For those planning to attend to the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club AGM please note there has been a slight change of venue to that given earlier. The Club has been advised that this will now be held in the Banbury Room not the Balmoral Room.
I was pleased to hear from Pat Munn that Norma is feeling a little better and Norma has asked that her thanks be passed on to everyone who sent flowers and good wishes to her, she really was touched by everyone's kindness.
At the St Patrick's Day Show in Dublin the Dog GS, CACIB and BOB went to Jo Davidson Poston's Ibstock Bright Spark of Spinillons who went on to take Group 2. Bitch Breen Star and CACIB went to Dolly Kavanagh's Denemore Rainbows Cameo. Reserve went to Margaret Widera's Oldcourt Captain Kid at Balamunch in dogs and Ms K Miller's Feorlig Sweet Sensation in bitches. BP was Mrs. S. Belshaw's Belvisaj Simply Charming which I am told was placed in the Group.
At the Clydebank and District Canine Club open show Elaine Davidson (Longcrags) was judging the breed for the first and she found her BOB in Joan Savage's Abbeyton Silver Rain ShCM.
Eng Ch Genevieves Flirtie Bertie has been acquitting himself well on the continent for his new owner Mrs Abeloos-Devos. At the international Dogshow at Munchen he took the CAC and CACIB and BIG 3 and more recently in Hoogstraten (Belgium) he not only took BOB but also the Group and ended up RBIS. I am sure Carole and Gerry must be delighted all this good news coming at once with the new baby.
Malcolm Green has asked me to pass on his thanks to all those people who so kindly sent good wishes and cards on his recent 80th Birthday. He tells me he and Joanna had a lovely day and was very touched by everyone's thoughts.
Helen Verity's Macstrak Minuet JW took BOB and Group 2 at the Otley Open Show.
Shirley Colyer asks me to mention that there is a change to the advertised Judge of Papillons at the the Suffolk Agricultural Show to be held on June 2nd. Anne Worrow (Khanness) will now be judging the breed in place of Eileen Roberts.
Congratulations to Erin Boal (Erinsjoy) on the birth of a son Rhys on 19 March. Rhys who was quite premature weighed in at only 3lb 9oz and after some concerns is now doing well although at the time of writing is still in intensive care. We all hope both he and Erin will soon be home, proud grand parents Carol and Martin Wilson I am sure can hardly wait.
At the UK Toydogs Show the breed was fir the first time I can remember, except for Breed Club Shows, allocated a judge for each sex. Gordon Urquhart doing the dogs and Joe Kirk the bitches. Dog CC and BOB went to Rosemary Ayris' Ch Ibstock Marksman whose breeding I have given before. Bitch CC, her first I believe, went to Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's Serenglade Enchanted Lady for Temelora bred by Linda Greenslade, she is by Kingshaven Rooney at Serenglade out of Serenglade Serene. Reserves went to Graycaz In The Red owned by Caroline Lee Farnsworth and Mrs C Brookfield and bred by Caroline in dogs and Queenie Bruce and Amanda Bruce-Jackson's Ch Tijuana Tiller Girl in bitches. Best Puppy was Penang Faberge bred and owned by Jimmy Simpson.
Queenie Bruce had a super day at the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Members Limited Show taking BIS with Tijuana Georgio and BPIS with Macstrak Classic Jazz.
At the Cleater Moor Open Show Sue Deamer took Reserve Best in Show with Bankshill Isle of Lewis and also took Best Puppy in toy group with her CKCS puppy.
The sad news has just reached me that Christine Turner (Longcrags) passed away on Sunday 28 March. Although Christine had been unwell for some time and had been hospitalised on a number of occasions her passing was unexpected. I do not have any details of the arrangements at the present time but as soon as these are available will post them on the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club web site. Our condolences go to the family at this sad time

I am sad to have to tell you that Christine Turner(Longcrags) has died. Christine fought her illness for years with great courage and a wonderful determination not to give in and I am sorry to hear that she has lost the last battle. Her father was the first owner of the Longcrags Affix and Christine carried it on with great success producing a string of winners not least the lovely Longcrags Archimedes and the bloodline is behind quite a few good dogs. Christine had just taken Eileen Davidson into joint ownership in the Affix and I know she was thrilled at the success Eileen had showing the dogs in recent months. I hope that the Longcrags will continue.`
Christine's funeral will be on 2nd April at Ayr Crematorium, Mason hill Ayr at 2pm. I realise that this will be published after this sad event but to any who wish to remember Christine the family would be pleased if donations in her memory should be sent to The Scottish Liver Transplant Unit, Caroline Srevenson, Asst Operations Manager , Transplant Unit, Room S3317, Royal Infirmary, Edinburghh, Little France, Edinburgh EH16 4SU Great Sympathy goes to her family.
Two Judges shared the Papillons at UK Toydog Ch. Gordon Urquhart for dogs and Joe Kirk for bitches. DCC and BOB was Rosemary and David Ayres' Ch Ibstock Marksman and RDCC went to Lee-Farnsworth&Brookfield's Graycaz In The Red BCC was Morrell& Teagues' Serenglade Enchanted Lady for Temelora, RBCC went to Bruce & Bruce-Jackson;s Ch Tijuana Tiller Girl. Best Puppy was Jimmy Simpson's Penang Faberge.
At N&E Papillon Club Ltd Show judge Mr David Smith JP found his BIS and BB in Queenie and Amanda's Tijuana Georgio with RBB being the Robb's Gleniren Jump'N Jive. BD &R BIS was Thompson & Austin's Janakaia Royal Highlander JW and RBD and B PIS went to Queenie's Macstrak Classic Jazz.
At Cleater Moor Show in Scotland Sue Dreamer went RBIS with her Bankshill Isle of Lewis and she also went BPIG with her Cavalier!
Best Puppy at IKC St Patrick's Day Ch which I was not able to include in last week's report was Sue Belshaw's Belvisaj Simply Charming. Tom Thumb as he is called is litter brother to B Simply Chic who won the Puppy Bitch Class. They are from Sue's first home bred litter and he went on to be 5th in the Group. At Newtonards D CC under IKC rules he also won BPIB, BOB, Toy G 2 and BPIG. Then at Queens Island CC Open Show He again won BPIB beating his sister and went on to be BPIG. Clearly a very promising young man but one thing is different for him. Sue his owner and Breeder is disabled and shows Tom herself in a wheelchair, as she puts it with the help of a "pusher" Sue hopes to come over to some of the Mainland shows with her dogs this year and I wish her every success. |

At the South Wales Papillon Club Open Show BIS went to Sue Stanbury's Inixia Troysdale Time Traveller with BPIS going to Norma Staff and Pat Munn's Echoes of Gold Ringlands.
News from the Sydney Royal where Dog CC & BOB went to D Cavanagh's Aus Ch Pompillon Pepe Le Pew. No CC. or Res CC, was in fact awarded in bitches although I see there were a number of Champions placed. I am sure it caused a few raised eyebrows. Sharon Mahoney (Mondelise) who is currently visiting S Africa where Don is judging will I am sure be disappointed to have missed the show.
I hear from Carol Wilson that her new grand son Rhys is making good progress, he is now off oxygen, Hopefully in about two weeks time he will be able to be fed naturally. Mother Erin too is feeling much better now that Rhys is over the most critical stage and the family would like to say thank you to everyone who was kind enough to send cards and messages.
The family of Christine Turner would like to express their thanks to everyone for their condolences. The wish was expressed that anyone thinking of sending flowers instead send a donation to the Scottish Liver Transplant Unit in Edinburgh, the full address of which is The Scottish Liver Transplant Unit, Caroline Stevenson, Assistant Operations Manager, Transplant Unit, Room S3317, Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, Little France, Edinburgh, EH16 4SU. Christine's funeral took place on Friday 2nd April at Ayr Crematorium, Mason Hill Cemetery.
I gave some details earlier on the St Patrick's day show and now have some more information regarding the Best Puppy Winner. This was Sue Belshaw's Belvisaj Simply Charming and is from Sue's first litter and I understand he was placed 5th in the Group, at the same show his litter sister, Belshaw's Simply Chic also took the Puppy Bitch Class. Not his first good win either, at the Newtonards Open Show he took BPIB, BOB, Toy G 2 and BPIG. His breeder, Sue, is disabled and shows her dogs herself in a wheelchair which makes the wins even more remarkable.
I seem to be getting quite a few enquiries for puppies, mainly bitches of course but sometimes a male, from folk who either already have a papillon (of the opposite sex) or are looking to get one of each sex. Sometimes the story is they are just for pets sometimes the folk indicate they want a litter 'for fun'. Usually I tell such folk that most breeders if they sell a dog or bitch as a pet intend the puppy to be just that, a pet, and not to be bred from and often also not for exhibition. Sometimes it is difficult to get across to people why this is so and often when I tell them that breeders will either endorse the papers to that effect or not pass across papers then interest is suddenly lost. I do hope however everyone is careful when selling puppies to ensure that if they are not selling it for breeding purposes the papers at least are endorsed properly to that effect, whether it is a male or female is immaterial. Disappointingly I did have one person come back to me and tell me they managed to get a male from another breeder quite easily on which their were no restrictions in fact no questions were asked and it seems the intention was to produce a litter 'for fun'. I would have hoped everyone would have had more concern not only about their own stock but about the standard of the breed in general, perhaps the price was more enticing than the concern????

The S Wales Papillon Club Open Show was judged by Averill Cawthera-Purdy and her BD and BIS was Sue Stanbury's Inixia Troysdale Time Traveller with BB, BOS and RBIS going to Osborne's Tykkydewas Honisuckle Rose. BPIS was Norma Staff & Pat Munn's Echoes Of Gold Ringlands. Best JH was Cara Allsopp.

Kim Mckay of the Arkeno Papillons Canada who owns AmCan Ch Brentville The Entertainer At Tussalud has written to tell of his recent successes, bred by Brenda Taylor he has just got his 4th All Breed BIS. He is currently the No 1 Toy and No1 Papillon in the Country and is also a multiple Speciality winner His sire is of course Kay's lovely Disney.
Carol White with her Abbeyton High Flyer(Yoda) who is not yet 2yrs old went to their first outdoor agility competition at Monmouth and won first in Starters and now moves up to the intermediate class. agreat start for such a young dog and perhaps another Papillon star in the making. Congratulations
Carol and Martin Wilson of Erinsjoy Papillons have been having a worrying time in the last couple of weeks when daughter Erin went into labour at 29 weeks giving birth to Rhys who weighed only 3lb 9ozs He was very poorly at first but now seems to be turning the cornerand is out of intensive care and into the Special Care Baby Unit where they are pleased with his progress. Erin is also much improved now that Rhys is over the critical stage. I know everyone will wish them well.
I mentioned last week that i was not sure if it was necessary to book a Lunch at the papillon Club AGM and Carolyne Allward-Chebsey tells me that it is not as the Canteen will be open as usual so no lunches need be ordered in advance.

Very little news around at the moment after the Club Championship Show and although the first day of the PCA Specialty has taken place I don't have any information from it as yet.
One sad piece of news to reach me was to hear from Shirley Colyer that she had lost her Nouveau Little Meggy at just over 15 years of age. Although she won the CC at Manchester a good number of years ago, Meggy was not campaigned greatly but proved her worth as a dam and produced a number of lovely papillons for Shirley. In particular when mated to Nouveau Envoy she produced the brother and sister Shirando Chocolate Soldier and Ch Nouveau Shirando Strike It Lucky. Mark and I have always been grateful to Shirley in that she gave Strike It Lucky to me as a birthday present at a time when certain events had made us question as to whether we wished to continue breeding and showing. I know Shirley took great pleasure in Strike It Lucky's successes in the ring. In particular taking the Bitch CC at Crufts in 1996 and later in the year BIS at the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Championship Show. Meggy's influence through her offspring and on through their progeny (particularly the offspring of Chocolate Soldier and Strike It Lucky) has been quite considerable, but more importantly to Shirley she was a special little girl and I know losing her has left a big gap at the Shirando's.

The Wilderness garden is trying hard to show all the Spring flowers at once The orchard is carpeted with cowslips including new patches of our tan coloured ones - they must be hybrids but between what!? Primroses are in all the beds and hedges and they also come in a variety of colours and here and there are the white violets which will soon carpet the orchard. Sadly the grass needs cutting!! The outdoor Shows will soon be in full swing!!
One family whose enjoyment of these has been( temporalily I hope) spoiled is Sue & Ian Victor and Emma whose Caravan has been stolen. It was taken from a friends farm where it was parked. Ian asks that anyone who sees an Avondale Lady Grampion, Cream in colour with Farleysbane Papillons on rear and off side, as they travel around to let them know Unfortunately it will probably have been repainted by now. Six others were stolen locally in the same nightobviously by a professional team. Ian says that Emma is OK as she has her own tent!! Its no joking matter though. I hope they will soon have news of it or a replacement.
No show news has come this week, don't forget to let me know of any of your successes at the Open Shows.

After a couple of weeks with little news I seem to be awash with news this week.
At WELKS Dog CC and BOB went Jenny Scovell's Caswell Classic Tri, I believe his second and details of his breeding were given a few weeks ago. Bitch CC, I believe her first, went to Liz and Alan Bartam's Burghbridge USA Golden Lady again her details were given recently as both Classic Tri and URA Golden Lady took the Reserve CC's at Manchester earlier this year. Reserves this time went to Jan Abeloos Devos' (I hope I have that correct) Int Ch Kingshaven Quicksilver De Costalina in dogs and to Eileen Roberts' Chriskadu Black Saphire By Rayol JW in bitches. Best Puppy was Queenie Bruce and Amanda Bruce Jackson's Macstrak Classic Jazz.
In Ireland at the Cork and DCC Ch. show GSD & BOB & 3rd in toy group went to Dolly Kavanagh's Serenglade Gold Sovereign. GSB to Carrigteen Apatura Iris, RGSD to Dolcissimo Date With Destiny and RGSB to Oldcourt Moments of Magic
At the Drongan and District Canine Club general open show Angela Skelton's Abbeyton Sweet Dream at Adnamashan took RBPIS
Sue and Ian Victor had the unfortunate experience of having their caravan stolen not only unpleasant but also of course curtailing any caravanning at dog shows. The caravan apparently was stored in a friends field. It seems to be a rising problem, my sister and brother in law had their own caravan stolen some while ago, this having been taken from the front garden at night whilst they were asleep in the front bedroom. In fact the thieves even managed to take down the fence to get it out without disturbing anyone!!! Sue and Ian have I believe been thrown a lifeline by Queenie and Dave Bruce who have lent them their own caravan for the time being, what a super gesture.
Some news from Australia, at the Canberra Toy Dog Show Michelle Chipperfield's Ch Betisechien Blitz Em All took the Botch CC, BOB, Runner Up BIS and Best Australian Bred Exhibit. RBOB and Dog CC went to Burleeds Sammy Soapsuds also owned by Michelle. Also in Australia at the Gunnedah Kennel Club show Sharon Mahoney's phalene import, Caspians For Pleasure took the CC, BOB and Group 1, a great result for a phalene. At the show the following day Sharon's Mondelise Fuji Kiseki took the CC, BOB and second in the Group gaining his Australian Title at the same time
Carine Rutten's Ch Anthony continues his winning ways on the continent, at an International Show in Holland he again took the CAC, CACIB and BOB went on to win the Group and ended up BIS3.
I suppose for many the big event was the PCA Specialty in Portland and thee were I believe a number of UK visitors to the show including Carolyne Allward-Chebsey and Caroline Lee Farnsworth. Hopefully we will et a full report of the event in the next Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Newsletter. BIS went to the dog Am Ch Domino's Toast of the Town owned and bred by Leona Domino and Laura Temperato. Leona of course was until very recently chairperson of the PCA Genetic Committee and has undertaken a lot of work towards raising funds for the various research programmes the PCA undertake, so it is nice to see her get this award. BOS went to Am Ch. Astrea of Green Partner JP bred by Masao Hayashi and owned by Lorelei Bacchus, Daniel Bayless, and Chie Ejima. BOW was Josandre' I Walk the Line bred by Mary Jo Loye and owned by Carol and Paul McLaughlin, and Mary Jo Loye. A full list of winners will I am sure be available shortly on the PCA's web site at http://www.papillonclub.org |

Jean Grant was the judge at WELKS and her DCC and BOB was Jenny Scovell's Caswell Classic Tri - I think this is his third CC but am not sure, correct me if I am wrong. RDCC went to Abeloos-Devos Int Ch Kingshaven Quicksilver Decostina over from Europe to compete. BCC was the Bartram's Burghbridge URA Golden Lady and RBCC went to Eileen Roberts Chriskadu Black Sapphire By Rayol. BPuppy was Queenie Bruce and Amanda's Macstrak Classic Jazz.
Principal Winners at the National Speciality were Winners Bitch, Garofalo's Involve If They Could See me now; BOB Domino&Temperato's Ch Dominos Toast Of The Town; Best Of Winners Josandre I Walk The Line; BOS Bacchus, Baylis & Ejima's Ch Astrea Of Green Partner JP; Best Puppy Hutchinson's Janais Strange Brew
From Eilish Neally come the results of Cork&DCC Ch Show. GSB, BOB & Toy Group 3 Dolly Kavanah's Serenglade Gold Sovereign RGSD Killeen-King's Dolcissimo Date With Destiny who I think was also B P. GSB went to Eilish Neally's Carrigteen Apatura Iris And RGSB was Shanahan's Oldcourt Moments Of Magic. Sean Carroll& James Newman's Pom won the Toy Group.
It is good to hear of an act of great kindness. Following the theft of their Caravan Ian and Sue Victor have been lent Queenie Bruce and Dave's Caravan to take them on holiday. What a wonderful gesture!!
Some congratulations, Rosemary Hobson went to Barrow Open Show with her Bribers Lynette of Rosanjon and were 3rd in the Toy Group and Angela Skelton with Abbeyton Sweet Dream at Adnamashan went Res Best Puppy IS at Drongan & Dist CC Open Show.
I have received news of the weekend's activities of the South Of England Papillon Club's AGM day which started with the Charity Walk on the Ridgeway in aid of Macmillan Cancer Care. Local regular walkers were amazed to see between 80-100 papillons going through their paces to earn their sponsor money. Luckily the weather was glorious and after a super lunch prepared by Rita Dack and Anne Borg and their helpers a cheque for £2195 was presented to the Macmillan Fund and there is still more money to come in so the final total will be somewhat higher !! What a great result!
The day continued with a talk and slide presentation by Eileen Clayton showing her Papillons doing 'Search and Rescue' in the Welsh Mountains, working on the Blaenog-Festiniog Railway, working as PAT dogs and helping a Newfoundland friend doing 'water rescue'
Denise Welsh then gave an interesting presentation of Papillons in Agility giving some new members a chance to 'Have a Go' themselves The Papillons seemed to enjoy racing around the Agility course.
The afternoon presentation of 'Papillons Do Other Things' was brought to a close with Anne Borg introducing Mrs Doreen Amos with her Hearing Dog For The Deaf, 'Roddy' Doreen enjoyed her day and being able to lip read was able to tell everyone how Roddy helped her in her everyday life.
The Club's first AGM then took place and the following Officers and Committee were elected; Chairman Mrs P Peacock, Vice Chairman Mr I Chandler , Hon Secy Mr P Shirley Hon Asst Secy Mrs Anne Borg Treasurer Mr I Dack, Committee;Mrs Casey, Chandler,Dack, Stanbury, Welsh,Wilson, Ms Unwin, Miss Deuchar Mr Pearch and Lt Cdr B Cox RN. The meeting closed with a cream tea.
Brian Cox who is Trophy steward and Stall Holder Thanks everyone for their kindness and generosity, the Club Stall raised over £105 and there are now only three or perhaps four remaining slots for trophies, Contact him if you would like to fill them!!
As a tailpiece can I tell you that the oldest human walker on the Walk was Eileen Clayton's Auntie Marg who did about three miles and is almost 93! She had walked three miles the week before just to be sure she could do it!! What a lady!!!!! |
