February 2004
Dog World No Notes
Our Dogs
Details of the Crufts entry are out. There are 237 dogs giving 257 entries and they are scheduled to be judged at 0830 til 1700.  I hope they will finish in time for the Group this year but it must be very borderline.  When will they ever learn?!

Carolyne Allward-Chebsey has asked that anyone who has articles or adverts to put in the Papillon Club Newsletter that they ensure that they are with her by the end of the month and she points out that without contributors there would be no Newsletter for you to enjoy. Remember the same thing is true of the Breed Notes!!

Dog World
The entry for Crufts this year is 237 dogs making 257 entries, which is 22 dogs less than last year. The Breed has the highest single entry for one judge for the day, of the Toy and Utility Groups only the Cavaliers have more dogs entered and of course they have a judge for each sex. Let us hope that the relevant authorities have taken on board the complaints after last year's fiasco and that all BOB's are able to make the Group this year. I notice from the various Breed figures that in the massive entries that both Golden and Labrador Retrievers have in both breeds, whilst they too of course have a judge for each sex each of the sexes has itself attracted extremely high individual entries. In one case, golden bitches, the judge there will face an entry of 300 which will make it a very long and tiring day for that judge.  I am sure many will be watching to see how the authorities handle the matter this year.

A reminder from the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's Newsletter Editor, Carolyne Allward Chebsey, that all articles etc for the next issue should be with Carolyne by the end of February. And don't forget that without contributors to the Newsletter it would not be so interesting and full as it is so do let Carolyne have any articles you think may be of interest. The Newsletter is not just for reporting Committee business of show results, many of our members are pet members and they appreciate articles about ordinary life with dogs. It is also a good place for us all to share our varied experiences about any aspect to do with the dogs, sharing such experience may well help someone else.

Whilst on Papillon Club matters a reminder that of course Membership Renewals were due at the beginning of the year so if you have not yet sent these off (there was a form to assist with this in the Christmas Newsletter) please do so as soon as possible as it does make the Treasurer's life a lot easier if they are renewed early.

News from the Westminster Show in the USA, which some describe as the USA equivalent of Crufts. Can't see the comparison myself, whilst both shows require some form of qualification for entry, Westminster's entry is much more restricted than Crufts. I understand the overall entry is restricted to 2500 dogs, the top 5 dogs in each breed are invited to enter and have a time limit in which to send off their entries. After this time limit has been reached, entry is opened to champions only on the basis, I am told, of first come first served, and the cut off apparently is usually reached within an hour of being thrown open!!! I am told that each breed is allocated a set number of entries which presumably ensures that each breed receives fair representation. It does seem that certain people always manage to get in so I don't know how fair the system is but it is their system so it's not for us here to judge. Some may feel Crufts is fairer and therefore more competitive. The entry at Westminster was only 24 papillons, 7 of which were absent, so on the day only 17 to be seen. Mind you one would not have to worry there about not making the Group!!! BOB went to Am Ch Cadaga's Civil Action, last years BOB at Crufts of course, owned by Linda Sohn & Kyoko Ozeki and bred and handled by John Oulton. BOS was Am Ch Astrea Of Green Partner JP owned by Lorelei L Bacchus & Chie Ejima & Daniel A Bayless and bred by Masao Hayashi. Awards of Merit went to Am Ch Wingssong And The Crowd Roared, Am Ch Caprice N Flashpt Ghost Buster and Am Ch Queen Bless JP Royal Silk.

Christine Turner has asked me to mention that her Longcrags prefix is now jointly owned by herself and Elaine Davidson, who Christine describes as her 'doggy daughter' for almost 20 years (could have put it abetter way Christine but we all know what you mean!!) Elaine and her husband Martin have further celebrations due as they are looking forward to the birth of their first child in June this year. Elaine has handled Christine dogs for the the past year now as Christine's health has not been the best, and has had some very good results starting with a First place at Crufts last year and during the year including a Res CC at Three Counties and the Bitch CC earlier this year at Manchester.
Our Dogs
A letter from Christine Turner tells me that her longtime  'doggy daughter' Elaine Davidson has now joined Christine as joint owner of the Longcrags Affix. Elaine has handled the Longcrags for the past year with some good results starting with a First at Crufts,a RCC at 3 Counties and the Bitch CC at Manchester with Lady In The Wings at Longcrags under Ellis Hulme

Elaine and Husband Martin are looking forward to the birth of their first child in June and Christine looks forward to some pram pushing in 2004 Good Luck for the future and keep well Christine!

Penny Robins writes that at Lichfield CS Open Show her Jaroma Lady of The Glen got RBOB then at Rugby& Dist CS and Heywood & Radcliffe she again won BOB and Group 3.

I recently gave details of the winners of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's Annual Trophies and am now able to give the missing results being the Working and Obedience Trophies. Winner of the Murvagh Trophy for Top Working  Papillon  was Margy Wigan's Murvagh Rippling Stream and winner of the Fleur-de-Lys Trophy for Top Papillon in Obedience was Miss D Deuchar's Shamal Sequel.

Beckenham Canine Society will be scheduling Papillons for the first time at their Open Show to be held on 25 April 2004 at Lockmeadow Market, Maidstone. I believe full details of their schedule will be advertised in Dog World on 6 February. Hopefully they will receive a good entry.

Pearl Peacock was taken into Hospital yesterday suffering from Appendicitis and is being operated on today.  Lets hope that by the time you read this she will be back home again. Make Frank spoil you when you get home Pearl!!

By now all Papillon Club Members should have their copy of the KC Health Survey It is quite a comprehensive form and I can see that when all are coordinated they will indeed give a good picture of a Breed's health and hereditery complaints, surely a worthwhile object and worth a little of your time to complete.

A reminder from the N&E Cos Pap Club that their Limited Show with David Smith judging will be held at Thorpe Willoughby on Sunday 28th March and not as printed in the Calendar which had gone to press by the time the date was confirmed.  Schedules are available from John Edson Tel: 01757 268213

I have also received the Schedule for the S Wales Pap Club Open Show on Sunday 4th April at Markham Sports & Leisure Centre with Angela Cawthera-Purdy judging.  Karen Farrell the Secretary has a new address and schedules are available from her at 72A Attwood Close, Basingstoke, Hants RG21 8YY Tel: 0783339449.

The Schedule came with the latest edition of the S Wales Newsletter now being edited by Amy Holmes and a very good start she has made, well laid out and with interesting articles  I also see from it that June Gummer is now the representative for Pap Rescue Wales her Address is: The Cottage, 131 Cardiff Rd, Taffs Well, Cardiff CF4 1HY Tel: 02920810387.

By the way, in case anyone hasn't noticed, Papillons are scheduled to go into the ring at 0830 am at Crufts I this does happen and we all know how difficult it is to ensure that, it may mean that the BOB makes the Group this year.  Have you also noticed that UK Toydog has given Papillons two judges this year ?  Thank goodness to see a little common sense becoming apparent.

The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club held its Open Show on 22 February at a new venue in Daventry. Not a bad venue either, plenty of parking and enough room. Could have done without the road closure and directed route which took us all round the countryside. BB and BIS went to Kay Stewart's Tussalud Cruella De Ville. BPIS went to S Langdon & C Lee-Farnsworth' s Graycaz Tongue In Cheek and bred of course by Caroline. Best Veteran was Jenny Scovell's lovely Ch Caswell Coppatina belying her 10 years and looking as young as ever.  RBIS and BOS went to our Powdermill Touch of Art Nouveau, bred by Ruth and Ann Weston. I know Dog World do not usually allow me to print RBIS and BOS results but hope they will make an exception in this case if only so that Mark and I can thank everyone for their congratulations knowing how difficult it has been to get Perry's confidence back after he was attacked at East Of England at the ringside. Having had a successful championship show debut by taking the Res CC at his first show and the CC and BOB at his second, to have this happen at his third show was quite disheartening. I know quite a few of you have had similar problems and it seems it is often the case that the more intelligent the dog the harder it is to get them to regain their confidence. Perry being almost scarily intelligent has taken a while but thank heavens it now seems to be getting back to his old self.

A bag was left behind at the Open Show, it is green with the logo and details of a Garden Centre in Hants on it. The owner should contact Carolyne Allward Chebsey who is looking after it.

The Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Members Limited Show will be held on Sunday 28 March and not on the date shown on their 2004 Calendar, apparently the date of the show had to be changed after the Calendar had been printed. The Venue is the Thorpe Willoughby Village Hall, bear Selby, and this really is a lovely venue. The Judge is David Smith JP, entries close on 8 March and if you have not yet received your schedule contact Secretary John Edson on  01757 268213.

The S Wales Papillon Club Open Show is to be held on 4 April at at Markham Sports & Leisure Centre where the judge will be Angela Cawthera-Purdy . The Club Secretary, Karen Farrell, has recently changed address so if you have not yet received your schedule you should contact her at her new address which is 72A Attwood Close, Basingstoke, Hants RG21 8YY Tel: 0783339449.

I was sorry to hear that Pearl Peacock was taken into hospital on 18 February with appendicitis and will have had her operation the following day. Hopefully Pearl will be back home by the time these notes are out and well on the road to recovery. Pearl of course is die to judge bitches at the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Championship Show on 11 April, with Pat Munn judging dogs, and we hope she is fit enough by then. Schedules for the show are now available, entries closing on 12 March, and if you have not yet had your schedule contact David Abbott on 01453 890322.

At the Easington and Peterlee Open show Terri Justice and Nigel Thurman had a good day taking BOB with their Lysandra's Zxar and BP with Lysandra's Tenica.

Congratulations also to Angela Skelton and her 6 month old Abbeyton Sweet Dream who took BPIB and Puppy Group 1 at the Dumfries and District Canine Club's open show.

Our Dogs

Carolyne Allward-Chebsey was the judge at the Papillon Club's open show on 22nd Feb.  She found her BB and BIS in Kay Stewart's Tussalud Cruella De-Ville with RBB being Rosemary & David Ayris' Ibstock Adorable for Tussalud.  BD and RBIS was Mark Billingshurst & Mike Foster's Powdermill Touch of Art Nouveau and RBD was Anne Stevens' Tawzan Fun and Fancy Free.  BPIS went to Langdon & Caroline Lee-Farnsworth's Graycaz Tongue In Cheek and B Veteran was Jenny Scovell's Ch Caswell Coppatina.  6-11 JH was Abbie Gomez and 12-16 was Vikki Loader

A very attractive shopping bag was left behind after the Show. It is dark green and white with Wooden bars as handles and has Avenue Nurseries Garden Centre with an address in Alton Hants and a wheelbarrow full of flowers on the front.  Carolyne says that she hasn't yet eaten the two bags of crisps or drunk the water which was in it!! She will bring it to Crufts/UKToy/Pap Club Ch Show where the owner can collect it from her

Congratulations to Angela Skelton and her puppy Abbeyton Sweet Dream at only her second show and just 6 mths old who went BPIG at Dumfries & DCC on 22nd.

Some interesting information provided by Elizabeth Patrick and Joan Savage about the American Judge for Papillons at the May SKC Mrs Anne Katona is from California and her main breed is Kerry Blues, she is approved by AKC for the whole Terrier Group, Sporting Group, Miscellaneous Group , Seven Toy Breeds and BIS.  Her Affix is Tyrella and she had Kerrys for 27 yrs with many top wins.  She has also bred S Coated Wheatens and Norwich Terriers and Judged in Australia, N Zealand, England, Canada, Mexico, Thailand and S Africa. So now you know - Perhaps there is a shortage of Papillon Specialists in the World!!

Schedules are out for the Papillon Club's Ch Show on 11 April and can be obtained from David Abbott on 01453 890322 Entries close on 12th March and Carolyne will try to have some Schedules to hand out, with her at Crufts

Have a very enjoyable day out at Crufts and let me know how you get on as sadly I will not be there again this year.  Good Luck everyone.
