Sandra Poulter had a good day at the City of Portsmouth Open Show with her home bred 9 month old bitch puppy Sanjuper Just My Girl winning the Toy Puppy Group. Her third show she has so far been unbeaten in Puppy Classes. Sandra needless to say is delighted especially as she has been out of the ring for a few years.

At Falkirk and District Canine Club where David Roe judged the breed, Alison and Caitlin Leiper took BOB with Graycaz Give it up for Thello who then went on to win the Toy Group under Carolyne Roe and ended up RBIS under David. His win at this show also gained him his Junior Warrant.

Also in Scotland Mrs. Jeanette MacKay's Jaylanjay Amastunner who is 11 months won the Toy Group and ended up BPIS. Already this young man has some 6 Group wins to his credit and 2 BPIS awards. Shortly after at the Turiff Canine Association Show Amastunner again took Best Toy and  BPIS and this time went on to BIS.

In Ireland at the Dun Laoghaire Canine Society Championship Show BOB & GSD to Margaret  Widera's Oldcourt Captain Kid at Balamunch and the  GSB to Mrs. H. Hoffins Balamunch Sweet Memory.

Two changes of address. Josie and John Mann have now moved to Boniee, 7 Patricks Close, North Kelsey, Market Rase, Lincs LN7 6LH telephone 01652 678874. Rhoda & Dave Straughan have moved to 3 Kendon Gardens, Thorne, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN8 5BZ Tel:01405 818032

Betty Flavell judging at Leeds made Caroline Lee-Farnsworth's Ch Graycaz Green Is Envy DCC and BOB, RDCC was Rosemary and David Ayris' new Ch Ibstock Marksman. BCC and her third making her up was David and Caroline Roe's Daneview Dainty Roxanne at Sunshoo, RBCC went to Mrs Thornton's Penang Small Talk to Shevid.B Puppy was Chris Pougher's Rayol Jasmena of Chriskadu.

The following day at N&E Open Show young Emma McLaughlin steered her family's Pinelan Amaryllis to BB and BIS under judge Liz Bartram, she also was Best JH 12-18yrs. BD was Rosemary and David's Ch Ibstock Marksman who had a great weekend! Best Puppy was Austin and Thompson's Jhanikia Monarch Of The Glen.  6-11yrs JH winner was Emma Peters. This was a new venue and I understand was well liked by the exhibitors.

A day after leaving quarantine in Australia at NSW and General Lynne Connel took her import Cheryldene Double Oh Seven to DCC BOB and last six in the Toy Group - not a bad beginning with 18 points towards his Ch status.

Brilliant Agility dog Harlie has been very busy lately and her winnings since the 1st June make awesome reading: 1st Senior Agility at SupaDogs Show, 1st Open Agility at Chippenham, 1st open Agility at Newlands and 1st Open Agility at Bretons where the temperature was about 90 degrees and there were 138 - Yes - 138 in the class.  She will be 8yrs old this month - what a dog!

Joyce Allison sends a reminder that the entries for S Wales Pearl(10th) Anniversary Show close on Thursday 8th August The early date is due to the fact that the special catalogue will contain 3gen pedigrees for every dog entered so the printer needs more time.  A video of the show will also be available and can be preordered on the Entry Form.  if you need a schedule apply to Joyce on 01242583752.

Eileen Roberts( Rescue and Welfare Co - ordinator) rang to say she had heard of a Cream and white, Papillon( could be L/W) being offered for sale by Gypsies in Cambridgeshire.  Do you know anyone who has lost one?  Contact Eileen on 0116 278 1976 if you know anything about it

Dog World I am delighted to be able to start these notes off with some good news, Hilary Ness (Chappell Papillons) will be getting married on September 21. Hilary is judging the breed at SKC on 25 August and I wonder which she will find the more nerve wracking??? Hilary's married name will be Mrs H Byers, not  to be confused with Mrs H Byers in Cavaliers who will be her mother in law!! I am told that there will be a traditional Scottish "Knees Up" following the wedding after which Hilary and her new husband Stephen will be honeymooning on safari in Kenya so Hilary will miss the Scottish Club Championship Show on 29 September. However father Jim will be there provided he has recovered from the celebrations!! I am sure we would all like to wish Hilary and her new husband all the best for their future.
At Bournemouth Bitch CC and BOB went to Carolyn and David Roe's Sunshoo Imastarlighter, by Ch Ringlands Treasure Island out of Sunshoo Imastarlett who went on to take Group 3. Dog CC went to Irene and Glen Robb's Ch Kingshaven Principal Boy at Gleniren. Reserves went to Jo Davidson Poston's Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons in dogs and Liz and Alan Bartram's Burghbridge Olympic Gold at Christea in bitches. Liz and Alan also took Best Puppy with Burghbridge Ur Classic Gold. Liz and Alan had quite a day at Bournemouth, as well as taking the Reserve CC and Best Puppy, their Burghbridge Papillons took all four puppy classes as well. Minor Puppy dog was Burghbridge UR Classic Gold (Best Puppy), Minor Puppy Bitch Burghbridge URA Golden Lady, Puppy Dog Burghbridge Royal Tribute (owned by Diane Merchant Giles) and Puppy Bitch with Burghbridge Temair (owned by Thesbina Teague & Sue Morrell). The Minor puppy dog and bitch were litter brother and sister as were the Puppy Dog and Bitch. I am not sure whether that has been done before, I certainly cannot remember it maybe someone else can????

At the Ulster Toy Dog Society Roy and Audrey Beck (Baladora) took BIS with their Alivom The Gay Cavaliero. Also in Ireland at the Kilisheen All breeds Open Show Pilipalas Debussy bred by Patricia and Peter Greiff took BOB, Best Toy and went to take BIS. Unfortunately Peter omitted to tell me the name of the new owner.

Our Newsletter Editor has asked me to mention an error in the Newsletter where under the Area Representatives the details for Arthur Houghton (Cheshire, Merseyside, Shropshire and Staffordshire were incorrect, the correct address and telephone number is 7, Severn Acre Road, Thornton, Merseyside, L23 9UH
Telephone: 0151 931 5424.

Some sad news just received to tell me that Ron Smith, along time member of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club) of the Tybryn Papillons passed away in hospital on 5th August 2002. Our  condolences go to his wife, family and friends. I am afraid I do not have any details yet of any arrangements.

Finally Sue Morrell has asked me to mention that the new Handbook currently underway will include a question time for papillon owners. All those questions you have wanted to ask but for various reasons have not managed to do so.....this is your opportunity. Sue says she is not proposing to answer these herself but these will be put to a number of folk who have been in the breed for a good time. So think up those questions that have been burning to be asked, and as long as they are all related to papillons/phalenes they will be included in the handbook and can also be a wealth of knowledge and learning for others. Please send all questions directly to Sue either by e-mail to temelorapaps@tinyworld.co.uk or by post or telephone to 8 Daws Mead, Bishops Hull, Taunton, TA1 5HQ tel 01823 277722

At Falkirk & Dist CC with David Roe judging Alison and Caitlin Lieper went BOB with Graycaz Give It Up For Thello, then won the Toy Group under Caroline Roe and finished up by being selected for RBIS by David!!  He also won the last point for his Junior Warrant.  This little dog has given his owners a wonderful year.  Another Scottish dog who has been doing very well is Jeanette MacKay's Jaylanjay Imastunner,  at only 11 months of age he already has 6 Best Toy Groups and 3 BPIS awards and is well on his way to his Junior Warrant.  At Highland CA he won Best Toy Group and BPIS and then at Turriff CA he again won Best Toy and BPIS.

At the Monkstown All Breed Ch Show held by Dun Laoghaire CS there were only 7 Papillons entered Both GSs went to Balamunch dogs.  BOB and GSD to Margaret Widera's Oldcourt Captain Kid at Balamunch and GSB was Mrs Hoffin's Balamunch Sweet Memory.  Captain Kid was shortlisted in the Toy Group

I was unable to be at the EELKS show at Newmarket - I still cannot drive and still have Bells Palsy.  Liz Bartram judging found her BOB in Anne Steven's Tawzan Bizzy Bee Bee and her B Puppy was Shirley Colyers Shirando Tractor Boy. Stuart and Viv Cotton kindly stewarded and looked after awarding the specials for me and I am very grateful to them  I do so miss being at the shows.

Inixia French Maid a little B/W Papillon has gone missing from her home on the edge of Dartmoor.  If you have any information or if a B/W pap has suddenly appeared in your district or been offered for sale in your local paper please contact Sue Stanbury on 01392369759 as it is possible she may have been taken.

Rhoda and Dave Straughan of the Azinghar Papillons have a new address, it is: 3 Kendon Gardens, Thorne, Doncaster, S Yorkshire DN8 5BZ  Tel:  01405 818032
August 2002
Dog World News has only recently reached me of the passing of David Prest and regrettably I was therefore unable to print details of this before. I have been asked by John Edson, Secretary of the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club, to print the following message from him. John writes "Claire has asked me to convey to her many friends in Papworld her gratitude for the many expressions of sympathy on the recent death of her beloved husband, David.(aged 54). Claire was secretary of the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon club last year and much of the computer work was done by David.

In July, David and Claire were on holiday in Wales in their RV when David suffered a heart attack and was admitted to hospital in Haverford West I believe. After a few days recovery in hospital he was driven to their home near Filey, North Yorkshire where he continued to be tested at both Scarbro' and Middlesbro' hospitals and where it was discovered that there were further complications in the form of cancer. Notwithstanding that, the prognosis was good and he remained at home.

He died at home in the early evening of Monday, 5th August. The funeral was held at Scarborough Crematorium this last Monday, 12th August with papillon people in attendance. David was universally liked by all who came in contact with him, not just his work colleagues, as evidenced by the attendance at the crematorium. He was one whose place both at work and in this life cannot be easily filled, but whose kindly influence and affection for his fellow man will avail as a shining example to us all. His love for their dogs was obvious - often to be seen at a show cuddling Ross or Robbie or one of the other dogs.

Claire is devastated by David's sudden and premature death and asked me to convey this message and her thanks for the many cards and floral tributes that she has received.

Should you wish to contact her, the address is ...."Prestella," 30, Gap Road, Hunmanby Gap, Filey, North Yorkshire, YO14 9QP.......or if you wish to e-mail her please do it via me (John's email is jaedson@onetel.net.uk) as a reply to this, as Claire is not picking up mails at this time. We all wish her peace and tranquillity at this time, and the strength to continue when all seems to have ended"

The Welsh Kennel Club Show turned out to be a day that Alan and Liz Bartram will never forget. The judge was Eileen Bates, over from S Africa, and she found her Bitch CC and BOB in Liz and Alan's Burghbridge Our Princess. This was Our Princess', or Emma as she is known, third CC thus giving her her title subject to KC confirmation. By Ch Corralyn Scottische out of Burghbridge Hilare she is I believe Liz and Alan's first Champion, she took her first CC at Southern Counties earlier this year and her second at East of England last month. Liz and Alan have been overwhelmed by the many congratulations they have received from folk and would like to express their gratitude to everyone for their good wishes. Dog CC went to Gill  Breen's Kylecroft Celebration, his second CC, by Ch Kingshaven Oh Mr Porter out of Kingshaven Play It Again at Kylecroft. Reserves went to Queenie Bruce and Amanda Bruce Jackson's Ch. Tijuana Minstrel in dogs and Sue McLaughlin and Emma Victor's Pinelan Amarylis in bitches. BP was  Jean and Roger Banfield's Gleniren Rock 'Em' Wild at Kingshaven.

Michelle walker and family have now moved, the new address is Mr & Mrs Walker,  Happypappy Papillons, 44 Trellewelyn Road, Rhyl, LL18 4ET Telephone: 01745 330616

I hope everyone is sorting out their photos for the new Handbook to come out next year. Don't forget closing date is  14 October, not that far away now. If you want any information regarding the Handbook speak to either Alan Bartam on 01189 815996 or Sue Morrell on 01823 277722

Eileen Bates judging at Builth WellsGave BCC and BOB to Alan and Liz Bartram's Burghbridge Our Princess, this was her third ticket thus making her a Champion and she is I think Liz and Alan's first homebred champion in the breed so Many Congratulations and I don't expect they have come down to earth yet!! RBCC went to Emma McLaughlin showing her and her parent's Pinelan Amaryllis.  DCC was Gil breen's Kylecroft Celebration and RDCC went to Queenie Bruce and daughter Amanda's Ch Tijuana Minstrel.  Best Puppy was Jean and Roger Banfield's Gleniren Rock 'em Wild at Kingshaven.  Eileen sent an e-mail from S Africa on their return telling me how much she enjoyed the show and how good it was to see old friends.

Claire Prest previous Secretary of the N&E Pap Club whose husband David passed away so suddenly on 5th August would like me to convey her grateful appreciation to her many Papillon friends who have quite overwhelmed her with cards, sympathy and flowers on this sad occasion.  It is when something so devastating happens that the true value of friends is revealed.  David was only 54. the funeral was held on 12th August at Scarborough Crematorium and was attended by many work colleagues and friends  from the Papillon world.  The comfort of her dogs will mean such a lot to Claire now and in the future.  If you wish to contact her her address is Prestella, 30 Gap Rd, Hunmanby Gap, Filey, N Yorkshire YO14 9QP.  Any e-mails should go via John Edson at jaedson@onetel.net.uk  as Claire is not picking up mail at this time

in case you have not noticed last week's Our Dogs carried a notice that from now on whenever possible they will include in their Show section, critiques on THIRD PLACED EXHIBITS at General Ch,  Breed Club Ch and Breed Club Open Shows.  Judges are invited with immediate effect to submit their comments on the first three placed exhibits. I am sure this will be welcomed by exhibitors
August 2002
Dog World At SKC the DOg CC and BOB went to Dolly Kavanagh's well known Ch Denemore Forbidden Treasure, handled of course by Sean who went on to sterr him to top the Toy Group. Bitch CC went to Ruth and Doug Johnston's Bonifee Sophisticated Lady and I am sure there was much celebrating in the Johnston household that evening as this was Sophisticated Lady's thrid CC thus giving her her title subject to KC confirmaiton Bred by Josie and John Mann (who I am sure also partook of some celebration) she is by Lindendale Lionheart of Bonifee out of Lordsrake Walkie Talkie and has a string on some 9 Reserve CC's to her credit so I am sure this third CC was more than welcome. Reserves went to Carolyne Lee Fanrsowrth's Ch Graycaz Green Is Envy in dogs and Woodrows Lynflyer Perfect Lady in bitches. BP was Jeanette Mackays Geanzeger Butterfly Meadow at Jaylanjay.

John Edson, Sevretary of the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club has asked me to mention that he has noticed that the Club's Championship SHow appears to have been wrongly shown on some web sites as  3rd November. Please be aware that the correct date/venue is 10th November 2002 at the Snaith & District Sports Association Hall (same as last year). Judges this year are Evelyn Needham - dogs and Carolyn Roe - biches. Closing date for entires will be 7 October

Our Dogs
Kathy Blayney judged at Bournemouth Ch Show and her BCC and BOB was David & Caroline Roe's Sunshoo Imastarlighter who went on to be Group 3, RBCC was the Bartram's Burghbridge Olympic Gold at Christea. DCC was Glenn & Irene Robb's Ch Kingshaven Principal Boy at Gleniren and RDCC was Jo Davidson-Poston's Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons.  B Puppy went to the Bartram's Burghbridge Ur Classic Gold.

At the Ulster Toy Dog Society's Show Roy and Audrey Beck's Alivom The Gay Cavalero went BIS.  Some news from Australia, at Brisbane Royal BOB was Connell's Ch Chrysway Regal Feagan and the Bitch winner was Hitchcock's Kyryndaley Dark Angel.  Sharon and Don Mahoney of the Mondelise Papillons are thrilled at their Ch Mondelise Silver Sails who has won her 2nd BIS All Breeds and also the final points which qualified her for the title of Grand Champion.  There are only a handful of Grand Champion Papillons in Australia so they are justifiably very proud of her success.  Silver Sails carries both Nouveau and Caswell blood and Sharon and Don thank the UK Kennels represented in her pedigree.

Sue Morrell writes that it is hoped to include a Question Time for Papillon Owners in the new Handbook. to be answered by experienced Breeders.  She asks that if you have any questions for this feature about Papillons/phalenes you send them to her by mail e-mail or telephone.  Sounds very interesting - I hope you will use the opportunity to find out those things you have always wondered about.

I am sad to have to tell you of two deaths Ron Smith of the Tybryn Papillons passed away in Hospital on 5th August and we send sincere condolences to his family and friends. The other great loss is Claire Prest's husband who died very suddenly only a few days before he was to go into Hospital for a heart operation, sadly, it was not to be He was only in his 50s.  Claire served for a few years as Secretary of the N&E Pap Club. I know you all sympathise with these losses.

Apparently the wrong address and Telephone No for the Area Rep for Cheshire, Merseyside, Shropshire and Staffs was incorrect in the Newsletter it should read Mr A Houghton, 7 Seven Acre Rd, Thornton, Merseyside L23 9UH Tel: 0151 931 5424
Another change of adress Mr and Mrs Walker are now at Happypappy Papillons, 14 Trellewelyn Rd, Rhyl, LL18 4ET Tel: 01745 330616

I was so pleased to have a visit from Eileen and Nev Bates who are over from S Africa this week as Eileen is judging at Builth Wells, we had lots of reminiscing and it was great to hear of their life in S Africa where they are very into Crown Green Bowling as well as being involved in both showing and committee work in the Dog Show world. I don't think they would like to return here permanently.  It was good to see them and they cheered me up so much as just the day before I had an emergency appointment with the eye consultant as I began to loose sight in my left eye and I have developed something called Ramsey-Hunt Syndrome as a result of the Shingles and Bells Palsy so I am now one eyed with a patch over the other - all I need is the Parrot on my shoulder!!

I hear that dear Hilary Ness is to be married on 21st of September in a huge church white wedding with all the trimmings, she is marrying Steven Byers whose mother is well known in Cavaliers so they have much in common I am sure many of you have met Steven. Hilary may remember that I almost finished him off by falling on him some years ago - but that's another story!! Aileen Goodwin to whom I am indebted for the news says that the father of the bride Jim Ness is holding up well under the strain and although Hilary and spouse will be on a Safari Honeymoon at the time of the Scottish Pap Ch he will doubtless be happy to meet friends over a drink after the judging. All my personal Love and Best Wishes to you Hilary for a wonderful future.

A reminder from the Secretary of N & E Cos Pap Club that the Ch Show is on 10th November at Snaith Sports Hall.  This is a week later than the date we have become used to over the years so make sure it is correct on your Calendar.
August 2002
