Don't forget that entries for the Calendar competition for the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club should be in by 30 June at the latest. Just in case there is anyone who does not know about this, the Calendar is a must for most Pap people here in the UK and also attracts interest from folk overseas. All entries sent are placed on display at the Club's Summer Open Show where exhibitors vote for their favourites, the 12 most popular of which appear in the calendar. Over the years there have been some really lovely and amusing pictures included, and some folk have become quite professional with their subjects, so do try to make sure your photograph is clear, sharp and interesting or amusing. Photographs should be no larger than 8" x 6" (panoramic preferably), and should be sent along with the entry fee 50p per photo to Queenie Bruce at Mandrew, Wroot Road, Finningley, Doncaster, DN9 3DR.
Congratulations to Elaine Davidson 31 May on the birth of a son, Kyle, on and of course not forgetting dad Martin. Both mother and baby are doing well.
At Bath Championship Show Sean Carroll was awarding CC's I believe for the first time here and found his Dog CC and BOB in Sue Stanbury's Inixia Troysdale Time Traveller. A first CC for him, he is by Inixia Dream Time out of Inixia Jack's Joy at Troysdale and was bred by Mr & Mrs F Bristow. In bitches it was a first CC also for Norma Staff and Pat Munn's home bred Ringlands Disco Dancer At Shamal (by Int Ch Ringlands Disco Dan out of Ringlands Mary Mary. A good day for Norma and Pat as they also took the Reserve Dog CC with Ch Ringlands Hologram (Eng & Jap Ch Ringlands Copyright ex Ringlands Sandys Girl) with the Reserve Bitch CC going to Jean and Roger Banfield's Farleysbane Unsung Melody At Kingshaven, bred by Sue Victor and Emma McLaughlin and by Amicae Rudi Bare out of Lordsrake Whispering Dreams at Kingshaven. Best Puppy was Jimmy Simpson's Penang Faberge

I recieved the Schedule for the N&E Cos Papillon Club Open Show on 18th July at Thorpe Willoughby Hall Nr Selby with Martin Freeman judging Dogs and Sruart Mallard the Bitches. Entries close on 21st June.
This is the show when those attending vote on the entries for the Calendar Competition and if you wish to enter a photograph it should be no bigger than 6"x8", the cost of entering is 50pence each and they should be accompanied by a sae for them to be returned to you. Entries should be sent to Mrs Queenie Bruce, Mandrew, 67 Wroot Road, Finningley Doncaster DN9 3DR. Remember that Papillons taking part in activities and getting up to no good - like the gorgeous puppy with the goose in this year's May picture - are more likely to win than carefully posed show pictures. so get snapping as the closing date is 10th July.
Congratulations to Elaine and Martin Davidson who became new parents with the birth of a son Kyle, 6lbs 15ozs, on 31st May ( my daughter Nicola's birthday!). Another Junior Handler from North of the Border! |

At Southern Counties the Dog CC and BOB went to Linda Sohn and K Ozeki's Am Ch Cadaga's Civil Action. This was his third CC thus giving him his UK title subject to KC confirmation. Civil Action went on to take Group 3. By Am Ch Loteki Supernatural Being out of Clearlake Prima at Cadaga, he is the first overseas papillon campaigned here to obtain his title. Bitch CC went to Kingshaven Truly Scrummy For Bodebi owned by Messrs J W & G Turner and bred by Jean and Roger Banfield. I believe this is her first CC and the first CC in the breed for her owners. Reserves went to Jenny Scovell's Caswell Classic Tri in dogs and Michelle Osborn's Bonifee Lady Penelope of Tykkydewas in bitches. Best Puppy was Eileen Roberts' Rayol Aristotles
At the Papillon Club of Ireland Championship Show Bitch Green Star and BIS went to Jo Davidson Poston's Spinillons A Touch of Hope and Jo also too the Dog GS with Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons Sh CM (this win gives him his Irish Title subject to KC confirmation) Reserve Bitch Green Star was Diane Mooney's Omaonaig Flame of Triad and Reserve Dog Green Star went to Mrs. Killeen-King's Penang Goldenleas Rougemist at Doleissimo. Best Puppy was Mrs. Belshaw's Belvisaj Simply Chic. The Show was held on the same day as the Irish Toy Dog Society Championship Show the results of which were Bitch Green Star and BOB went to Spinillons a Touch of Hope, Dog Green Star to Marion Sloan's Austrene Copper Glow, Reserve Bitch Green Star to Diane Mooney's Omaonaig Flame of Triad and Reserve Dog Green Star to Mr Dillon's Oldcourt El Greco. BP was Mrs. Belshaw's Belvisaj Simply Charming. At the Munster Canine Association Championship Show where there was apparently only 1 Green Star on offer for the Breed, BOB & GSD/B went to Dolly Kavanagh's Serenglade Gold Sovereign with RGSD/B going top Diane Mooney's Omaonaig Fame of Maro.
I was very pleased to here from Anthos of the King Pygmalion Papillons in Cyprus of a super win he had recently, many will remember Anthos attended the recent Club Championship Show. At an all Breed Championship Show in Cyprus last month a five year old papillon bred by Anthos and owned by a friend of his not only took the breed and went Group 1 but ended up BIS, the first ever such win on the Island for a Papillon. Anthos was delighted naturally, the more so as Queenie Bruce who is currently on holiday there was at the show to see this.
Phil Shirley, Secretary of the South of England Papillon Club writes " This years Funday / Garden Party of the South of England Papillon Club will take place on the Sunday 22nd August, unfortunately Chieveley is not available for us this year as they are doing some improvements there so we have a new venue at Bradfield Village hall between Reading and Newbury just off the M4 J12. We have plenty of events happening including the very popular Mini Agility Demonstration along with the reduced course to "have a go" , also this year you will be able to have your dog tested for the KC Good Citizen Bronze Award, so try to go to local training classes prior to the event and then come along and take the test. There will be plenty of fun classes , sausage races, fancy dress, good food and refreshments, it was great fun last year. Members will receive full details in their next news sheet.
Congratulations to Karen Anderson (who of course shares the Northlyte prefix with mum Liz) on her marriage on 5 June to Jim O'Kane. The wedding took place in the Memorial Chapel, Glasgow University, Glasgow which was apparently an absolutely stunning backdrop. I am told the bride looked beautiful and the groom handsome, as it should be. I am sure we all wish them a long and happy future together.
I must again mention that Dog World's policy for printing Breed Results of Open Shows is that usually only the BOB will be reported, and this includes Breed Club Open Shows. In my report of the South of England Papillon Club Open Show I can assure everyone I sent in a full report giving details of all principal winners, nonetheless this was edited out to include just the BOB. I have mentioned this policy several times in the past 12 months or so, so am a little surprised to hear comments being made by some who were aware of this policy to the effect that I did not for some reason or other send in a full report. If you are not happy with it write to Dog World, don't blame me!!!!!

At Munster CA Ch Show judged by Anne Fitzpatrick there was only one Green star on offer and it went to Dolly Kavanagh's Serenglade Gold Sovereign with the RGS going to Mooney's Omaonaig Fame of Maro I think Best Puppy was Shanahan's Oldcourt Moments of Magic.
Liz Houghton would like to thank all the many people who sent condolences on Arthur's sudden death. She says that she was quite overwhelmed and touched by the affection and support she and the family received. Arthur will be greatly missed by all his friends
I am pleased to tell you that Karen Anderson who shares the Northlyte Affix with mum Liz ( I hope you had the Derby Winner!!) has just been married to Jim O'Kane in the Memorial Chapel Glasgow University which must have been a lovely setting for the wedding, Good Luck in the future!!
Papillon Club member Marian Burford is to accompany her father who landed on the D Day beaches 60 years ago, on a government sponsored visit to Normandy in July as part of the D Day Remembrance scheme. Quite an experience
.
Anne Richardson writes that Calendar Competition entries must be with Queenie Bruce by 10th July so that she has time to mount them before the show. |

I was very pleased to get a telephone call from Liz Houghton and to learn that she was coping well following Arthur's passing. Although taking one day at a time she has had the support of the family around her and has also taken much comfort from the great many cards and flowers she has received from Papillon folk. She has asked me to pass on her thanks to everyone for the kindness they have shown. Hopefully Liz's friends will be able to persuade her not to stay away from the show ring for too long, in fact she may make Three Counties if not hopefully we will all see her at Blackpool.
Arthur's funeral was held on 2 June and Irene Robb has been kind enough to send the following information. On a bright sunny day Arthur Houghton said his last goodbye to family and friends at Thornton Crematorium, Merseyside on the 2nd June. People from many walks of life filled the chapel to capacity. Many friends
from the dog world attended, both Papillon and many other breeds represented. The curate knew Arthur and Liz from the children's school days so he himself had a lovely insight to the character we all had known as Arthur. This was a celebration of a life, at times bringing a smile of humour remembering memories that came to mind and yet so humble, a service of which I am sure Arthur would have approved. A reception at Dominic Browne and Terry Burgess home afterwards was very well received and beautifully put together.
Arthur and Liz first introduction to Papillons was at Merseyside Toy Dog in the 70's. It was love at first sight. They bought their first Papillon in 1981, Pinelan Princess Natanya of Zabeth from Mrs E Carr. Breeding their first Leevick Papillon in 1986, Leevick June Rose followed by Leevick Hamilton Taylor, which many people will remember. Many more followed including Robson Green and lastly Moondust. Arthur judged all over the UK. He considered it an honour to judge the Northern and Eastern and South Wales breed shows. He was invited to judge Border Union with tickets but Foot and Mouth cancelled the show. Finally at Richmond last year he awarded tickets for the Papillons. This was a great thrill and one Liz watched and will cherish. For the last year Arthur showed a Powderpuff with success in partnership with Linda Biss however he always took time to visit his friends at the Papillon ring and bantered a joke or two.A larger than life character that will be missed on the show scene by so many.
Carolyne Allward Chebsey has asked me remind everyone that articles and copy for the inclusion for the next issue of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Newsletter is required by the end of June month at the latest. If you have anything you want to put in, please let Carolyne have it as soon as possible but no later than this date.

Dick Terry was the judge at Three Cos Ch Show and his DCC and BOB was the Roe's Sunshoo Imascarlet Oscars with RDCC going to Kay Stewart's Tamaru Amore's Parel At Tussalud. BCC was Liz and Alan Bartram's Burghbridge URA golden Lady. I have no knowledge of the RBCC as the name given on the printers site is obviously incorrect being James' Benvellen Namaqua Dove which is not a Papillon and does not feature in the placings. I will let you know as soon as I find out who it was, Best Puppy was Sue Stanbury's Cofton Flite Of Fancy
Irene Robb has sent me the following account of Arthur Houghton's funeral which she attended and also some details of his life, " On a bright sunny day Arthur Houghton said his last goodbye to family and friends at Thornton Crematorium, Merseyside on 2nd June. Schedules for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Open Show on Sunday 5 September should now be available. These will be sent to those who have exhibited at any of the Club;'s last three shows or can be obtained from Carolyne Allward Chebsey ((tel: 01543 256394, or write to request one, 44 Gilbert Road, Lichfield, Staffs. WS13 6AX) Alternatively anyone with Internet access can print one up from the Club's web site at http://www.papillonclub.co.uk where full instructions on what to do will be given The judges for this Show are Don Mahoney of the well known Mondelise Papillons in Australia who will be judging the Breed Classes and his wife Sharon will be judging the Junior Handling and Welfare and Benevolent Fund Classes. As Don and Sharon will be staying with Mark and I needles to say we won't be entering the show. Don has judged the breed many times in Australia and elsewhere at Championship Show level sp clearly has a lot f experience in the Breed. In the past it has been evident that judges from Overseas pull in a good entry, presumably because they bring a fresh eye to the breed, so I do hope everyone will give them a bumper entry.
The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club is organising a series of Seminars with aim of helping prospective Judges fulfil the criteria needed to move up the Judging Lists. The first one to take place, which will be held on 18th September at Bury St Edmunds is the latest 'Hands On Assessment' now required by the Kennel Club and the assessor will be Mr S Bardwell. Unfortunately all places have already been taken but it is hoped to run another sometime in November. Places will be limited so anyone interested should contact Doug Colyer (01394 450782) now. The Club is also planning to run a 'Rules and Regulations' again to be held in Bury St Edmunds sometime in October, again contact Doug Colyer to for further details. As soon as I can get full details of dates etc I will publish these and will also have details put up on the Club's web site.
News from Ireland where at the Swords & DCC championship show BOB & GSD went to Dolly Kavanagh's Serenglade Gold Sovereign, with GSB going to Dolly's Denemore Rainbows Cameo, RGSD was Mrs. M. Gohery's Snoopy Nickey Lad and from the Puppy Class RGSB Marion Sloan's Austrene Walk of Fame.

I believe this is Jo's first champion in the breed so many congratulations to her. Touch of Hope is by Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons Sh CM out of Anncolm Love In A Mist at Spinillons. Dog CC went to Joan Savage's home bred Abbeyton Silver Rain Sh CM, his first CC he is by Northlyte Silver Dream out of Chappell's Peaches 'N Cream. Last Year Silver Rain took BIS at both the Scottish Papillon Club Open Show and the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Open Show. Reserves went to Ms Waters' Glasafon Jiggery Poke With Sempefidelis, bred by Jean Leverett and by Glasafon Successor out of Glasafon Lynbank Bizzie Lizzie in dogs and in bitches to Queenie Bruce and Amanda Bruce Jackson's home bred Tijuana Georgio who is by Tutyak Midnight Magic out of Tijuana Ch Cha. Best Puppy was Mrs Kirk's Kirkdale Razzle Dazzle by Serenglade Zeus out of Kirkchase Bedazzled.
Phil Shirley went over to the Clepnaco Winner Show in Belgium (the Belgian Papillon Club) and tells me that the journey was really quite easy, probably easier for him than Manchester!!! Phil says it was a most enjoyable show with an entry of 52, and during a break of about 90 minutes at lunch time a fabulous bar-b-que was cooked. As well as Phil from the UK there were exhibitors from Holland. All in all it was it seems a very enjoyable trip and Phil is seriously thinking about perhaps organising a trip to the show next year from the UK so if anyone is interested it might be an idea to let Phil know so he can get an idea of numbers. BD and BIS went to Eng Ch Genevieves Flirtie Birtie now owned by Mrs Abeloos-Devos and BB to Phil's Ch Cordonrouge Ciara JW
Phil has also sent me to following dates for events being organised by the SOuth of England Papillon Club 22nd August 2004 Fun day, 21st November 2004 Breed Seminar with KC Rules and Regs, 18th December Christmas Party / Match 2004, 21st May 2005 (provisional date) Open Show.
Some success for the Breed at Open Shows recently. At the Southampton & DCS Two Day Open Show Margaret Unwin had a super day when she took BOB, Toy Group and RBIS with Inixia Dream Magic, owned jointly with Sue Stanbury, and handled by Margaret. As well as three lovely cups Margaret tells me she also came away with some Prize Money!!
At the Newmarket &DCS Open Show, Steve and Karen Maskell's Kazkell Dillon's Dream continued his recent run of success by taking BOB and the Toy Group.

Vandy Williams was the judge at Border Union and she awarded BOB and BCC to Jo Davidson-Poston's Spinillons A Touch Of Hope, this was her 3rd CC so congratulations !! Best Poppy was Kirk's Kirkchase Razzle Dazzle
The RBCC at Three Cos Ch was Sandra Austin & daughter Jane's Janakia Highland Breeze JW I did contact the Canine Information Directory to correct their report but do not know if they did so, anyway the record is straight now.
At Swords & DCC Ch Show where Ann Horan was the Judge BOB & GSD was Dolly Kavanagh's Serenglade Gold Sovereign with RGSD going to Gohery's Snoopy Nicky Lad GSB was Dolly's Denemore Rainbows Cameo , RGSB was Marian Soan's Austrene Walk Of Fame who was also Best Puppy.
At Southampton & Dist two day Show Margaret Unwin and Sue Stanbury's Inixia Dreams Magic won RBIS.
Debbie Deuchar's young dog Dime( Ringlands Golden Dollar) has taken and passed his Gold Good Citizen Test - he is only 17 months old and Debbie's older Pap Gilby(Shamal Sequel) will have to look to his laurels!!
Philip Shirley took JoJo , his Ch Cordonrouge Ciara to Belgium to compete at the Clepnaco( Belgian Papillon Club )Show, similar to our Club's Open Shows. Jo Jo won Best Bitch and Ch Genevieves Flirtie Bertie won BIS. Phil said it was a most enjoyable day and is seriously thinking of organising a trip next year.
Carolyne Allward-Chebsey has asked me to print the following; " Schedules for the Papillon(Butterfly Dog) Club's Open Show on September 5th will be available shoetly and will be posted to all those folk who have exhibited at any of the Club's last three Shows. A Copy( together with an entry form) can now be printed up from the Club's web site at http://.papillonclub.co.uk just follow the link appearing on the web site for further instructions. Alternatively contact Carolyne Allward-Chebsey at Carolyne@lorahspaps.co.uk or Tel; 01543 256394 or write to request one at 44 Gilbert Rd Lichfield Staffs WS13 6AX and a schedule will be sent to you when they are available. The Judge of this show is of course Don Mahoney of the well known Mondelise Papillons in Australia and Don's wife Sharon will be judging the Junior Handling, Welfare and Benevolent Classes. Don has judged the breed numerous times both in Australia and elsewhere but this is the first time he has judged here in the UK. As Don and Sharon will be staying with Mark Billinghurst and Mike Foster, they will obviously, not be entering under them. In the past our Overseas judges have always attracted a good entry. possibly because they bring a fresh eye to the breed here and of course know very few people. Hopefully everyone will give them a bumper entry.
