Queenie Bruce has asked me to mention that the 12 final photographs for the 2003 Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Calendar has now been selected and that all photographs have been returned where a stamped addressed envelope was provided. If you did not provide an envelope you can collect your photos at the Club's Championship Show on 10 November at Snaith. The calendar will of course be on sale at the show.
At Birmingham Dog CC and BOB went to Jimmy Simpson's Penang Bold Horatio, his third I believe his other two CC's coming at Manchester and Crufts this year, thus giving him his title subject to KC confirmation. He is by Penang Fable out of Penang Rosie O'Grady. Bitch CC, her second, went to Sue Stanbury's Inixia Jack's Jewel by Inixia Jack The Lad out of Jadedoren Let's Party to Inixia, Reserves went to Jenny Scovell's Caswell Classic Tri in dogs and Mrs E Wilson, Mr M & Mrs C & Boal's Serenglade Serendipity at Erinsjoy in bitches. Best Puppy was Norma Staff and Pat Munn's Ringlands Almandira Lunar Star.
Gettoing Best Puppy must have been some consolation for Norma and Pat who had a traumatic journey to the show, the car breaking down after they had left the motorway and were approaching the venue. Unfortunately Pat had left her breakdown details at home but was eventually able to phone home and get these and call out the breakdown people which of course meant having to wait. Norma says a lot of dog folk were kind enough to stop and ask if they could help or take them on to the show. Eventually the breakdown people came and was able to get them going although only in first gear and they eventually managed to limp into the car park and get to the ring just as Junior Dog was finishing. Luckily they had decided not to bring dogs just bitches so did not miss their classes. At the end of the show the breakdown people came back, collected them , the dogs and the car and took them home. Fortunately all ended well but a reminder to us all that we should keep our breakdown cover up to date, bad enough breaking down at all but doing it with dogs in the car would be awful

Melanie Mann has gone a little further her new address being 27 Route des Carrieres, 29690 Huelgoat, France. Mr & Mrs J Deacon are now at 8 Homefields, Longbridge, Deverill, Warminster, Wilts. Sweet Memory gained her championship title that day making her the second Irish papillon bitch to be made up this year
I was very sorry to hear from Liz Bartam that Burghbridge Royal Tribute had been tragically killed in an accident. He had of course been doing so well in Puppy Classes in recent months and was one of the four puppies bred by Liz and Alan that took all the four puppy classes at Bournemouth. Needless to say Liz and Alan along with Tribute's owner Diane Merchant-Giles are heartbroken.
A correction to the recent report on the Munster Circuit. At Clonmel and District CC Green Star Bitch and BOB went to Becks' Baldora Mark of Elegance not Balamunch Mark of Elegance as printed.
Finally don't forget to get those advertisements off for the Club Handbook, deadline for UK advertisers is 14 October. I understand already the copy is coming in very well keeping Alan and Sue extremely busy!!!! |

I am very sorry to have to report that I have just received a card from Evelyn Needham informing me that John had passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. Evelyn tells me that she is at the present moment, quite naturally, finding it very difficult to cope and that the dogs are being so quiet that it is rather eerie. However Evelyn says she will cope but would appreciate no telephone calls at the moment.
Those of us who knew John will know what a kind and gentle man he was, he obviously took great pride in Evelyn's dogs and their successes and was I am certain a source of great support to Evelyn. Many of us will also know that John himself was a keen breeder of ornamental pheasants and an extremely knowledgeable one at that and on quite a number of occasions he was able to give Mark and I a good deal of sensible and practical advise on such matters. Always a pleasure to talk to I can only describe him as a gentleman and he will be sadly missed by many of us for his quiet and thoughtful ways. Our thoughts and condolences go to Evelyn and family at this saddest of times.
When I receive such sad news and have to pass it on in the Breed Notes I always find it so difficult to then have to continue to report the day to day news regarding show results etc as these really are so unimportant in comparison, but I suppose it is carrying on with the normalities of life that help us all cope with such sadness. Nonetheless I am sorry if these notes do not carry the same enthusiasm I usually try to muster.
At the Junior Handling Semi Finals held at Richmond there were again a number of successes for our Junior Handlers. Most notably in the 12-16 years Class where first place in the Toy Group was won by Julia Gilchrist from Dorking handling Ringlands Acid Jazz and this qualifies her for the Finals to be held in Birmingham in January. Julia had I understand taken second place the last two years. In 4th place in this class was another of our successful Juniors, Emma McLaughlin from Claverton. In the 6-11 years class 2nd place was taken by Neil Leiper from Montrose. Congratulations to them all for another outstanding success for Papillon Juniors, I am told by Emma's mother, Sue Victor, that this is the third year in a row that the Breed has been represented in the Finals.
At Darlington Dog CC and BOB went to Mr & Mrs G Stone's Genevieves Flirtie Bertie, I believe a first CC for him and possibly for owners, although he has something like four Reserve CC's to his credit. He is by Invergarick Conquestador out of Genevieves Silk Bonnet. Bitch CC, which I think is her second, went to Carolyn and David Roe's Sunshoo Imastarlighter whose breeding I have recently given. Reserves went to Irene and Glen Robb's Ch Kingshaven Principal Boy at Gleniren in dogs and Miss I L Waters' Ch Vella Ennis in bitches. Best Puppy was Sue Thompson and Sandra and Jane Austin's Jhanakia Oliver's Story who was just 6 months and four days old on the day |

I have just received a sad letter from Evelyn Needham telling me of the sudden and unexpected death of her husband John. It is very hard for her to cope at the moment but she has a very supportive family which is a blessing. However she would appreciate no phone calls at the moment please. John was a lovely person and I always enjoyed meeting and chatting with him at the shows, since his retirement he attended most of them giving Evelyn great support and was always so pleased with her successes. He will be greatly missed by the family and they have our sympathy.
Alan Bendelow judged at Darlington Ch and his DCC and BOB was the Stone's Genevieves Flirtie Bertie, this was the first CC and I am sure the others will follow soon. RDCC was Glenn and Irene Robb's Ch Kingshaven Principal Boy at Gleniren. BCC went to Caroline and David Roe's Sunshoo Imastarlighter - I think her second and BRCC was Irene Waters Ch Vella Ennis. B Puppy was Thompson and Austin's Janakia Olivers Story and Best Veteran was Jean Leverett's Glasafon Mindella
My sight is still not back to normal so I still cannot drive and my face is still in the grip of Bells Palsy - it has been over three months now and I wonder when it is going to end. I have to cover my left eye for half the day and apply ointment as well. I do so miss the shows so please keep in touch with me and let me have all your news |

I was sorry to hear from Norma Staff that she had just lost Ringlands Heritage. Although lightly shown he did have a couple of Reserve CC's but it as a sire he proved so strong. Top Stud in 1996 he produced amongst others Ch Ringlands Copyright (himself the sire of Ch Ringlands Hologram) as well as Carolyn and David Roe's Ringlands Erik the Red at Sunshoo. Erik himself of course has proved an outstanding sire producing a number of champion offspring.
John Edson, Secretary of the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club, has asked me to include the following notice. It has been brought to the notice of their committee of the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club that the "Definition of Classes" as printed in the schedule for their forthcoming Ch. Show, on the 10th of November, has not been reproduced correctly. The K.C. have been notified and the K.C. have stated that their "Definition of Classes" as set out in F (A) 3.72 of the "Red Book" would apply and override in any case. A correct set of Definitions can be found in the schedule of any general Ch. Show or if any exhibitor has any queries he can phone the N & E secretary, John Edson, on 01757-268213. The closing date for entries is 7th October.
Mark and I were pleased to hear recently from Birgitta Westergren of the La Rocca's Papillons in Sweden that her Ch La Rocca's Soulmate owned by George Yakes went BIS at the International All Breeds Dog Show held last month in Sweden. Soulmate is a grand son of Nouveau Chevrolet.
Sharon and Don Mahoney of the Mondelise Papillons in Australia have been visiting for a week and it has been great fun to catch up on old times, it is some 7 years now since Sharon was last over. As well as taking the opportunity to do a little sight seeing they were naturally very keen to see as many papillons as they could and Jimmy and Dorothy Simpson, Carolyn and David Re and Anna McKnight have been kind enough to have them for a visit which I know they both greatly appreciated. Having visited one or two kennels last week in Ireland they are shortly off to S Africa where Don is judging and hope to see a few papillons whilst they are there as well.
Ruth and Ann Weston had a super day recently at the Eastbourne & DCS Open Show where their Powdermill Touch of Magic took BOB and went to win the Toy Group. Magic is from Ruth and Ann's second litter so a good start for them but they are of course already well known in the world of dogs as their Powdermill Corgis have had many successes in the past.
