It is with deep regret I learnt that Gwen Swann had passed away. At the time of writing I do not have any details of funeral arrangements although I believe this is to be a private family occasion. A full appreciation will be printed next week

Phil Shirley has kindly let me have the following report of the recent Charity Event held by the South of England Papillon Club.  It certainly sounds as if the day was an extremely successful one and the amount raised for a wonderful cause was quite astonishing. In these days when too often dog owners are treated almost like second class citizens by some authorities such a worthwhile exercise certainly helps to redress the balance. I do hope that the locals newspapers gave it a decent coverage. Congratulations to all concerned.

Phil writes "The South of England Papillon club recently held a very successful Charity event combined with their A.G.M.  . the local regular walkers on the Ridgeway in Berkshire were amazed to see between 80 - 100 Papillons going through their paces to earn their sponsors money for the "Papillons walk for Charity" which this year was held in aid of Macmillan Cancer Care. Luckily the weather was glorious , the walkers retired to the Village hall in Chieveley for a super lunch prepared by Rita Dack and Anne Borg and their band of helpers. After lunch the Club was delighted to present a cheque to a  lady from The Macmillan Fund  for £2195.50 , with more money still coming in the final total will be somewhat higher. The day continued with an especially interesting slide presentation and talk by Eileen Clayton introducing her papillons doing "search and rescue" in the Welsh mountains, working on the Blaenau-Festiniog railway, workings as "Pat Dogs" and also helping a Newfoundland friend doing "water rescue"

Denise Welsh then gave an interesting presentation on Papillons in agility, this gave some new members the idea they would like to "have a go" themselves, Papillons really do seem to enjoy racing around the agility course. The  afternoon presentation of "Papillon do other things" was bought to a close with Anne Borg introducing Mrs Doreen Amos and "Roddy" her Papillon Hearing dog for the Deaf. Doreen enjoyed her day with us and being able to lip read was able to tell everyone how "Roddy" helped her in everyday life.

The Club then held their first A.G.M. the officers & committee for this year will be as follows Chairman Mrs P Peacock, Vice Chairman Mr I Chandler, Hon Secretary Mr P Shirley, Hon Assistant Secretary Mrs A Borg , Treasurer Mr I Dack, Committee members : Mrs J Casey, Mrs J Chandler, Lt.Cdr. B Cox RN, Mrs R Dack, Miss D Deuchar, Mr A Pearch, Mrs S Stanbury, Ms M Unwin, Mrs D Welsh, Mrs C Wilson.

The day came to a close with everyone enjoying a lovely cream tea kindly provided with funds from the clubs very generous Patron  Sue Jones."

I recently gave details of the PCA Specialty results, I now have details of the results of the Papillon Association of Puget Sound held just after the Specialty. BIS went Involo If They Could See Me Now bred and owned by Michael  & Donna  Garofalo (this bitch had taken Winners Bitch at the Specialty) BOS went to Am Ch Queen Bless JP Royal Silk (who had taken an AOM at the Specialty), BOW went to Serenglade Blue Tango owned by Karen Murad and bred here by Linda Greenslade. Awards Of Merit: went to Josandre I Walk The Line,  Am Ch  Wingssong And The Crowd Roared, Am Ch Adfam's Romeo of Elmac, Am Ch Cadaga Civil Action and Wildway's Queen Bless Delight.

At the Land "O" Burns Canine Club general open show Angela Skelton continued her run of success with Abbeyton Sweet Dream at Adnamashan by taking the Toy Puppy Group.

Congratulations also to Denise Welsh and Harlie who won the Open Agility at Lewes Show beating 138 dogs. A super achievement
Our Dogs
It is with great sadness I have to tell you that Gwen Swann passed away in her sleep in the early hours of Monday morning.  Her health had been giving concern for some time and she was in her nineties.  Gwen was a long and valued friend to me and my family ever since we moved from Devon to Suffolk in 1969 and she is survived by her husband Aubrey whose health has also not been good, daughter Joanna and her two delightful daughters.  Gwen's involvement with dogs stretches back to the 1920's when she exhibited her Alsatians at the Crystal Palace.  Then Miss Gwen Ledger, she followed these with Fox Terriers and then Borzois, Then over 60 years ago at Crufts she saw a Papillon and from then on she was never without one til her health deteriorated.

Her first Papillons came from the Moorlands Kennel of Mrs Pope with whom she became quite friendly and in 1938 she joined the Papillon Club. and in that year she was awarded the CC at Crufts with her Auricula, after winning another CC and with the advent of war she sent him to America to Mrs Forest-Danielson who swiftly made him an Am Ch and in 1944 Gwen was granted the Affix Lacewings a tribute to Auricula's long black lacy fringes - incidentally he was a deep red with a black blaze.

In 1940 she purchased the house  'Offley' from Mrs Langton - Dennis and had a long friendship with her using many of her famous sires and making many visits to the other great ladies in the breed who lived in a fairly small area of the South.  When war came, breeding was greatly curtailed and many dogs succumbed to Hardpad just after it ended. Gwen was put on to the Papillon Judging list in 1948 and joined the Papillon Club Committee in 1949.  In 1950 she awarded CCs for the first time at Croyden Ch Show and in the same year married Aubrey becoming Mrs Swann.

Gwen was always very fond of the Phalene and owned and bred them at the same time as her papillons I had the privilige of seeing her lovely Lacewings Lique when quite an old dog and she was exquisite. Her first Phalene was born in 1936 and she had reached her fourth generation of these when poor health forced her to stop.

Gwen served in quite a few positions on the Papillon Club Committee and had two terms as President  1978 to 1984 and then 1994 to 2002 ,  For some years she had been the Patron of East of England Ladies KS whose committee she also served on since the 1960s.  She was a very great lady and never seemed to be old,  her enthusiasm and love of the breed never dimmed and I share her family's sorrow at her passing.

It has been a sad week for dogs as Jackie Ransom also passed away last week . A Toy judge of distinction and another very good friend. Condolences to her son and devoted sister-in-law Marjorie.

Eilish Neally awarded her first Green Stars at the Fermoy &DCC Ch Show and her BOB &GSD was Marian Sloan's Austrene I'm Electric who went on to be Toy Group 2, RGSD was Marian's Austrene Once Upon A Time.  GSB went to Kilpatrick's Sonsirae Polgara The Sorceress and RGSB was Marian's Austrene Light Up The Stars

At S Tipperary Ch Show with Tom Mather Judging BOB &GSD was Kileen-King's Penang Goldenleas Rougemist, RGSD was Dillon's Oldcourt Look Terrific            .  GSB was Kilpatrick's Sionsirae Polgara The Sorceress and RGSB her Sonsirae Misty Lass.  Eilish also tells me that Dolly Kavanagh's Serenglade Gold Sovereign who gained his Irish title two weeks ago has been made up to Danish Ch Handled of course by Sean Carroll.

Sue Morrell thanks everyone who contributed to the Raffle at the Papillon Club AGM. A sum of £73 was raised. Those attending enjoyed the demonstration of Heelwork to music and the Clicker training.

Some Congratulations are in order for Papplewick Pumpkin Ridge whose owner's name I don't know for winning B Puppy in Toy Group at Seaham & D S open Show. Another BPI Toy Group for Angela Skelton and Abbeyton Sweet Dream At Adnamashan  at Land'O Burns Open Show and to Mrs Haslett with her 8month old Stevden Lord Of The Dance who went RBPIS at Selby Open Show.  Well Done to you all! and especially to the Great Harlie The Magnificent who with the help of Denise Welsh took on 138 dogs at Lewes Show and won the Open Agility!

The Papillon Club has acquired some copies of a useful book published by the PCA by Thos K Graves who is amongst other things a Dr of Veterinary Medicine. It is entitled Common Medical Disorders of the Papillon and was sold at £15.  All the initial copies have now been sold but if anyone is interested in a copy please get in touch with Mike Foster who is compiling a list in the hope of ordering some more from the States

Anyone who has puppies available do please register them with Margaret Unwin who runs the Puppy register.  She is not on the Internet , her Phone number is 01243 862169 and she says she has lots of enquiries but there seem to be few puppies available.  Remember that you must do your own checks Margaret merely passes on the information.

Dog World
I am sure we will all have been extremely saddened to have heard that Gwen Swann had passed away. Gwen first started showing dogs in the early 1920's exhibiting at her first show a GSD (of course in those days it was called an Alsatian) and winning a second prize. Other breeds followed, Wire Fox Terriers and Borzois and in the early 1930's came her first papillons and with it an involvement in the breed that lasted the rest of her life. Gwen became a member of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club in 1938, surely she must have been one of, if not the, longest serving members of the Club. She first awarded CC's in the breed in 1950, at the now long gone Croydon Championship Show, in 1950 and since then has done so on many occasions both here and overseas.

Gwen was first elected to the Committee of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club in 1949 and served the Club in a number of capacities including as Cup Steward and was elected President of the Club for the first time in 1978 until 1984 and again from 1994 until 2002. During her years as President she always made great efforts to get to the Club Shows and took great pleasure in being asked on occasions to present trophies. For many years she also attended the EELKS Open Show where we used to have 10 classes and super entries, thanks to the hard work of Sue Jones, so that she could present the wonderful array of trophies to the various winners.

In recent years her health had not been too good as a result of which we saw less of her and I am sure there are a good few newer members of the club who perhaps will not have known her that well. To many of us however she was well known and well respected, a lady of the old school.

Gwen had a great love of the phalene and took much delight in the additional interest in the variety that arose over the last few years. She took much pleasure in seeing some of the photos I had been able to obtain from various sources of phalenes on the continent, particularly those in France. Her favourite however was the multi titled Gallinas Prince Noir, whom I was fortunate enough to judge at the Danish Papillon Club Championship Show in the early 1990's and make Best Phalene, and she took much pleasure in seeing the photos I had of him.  Fortunately for the rest of us Gwen found the time to write a book about her life with the Papillon entitled Papillons and Other Friends and what shines through clearly from this is her great love of the breed. For many of us it is a prized asset in our collection of Papillon literature and memorabilia. She will indeed be sadly missed and our condolences go to husband Aubrey and the family.

A note from Helen Wheeler tells me she has taken over as Acting Secretary of the South Wales Papillon Club and all club correspondence etc should be directed to her at 29 Abercarn Close, Bulwell, Nottingham NG6 8JD telephone 0115 975 4339. Helen also tells me the South Wales Club now have their own web site which is at   http://www.southwalespapclub.co.uk

The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club held its AGM in Sunday 2 May and a full report will no doubt appear in the Club Newsletter. Prior to the AGM there was a demonstration of Dance to Music and a number of folk were given the opportunity of taking part. This proved to be very enjoyable for all. The result of the Ballots held was that Jean Lawrence was elected Benevolent Fund Administrator and the Result for the Judges for the 2006 Championship Show means that Jenny Scovell and David Abbott will be judging at this show, Jenny having got the highest number of votes has I understand elected to do bitches..

At the South Tipperary Championship Show BOB & GSD went to Mrs. O. Killeen-King's Penang Goldenleas Rougemist, GSB to Mrs. J. Kilpatrick's Sonsirae Polgara The Sorceress, RGSD to Mr. W. Dillon's Oldcourt Look Terrific and RGSB to Mrs. J. Kilpatrick's Sonsirae Misty Lass

At City of Birmingham it was a first CC for Int Ch Kingshaven Quicksilver Decostalina owned by Mrs L Abeloos -Devos and handled and bred by Jean and Roger Banfield. He is by Ringlands Rupert out of Lordsrake Whispering Dreams At Kingshaven. In bitches again a first CC for Jo Davidson Poston's Spinillons Touch of Heather by Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons Sh CM out of Anncolm Love In A Mist with Spinillons. Reserves went to Nouveau Less is More in dogs, owned and bred by Mark and I and by Tippitoes Lucky Break At Nouveau out of Nouveau Light Up The Sky and in bitches to Sue Victor and Emma McLaughlin's Ch Pinelan Amaryllis by Pinelan Alpine Treasure out of Longcrags Aurelia of Pinelan. Best Puppy was Queenie Bruce and Amanda Bruce Jackson's Macstrak Classic Jazz, bred by Carol Hatch he is by Tijuana Melody Maker out of Macstrak The Diva.

The Club recently obtained some copies of a book entitled Common Medical Disorders of the Papillon from the Papillon Club Of America. The author received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University and is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. He is the author of numerous journal articles and text book chapters on diseases of companion animals. As a breeder/exhibitor and judge of Pekingese he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Pekingese Club of America in 1992 and has been Chair of the club's Health Committee since its inception in 1995 and is a founding director of the Pekingese Charitable Foundation Inc.The Book itself is the combination of a cooperative effort between the PCA and Pekingese Charitable Foundation and is designed to serve as a reference book for all papillon owners whether breeders or pet owners and to help them more fully understand some of the commonly diagnosed conditions in the Papillon. The list of conditions discussed in the book was derived from the past two member health surveys undertaken by the PCA. It has been produced by the Member Education Committee,Papillon Club of America. All the copies we had have been snapped up very quickly and a number of people have asked where they can obtain copies. Whilst these can be got direct from the PCA it would probably be cheaper if we were to arrange a Bulk Order and if anyone would like to purchase a copy please let me know as soon as possible I will arrange a bulk order if sufficient interest is shown. I don't know at the moment what postage we would need to cover for these from the USA but I estimate that if the Club charges £20 to include UK postage that should cover the cost to the club and any excess will go across to Rescue.

Speaking to Paddy afterwards she said that any more dogs and handlers wouldbeen too much for the time scale allowed and a follow up article shall appear in the Newsletter. Any ideas for what to put on next year, please let a committee know so we can start working on and arranging it.  Thanks."

Sorry for the misinformation last week - it was Caswell Classic Tri's second CC not his third!! I am sure that can't be long in coming!!

Dog World

At SKC the Dog CC and BOB went to Claire Butler's Tinklebury Dr No, a first CC I believe for both dog and owner and also for the breeder, Debra Gornall. I am sure both young Claire and Debra must be equally delighted especially as he went on to take Group 3 standing only behind the currently successful Bichon and the Peke. Dr No is by Cheryldene Double Oh Seven, who last week gained his Australian Title.  out of Blairancoes Misses Iffis At Tinklebury. Bitch CC, also her first, went to Sandra Austin and Mrs J Thompson's Jhanakia Highland Breeze by Inixia French Resistance JW out of Pinelan Golden Starlight. Reserves went to Carolyne and David Roe's Sunshoo Imascarlet Oscars (Gleniren Scarlet Monogram out of Austrene Premiere Passion with Sunshoo) in dogs and Caroline Lee Farnsworth's Christea By The Emma Envy, bred by Chris Coffey(Ch Graycaz Green Is Envy out of Christea Chantelle ) in bitches. Emma was also Best Puppy.

Some more good news from the Agility front where Denise Welsh's Harlie The Magnificent continues her winning ways. Having recently reported on her win at Lewes where she beat 138 others dogs to win the Open Agility Class, I hear she recently teamed up with Alison Grimes and her pap Nat (Kazkell Dream Master) at the Tunbridge Wells agility show where together they won the pairs event.

Belated news of the Papillon Club of NSW Show where the Dog CC  and BIS went to Lynne Spooner's Sandrinas Tumbling Dice with the Bitch CC going to Michelle Chipperfield's Aus Ch Burleeds Cherry Tart, Res Dog CC and RBIS was John's Grand Ch Petalouda New Trend and Res Bitch CC Hunt's Kyryndaley Ivory Pearl. BP went to Basilika Bold as Brass

Mark and I had some good news from Marichin Rosenstein in the USA, A few months ago she took back with her a young puppy male and this weekend saw his ring debut where he had two shows. At his first he won his class and took RWD and the following day took Winners Dog and BOW with a three point Major. At just nine months old Marichin was really delighted. The good news was welcome as Mark had had a nasty fall (would you believe chasing a nine week old puppy who had decided to make a bolt for it) he slipped on the wet grass and landed very heavily managing to badly damage his wrist and worse still breaking a couple of ribs.

Show news from Ireland where at the Hibernian & DCC Championship BOB & GSD went to Marion Sloan's  Austrene I'm Electric. GSB to Dolly Kavanagh's Denemore Rainbows Cameo, RGSD to Miss M Clarke's  Austrene Copper Glow and RGSB to  Mrs Pearson's Tedlyn Silver Star.

Our Dogs

What a wonderful entry for Jenny Scovell at the first Open Show of the South of England Papillon Club.  It is 203 dogs making 248 entries - more than most Ch Shows!!  By the time you read these notes the show will be over but I hope to have a full report next week.  I do regret not being able to attend but I still cannot drive and no one lives near enough to give me a lift.  I look forward to hearing all about it.

At SKC Ch Show the American judge Mrs Katona found her BOB and DCC in Miss Butler's Tinklebury Dr No who went Group Three , the RDCC went to the Roe's Sunshoo Imascarlet Oscars.  BCC was Austin & Thompson's Janakia Highland Breeze  with RBCC and Best Puppy going to Caroline Lee-Farnsworth's Christea By The Emma Envy.

The recent Hibernian & DCC Ch show results were sent by Eilish Neally (many thanks) Mrs F Hickey was the judge,  BOB & GSD was Marian Sloan's Austrene I'm Electric - his second major green star,  RGSD was Mrs Clarke's Austrene Copper Glow.  GSB was Dolly Kavanagh's Denemore Rainbows Cameo and RGSB was the Pearsons Tedlyn Silver Star.

Congratulations to the Hancocks whose Shamal Tell Me Another went BOB and Group 4 at Coventry & Dist KA.  Can anybody tell me if this is one of the new Premier shows and if so, do the BOB's qualify for Crufts - or have I got it wrong?

I am so interested to hear that there is an increasing number of Papillon owners who are becoming involved in Dancing with Music and am told that some have already been placed in competitions.  With its grace, beauty and agility the papillon should be a natural at this and I know that Mary Moffat in Scotland has been interested and competed for some time.  Do let me know how you get on and I am quite happy to write information about where training can be obtained in the Notes if it would be helpful and of course to let everyone know of your successes!

I am sorry to have to report that Arthur Houghton (Leevick Papillons) passed away on 24 May. Arthur was quite a colourful character, especially with his waist coats,  with a good sense of humour and enjoyed exchanging jokes. He served for some years as  a Member of the Committee of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club and as Stall Holder. Details of Funeral Arrangements are not known at the time of writing. Our condolences go to Liz and the family at this sad time.

I am sorry I was not able to attend The South of England Papillon Club's first Open Show on 22 May, from all accounts it turned out to be a most enjoyable day. The entry was exceptionally high,  203 dogs making 248 entries, higher than many Championship Shows. BIS went to Jean and Roger Banfield's Amicae Star Charm at Kingshaven with RBIS going to Liz and Alan Bartram's Burghbridge URA Golden Lady and Best Puppy to Carolyne Allward-Chebsey's Lorah's Wild In The Wind. As a mark of appreciation and in recognition of her judging our the Open Show, The South of England Papillon Club offered the judge, Jenny Scovell, an Honorary Life Membership of the Club and were delighted that Jenny accepted.

More success for Denise Welsh and Harlie the Maginificent in the world of agility. At the Eastbourne Agility Show they won their class beating 110 dogs, the winning time being nearly two seconds faster than the rest. I understand there was some strong competition in the class with some good fast dogs of up to15 inches. Harlie also took a creditable 10th place in the junping.  Bearing in mind that Harlie will be 10 years old (yes 10 years) in August this really is an outstanding acheivement for them both. Denise has entered Harlie in the World Agility Championships in July and I am sure we all wish her every success in that.

Our Dogs

I am sorry to tell you that dear Arthur Houghton has passed away in his sleep.  He was an exceptional person, a true gentleman whose kindness and consideration was shown to all his friends.  We were always benched together and many times have we sorted the world out while tucking into his wife Liz's famous cake. Arthur was for some time on the Committee of the Papillon Club but was best known for being the secretary of Merseyside Toy Dog Club.  His Prefix Leevick has been in the winners slot often over the years and recently was to be seen in the Chinese Crested ring where Arthur had become a successful exhibiter and shared my love of these unique little dogs. He had many friends and will be greatly missed.  My condolences go to Liz and his family.

The South of England Papillon Club's First Open Show was a great success and Judge Jenny Scovell had a terriffic entry - over 200- She found her BIS and BD in Jean&Roger Banfield's Amicae Star Charm at Kingshaven with RBIS &BOS going to Alan& Liz Bartram's Burghbridge URA Golden Lady. Best Puppy was Carolyne Allward-Chebsey's Lorah's Wild Is The Wind, Best Veteran was Pearl Peacock's Ch Alcala Ringleader and Best Phalene was Orchards Shamal Firedancer For Panspayon.  6-11 JH was Rebecca Thompson and 12-16 winner was Sophie Langdon. Cash prizes and specials were taken home by the winners and a very enjoyable day was had by all.

In appreciation and in recognition of her judging the First Open Show the Sof E Papillon Club offered  Jenny Scovell an Honorary Life Membership of the Club which she was very pleased to accept.  What a very nice geature that was.

Denise Welsh  and the brilliant Harlie won the Agility Class at Eastbourne Agility Show beating 110 dogs by nearly two seconds!  she is 10 years old in August and is going from strength to strength.  She also came 10th in the Jumping. Denise has entered her for the World Agility Qualifers in July and I know her fans all wish them the best of luck. What a remarkable little dog!
