Bitch CC went to Liz and Alan Bartam's Ch Burghbridge Our Princess. The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club will be holding a Social Get Together and Barbeque on Saturday 2 August to be held here at our place and full details will be given shortly in the Newsletter. It will give papillon folk, whether members or not, the opportunity to get together away from the show ring and there will be an added attraction of a display of "Paws to Music" to be given by Mary Moffatt and Rooskie who will be showing how it should be done and another display by someone, who for the time being wishes to remain anonymous, showing how it should not be done. It promises to be quite entertaining. No admission needed, although donations to food will be gratefully accepted (hopefully we have some cake makers etc amongst us) and we will be laying on tea and coffee but no doubt some of you will want to bring your own liquid refreshments!!!! The day will start at around noon and we have no plans for a finishing time, much depends on when everyone goes!!!!
It would be an ideal opportunity to socialise young puppies but please ensure all your dogs are kept under control so as not to worry the chickens or ducks etc!!! It would be helpful if anyone wishing to attend could just let us know in advance, as soon as possible please, so that we know how many to cater for, and you can telephone either our Secretary, Carolyne Allward Chebsey on 01543 256394 or Mark and I on 01469 530760. You can however just turn up on the day and take pot luck.
Hopefully we will have a good turn out, it is hoped to have a raffle the proceeds of which will go to Rescue so it will be in a good cause. |

Pamela Taylor had a good day out at Dundee CC where her Pamhurst Lucky Devil won Best Special Puppy in Show. Niel Lieper with Graycaz Give It Up For Thello had gone BOB and also took Group 4 at the show.
A member of East of England Ladies KS committee is hoping to collect me and bring me to the Show at Newmarket on 3rd August. It is unlikely that I will be at the ringside but hope that people will come to see me in the Secretary's Office where they plan for me to be!! It is over 18months since I have been to a dog show.

My apologies to Pam Taylor for the belated reporting of her success with her 8 month old puppy Pamhurst Lucky Devil who took Best Puppy In Show at the Dundee Canine Association Open Show recently. BOB at the Show was young Neil Leiper with Graycaz Give It Up For Thello who also took Toy Group 4. Unfortunately one of my own 'little devils' managed to get hold of the note with the information and thought it would be fun to pass it on to the puppies who of course thought shredding it was a great idea!!!!
I was sorry to hear that Mavis Pratt had suffered another stroke and is presently in hospital. I understand Mavis is getting some movement back to the affected side but it is her third stroke I believe so she is likely to be in hospital for a little while. At the time of writing she is in Bassetlaw Hospital (Ward A4), Bassetlaw General Hospital, Worksop.
The South West Toydog Club are holding a Summer Party on 20 August at 7.00 p.m. at the Watchfield Inn, Watchfield Road (approx 4 miles from Junction 22 of the M5 in Somerset). The evening will include a Buffet, Parade of Champions, Puppy Party (to be judged by Mary Wilson of the Amalek ETT's) and a quiz where I am told cheating will be allowed!!!! All this for the princely sum of £5. Anyone and everyone is welcome, exhibitors for the Puppy Party must be members of the Club but membership can be taken up on the night. It would be helpful if anyone who wants to attend the Parade of Champions lets Ruth Boundy know by around the end of July so that she can prepare the order of the parade. More information can be obtained from Ruth on 01823 461525 or e-mail rubyfield@supanet.com
East of England was an extremely hot and at times uncomfortable day weather wise. The large under cover rings were extremely welcome but perhaps a little more thought could be put into providing space for exhibitors to sit with their trolleys and cages. At Peterborough our benching was a considerable way away from the ring and frankly it would have been impossible to bench there, keep an eye on the ring for one's class, particularly if you did not have someone with you to keep an eye on your other dogs whilst you were in the ring. As it was there was little space available in the gangways, having only one side of the ring available, as a result of which the gangways were very crowded and a good number of folk were obliged to have to park themselves out in the baking sun, fortunately many had umbrellas to shade themselves and their dogs. One cannot but notice how the 'rules' regarding where exhibiters and trolleys can and cannot place themselves appear to differ from show to show. At Three Counties the Show Officials were quite insistent on keeping all the ring side clear of trolleys, even those areas outside of the tents in the open field, the reasons being we were told because of fire regulations. Yet at Peterborough the gangways inside the tents were as I say quite crowded and personally I would have thought there far more likely to be a risk than at Three Counties. One can understand the requirements for safety, but it does seem strange that at one show exhibitors were not allowed around the ringside even in the open field, yet at another they were allowed to crowd themselves into a gangway under canvas.
Exhibitors pay a lot of money and it really is not too much to ask for reasonable sized rings, and reasonable accommodation around the ringside and under cover. I have to say it does seem unfair that those breeds who bring in reasonably large entries are given the same ring space and accommodation for exhibitors as a breed that produces far smaller entries. Perhaps something which Show Societies should take into consideration. It should not be too difficult to realise that if you only have one side of the ring available for exhibitors and the breed concerned has drawn a good entry then there are going to be problems if you have not provided space for exhibitors within a reasonable distance of the ring.
The Dog CC and BOB went to Inixia So Be It For Elendil, owned by Ann Borg and Sue Stanbury and bred by Sue. It was I believe his first CC, he is by Inixia Party Pooper out of Azinghar Perfect Bliss At Inixia. Bitch CC went to Carolyn and David Roe's recently crowned Ch Sunshoo Imastar Lighter. Reserves went to Rosemary and David Ayris' Ch Ibstock Marksman in dogs and Liz and Alan Bartram's Ch Burghbridge Our Princess in bitches. Best Puppy was Nouveau Less Is More owned by Mark and I.

Congratulations to Jo Davidson Poston whose Ibstock Bright Spark at Spinillons has gained his Show Certificate of Merit. This new title, which came into being in 1 January this year is gained by accumulating 25 points awarded at Open Shows (5 points for a BIS, G1 = 4 Points G2 =3 Points G3= 2 Points G4= 1 Point, BOB or BAVNSC = 1 Point) and at least 5 points must come from Group Wins. If my memory serves me correctly, which these days is not always the case, the award was brought in to encourage better entries at the Open Shows. Apparently Bright Spark is the first Papillon to gain this title and Jo tells me that only 4 Toy Dogs have yet done so. Bright Spark is also currently Top Papillon in the Hills League (he was Top Papillon in that last year) and 2nd overall in this for the Toy Group. He has attended 8 Open Shows this year. Congratulations to both Bright Spark and Jo and of course his breeder Rosemary and David Ayris.
At the Christchurch and New Forest 2 day Open Show BOB went to Viv and Kevin Butler's Lucindale Forget Me Not of Aristopaps who went on to take Group 1. Best Puppy was Philip Shirley's Cordonrouge Cameo who took Toy Puppy Group 2.
At the Evesham & District Open Show Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's Snowlord High Society took BOB, Best Puppy and Group 4 at his first show at the tender age of 8 months.
I mentioned a week or so ago when reporting on East of England that Irene and Glenn Robb's Gleniren Scarlet Monogram won the Junior Stakes on the day. They returned on the final day and were delighted that Scarlet Monogram was made the overall winner of these Stakes so will go forward later for the overall finals. Many congratulations to them both and of course to Scarlet Monogram
It's always nice to be able to report success of a newcomer particularly when the newcomer is a youngster so I was pleased to get news of the start young Abbie Gomez has made in the Breed. Abbie, who is nine years old, had some experience in dogs in as much as she has shown her mother's Siberian Huskie, but had always hankered after a Papillon. In May this year she obtained Chriskadu Black Diamond, bred by Chris Pougher, and has had a good deal of success in the short time she has been showing him. At her first show, the Derbyshire Agricultural Open Show at the end of June she took Best Puppy in Breed and 2nd place in a large Puppy Stakes Class, this being Diamond's first show at just under 10 months of age. A few days later at the Chasewaters Show she again took Best Puppy, won the Toy Puppy Group and also qualified for the Semi Finals of the Junior Handlers later in the year at Richmond. And at her first Championship Show, S Wales, Abbie and Black Diamond won the YKC Stakes (8-12 years old) qualifying for the YKC Finals to be held at next year's Crufts. Quite a start for this young lady and Abbie's mother tells me that both she and Abbie have been really delighted with the welcome and encouragement that Abbie has been given from others in the Breed. I am sure we will hear more of this young lady.
Phil Shirley writes "Over 120 members and 150 Papillon's gathered on July 19th to "Have Fun" at the Garden Party / Fun-Day organized by the South of England Papillon Club (proposed). The venue at Chieveley Village Hall near to Newbury in Berkshire looked very inviting festooned in balloons and bunting. Lots of fun events were arranged and the day kicked off with a display of Mini Agility organized by Denise Welsh (of Papillon agility fame) along with her able team of helpers. Papillon's took flight over the various items of agility equipment accompanied by hoots of encouragement from the audience, after the display , Denise invited everyone to "have a go" on a shortened course. In another ring Papillon's were "having a go" at a fun good dog test while the in the main ring many Baby Puppies were paraded in a fun "puppy walk" so important for learning their early socialising skills. A lovely Buffet lunch was served to top up the energy for the afternoon events, which started in the main ring with fun breed related "Bits 'n' Bobs" classes, who was to win the Best Ears? The Best Hare Feet? The Best Phalene ?
The many stalls were busy all day selling all sorts of Plants, Cakes and Produce and Butterfly related "Bring and Buy", there were Tom bola & Raffle stalls and a "Guess the Famous Papillon's" competition. The Patron of the proposed new Club Mrs. Sue Jones very generously donated a delicious "Cream Tea" for everyone, with the Clotted Cream hand delivered fresh from Devon. During this welcome break the various raffles were drawn and also a hilarious Fancy Dress Parade took place, The proposed clubs chairman Mrs. Pearl Peacock brought the festivities to a close by thanking everyone for attending and contributing to such a successful and happy day, saying she hoped this was to be the first of a regular yearly event. The Fun-Day generated several hundreds of pounds which will be split between club funds and breed welfare."

I hear that Glenn Robb showing his and Irene's Gleniren Scarlet Monogram was the overall winner of the Junior Stakes at East of England Ch Show, Congratulations !
What a success the South Of England Papillon Club(proposed) had when over 120 members and 150 Papillons took part in the Funday/Garden Party held by them at Chieveley Village Hall near Newbury. Surely an indication that a Southern Club is viable and indeed, needed, to cater for the large numbers of Papillon Enthusiasts in the large area which it will hopefully serve. Agility demonstrations and Agility Have-A -Go were organised by Denise Welsh and were very popular There was a fun 'good dog' test , a Baby Puppy Walk, Breed related classes for Best Ears, Best Hare Feet, Best Phalene etc. Lots of Stalls selling Plants, Cakes and Produce, Butterfly Bring &Buy. A Buffet, Cream teas and Competitions made for a very enjoyable day and raised several hundreds of pounds which will be split between Club Funds and Breed Welfare. This is the first of many enterprises I have no doubt
Congratulations to Jo Davidson-Poston and Zebedee(Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons on being the first Papillon to be awarded the new Title Show Certificate Of Merit. Only 4 other toy breeds have produced one and he is also Top Papillon in the Hills Leauge and 2nd in the Toy Group in the Country all from the 8 Open Shows he has attended this year. Well done!
Melanie Mann, now resident in France took Melangel Dolly Dreamgirl to her first French Show after having had puppies. She won First in Open Bitch , was graded Excellent and won a CAC.
Philip Shirley tells me that Viv and Kevin Butler showing their Lucindale Forget Me Not Of Aristopaps won BOB and the Toy Group at the Christchurch and New Forest 2 day Open Show . I also hear from Viv &Kevin that Phil took Puppy Group 2 with Cordonrouge Cameo at the same show!

David Roe judged at Leeds and found his Dog CC and BOB in Irene and Glen Robb's home bred Gleniren Scarlet Monogram (Ch Ringlands Hologram out of Sunshoo Imascarlet Erika at Gleniren) and Monogram went on to take Group 3 under Claire Coxall (who of course had previously made Monogram the overall winner of the Junior Stakes the week before at Peterborough). This was Monogram's first CC. In bitches it was also a first CC to Philip Shirley's home bred Cordonrouge Ciara (Glasafon Welsh Gold at Cordonrouge out of Cordonrouge Classic Minx) and I believe a first CC also for Philip. Reserves went to Carole and Gerry Stones Ch Genevieve Flirtie Bertie (whose details I have given previously) in dogs and Mr F & Mrs A Comrie's home bred Frasermar Ice Maiden (Ch Martika What's The Story out of Frasemar Snow Queen) and she was also Best Puppy.
The following day the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club held their Open Show on Sunday 27 July at the new venue of the Thorpe Willoughby Village Hall and what a super venue this turned out to be. Plenty of space inside the hall for the very good entry, plenty of parking space, easy access and of course the Club's famed refreshments. As we have come to expect from this club the show was run with flawless efficiency and the specials given to each first prize winner are really beautifully done, so much so that I wonder if any of the dogs ever get to enjoy the little bone biscuits that make them up or whether exhibitors keep them as mementoes. Having these decorated with blue ribbons for the males and pink for the females is really a nice touch.
Best Dog and BIS went to Joan Savage's Abbeyton Silver Rain. As Joan could not be present on the day Silver Rain was prepared and handled by Hilary Byers, and Hilary had previously handled him to BIS at the Scottish Papillon Club Open Show earlier this year. Best Bitch and RBIS went to Viv Cotton's Aporia Secret Love with BP going to JaneThompson & Sandra Austin's Jhanakia Highland Breeze
Mark and I were pleased to hear from Tiia Koskinen of the White Fairies Kennel in Finland that her new import from Japan, Queen Bless JP Now On Tri, at his first International Show in Finland took the CC,Cacib and BOB. Tiia, who also took the Bitch CC with Connection Give Me A Kiss, was one of our overseas visitors at the Club Championship Show earlier this year and of course donated the two lovely plates as special prizes. Queen Bless JP Now On Tri is by Eng Ch Nouveau Lord of Misrule out of Northlyte Queen Of Diamonds so whilst bred in Japan is all UK breeding.
In Australia Sharon Mahoney had a good day at the Harden Murrumburrah All Breeds Kennel Club taking the CC, BOB and Group 1 with (Mondelise Fuji Kiseki who is litter brother to their successful Mondelise TM Opera.
At the recent Bon Accord Open Show held in Aberdeen Anne Macgregor's Pyatshaw Silver Tassie took BPIS.
The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Newsletter which is due out shortly, having unfortunately been delayed because of problems at the new printers, will contain details of a 4 Breed Super Match to be held next year. The King Charles Spaniel Club previously held a very successful 3 Breed Match and many will have read the write up in this in Dog World by Rose Massey who wrote at the time "The King Charles Spaniel Club's Three -Toy Breed Super Challenge proved to be more than a super challenge. It was an extravaganza of super Toys". The article goes on to say "With many of the year's top winners on parade the judges were going to have a taxing and thought-provoking time on deciding the eventual winner"
The Match will be held on 20th November 2004 at the Hanover International Hotel, Bromsgrove, on the M5/M42 junction at a cost of £30.00 a ticket, inclusive of all activity for the day. The hotel also provided special rates for overnight accommodation and indications are that the costs will rise slightly. Qualification to take part in the Match will be that between Richmond Championship Show 2003 and the Welsh Kennel Club Championship Show 2004 (both included), a 'dog' needs to win a CC, or a RCC, or a BP, or 2 First places in qualifying classes.
More details will be available in the months to come but something to put in your diaries now and look forward to and I do hope we will get as many papillons as possible taking part, and winning!!!! |

David Roe judged at Leeds and his DCC and BOB was Irene and Glenn Robb's Gleniren Scarlet Monogram who went on to win Group 3 under Claire Coxall, RDCC was the Stone's Ch Genevieves Flirtie Bertie JW and BCC went to Philip Shirley's Cordonrouge Ciara JW, RBCC and B Puppy went to Mr & Mrs Comrie's Frasermar Ice Maiden.
A wonderful entry of 132 awaited Des Jenkins at the N&E Cos Open Show and his BIS was Joan Savage's Abbeyton Silver Rain who was prepared and handled by Hilary Ness ( now Byers) and Joan was thrilled especially as Hilary had also handled him to BIS at the Scottish Papillon Club Show in March. RBIS and BB went to Stuart Cotton's Aporia Secret Love and B Puppy was Mike Foster and Mark Billinghurst's Nouveau Less Is More. JH 6-11 was won by Emma Peters and 12-16 by Sophie Langdon
Marian Sloan has kindly brought me up to date with some Irish Shows At Sligo & Dist(my mother was born in Sligo!!) DGSand BOB was Dolly Kavanagh's Denemore Treasure Ikon, GSB Sloan's Austrene Light Up The Stars. RGSD Sloan's Austrene Imelectric and RGSB Pearson's Tedlyn Twilight Twilight Breeze.
At Dundalk GSD and BOB was Dolly's Treasure Ikon and Marian thinks that this gives him his Irish title. GSB was Twilight Breeze
Marian also has given me a list of Ir Ch Sunshoo Imastarlett's winning progeny's sucesses in July alone A Copper Glow won GS and BOB, A. Imelectric BOB Ch Sunshoo Imastarlighter CC at EofE, A. Light Up The Stars GS and at Dundalk Imelectric and Star were in the final 8 of the Puppy Stakes and Star was 4th overall. Quite a winning little family and I am sure we will be hearing more of them
I have just heard from Mike Foster that the BBQ planned for 2 August has been cancelled owing to Mary Moffatt having hurt her back and as her 'Paws To Music' was to be the main attraction it was better to put it off Mike hopes he has been able to contact everyone who was coming. Such a pity it is just the sort of gathering that the Ppillon folk need to get together at and relax.
I am sorry to tell you that Marjorie Scott of the Glenmargo Papillons in Canada has died. She made up many Can Chs including Can Ch Glemnargo The Red Nugget and at one time visited the Papillon Show I think. She had been a member of the Papillon Club for many years. |
