Helen Verity writes about he recent successes of her Macstrak Minuet who having recently gained his Junior Warrant has qualified to compete in the finals of the Kennel Gazette Junior Warrant Winner of the Year to be held at Earls Court on 16 November, being part of the Discover Dogs Day. Minuet's most recent win was to take RBIS at Preston & District Open Show.
Phil Shirley has kindly sent me the latest list of Judges to be announced. For 2003 Bath - Mrs R Brady, Southern Counties - Mrs J Banfield, Border Union -Mr M Fowler, Blackpool - Mrs D Simpson, Leeds - Mr D Roe, Darlington - Mrs B Taylor and for 2004 Three Counties - Mr R Terry.
Sue Victor tells me that two of the Breed's Junior Handlers are off to the Eurodog Show in Belgium to be held on 15/16 November flying the flag for UK Papillons where they are entered with their dogs both in Junior Handling and in the Breed Classes. Let's hope they are successful. The two youngsters are Emma McLaughlin with King Quixotic and Sophie Langdon with Christi Crackling Crumpet.
I understand from the Handbook Editor Alan Bertram that the response has been really outstanding, some 121 colour pages and 93 B/W pages of kennel advertisements, including quite a number from Overseas. All in all Alan tells me the Book should be some 290 or so pages, so a good number of interesting articles will be included. A List of the Membership will not be included in the Book, a separate list is being sent to each member as was done last year.
The Championship Show next year, which of course is the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's 80th Anniversary has already attracted a considerable number of sponsors offering Special Trophies to be won outright, again many from overseas Kennels and I understand a good number of overseas folk are hoping to visit and maybe even exhibit. David Abbot has taken on the mantle of Acting Show Manager and obviously is coordinating everything. I am sure he would welcome offers of sponsorship from any UK Member who may wish to donate a special trophy or perhaps sponsor rosettes for one or more classes. Hopefully everyone will want to contribute to making the show an outstanding event, especially as we will have overseas visitors with us and it gives us the opportunity to put on a real display and make us proud of our own Breed Club. |

I hope none of your dogs suffered during the recent fireworks season. We are fortunately quite remote from the worst spots and although we hear them go off none are near us and we can enjoy the coloured rockets safely above the trees. I do think that the way forward is for organised displays by local authorities - all else being banned, That way at least people would be able to ensure their pets were in safety before the festivities begin I have no solution to the problem of the noise however. What do you think?
Emma McLaughlin and her friend Sophie Laughton are embarking on a great adventure. They and their dogs are off by Coach unaccompanied by Mums or Dads to take part in the Eurodog Show in Belgium to be held 16-17 th November. Both dogs have their Pet Passports, food and water as their baggage and the girls will of course have to care for them and their presentaion without any help. They will be taking part in both Breed Classes and Junior Handling and I think I am safe in saying that they are the first of our Juniors to take their dogs to show in Europe! What an intrepid pair and good for their parents for being so brave to let them go. I look forward to hearing all about it when they get back. |

I was sorry to hear from the USA that Frank Urban (Cedarwind Papillons) had died suddenly of a heart attack on 9 November. Frank, who with his wife Sue was a member of our Club, will be remembered by many here as of course he judged the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's 75th Anniversary Show just 4 years ago in November 1998. The Funeral will take place on 14 November. Our condolences go to Sue.
At the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Championship Show Dog CC and BIS went to Mr & Mrs Stone's home bred Genevieve's Flirtie Bertie. By Invergarick Conquestador out of Genevieve's Silk Bonnet this was his second CC. Bitch CC and RBIS went to Caroline Lee-Farnsworth's Ch Graycaz Blissful Thinking (Ch Caswell Copper Tiger out of Lindendale Lisa at Graycaz). Reserves went to Rosemary and David Ayris' Martika Luke Skywalker (Ch Tussalud Nickelodeon out of Martika Love Story) bred by Mark Whitehill in dogs and Liz and Alan Bartram's home bred Ch Burghbridge Our Princess (Ch Corralyn Schottische out of Burghbridge Hilaire) in bitches. Best Puppy was Philip Shirley's home bred Cordonrouge Ciara (Glasafon Welsh Gold at Cordonrouge out of Cordonrouge Classic Minx).
A correction to earlier notes regarding Midland Counties, Reserve Dog CC was in fact Jenny Scovell's Caswell Take A Chance and not as earlier reported.
The latest list of Judges announced are as follows:- for 2003 Bath - Mrs R Brady, Southern Counties - Mrs J Banfield, Border Union - Mr M Fowler, Blackpool - Mrs D Simpson, Leeds - Mr D Roe, Darlington - Mrs B Taylor; for 2004 Three Counties - Mr R Terry.
Some interesting news to come my way was to hear that a Phalene had taken the Toy Group at a large Championship Show held in Hanover, being Lupus Gaars Zeb bred by Mona Jonsson and it is pleasing to see a phalene taking such an award. I was lucky enough to be sent a photograph of him and he looks a very striking and attractive red and white dog with a very sweet head and super ears and fringing.
My thanks to Cheryl Locket for passing on details of the results of the Darwin Show in Australia where Ysway Regal Fagen bred and owned by Lynne Connell from Alice Springs had an outstanding day. He took the Dog CC, BOB, Toy Group, Best Australian Bred in Show and RBIS. His half brother Larvik the Xplorer took Best Baby Puppy in Breed (under 6 months) and also took Best Baby Puppy in Group. Both are sired by Aus Ch Mondelise Sans Pareil who himself has had an outstanding show career. Sans Pareil is by Ch Caswell Principality out of Nouveau Maid Marion who was imported in whelp by Sharon Mahoney.
A delighted Pam Luckhurst telephoned to let me have the results of the East of Scotland Canine Club Open Show where BOB went to nine and a half months old Pamhurst Laura's Gift. Bred by Pam, he is owned by young Laura McGregor and was actually a gift from Pam to Laura (hence the name). Pam says that Laura has been a great help to her and in fact it was Laura herself who handled Pam's Pamhurst Precious Gem to her CC at SKC last year so when Pam repeated the mating which produced Precious Gem she promised Laura pick of litter. Laura needless to say was delighted with the win, even managing to beat his older sister in the process for BOB.

At the Northern & Eastern Cos Ch Show at the weekend there were 207 dogs for Evelyn Needham (Dogs) and Caroline Roe (bitches) to run the rule over. BIS and DCC was the Stone's Genevieves Flirtie Bertie with RDCC going to David and Rosemary Ayris' Martika Luke Skywalker. BCC and RBIS was Caroline Lee-Farnsworth's Ch Graycaz Blissful Thinking with RBC going to Alan and Liz Bartram's Ch Burghbridge Our Princess. BPIS was Philip Shirley's Cordonrouge Ciara. Emma Peters won the 6-11yrs JH and Emma McLaughlin won the 12-16yrs.
I was sad not to be able to be there but was thrilled to receive a card signed by what seemed to be everyone at the show! It was so good to know that people were thinking of me and I hope that next year I will be able to attend. My face is at last beginning to untwist although my eyesight is still not back to normal but there is great improvement which is encouraging.
The BOB at the Eurodog Show was Kingshaven Quick Silver de Costalina owned by Mr&Mrs Roosens-Cognau and bred by Jean and Roger Banfield Congratulations, that must be a big thrill for Jean and Roger
The New Handbook will be something to look forward to, I understand that there are about 121 Colour pages and 93 B/W. I know that I am looking forward to seeing it.
I end on a rather sad note, Roger Banfield has let me know that Frank Urban of Cedarwind Papillons in USA passed away suddenly last Saturday. You may remember that he came over to judge the Papillon Club Open Show in 1988 where he made Doreen Cook's Bluezone Teddy Bears Picnic BIS. |

One result I omitted from the report of the South Wales Papillon Club Championship Show was the Best Veteran which went to Linda Greenslade's phalene Serenglade Symphony aged 15 and a half years old. The judge, Bubbles Wood Davis was apparently delighted to see Symphony (or Zoe as she is known) looking so well as Bubbles had given Zoe the Reserve CC at Paignton in 1991 and if my memory serves me correctly that was the first such award in the UK for a phalene (at least for very many years) Zoe of course went on to win more Reserve CC's including Crufts in 1992.
Jo Davidson Posten continues to do well with Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons picking up another BIS this time at the Huntingdon C S Open Show. This win gives Zebedee as he is known entry into the East Anglian Super Match later in the year. A good day altogether for Jo as Zebedee's daughter, Spinillons a Touch of Hope was BPIB.
It is one of the wonders of modern technology (although some of us sometimes also find it one of it's curses) that one is able to contact anyone anywhere in the world at any time through the internet. I was however, even knowing this, somewhat surprised to get an e-mail from Phil Shirley sent apparently from on board the QE2 in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Apparently he and Rod are on their way to S Africa enjoying a cruise (and getting away from our horrible cold and wet weather) I am sure most of us would prefer to be here anyway!!!!!
His purpose in writing was to say how delighted he was to hear of the success of his puppy, Cordonrouge Ciara who recently went BPIS at the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Championship Show at her first show and at the tender age of 6 months and 5 days. He was sorry not to have been there, it must be a real hardship to be enjoying a life of luxury!!!!
I wrote recently about the success of Laura McGregor's young puppy Pamhurst Laura's Gift and I hear that he has notched up another good win taking BPIB at the Scottish Toydog Society. This Open Show attracted an entry I understand of 78 Papillons and on the day only 5 were absent. BOB went to Mary Whitehill's Amicae Rudi Bare who went on to take BIS at this prestigious Show north of the border.I am told that Rudi was handled by young Neil Leiper who handling his own dog also took Best Junior Handler in Show.
As some of you may know by now Kevin Allison who has looked after the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club web site since it was launched has now had to give this up as he simply does not have the time available. So I will now be dealing with this and I have made a start on catching up some of the outstanding items. Most of this is done with a few minor adjustments still to be made, however what is still a little out of date is the Hall of Champions. As anyone who has visited the site will know it includes a list of champions made up since March 1996 and visitors to this site can view a picture of these. However there is a gap since July 2000 and I would be happy to update this with pictures of any champion made up since that date, all you need to do us send a picture to me (or e-mail it) together with a note of the date the title was gained and I will return it to you within a day or so. Obviously without being provided with a picture I cannot include this on the web site so it is really up to those concerned to let me have a picture. I have requested one or two of these by e-mail and sadly have not had even a response so whether folk simply are not interested I do not know, but I am afraid I simply do not have the time to keep chasing folk. So if you don't let me have a picture then I am afraid your dog won't be on the web site.

Next year will be the 80th Anniversary of the Papillon Club and it will be marked in various ways. There will be a New Handbook as you know but in addition it is intended that there will be a special Anniversary Championship Show on 6th April. The Club has received a good response from Overseas Breeders and Papillon Clubs, offers of special trophies. donations and special Rosettes. Each exhibitor should receive a specially embroidered towel as a lasting memento. If anyone wishes to contribute to making the show a great success please contact either Chairman Mike Foster or Acting Show Manager David Abbott.
The November Open Show is very near and Chris Pougher would be grateful for any donations to the Raffle - big or small. The Papillon Welfare Stall will also be present at this show and contributions of bric a brac, cakes etc will be welcomed
Mary Whitehill and Elizabeth Cochrane would like everyone to know that instead of sending Christmas Cards this year they intend to send a donation to a Children's Cancer Charity. They will have a Card at the Scottish Papillon Club Show and at LKA which will be sent to the Charity and anyone who wishes to make a donation instead of a card is welcome to sign it.
Amy Holmes went to the Eurodog show and having borrowed Ch Kingshaven Quicksilver de Costalina from Mr and Mrs Roosens-Cognau was placed 5th in the 18yrs to 40 yrs Section of the Senior Handling. What a win in what must have been a very challenging Competition!
Jo Davidson-Postons and Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons went BIS at Huntingdon Cs Open Show making Zebedee eligible for the East Anglian Super Match His daughter Spinillons A Touch of Hope also won BPIB so it was a very happy day.
Patricia Coughlan who owns Farfalla Dynasty for PauPad writes to tell me that she has recently gained her Silver Good Citizen award together with Pat Squires and her papillon Midnight Silver Sailor who is also a member of her Obedience Club. Both of them hope to take the Gold in the not too distant future - Well Done!
Mike Foster would like to hear from anyone who has made up a champion since June 2000. Having taken over as Webmaster on the Club's Web Site he is gradually updating it and if you wish your new Champion to appear in the Hall of Champions please send him a suitable picture and confirmation of the date it obtained its title. If you are not sure if it is already on the site take a look, you will find a visit very interesting. |

Having recently sent off to the Kennel Club for some registrations etc I must admit I was rather surprised at the wealth of literature which accompanied the registrations. Included with the stuff I sent off was a change of ownership form along with a change of name for the addition of an affix. I was surprised that even though both were sent together each was returned desperately and each accompanied by more information regarding Insurance, etc. Not only a waste of postage but the duplication of the information seemed unnecessary, no wonder the rain forests are disappearing.
What did amuse me was that when we applied for the addition of the affix we specifically requested no extra words such as 'at' or 'with' etc as the name was specifically chosen for our prefix to be added without such additions. Needless to say back came the change of registration form with 'at' added. Speaking to the KC they first told me we had to have such an addition, until I pointed out that the KC's own form merely stated such extra words were 'permitted' not required. I was then passed on to someone else who told me that the Registration Department were only advised in the last two months that such additions were not essential. When I asked the young man I spoke to if that was the case why was I able to look at a Show Catalogue for a show at the beginning of the year and find a number of examples of dogs in various breeds, some entered on Open Class so presumably a year or so old, where affixes had indeed been added without such additional wording, he was unable to advise me!! I don't mind the mistake, however silly, but find it hard to understand why a simple admission of error could not be made instead of trying to bamboozle me into thinking they were correct.
I am sure most of us have now had our copies of the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club's 2003 Calendar. Yet again they have managed to find some really charming papillon pictures, and over the years they have become very popular, almost a collectors item as I know I keep all my old ones. As usual I expect they will go like hot cakes so if you have not had yours yet I would recommend you act quickly before they all go. I beleive Queenie Bruce will be at LKA so I am sure if anyone wants one she would be happy to deliver it there. |

I'm afraid that I have very little news for you this week which has been a sad one at the Wilderness. We have had to say goodbye to our little Snow Prince whose health has been deteriorating for the last few months and we had to decide to put him out of his pain. My daughter was visiting and helped to take him to the Vet so we had support in what is always a difficult time and I cannot regret it because he had so little quality of life. He was a sweet natured little fellow who never gave me a moments anxiety and his passing has made me very sad.
I mentioned the Papillon Club Web site last week and have had a request for the web address. It is www.papillonclub.co.uk and as I said in my last notes a visit is well worth while, it is very informative and has many lovely Papillon photos on it together with up to date information on all sorts of topics. |
