At the Scottish Papillon Club Championship Show Bitch CC & BIS went to Mrs. S & Mr I Victor & Miss E. McLaughlin's Pinelan Amaryllis. Bred by Mrs Smith this I believe her second CC, she is by Pinelan Alpine Treasure out of Longcrags Aurelia of Pinelan. Dog CC and RBIS was Carolyne Lee Farnsworth's Ch. Graycaz Green Is Envy, reserves went to Mrs. A. Thornton's Shevid Lyric in dogs and Miss P. Taylor's Pamhurst Precious Gem in bitches.Lyric was also BPIS

At the Belfast Ch. Show  Dog CC and BOB went to Dolly Kavanagh's Ch Ir. Ch Denemore Forbidden Treasure
BOB Dog C.C Kavanagh's , Bitch CC to Dolly's Snowlord Swiss Maid for Serenglade. Reserves were Mary Whitehills Amicae Rudi Bare in dogs and Lees Brollyanna Crown Princess in bitches. BP was Deamer's Bankshill Isle of Lewis.

A delighted Jo Davidson Poston tells me that Zebedee (Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons) has now completed his Silver and Gold Kennel Club Good Citizens award, having passed his Bronze Award at Birmingham Ch Show. This three year old boy, bred by Rosemary Ayris, has proven he has beauty as well as brains as amongst his many show awards he has a CC with BOB, a Reserve CC and a number of BIS and RBIS awards at Open Shows. He has also done basic gundog training test and passed at the Southern Spinone club day last year, where he was in an honorary capacity to take part in the agility

Belfast ch Show was held on 28th and the Scottish Papillon Club Ch Show on 29th of September.  The latter had originally been scheduled for 22nd and of course this change had a most unfortunate effect on Belfast's entry as it was a question of crossing the Irish Sea and travelling across Scotland to the East side within two days - a daunting prospect and few exhibitors would have relished it. Sadly as Scottish exhibitors usaully make up the bulk of Belfast's entry there was a low entry for Jimmy Simpson to run the rule over.  He found his DCC and DCC in Dolly Kavanagh's UK&Ir Ch Denemore Forbidden Treasure who went on to be Group 3, I think.  RDCC was Mary Whitehill's Amicae Rudi Bare,  BCC was Dolly's Snowlord Swiss Maid For Serenglade, RBCC was Lee's Brollyanna Crown Princess.  B Puppy was Dreamer's Bankshill Isle of Lewis.

The following day at the Scottish Ch judged by Angela Skelton BIS and BCC was Emma McLaughlin and her parents Pinelan Amaryllis with RBCC going to Miss Taylors Pamhurst Precious Gem DCC and RBIS was Caroline Lee-Farnsworth's Ch Graycaz Green Is Envy, RDCC and BPIS was Mrs Thornton's Shevid Lyric.  I hope that the shows do not present such a dilemma to Scottish exhibitors in the future - Belfast's change of date was known for over a year and I have publicised it in these notes as soon as it was known

Can Ch Brentville The Entertainer can now add USA Ch to his name having won a 5pt Major on only his second trip to the States. He is owned by Kim McKay of the Arkeno Papillons and is by Storyteller and bred by Brenda Taylor.  Jo Davidson-Poston is very proud of her Ibstock Bright Spark For Spinillons who has Completed his Silver and Gold Good Citizen's Award

At the S Wales Papillon Club Championship Show Dog CC and BIS went to Rosemary and David Ayris' home bred Ch Ibstock Marksman ( Ch Ibstock Mark of Distinction ex Tussalud Miss Terrie Belle) Bitch CC and RBIS was  Hazel Barr's home bred Barallan Jump For Joy (Northlyte Galileo at Barallan ex Adnamshan Tibbar at Barallan). Reserves went to Mrs Thornton's Penang Tycoon at Shevid ( Tijuana Celebration ex Penang Pandemonium) bred by Mr  Simpson in dogs and in bitches to Carolyne Mrs Allward-Chebsey's home bred  Lorah's Livin' On The Run (Ch Diquest Fairy Glen ex Alphastar One Vision of Lorah's). BPIS was Liz and Alan Bartram's home bred Burghbridge Ur Classic Gold (Burghbridge Fly For Gold ex Ch Daneview Dainty Bella Bella)

Pat Munn recently judged at the Switzerland Papillon and Phalène Club Championship Show and found her BIS in Jan Roosen's World Ch. Kingshaven Quicksilver de Costalina bred of course by Jean and Roger Banfield.

At the Scottish Toydog Open Show BOB went to Jeanette Mackay's JayLanJay Amastunner  who the following day travelled to Fort William for the Lochaber Open Show where he again took BOB, and with it Best Toy and RBIS. Amastunner's young half sister, Geanzger Meadow Butterfly at JayLanJay, both being by Geanzger Avon Prince at JayLanJay , has made a very promising start to her show career. Following her BPIB at SKC and Best Bitch Puppy at the Papillon Club of Scotland Championship Show, she took Best Toy Puppy and BPIS at the Scottish Toydog Open Show and at Lochaber was again Best Toy Puppy. Avon Prince is proving himself a worthy sire as two more of his offspring have made good starts to their show careers. Aileen Goodwin's Imago Funtime Frankie  won 1st Puppy Dog at S K C and at the Papillon Club of Scotland Champ Show his litter brother, Imago Festoon, won 1st Minor Puppy Dog  and was Best Minor Puppy in Show. Festoon is owned by Rebecca Wilson  a newcomer to the breed who I am sure must be thrilled to get such success so early.
Recently on the Papnet on the web the subject of early spaying was raised, in this particular case a young bitch of 6 months was apparently recommended to be spayed because she was rather vocal and it was suggested that spaying her would 'calm her down'. It made me wonder what folk think about spaying so early, and in particular for such a purpose. I believe it is quite common practise in the USA to spay at an early age, generally intact bitches are not sold it would seem as pets and if they are only under agreement to have them spayed relatively early. There is I believe some medical evidence to suggest that spaying before the first season drastically reduces the chances of mammary tumours later in life. It would be interesting to know what experienced breeders feel, my own view is that I could not put a young bitch of such a tender age through this, looking back at some of the bitches I have had at six months they seem to me far too immature to consider this. My own experience years ago with cats was that those that were spayed early did not seem to mature as quickly or often as well as those who were allowed to mature before spaying, the lack of maturity often noticed in both body and mind and having mentioned this on Papnet I was interested to get a number of responses, including one from France, agreeing with that point of view. I do of course realise that mammary tumours later in life are something which are perhaps more common than they used to be and some may well feel that such preventative action is sensible. It would be interesting to learn the views of others on this.

Jean Lawrence tells me that a papillon was recently abandoned at a vet's in Central Oxford, he is about 5/6 years old, red and white and Jean thinks she has been able to find him a good home. Nothing else is known about him and maybe someone will remember possibly selling a red and white of this age at some time in the last 5 years or so to that area and maybe can help, perhaps a long shot but let's hope something turns up. The main thing is that hopefully he has been successfully re homed. I suppose the fact that he was abandoned at a vet's shows that his previous owners had some concerns over his welfare, perhaps they were unaware that the Club would help out if circumstances were difficult. Something we should perhaps impress upon everyone to whom we sell a puppy , sometimes people are I suppose a little embarrassed in having to get back to the original breeder, or may not realise that most reputable breeders will always help out in times of difficulty -  or should do. If we impress upon them that they can always approach the Club to assist with re homing some may find that preferable, as long as the papillon is looked after that's the most important thing

Philip Shirley in his capacity as Cup Steward for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club has asked me to remind all winners of trophies at last years winter (Nov) Open show that the trophies are due to be returned for this years show on 30th November. As Phil is going to be away for several weeks,  please do not return trophies to his address but take them back to the show or give them to someone who will be going who will be able to return them for you. The Open Show in November is of course again going to be held in conjunction with the Birmingham Toydog Open Show at the usual venue so exhibitors have the opportunity to compete in two shows on the same day. The schedules for the Club Open Show should be with exhibitors by the time these notes are out but if you have not had one please contact either David Abbot on 01453 890322 or Carolyne Allward Chebsey on 01543 256394

At Driffield Dog CC and BOB went to Caroline Lee Farnsworth's Ch Graycaz Green Is Envy with the Bitch CC going to Irene Water's Ch Vella Ennis. Reserves went to Glen and Irene Robb's Ch Kingshaven Principal Boy at Gleniren in dogs and Carolyne and David Roe's Sunshoo Imastar Lighter in bitches. Details of the breeding for all four have been given in recent notes. BP was Mrs Thornton's Shevid Lyric who has been having such a good run lately, he is I understand from Mrs Thornton's very first litter so a very promising start for both.

You may have all read in an earlier edition of Dog World that Midland Counties and Dog World recently ran a competition to find the best newsletter and magazine produced by Breed Clubs. The aim of the competition was to promote, help and encourage those unsung heroes of the breed clubs, who produce an attractive, interesting and informative publication for their members, usually with little reward or recognition outside the confines of the club. It will come as little surprise to members of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club to discover that our own Newsletter was entered and received second prize. Over the years the Newsletter has developed into a very impressive publication and much of the credit of course goes to all those who have held the position of Newsletter Editor over the years. Each edition seems to surpass the previous one and these days we have a very full, informative and enjoyable publication appear as if by magic, which of course it is not it due to a great deal of hard work and time given to it. Our current Newsletter Editor, the competition having I believe been judged on two of the issues put out under her Editorship (is that a word???), does a wonderful job on this and of course also undertakes the very onerous duties of Acting Secretary.  I know how much Carolyne enjoys doing both these tasks, she always does them cheerfully, without complaint and with great enthusiasm and I am sure we all extremely grateful to her for all her efforts. I know also that many 'pet' members of the club for whom the Newsletter is the main if not the only link really with the Club get great enjoyment from the Newsletter. It is nice to be able to see what the competition criteria quite rightly describe as  "unsung heroes" getting some recognition. Of course Carolyne is not alone in being an " unsung hero" there are many on our Committee who undertake time consuming and sometimes difficult tasks often without recognition and hopefully we will all bear in mind that this praise extends to them also.

This news leads me nicely into my final notes this week. Carolyne has asked me to mention that if anyone has any  items that they wish to go into the next issue of the Newsletter, please send the copy to Carolyne before 30th October. Carolyne also mentions that anyone who wishes to take out adverts, Christmas Greetings etc. are more than welcome, the cost of a full page is £10.00 or £5.00 half page. Please send copy and payment by cheque, made payable to the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club, to Carolyne by post to 44 Gilbert Road, Lichfield, Staffs. WS13 6AX or you can email her at  Carolyne@lorahspaps.co.uk.

Dog World No Notes
Our Dogs
The last week has been a nightmare as we lost all our electricity at 8.30  on Sunday morning and it was not restored until 9 .10 on Wednesday evening.  It is really incredible how important it is to have adequate light and heating facilities especially when one lives in a fairly remote property with no near neighbours.  It is very true to say that one doesn't value something until one no longer has it.  We thought that we would still be dark until the weekend and almost embraced the engineers who came to throw the fuse back on the box in the field across the road.  All the rest of the village had theirs back days before but we three remote properties were forgotten and it was near to imporrible to contact anyone at the Company - It only needed one man and a ladder and took all of three minutes!!
I have had no news until this evening so here goes.  At Midland Cos Anne Sumerfield selected the Blythin's Aslan Emblem of Julesville as DCC and BOB with RDCC going to Jenny Scovell's Caswell Classic Tri.  BCC was Morrell & Teagues Serenglade Saffriesa for Temelora, RBCCwas Osborne's Tykkdewas Honeysuckle Rose .  B Puppy was Carolyne Allward-Chebsey's Lorah's Sharp Shooter.

at All Ireland Bulls Breed Ch Show BOB and GSD was the Phalene son of Maxine Moth Caroline Woods-Cox's Sunshoo Im A Hollywood Hero at Carasweet. RGSD went to Dolly Kavanagh's Denemore Treasure Icon and Dolly also took the BGS   with Snowlord Swiss Maid for Serenglade who, subject to IKC approval  became an Irish Champion on the day.  RGSB was Eilish Neally's Carrigteen Apatura Iris.

A note from Helen Verity who has Macstrak Minuet, he now can add JW after his name. He has qualified to compete in the finals of the Kennel Gazette J W Winner of The Year to be held on 16 November at Earls Court as part of Discover Dogs.  He is still only 21 months and has just won RBIS at Preston & Dist Open Show winning a Rosette bigger than himself
