoran Papillons) took place on 12 July Durrington Cemetery. The service was held in the small chapel which was crowded with family and friends, Freda's husband Ray spoke very movingly of their life together and this was followed by a very moving tribute by Freda's son .There were many lovely floral tributes including a beautiful spray from The Papillon (Butterfly Dog ) Club. The club was represented by Philip Shirley and Rosemary Espie. To Ray Colebroke and all Freda's family we send our condolences
As many folk will know from last week's notes Tony Evans passed away on Sunday 14 July after a period of illness which he had borne with great courage. A quiet, private man, his long association with the breed may perhaps come as some surprise to newer members, some of whom will have only known Tony through his partnership with Jenny. The older members amongst us will of course also have known Tony when he carried his own Syl-E-Dor prefix and will recall him exhibiting in the ring including quite some years ago a phalene with some success, Ibstock Amadeus bred by Rosemary Ayris. The funeral is to be held on Friday 19 July at the Charter Chapel of the Canley Crematorium, Coventry where the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club will be represented by one of its Vice Presidents, Bubbles Wood Davis. Our condolences and thoughts go out to Jenny at this saddest of times and I am feel sure she will gain great comfort knowing that so many of us in the Club will be holding her in our thoughts.
At the East of England Championship Show a minutes silence was held at the ringside before judging began in Tony's memory. Mark was judging which meant that I had what has, of late, become an unusual opportunity for me to actually sit at the ringside and look at the dogs. Of course as everyone will (I hope) agree one cannot totally assess dogs from the ringside and what may please one visually at a quick glance may not necessarily do so on a closer inspection so obviously any thoughts I had must be tempered with this understanding. Nonetheless there were a number there which I personally found pleasing and I was I must admit pleased to see more black and whites coming through, I had had some fears that we were losing our black and whites. I did however find a number things which disappointed me personally, there were what looked to me to be quite a number of pleasing dogs which moved I thought quite poorly and it was suggested to me that perhaps in some cases the reason may have been lack of exercise and maybe over confinement. Whether that is so or not I do not know but I would hope not, just because a papillon is a toy dog and a show dog does not mean it should not enjoy the freedom to run about and play and I do hope that the 'rumour's I hear about dogs being confined more than they should to protect show coats or fringing etc are untrue. Unsoundness is usually due to one of two reasons, the dog itself is unsound or the dog is not properly exercised, you may not be able to do much about the former but you certainly can about the latter. I did also think that there were more light eyes than I have seen for a while and clearly something which needs watching. Like any fault it needs to be taken into consideration with the rest of the dogs virtues and faults, and an otherwise good dog with slightly light eyes may perhaps be forgiven when judging and indeed when one decides to show the dog, but clearly something which we should all bear in mind when breeding on.
The same perhaps can be said for feet, a hare foot is one of the joys of our breed, again a not perfect foot is perhaps no reason to ignore an otherwise outstanding exhibit, but breeders should ensure that these finer points do become 'entrenched' within their line. Whilst sitting at the ringside I met an old friend in another breed, someone we had known for over 30 years and whilst not in our breed as a toy specialist had always taken a keen interest in the breed. She expressed to me that she felt size was perhaps a more noticeable issue than ever, she said to me that whilst she had over the years always realised that we did have quite a big range for size in our standard she felt that these days quite a number of the larger ones seen in the ring were larger all round, that is to say did not carry the fineness and elegance that the taller ones had in the past. She felt that the breed had become far more coat orientated than it had been in the past and that too many were carrying the wrong type of coat, not the fine silky coat the standard calls for and which had been one of the breed's joys but a more stand off woolly type of coat and that often this in itself added to the lack of elegance on some.
I have to say I have some sympathy with some of those views, the breed does appear to be changing as a whole and a number of those points still within the standard seem to be in danger of becoming overlooked and accepted as being of less and less importance. Perhaps as far as the coat question is concerned the reason is that more and more importance is given to what happens in the group rather than in the breed ring, a heavy coat even if of the wrong texture and type can appeal to a Group Judge looking perhaps more for glamour than these finer points. I say all this not to provoke 'outrage; but perhaps to get some dialogue underway, and I would welcome comments from anyone, particularly those successful breeders and exhibitors of the past few years or so.
Bitch CC, her second, and BOB went to Liz and Alan Bartam's Burghbridge Our Princess with the Dog CC going to Dolly Kavanagh's Ch Denemore Forbidden Treasure, details of both of whom have recently been given in these notes. Reserve Dog CC was Queenie Bruce and Amanda Bruce-Jackson's Ch Tijuana Minstrel and Reserve Bitch CC to Ruth and Doug Johnson's Bonifee Sophisticated Lady, bred by Josie and John Mann, I understand her 9th Reserve CC to go with her two CC's she already has to her credit!!!! Best Puppy was Eileen Robert's and Miss C Smith's Inixia French Resistance, bred by Sue Stanbury. |

I have just heard that Tootsie, the Emmerdale Papillon who belongs to Linda Woodrow met the Queen today!! During her Jubilee tour the Queen went to Harewood House near Leeds and visited the set of Emmerdale which is built in the grounds. There Tootsie was introduced to Her Majesty by Shirley Stilfox who plays her owner Edna in the soap. Tootsie is the name used by Lynflier Perfect Lady who has had a good few wins in the showring and Linda says she enjoys her acting role. Although Linda was present today she did not meet the Queen - only her dog had that honour!! |

Sue Victor has asked me to mention that the annual Young Kennel Club camp takes place from 3 - 9 August. This is a residential training camp for aspiring juniors in all canine disciplines. The papillon flag will be flying, with Emma Peters, Sophie Langdon, and Emma McLaughlin all attending. They (and their paps) will receive training in show handling, obedience, agility and flyball....along with seminars on more unusual subjects like canine first aid, search and rescue, and the role of the dog warden. For the adventurous, there will be gundog training and heelwork to music!! This is a great opportunity for the juniors to show that they and their papillons are not just pretty faces!!
At the Irish Ladies Kennel Club 20th July 2002 Dog Green Star and BOB went to Dolly Kavanagh's GB CH Denemore Forbidden Treasure, Bitch Green Star to Margaret Widera's Balamunch Sweet Memory, RGSD to
Mr. & Mrs. R. Beck's Allivom the Gay Cavaliero and RGSB to Dolly's Snowlord Swiss Maid for Serenglade. Forbidden Treasure went on to take the Toy Group.
Peter & Patricia Greiff were pleased to hear from Ireland that at the All Ireland Toy Dog Championship Show
one of their exports, 'Pilipalas Magic Flute at Dolcissimo' (sire: Pilipalas Othello's Cello ex Bonifee Sweet Charity for Pilipalas) took the Bitch Green Star & BOB and at the same show Pilipalas Debussy's daughter 'Dolcissimo Make Your Mark' took the RGS at only 9 months of age. The news could not have come at a better time as Patricia had just returned from a spell in hospital.
At South Wales Carolyn and David Roe managed the double taking the dog CC and BOB with Ch Sunshoo Imacaptain Scarlet whose breeding I have of course given very recently and . Bitch CC with Daneview Dainty Roxanne at Sunshoo. Roxanne of course was bred by Anna McKnight and is by Ringlands Erik the Red at Sunshoo of Ch Graycaz Wont You Come Home to Daneview and this is I believe her second CC. Reserves went to Jimmy Simpson's Penang Bold Horatio in dogs and Cheryl Lockett's Cheryldene Xclusive in bitches. BP was Pearl Peacock's Shamal Masquerade Alcala.
Many of us will have seen the star of Emmerdale, Tootsie as she is known in the series (or Sky as she is known to her family) and I was delighted to receive a telephone call from her owner to give me some news. Like many of us I have wondered who she was and have admired her not only for her acting skills(!) but also because she is such a lovely specimen of the breed. Understandably her owners are a little shy of publicity but they were able to let me know that recently when HM The Queen visited the set of Emmerdale and was presented to the cast, the lady who play's "Tootsie's" owner insisted that "Tootsie" be with her when she met the Queen. The actress and "Tootsie" have apparently become firm friends and Sky (confusing isn't it?) always enjoys her times on the set with her. Apparently she was a model of good behaviour (Tootsie that is not the actress!!) |

Sadly I have to tell you that Tony Evans of Sylador Papillons passed away on 14th July. He had been receiving treatment for Leukaemia in Hospital but it proved to be unsuccessful. Tony was the dear companion of Jenny Scovell and was closely involved with showing her Caswells. He was one of the kindest and gentlest of men and I never remember him criticisng anyone in all the years I knew him. I shall miss his calm presence at the shows and I know Jenny must be devastated. The funeral will be held tomorrow,19th July, at Canley Crematorium, Coventry.
Two Ch Shows to report on this week SWK on 13th with Anne Horan judging was another DCC and BOB for Caroline Roe's Sunshoo Imacaptain Scarlet with RDCC going to Jimmy and Dorothy Simpson's Penang Bold Horatio, BCC was the Roe's Daneview Dainty Roxanne At Sunshoo with RBCC Lockett's Cheraldene Xclusive. B Puppy was Pearl Peacock's Shemal Masquerade Alcala.
On 17th Mark Billinghurst judged at East of England and his BCC and BOB was Alan and Liz Bartram's Burghbridge Our Princess with RBCC going to Ruth Johnston's Bonifee Sophisticated Lady. DCC was Dolly Kavanagh's Ch Denemore Forbidden Treasure with RDCC Queenie Bruce and Amanda's Ch Tijuana Minstrel. B Puppy was Irene Roberts and daughter's Inixia French Resistance. I was sorry not to be able to be at what is my local Ch Show but I still am not safe to drive as my eye is still not right.
Karen of the Bluejays papillons rang to correct my report of Windsor It was not their dog which won the RDCC but Anne Stevens' Tawzan Fun And Fancy Free. My apologies to all concerned!!
Philip Shirley has sent me the following " 12/07/02 Freda Colebroke (Churchill) (Jadedoran Papillons) was buried today at Durrington Cemetry, the service was held in the smsll chapel which was crowded with family and friends. Freda's husband spoke very movingly of their life together and this was followed by a very moving tribute by Freda's son. To Ray Colebroke and all Freda's family we send our condolences"
You should all have received the notice and Order Form for the proposed Handbook by now, if you have not, contact either Alan Bartram or Sue Morrell |

Next year sees the 80th Anniversary of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club and the Committee are working on making the Club Championship Show a special event. Already there are some very interesting ideas that have been put forward. There seems to be quite a bit of interest from Overseas for the show and it is hoped that we will be able to see quite a number of overseas members visiting the show, who knows maybe even exhibiting. Already one or two members from overseas have offered to donate special trophies, hopefully we will get more offers. Of course UK members too may be interested in donating special trophies or class rosettes or anything else and this would be very welcome, if you are please get in touch with the Cup Steward Philip Shirley. Hopefully as the months roll on I will be able to give more definite news of what is being planned.
At Leeds Dog CC and BOB went to Caroline Lee-Farnsworth's Ch Graycaz Green Is Envy with the Bitch CC to Carolyn and David Roe's Daneview Dainty Roxanne at Sunshoo, bred by Anna McKnight and Ringlands Erik the Red at Sunshoo of Ch Graycaz Wont You Come Home to Daneview this was Roxanne's third CC thus giving her her title. Reserves went to Rosemary and David Ayris' recently crowned Ch Ibstock Marksman in dogs and in bitches to Mrs Thornton's Penang Small Talk to Shevid. Best Puppy was Chris Pougher's Rayol Jasmena of Chriskadu.
The Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club's Open Show was held at a new venue of Thorpe Willoughby Village Hall, where BIS went to Sue Victor & Emma McLaughlin's Pinelan Amaryllis with RBIS going to David and Rosemary Ayris with Marksman. Best Puppy was Mrs Austin & Mrs Thompson's Jhanakia Monarch of the Glen.
Cheryl Lockett had some exciting news from Australia where Cheryldene Double Oh Seven just one day out of quarantine took the Dog CC and BOB at the NSW Toy and General Show held in Sydney and was short listed to the final 6 in the Toy Group giving him his first 18 points towards his Australian title. Double Oh Seven is now owned by Lynne Connell -Larvik Papillons in Australia. |

At The All Ireland Toy Dog Ch Show on 13th July Pilipalas Magic Flute At Dolcissimo won the BGS and BOB and at the same show Pilipalas Debussy's daughter, Dolcissimo Make Your Mark took the RGS at only 9 months of age. This was a lovely bit of good news for Patricia who had just come home after a spell in Hospital.
Eilish Neally has kindly sent me the results of the Irish Ladies KC Ch Show held at Cavan on20th July BOB and GSD was Dolly Kavanagh's Ch Denemore Forbidden Treasure. RGSD Beck's Allivom The Gay Crusader. GSB was Margaret Widera's Balamunch Sweet Memory with Dolly's Snowlord Swiss Miss For Serenglade taking the RGSB. Treasure went on to win the Toy Group.
I have just heard that Mavis Pratt has been in Hospital following another stroke. She is now home again and on the way to recovery. Mavis has been in a residential home and does miss her dogs but her health made it nercessary to move in to care accommodation. |
