I mentioned earlier about Les Young being in Hospital and at the time of writing these notes he can be reached at Pilgrim Hospital, Ward 11A, Fisbey Road, Boston, Lincolnshire. I am not sure whether he is expected to be out shortly or not so it would be wise for anyone wishing to send greetings to confirm he has not yet been released. We hope it is not long before he is back home.

Some exciting news from Australia for Carolyne Allward Chebsey who recently exported Lorah's Hot Shot to Rebecca Grabham (Welona Papillons). Hot Shot has now gained his Australian Title and becomes Carolyne's third champion.

Queenie Bruce had a good weekend recently. At the Oldham CS Open Show Tijuana Georgio took BPIB and went on to take PG2 and the following day at Nottingham Sherwood Foresters Open Show Georgiou again took BPIB, this time with PG1 and ended up BPIS. At this show Queenie also took BOB with her phalene boy Tijuana Melody Maker.

I have heard that the Christmas Party Match held at Burgess Hill by the South of England Papillon Club was a great success.
January 2004
Dog World I am sorry to have to report that Les Young passed away on January 2. Les along with his wife Ruth was a member of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club for very many years, a past Chairman and Vice Chairman and at the time of his passing a Vice President. The funeral is to be a private family one only to be held at 11.30 at the Crematorium in Lincoln, with a Thanksgiving Service to be held at 12.30 at the All Saints Church, Ruskington, Sleaford. The Family have requested no flowers but donations are welcome and will be split between Cancer Research and the British Heart Foundation. These should be sent to the Funeral Directors R. Phillips Funeral Director, 69 Station Road, Ruskington, Sleaford Lincs. NE34 9DF. Our condolences go to Ruth and family.

I gave some details recently regarding the success of Ch Genevieve's Flirtie Birtie at the Brussels Winners Show where he took 1 Ex, CAC, CACIB, BOB, Best Toy of the Belgium Breeds and Group 3 in the Toy Group and now have some details of more success for him. At the Kortrijk Eurodogshow Belgium he took 1 Ex, CAC, CACIB, BOB and Best of the Belgium Breeds - Champion Class and at the Wijchen International Dogshow, The Netherlands 1 Ex, CAC, CACIB and BOB. Needless to say Carole and Gerry Stone are delighted with his continued success.

At its recent Meeting, the Committee of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club appointed Mrs Bubbles Wood Davis as Acting Benevolent Find Administrator and Bubbles will now be dealing with this role. Her telephone number is 01386 870963 or e-mail bubbles51a@ic24.net.

As was mentioned recently in the Newsletter, members are always welcome to put forward suggested names for judges for any of our shows and indeed the committee encourages member's participation in this. It is never easy to 'find' a judge, we do try to get 'new' faces judging although of course have to balance that with the need to ensure the judge concerned is experienced. One aspect we have looked at is bringing over judges from overseas, in the past such judges have attracted good entries and generally bring a 'fresh eye' to their task. With this in mind we have appointed Don Mahoney of the Mondelise Papillons in Australia to judge our Open Show next September. Needless to say I shall not myself be entering under Don, in light of the connection between our kennels I would have thought it obvious I would not but it seems this is not the case. Having made that clear I do hope he gets a bumper entry, it will be his first such appointment here in the UK, although he has judged the breed many times in Australia and elsewhere.

I am sure everyone will have read in the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Newsletter, if not previously in these notes, that the Club is hoping to hold a Seminar on PRA on the date of the AGM, 2 May. As mentioned in both the Newsletter and these notes unless we can be certain that sufficient people are interested it simply will not be worth the time, effort and expense of arranging this, certainly it would be embarrassing to find that our proposed speakers having given up their time to attend were faced with a handful of people. Members were asked to let David Abbott know if they would be interested in attending so we could get some idea of numbers and I am very sorry to learn that apart from two people no one else has bothered to respond.

The lack of response may be for various reasons, perhaps folk think everyone else will respond so they need not bother to make the effort, or perhaps folk simply are not interested in learning more. I hope the latter is not the case, PRA is an important subject and we here in the UK simply cannot just hide our heads in the sand and say it is something that does not affect our papillons here. Do folk not realise that at least two English bred papillons from English lines have been positively identified as carriers???

Clearly David needs time to organise the event, however he has agreed that if there is sufficient interest shown by the end of January to warrant putting on a seminar he will proceed but it is up to all of us who are interested to let him know by then. It only takes a telephone call to him at 01453 890322 or an e-mail to David@lrpaps.freeserve.co.uk to let him know of your interest. Quite what overseas breeders and exhibitors, particularly those from those countries who have made great efforts into researching PRA, will think of us if we simply cannot be bothered I do not know.

Dorothy and Jimmy Simpson have a new address which is Brimmond, Hazel Old Lane, Hensall, Nr Goole, DN14 0QA, the telephone number remains unchanged. They have certainly had a few problems since moving into the new house and Dorothy has not been too well having had a touch on pneumonia. However I understand she is now feeling a lot better and hopefully their difficulties will soon be ironed out.  One cheery event to brighten things for them was that their new 6 month old Bitch Puppy Penang Faberge took RBPIS at Bridlington, her first outing.

My thanks to Sue Victor for reminding me that the annual Pedigree Masterfoods Stakes Finals take place on Saturday 24 January at Stoneleigh and will include the JHA Final. In recent years paps have been well represented in the finals, Glenn Robb who has participated twice, Julia Gilchrist and Emma McLaughlin who this year will be taking part in her second Final.A pleasing record for the breed and our youngsters especially as "stacked" breeds are easier to show well and we all know how trying it is when your pap is demonstrating it's similarity to a butterfly when the judge is looking!! This year Emma will be showing with Abbeyton Silver Phantom. Over 1000 youngsters competed at the semi finals at Richmond and only fourteen made it to the finals. Emma is obviously delighted to have got this far and is hoping the only butterfly behaviour on the day is in her stomach...not at the other end of the lead! At the semi finals at Richmond Glenn Robb of course judged the younger age group class and to be asked to judge the handling at this level is also a considerable accomplishment. I am sure all the pap people wish Emma every success on the day.

Liz and Alan Bartram have both been suffering with the dreadful cough that seems to be doing the rounds amongst humans at least!!!! Fortunately they felt well enough to attend the Chesham & District Canine Society Open Show where their Burghbridge UR Classic Gold took BOB and Toy Group 1 under Mrs Sheila Sadler. Nothing like a nice win to make you feel a little better.

I am sorry to tell you that Les Young of the Rutlie Papillons and the past Chairman of the Papillon Club has passed away. Les served the Club well as Committee member, Vice Chairman and finally Chairman. Laterly he has had an interest in Birds and was very active with these.  To his wife Ruth and his son and daughter go our condolences.

At a recent meeting of the Committee of the Papillon Club Mrs Bubbles Wood-Davis was appointed as Acting Benevolent Fund Administrator and any matters relating to the Benevolent Fund should be directed to her at Tel; 01386 870963 or e-mail bubbles51@ic24.net  She has a hard act to follow in Elizabeth as I'm sure she would be the first to agree !

There has been a very poor response to the request for support for a PRA Seminar to be held on the day of the Papillon Club's AGM on 2nd May.  Obviously unless more interest is shown before the end of January it will be too late to ask speakers etc to give up their time to take part. Please contact the organiser David Abbott before then to give him some idea of numbers who wish to hear about this important condition bearing in mind that at least two British bred papillons from British lines have been identified as carriers. David's tel: 01453 890322 or e-mail David@lrpaps.freeserve.co.uk

The Papillon Club Chairman Mike Foster has asked me to mention that the Papillon Club has appointed Don Mahoney of the Mondeliese Papillons in Australia to judge their September Open Show in 2004 and in view of the fact that they share a close friendship Don and his wife Sharon will probably be staying with Mike and Mark so of course none of the Nouveau dogs will be entered at the Show

The annual Pedigree Masterfoods Stakes Final will be held on24th January at Stoneleigh, this includes the JHA Final and Emma McLaughlin with Patrick (Abbeyton Silver Phantom) will be taking part.  This is Emma's second time in the Finals,  Glenn Robb also took part twice and Julia Gilchrist once.  1000 youngsters competed at Richmond and only 14 made it to the Finals so I hope every one will wish Emma Good Luck as she represents our lovely, clever papillons.

Liz and Alan Bartram had a good start to 2004 when at their first show of the New Year their Burghbridge U R Classic Gold took BOB and Toy Group 1 under Mrs Shiela Sadler at Chesham & Dist CS Open Show at Slough on the 4th.

There seems to be a lot of controversy about the two new classes at Crufts for dogs which have won Good Citizen Awards.  Whilst I applaud the Award scheme in principle I'm afraid I do not see how it can be part of what is in fact a judgement of soundness and beauty.  Temperament has always been judged by the bearing and attitude of the exhibit and there is no indication of how  the judge should tackle these classes.  Surely the existing classes are more than adequate for what has always been seen as the main purpose? What do you think?

Nice to see newcomers to the breed being successful. At the Luton Canine Association Show on 29 December, Carol and Graham Fitch took BPIB with their Graycaz Lifes A Beach and went on to take Puppy Group 2. On 10 January this year they again went BPIB at South West Essex Canine Association Open Show and this time went on to take the Puppy Group. And how nice to hear that they were made so welcome to the breed by their fellow exhibitors at these two shows. Hearing their success at SWECA brought back some memories as for a number of years I was Treasurer of that Association back in the early 80's. In those days we used to run if I remember correctly 3 Open Shows a year at the Harwood Hall Equestrian Centre, some of them quite large shows held over two days with very large entries. We always used to get a very good entry of papillons as the breed was becoming a little more popular at that time and we had quite a number of exhibitors within the area.

Not much more news around at the moment so chance to start a discussion or two in the vain hope that someone out there might want to respond???

A couple of interesting articles in Dog World over the last few weeks caught my eye. Firstly in the December 12 issue in Pamela Cross Stern's 'Bees in Her Bonnet' column, she starts her column saying "I have always been a great believer that the art of breeding good dogs is to breed to the Standard not to alter the Standard to what is being bred".  If you have not read it I suggest you do so. It seems such an obvious comment doesn't it, after all do we not all breed with the standard in mind?? And if we do and our dogs don't fit that standard is it not obvious that we have failed rather than the Standard that is wrong??  Of course there are elements of the standard open to interpretation and different eyes see things differently, were that not the case the results would be the same week after week, but there are aspects of the standard which simply cannot be interpreted differently. A fine silky coat is a fine silky coat, a woolly stand off coat is a woolly stand off coat. Now I am not saying that owners of those with woolly stand off coats have suggested changing the standard but there does at times seem to be a willingness to accept woolly stand off coats as being acceptable 'within' the standard. Similarly the standard says "Forelegs straight, slender and fine boned" and for feet "Fine, fairly long, hare-like" not round heavy bone and round cat feet. We should look for a dainty well balanced little dog, what does little mean?? Well we do have a height of 8 to 11 inches, so why are we hearing that 9.5 inch dogs are small, is that not middle of the standard. Just because every other dog in a class is up to size (or over??) does not make the odd one out at 9.5 inches small does it?? I am afraid the overall look of some in the breed is changing, look back at the dogs that won well 10, 15 years or so ago and many today will look of a different type. One exhibitor who has been in the breed a number of years told me that when discussing a dog in the ring another exhibitor told her 'well you would like him he is the old type" I ask the same question that the first exhibitor asked "when did they change the standard??" To my mind if you have to seek to change the standard to fit your dogs you have failed in your attempt to breed a good papillon.

The second article was from Andrew Brace's column "Going Around" in Dog World January 9. You can always rely on Andrew for a good thought debating column, and whilst one may not always agree with him he does get you thinking.  The part of this article which caught my eye was that relating to training dogs to stand like statues. I have to say I personally dislike this in our breed, I like to see a papillon dance about and if a judge needs a papillon to be standing like a statue to assess it well maybe that judge should be doing another breed where stacking is the norm. Obviously one cannot expect the dog to behave like a total hooligan in the ring but a little animation is surely to be encouraged it adds so much more to the charm and beauty of our breed. Perhaps the problem lies, as do so many, with an eye to the 'big ring' most breeds are standing inanimate and perhaps too often a group judge will simply not accept a papillon dancing around.  Andrew mentions the 'latest invention' which trains dogs to stand still and I must admit I have had one of these now for some time. These did it seem originate in the USA where I am given to understand papillons are expected to remain almost motionless. Having used mine very occasionally I can see some benefit in that strangely enough I have found it easier to table train puppies on these but once they are back on terra firma their natural playfullness comes into play. So perhaps they have a use.  All joking apart we do have a problem in that with so many breeds standing like statues the 'odd one out' may be overlooked as being wrong, just as with the 9.5 inch dog in a ring of larger ones, but the point is the odd one out here is not wrong. The answer is for judges to be better educated as to the acceptability and normal practise of a breed and to accept that rather than to put their own dictates of how they want a breed shown on that breed. Hopefully judges and exhibitors will take note of Andrew's words????

Our Dogs

Its good to receive some Open Show news.  Caroline Lee-Farnsworth reports that new Papillon owners Carol and Graham Finch took their new puppy, Graycaz Lifes A Beach to Luton Canine Ass under Mike Gadsby and won Best Puppy going on to win Puppy Group 2 under Jean Lanning.  They again won Best Puppy IB under Karen Maskell and 1st in Puppy Group under  Freda Marshall at a show on 10th January. A great start for newcomers to the breed and it is good to know that they said that they were made very welcome by the other Papillon Exhibitors in the Breed at these two shows.

I understand that Rosa Wardle's husband has been ill over the Christmas break.  I am afraid I have no other details but I hope he will soon be better

Another piece of Breed History was made at Manchester when Ellis Hume gave the CC and BOB to Carine Rutten with her well known Int & Multi Ch Anthony. Whilst not the first CC and BOB for an Overseas exhibitor (that of course being Am Ch Cadaga's Civil Action at Crufts last year) it was the first time an Overseas exhibit in our breed took a place in the Group, in this case Anthony went on to an impressive Group 2. A strong Group it was too as the Group 4 position went to the LKA BIS Maltese. Anthony, who has had many successes on the continent, was bred in Scandanavia (I believe Finland) by Galina Ujomova out of her first litter!! Anthony is by Connection Coronationcard out of Pamparix Charmant Blanche and Carine obtained him after seeking the help of Vesa Toivanen in Finland whom she had approached asking him to find her a super papillon!! Well he certainly did that.  Bitch CC went to Christine Turner's home bred Lady in the Wings with Longcrags, I believe her first CC she has a Reserve CC to her credit.  She is by Longcrags Samuel out of Starting Over. Reserves went to Jenny Scovell's Caswell Classic Tri in dogs and Liz and Alan Bartram's Burghbridge URA Golden Lady in bitches. Best Puppy was Caroline Lee Farnsworth's Christea By The Emma Envy TAF.

The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club will shortly be sending a notice to all members to advise them that following the publication of the Preliminary Notice for the AGM in the December Newsletter, our Vice Chairman and Show Manager David Abbott has decided not to seek re election to these positions. David is finding it increasingly difficult to get cover for his dogs when he is away and understandably feels unable to leave them unattended for such lengthy periods as would be needed to carry out these duties. David took over the role of Show Manager at a difficult time and despite his reservations in taking on this role he has done a wonderful job, the 80th Anniversary Show which the Club held last year in particular was an outstanding success, much of which was due to David's work. Because Club members would have been under the impression that he was seeking re election it was felt by the committee that the only correct course would be to let members know this is not now the case. To assist members who may wish to put forward a nomination for either of these positions, or indeed of course any position, a pro forma is being sent for members to complete and it is hoped that we will see a few more people coming forward who will be willing to devote some time and their talents to the Club. It would perhaps also be nice to see some 'younger' people coming forward.

Our Dogs

Ellis Hulme judged Manchester at the new venue at Stafford and his DCC and BOB was Miss Rutten's Int & Multi Ch Antony over from their home in Holland - a worthwhile trip for them as they went on to take Toy Group 2 under Martin Freeman.  His ear fringing looks spectacular in the OD photograph. RDCC went to Jenny Scovell's Caswell Classic Tri.  BCC was Christine Turners Lady In The Wings With Longcrags and RBCC was the Bartram's Burghbridge Ura Golden Lady.  B Puppy went to Caroline Lee-Farnsworth's Christea By The Emma Envy and Best Veteran was Jenny's Caswell Copper Charmer.

The move of venue gave Manchester an increased entry of 3500 dogs so it was well worthwhile for them.  Parking at Stafford is so hassle free compared to the G Mex Centre that it must have been a big consideration for exhibitors when they decided to enter.

Jo Davidson-Poston's Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons ShCm has won a place for the second year running into the East Anglian Super Match which takes place on Feb 28th.  Good luck and Congratulations.

Congratulations to Hilary Byers (nee Ness) and her husband on the birth of their first child, Logan James Byers, born on 22 January and weighing in at 6lb 15oz. I am sure  Granddad Jim is equally as proud.

Congratulations also to young Emma McLoughlin on a super achievement at the Junior Handler of the Year which took place on 24 January where she took 2nd Place in the overall Final. Quite rightly Sue and Ian are as proud as punch of her and I can do no better than to use their on words in describing this achievement. "For those not familiar with the strange world of Junior Handling this is a National competition, held annually. Approx 3000 juniors enter, with 1000 or so reaching the semi finals at Richmond Ch Show each September. At the semis, this number is reduced to 14 in 3 days (sort of sudden death!). The lucky 14 (one aged 6-11 and one aged 12-16 from each of the seven groups of dogs) then spend the winter alternately fretting and practising madly until the Final. This is a very posh do held alongside the Pedigree Champions and Veterans Final. The final is judged by someone well known from the world of handling. This year it was Geoff Corish. First, the finalists compete with their own dog, then the judge shortlists to the final six. The six are then given a dog they have never met before, have 5 minutes with it's owner, then go back into the ring to show off what they can do. The organisers try to give a dog as far removed from their own breed as possible! Emma got a Hungarian Visla (no coat, no tail and very long legs!). To Emma's credit, she followed the owner's instructions to the letter.....she doesn't usually run that fast...even when late for school! After showing the Visla, it was a quick change back to her pap...then back in for the placings. The overall winner was Kate Vincent, handling a Field Spaniel and Border Terrier. Emma won £285 and a lovely trophy! We have explained to Emma that all of you that have been supporting her in her endeavours will meet her at the bar at Crufts and the drinks are on her! Needless to say, she laughed (the money has been earmarked to buy presents for her dog and pony!) Emma had a wonderful day and fully intends to try again this year with the hope of reaching the finals again. As usual, we are proud and delighted with her achievements."

Over the last few years our Juniors have done extremely well and we should all feel very pleased that we have in our breed such talented and dedicated youngsters, they are after all the future of the breed and we should all do all we can to encourage and support them.

Jo Davidson Poston tells me that for the second year in a row her Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons SH CM has won through to a place in the East Anglian Super Match to be geld on 28th Feb. Good Luck to Bright Spark in the finals.

I hear that  Kingshaven Tomfoolery bred by Jean and Roger Banfield has won his Japanese title in three straight shows which is very pleasing for them. I do not have any further details but if these come to hand will publish them.

Like many other parts of the country we have had quite a lot of snow up here which has meant the dogs have not been able to take as much exercise as they are used to. Fortunately with a large warm garage they can manage some exercise still which helps tire the youngsters out for a while!! It manages to tire us out as well as it does mean clearing a pathway to the garage and around the patio. Of course one or two always manage to escape, especially the youngster who seem to think playing in the snow is great fun. The cats think they are mad of course!!

Our Dogs

My four remaining paps - all girls - were less than enthusiastic at being put out into a snowy garden yesterday and today. I reminded them how much they all enjoyed bouncing about in the snow when young but it had no effect and they are spending the time firmly tucked up in their warm beds!!

Jean and Roger Banfield have had  good news from Japan where their Kingshaven Tomfoolery has just won his Japanese Title in straight Shows while still a Junior.

Hilary Byers( Nee Ness) of the Chappell Papillons gave birth to a son Logan James Byers on 22nd January Congratulations to all the family and how proud Hilary's mother would have been!  He weighed in at 6lb 15 ozs and I hope in time to see him in the JH classes!

And wonderful news about our gifted Junior Handler Emma McLaughlin who has gained 2nd place in the overall Finals.  A great achievement,  Emma had to beat many others and apart from handling her Papillon she had to handle another breed at only 20 mins acquaintance.  In Emma's case this was a Wiemeraner   just as different from a Pap as can be and a different type of handling required.  A terrific result Emma, Congratulations and keep the flag flying!
