Dog World	I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas. Ours was eventful to say the least, Mark's mother was staying with us for the Christmas period and managed to stumble and fall the end result of which was a gash to the head, a lovely black eye and worst of all a broken wrist. Spending 90 minutes on Christmas Eve afternoon in the local Casualty Unit and four and a half hours on Christmas Morning so that the doctors could reset the break was perhaps not the best way to spend the holidays. I must say however the staff at the hospital were absolutely brilliant. Despite her age and being rather frail these days Mark's mother took it all in her stride and even managed to joke about it not being the Christmas Break she had expected to enjoy but of course the shock took its toll and together with the local anaesthetic she received meant she spent most of Christmas day asleep in bed. Fortunately my sister and brother in law were staying as well so Christmas dinner was cooked while we were at the hospital and Mark's mother had four of us running around after her. It was rather sobering whilst waiting at the hospital on Christmas day to see all the visitors coming in, a number of which were clearly coming in to spend time with children judging by the Santa balloons and Christmas presents they carried. The nurses and doctors as well as the visitors were making great efforts to make the day a happy one, such people deserve all our thanks. Elizabeth Cochrane telephoned to let me know that following the decision she and Mary Whitehill had made not to send Christmas cards this year but to donate the money to the local Children's Hospice they had managed to collect the sum of £113.60. To achieve this wonderful amount Mary and Elizabeth also collected donations from folk between the Scottish Club Show and LKA and Elizabeth says many folk were very generous. A wonderful idea and a very creditable sum achieved, and perhaps rather fitting at this time of year that the children should benefit. Nice to hear from Isobel Urquhart who has been having such a bad time lately with problems with her eyes which have been causing her such a lot of pain. However I was delighted to hear that she had been to see a new doctor and that he had been of great help, in fact things are so much improved that for the first time for ages Isobel is without pain and is feeling very positive. As I say she had not been having an easy time of it, especially with losing a number of her older dogs over the last few months including the well known Ch Blackpark Camio, and many of us will remember with fondness this lovely and very successful black and white bitch. They also lost Blackpark Emit, this was a red and white dog who they had exported to the USA many years ago and had been extremely successfully campaigned out there and whom Cathy and Gordon had brought back to the UK some years ago in order that he could spend his retirement peacefully with them. A delighted Jo Davidson Poston lets me know that Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons had taken another BIS this time at the Wealdstone and Northolt CS Open Show under Kari Wilberg. Zebedee, as he is known, was of course bred by Rosemary Ayris and this is his 3rd BIS this year.
Our Dogs	Congratulations to Jo Davidson-Poston and Zebedee( Ibstock Bright Spark For Spinillons) who has won BIS at Wealdstone and Northolt CS under judge Kari Wilberg. This is the third time he has won a BIS so far. I have information that there are two women from Florida looking for Papillons. They have been unable to obtain them in the States as one is unstable and the other operates a Puppy Mill consequently they are trying to import from abroad. If you wish to check with me by telephone I can give you their names and they are working together. News from Elizabeth Cochrane who, together with Mary Whitehill decided to donate what they would normally spend on Christmas Cards to a Children's Hospice and asked anyone who would like to join them to sign a card and donate at the Scottish Papillon Club Open Show and at LKA. The sum collected was £113.60 and the money and card was delivered to the Hospice before Christmas. This was a great idea and Mary and Elizabeth wish to thank all who contributed. I am writing this on New Years Eve and I hope 2003 will bring Happiness and Good Health to you all I know everyone will be sorry to hear that Papillon Club President Norma Staff has suffered a mild stroke and is at present at home recuperating. Naturally Pat has a great deal to cope with so please send a card or a letter and avoid phoning. We all wish her a speedy recovery - nothing keeps Norma down for long!! She will soon be up and about I am sure. Papillons seem to be making their way on to our Television screens more often these days, doubtless due to their high trainability and intelligence. The latest saw a little B/W negotiating an A frame in 'Heartbeat' together with a back view of a little troupe being led away in the background. My husband also tells me that there was an unmistakeable Papillon in a recent episode of 'The Sopranos'. I am now completely disoriented with the deadlines so I don't know when these notes will appear!

Dog World	I am afraid that with the Christmas break I have got slightly out of timing for the notes, so there may be a week where there is nothing appearing!!! During 2002 30 sets of CC's were on offer for the breed. 13 Dogs shared these, and 20 dogs shared the Reserve CC's. Of the BOB awards 21 went to dogs the remaining 9 to bitches. Jake suffered horrendous injuries having had over 200 stitches over his body and at one time there was I believe a fear that even if recovered he would lose a leg. The latest news I have of him is that he is stable. I don't know whether Denise or anyone else was able to et the details of the owner and in the shock and concern simply to get the dog to medical attention perhaps not something always to the forefront on our minds. But I do hope the owner is found and prosecuted, no doubt the staffie will suffer worse and understandably no one wants to have a vicious dog loose, but the major responsibility surely is on the part of the owner clearly to stupid or uncaring to ensure his dog was under control. It was bad enough it was another poor animal, next time it could be a child and such irresponsibility should not go unpunished. We all hope the little dog recovers but it will clearly be a long job.
Our Dogs	I may be late with the notes as I went to the eye clinic yesterday and quite forgot that I would not be able to see well enough to do the notes when I got home owing to the drops which I had had in my eyes!! An e-mail from Denise Welch tells of little Jake who was attacked when being walked in Crawley by a loose Staffie. Dreadful damage was inflicted and he is now bravely recovering at home but has 200 stitches running from his chest and over his shoulder but at least his leg has been saved. Val McGivern has been to see him and says he is holding his own. it makes one realise how vulnerable our little dogs are when they are irresponsible people with large vicious dogs out of control. I know all will wish Jake a full recovery. I have a request from a lady for a small dog to be a companion to an 8 yr old Yorkie bitch whose sister and lifetime companion has just died suddenly, the little dog is pining. Dog World	Dianne Merchant Giles is not too well, she is currently in Bristol Hospital where she recently underwent an operation on her neck and spine. Although the operation seemed to go well I understand that within a couple of days she had to be taken back to the operating room because of fluid building up on her lungs which had caused a collapse of the lung. Pearl Peacock tells me that at one time they were quite concerned but hopefully she has now turned the corner. I am sure Pearl will have up to date information by the time these notes are out. We all hope Dianne makes a speedy recovery and that the operation will have taken care of all the problems she has had lately. Twp nice wins to start the year of for Papillons. At the SWECA Open Show Karen and Steve Maskell had a super day with their 9 month old tri bitch Kaskell Jadedoran Dream taking Best AVNSC Topy Puppy, the Toy Puppy Group end ending up RBPIS. At the recent 5 way Match between the Papillons and four other Toy Breeds they also took BPIM with her. At the other end of the country, Teresa Collins celebrated the New Year with her Graycaz Lick Anda Prayer for Collness by taking BPIB, BOB. Puppy Toy Group 1, Toy Group 1 and BPIS Queenie Bruce tells me that the Northern and Eastern Counties have sold out of their 2003 calendars already, not surprising as they are eagerly awaited each year by many of us. The pictures of course are always charming and so much more enjoyable than the usual show poses showing the charm of the breed so much better and of course the calendars themselves are of super quality and with the show dates and judges given each month are an extremely useful aid for us all. I find them extremely useful for sending to friends overseas who are always thrilled to receive them, seems we will all have to remember to order next year's early to make sure they are not sold out too early!! Young Julia Gilchrist will be competing in the Pedigree Junior Handler of the Year Finals at Birmingham on 25 January and I am sure we all wish Julia every success in this competition. Phil Shirley has asked me to include the following " Philip Shirley writes, "A meeting was held on 4th Jan 2003 at Chirveley Village hall near Newbury, Berks, to discuss the formation of a Papillon Club to serve the interests of Papillon owners living in the South of England. A selection of names for this new club were discussed and the first choice that will be put forward is to be "South of England Papillon Club". The friendly and informal meeting was well attended and many good Ideas were put forward with regards to the aims of the proposed new club. An Interim committee were elected, a Buffet lunch followed with a well supported raffle . The regional co-ordinators who organised this meeting are thrilled and quite overwhelmed with the response from everyone who has requested to become a founder member, for that reason we will continue to accept founder members for the proposed new club up till the 7th February 2003 when we will submit our presentation & application for Registration of Title to the Kennel Club for their consideration. Dog World	A sad week. I am very sorry to have to report that Maurice Gonsalves (Gonmyn) passed away on 21 January. Maurice had not been too well lately and had been admitted to Hospital shortly before Christmas, sadly his condition deteriorated and he was moved to intensive care. He had the comfort of knowing that his family had flown over from Canada and were with him as were a number of his close friends. Mark and I first met Maurice in the mid 1970’s. In those days there were a number of societies that held shows in Hanwell, West London often putting on classes for the breed, something which was less common in those days, as a result of which we often used to meet up at these shows. Over the years we got to know him well and spent many happy times at shows, in those days it seemed that we were all much more able to enjoy ourselves at a show, win or lose and of course we all hoped to win, we still managed to have a good time. Often it was Maurice who helped make the day more enjoyable with his mischievous sense of humour. His first champion was Kenf’s Red Buttons, a pretty red and white bitch sired by Ch Inverdon Ganymede out of Gonmyn Nina Ricci at Kenf who was a direct descendant of Maurice’s foundation bitch Amber. Maurice was particularly proud of the success of his home bred Ch Gonmyn Inspiration, by Ch Caswell Principality out of Ablazzor Miss Pebbles at Gonmyn. This tri bitch had a successful show career here in the UK gaining CC’s at both Crufts and the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Championship Show before leaving the UK to go to Chie Ejima of the Art Etoile and Queen Bless Papillons in Japan. Inspiration proved to be not only a very successful show girl but an outstanding brood bitch and I think it is true to say that her progeny has helped the great success of the Art Etoile and Queen Bless Kennels. Quickly gaining her International and Japanese titles she produced some outstanding offspring and it was a daughter of hers that produced the PCA Specialty BIS and Westminster BOB Am Ch Queen Bless Success Story. Circumstances were such that Maurice was unable to keep more than one or two dogs at any one time and as a result there were periods when he was absent from the ring, but he always retained a keen interest in what was going on in the Papillon World. For many years he was an Area Representative for the Parent Club and over the years was a great supporter of the Benevolent Fund often helping out when Papillons needed rehoming. Sadly he never achieved his ambition of awarding CC’s in the Breed, although certainly he was qualified to do so, and it would seem politics and personalities played some part in this. Sadly as always there were those too quick to pass judgement on others and at times things were far from easy for Maurice. To his credit, through the good times and the bad he retained that mischievous sense of humour but underneath I am sure that he was at times quite hurt. I know many of us will mourn his passing, like others Mark and I were proud to call him our friend, he was always good company and I hope fervently he has found the peace and calmness which perhaps evaded him in life. Our condolences go to his family and we hope they will take comfort in knowing that we share their loss. The funeral will be held on Thursday 30 January at 2.30 p.m. at the North East Surrey Crematorium, Sutton, Surrey. Donations in his memory can be made to the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Welfare Fund and can be sent to the Welfare Co-ordinator Eileen Roberts. From the USA comes news that Virginia Newton has passed away at the age of 90 years. Her Mariposa Papillons are of course well known throughout the world and Mariposa are to be found in almost every American and Many Canadian Champion pedigrees. Her Ch. Gowdy of Mariposa sired 87 Champion get, and I understand is still the breed's Top Sire in the USA. I also read that every American and Canadian Best In Show Pap with one exception goes back to Gowdy. She was one of the post World War II pillars of the breed, in the USA and spent her life totally devoted to the breed. She is the author of THE PAPILLON PRIMER, a Club publication which was honoured by the Dog Writers' Association of America. She is survived by her daughter Esther, a Professor at the State University of New York and herself an author.to whom our condolences go.
Our Dogs	Two sad pieces of news this week I am sorry to have to tell you that Maurice Gonsalves of the Gonmyn Papillons passed away on 21st January. He had not been well lately and was admitted to Hospital just before Christmas, his condition deteriorated and he was moved to Intensive Care where he later died. Most of Maurices family lives in Canada and to them we send our condolences. Maurice and I knew each other for many years through many ups and downs and I know he was grateful to those Papillon People who helped him start breeding and showing again after he lost most of his stock. How successful this was culminated in his lovely Ch Gonmyn Inspiration winning the BCC at Crufts in 1994 and she later became UK, Jap,& Int Champion, which gave him great pleasure. The other loss is Virginia Newton of the Mariposa Papillons in USA. Her stock is behind many , many US and Canadian pedigrees her Ch Gowdy of Mariposa sired 87 Champions. She was a pillar of the breed in the States and wrote The Papillon Primer which is a delightful and informative book. She is survived by her daughter Esther, a Professor at the State University of New York and herself an author.

Dog World	I have been asked to mention that there has been some concern over approaches that have been made to a number of breeders to purchase stock. These have apparently originated from a man with an Irish accent who is apparently quite persistent and not easy to put off, and as usual bitches are the main request whether puppies or young adults. One should always of course be careful especially if one is inviting a prospective purchaser to one's home. In the world of birds many fanciers will simply not have anyone unknown visit because there are so many thefts, and the least anyone should do is to take a telephone number (a land line not a mobile) and ring it back to check the authenticity. As we have all read in Dog World thefts are not uncommon and great care has to be taken. A number of names have apparently been used and our Acting Secretary, Carolyne Allward Chebsey, can let anyone interested have details, but of course there is nothing to prevent this person from using other names. Apparently he is also quite persistent in trying to obtain names and details of other breeders as well so please be careful what you say to anyone and never pass on addresses to anyone you do not know. I mentioned a week or so ago that young Julia Gilchrest was due to take part in the Pedigree Junior Handler of the Year Final and I am delighted to report that she got a very creditable 5th Place. Julia was extremely delighted to have been short listed but not quite so sure when she was handed a rather strong Dalmatian and had to go straight back into the ring with him. It was certainly a very special day and one she will always remember. Many congratulations to her. I also mentioned recently the little 8 year old papillon Jake that was attacked whilst being walked with two other papillons and had mistakenly thought that he was owned by Denise Welsh as the original details had come through from her. In fact Jake is owned by Mr & Mrs McChan, strangely Denise knew of this because a friend of hers happened to be passing when it occurred. I believe Jake was bred by Val McGivern and Val tells me she has been to see him and I am pleased to say he is recovering well, although he was stitched all the way around his ribcage. Needless to say Mr McChan who had been walking the dogs at the time was extremely shocked and it is sad to learn that the police seemed quite disinterested. It appears they felt that as it was a dog that was attacked it was not that important but if it had been a child they would have acted, well of course next time it could be a child and one would have thought the prevention before would have been uppermost in their minds. I understand the dog in question was found abandoned and taken to a dog's home where he proved to be so aggressive that they had no choice but to put the dog down. It is sad that any dog has to suffer such a fate and the blame obviously lies in the hands of those who simply were not prepared to ensure the dog was safely maintained and it is a great pity that these people manage as often is the case to get away with it. We are now getting to the stage where it is simply unsafe in many places to take one's dog for a walk. Caroline Lee Farnsworth was pleased to her from the USA that Graycaz Ima Firestarter at his first show gained a three point major, so I assume was Winners Dog, for his new owner Lou Ann King From Aileen Goodwin in Scotland comes news that Jeanette MacKay's Jaylanjay Amastunner took BOB Best Toy at the Bon Accord Kennel Association Open Show and went on to take BIS. Amastunner who recently gained his Junior Warrant at 15 months has of course previously achieved such a high honour
Our Dogs	Val McGivern sent news of Jake, the little pap that was mauled by the SBT. After a further operation he was recovering well. The SBT was collected by the RSPCA and taken to Battersea Dogs home but they were not told why the dog was taken there. Maria, Jakes owner rang the home and told them the dog's history whereupon the staff muzzled him and took him on a lead past two other dogs as a test. He flew for them frothing at the mouth and was then put down as too dangerous to rehome. Without Maria's phone call another tragedy could have occurred. Maurice Gonsalves was cremated today, 30th and Donations on his behalf were requested for Papillon Welfare/Rescue they should be sent to Mrs E Roberts, 20 Glen Rise, Glen Parva, Leicester LE2 9HA. At the final of the JH Stakes Julia Gilchrist and her Papillon came fifth Congratulations on a great effort. Caroline Lee-Farnsworth was delighted to hear that Graycaz Firestarter went to his first show in the States with his new owner Lou Ann King and won a 3 point major I think we will be hearing more of him! News from Scotland of the popular Bon Accord KA at Aberdeen where Jeanette MacKay's Tricolour Jaylanjay Amastunner went BOB and Best Toy under Mrs D Hardie and then followed this up by going BIS under Mr Frank Kane!! I recently reported his JW which he completed at just 15months of age. Warnings from breeders on both sides of the Irish Sea of an Irish man or men who seem to be trying to buy a number of Bitch puppies/Adults and have given various names, he is most insistent that names and telephone numbers of other breeders are given to him. He denies being on the Puppy Register despite Margaret having one of his names there since early Jan with the same telephone number. His story varies as well. I do know that recently in S Ireland a Puppy farm was raided and the dogs dispersed so this may well be an attempt to restock, Beware! I have more details if you care to phone me.
