Dog World
The Secretary of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club, Carolyne Allward-Chebsey,writes "The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's first Christmas Cracker Day held on 4 December was a huge success with many people and papillons (and phalene) coming along and joining in the fun. Our Judge for the day Mrs Irene Horner helped create the atmosphere 'good will towards all men' with her jovial attitude to all although she admitted she was floored when she had to pick one out for the Best in Show Cracker Day, which was judged on the one she wanted to take home, she said 'all of them'! This was eventually won, after whittling down the dogs, by a young handler Miss Gomez who went home rather richer than she came, with prizes and money. (Her mother also won one of the 'fivers' that was in the crackers!............I add that originally we had one donation for the 'spiked' cracker, but on the day, found out that we had kindly had another, making two 'spiked' crackers) I think the most popular 'class' was retrieve the sausage, with some paps being so expert at it that they got the sausage before the class had started. They got double rations for their efforts. The fancy dress class was won by a darling phalene dressed up as Robin Hood. One popular item was the giving out of 'on the spot' photographs, which had been taken randomly, and of the winners in each class, this seemed to be very popular and thanks must go to Eileen who generously supplied the 'polaroid' film. Father Christmas was in attendance and all the children present went home laden with a large goody bag. The food spread that was put on was free to all and received many favourable comments . All in all a good day was had.  There will be a write up in the next issue of the Newsletter with photo's for those unable to attend so they can see what they missed. Next year's event is now being talked about and the planning of it has started. We intend having the same date next year and that will be confirmed early next year for you all to put in your diaries. Our thanks to all who attended, donated, and helped out."   The Papillon Club of Scotland had a very good entry for their Open Show where Josie Mann travelled up to judge. Josie tells me the setting of the venue was absolutely glorious with the mountains in the background and that the show was very enjoyable indeed. BIS went to Queenie Bruce with Tijuana Georgiou which I am told Queenie managed quite well with despite her broken shoulder. I must also mention the BPIS in show which I hope Dog World will allow as an exceptional matter as it was the dog's very first show at the tender age of just 6 months old, being Elizabeth Patrick's Volpecula Vanity's Mirror. Not surprising that Josie went for this young man as he is very similar to his half sister, Josie's Bonifee Lady Marion who is now in the USA with Renee Pillee and who recently had her own successful debut in the show ring over there taking Reserve Winner's Bitch at her first show and WB and BOW at her second show the following day.   Another youngster doing well in the USA is Kilan Contessa Lady in Red, bred by Christine and now owned by Marion and Hunter De Carlo. At the San Mateo Kennel Club show she too took RWB on day one to be followed by WB and BOS the following day
I was very sorry to hear that Elsie Old had passed away, she was 92 years old. Elsie and her late husband Stanley held the Ysyswyn prefix and probably many of today's newer exhibitors will not have known her. When Mark and I first came into the breed they were indeed very active in it, Stanley was then Vice Chairman of the Club, a position he held from 1968 to 1979, and both were regularly seen around the ring side and at Club events.  One of Elsie's dogs, Ysyswyn Sweet William sired the well known Cronberry Sergent Major who in turn sired Ch Arval Theodore (sire of a number of champions including Ellis Hulme's first two champions Oakridges Petit Maurice and the famous Pierre Of Oakridges). Sergent Major also sired Norma Staff's Ringlands Stylish Maiden, dam of Ch Gerlil Rhett Butler. Some of us will remember the awful event when they suffered a gas explosion and Stanley was very badly injured. One of the young papillons they had at the time, Fircrest Forest Faun, could not be found and it was feared he had perished in the explosion, he was found some eight days later in the debris under I believe an upturned bath suffering extremely badly from dehydration and other injuries. After much careful nursing he recovered and indeed a couple of years later won a first at the Club Championship Show much to everyone's delight. Both Elsie and Stanley were keen supporters of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club and it is sad that like many before them, and no doubt many that will come after, as the years go by their contributions are often forgotten. Our condolences go Elsie's daughter and the family at this sad time.

Another of the early Papillon Breeders has died and one who was a very good friend of mine.  Elsie Old of the Ynyswyn Papillons has passed away in the Nursing home where she spent the last years of her life, she was 92 yrs old. She is survived by her son and daughter Felicity.  I first met Elsie and her husband Stanley when I lived in Devon and had my first Papillon as well as my Standard Poodles.  Elsie told me that I was very welcome to break my journeys North at their home in Abingdon and I was welcome to come for breakfast which was their main meal!!  And what a meal it was!! - The males of the household Stanley and his son worked overnights at Morris Cowley and Felicity and Elsie were daytime workers so Breakfast was the only meal they all shared and Elsie made it a real banquet. I was happy to share it on more than one occasion.  I always found Elsie 's advice good and she was such a fair minded person - a day spent with Elsie and Stanley was always a delight

They owned the famous sire Baluch Wee Willie Winkie who had been stolen as a young dog and injured when he was thrown over a garden wall , despite that he won the Stud Dog Trophy and sired many outstanding dogs including Ch Ynyswn Josephine and Ch Wildwings Storm Petrel who was three times BOB at Crufts and with no Blaze.    In the 80s Elsie returned home with a friend to find that their road was closed as there had been a gas explosion and was horrified th find it was their home. Stanley had been in his workshop in the Garage and only sustained a head injury but the dogs and Elsie's beloved cats were lost except that days later their winning Fircrest Forest Faune was dug out of the rubble and in time Elsie showed her and won again with her

Stanley was Vice Chairman of the Papillon Club from 1968 to 1979 and they both were great supporters of the Club and took a big part in the lovely Garden parties that we had then,  my son Evan followed Stanley around at these "helping" as he liked to think.  I remember them both with great affection and send condolences go to Felicity and her brother. Elsie will be cremated at Oxford Crematorium on Monday 13th at 1.45 pm and no flowers are requested but donations to the Red Cross can be sent to Mrs Felicity Pine, 10 Waterside Park, Portishead N Somerset BS20 8LL

The Papillon Club of Scotland Open Show was judged by Josie Mann and her BIS and BB was Queenie Bruce's Tijuana Georgio with RBIS and BD going to Jeanette MacKay's Jaylanjay Amastunner,  RBD was Queenie and Amanda's Tijuana Melody Maker and RBB was Elizabeth Patrick's Volpecula Decibelle, Elizabeth's Volpecula Vanity Mirror was B Puppy and Best Veteran was Macgregor's Pyatshaw White Heat

South Western Toy Dog Club at the new venue of The Wellsprings Leisure Centre Taunton is having 8 Papillon Classes at its Open Show on 15th May 2005 with Judge Douglas Colyer These Classes are sponsored by The Papillon Club

My thanks to Carolyn Allward-Chebsey for the following report on the Papillon Club recent Christmas Cracker Day:

At LKA Dog CC and BOB went to Jenny Scovell's recently crowned Ch Caswell Classic Tri ( Caswell Copper Charmer out of Ch Caswell Coppatina) with the bitch CC also going to a newly crowned champion being Rosemary Ayris Ch Ibstock Adorable at Tussalud (Ch Ibstock Mark of Distinction out of Tussalud Miss Terriebelle). Reserves went in dogs to Caroline Lee Farnsworth's Graycaz Take The Michael (Ch Graycaz Green Is Envy out of Amicae Quazy Bare ) and in bitches to Ann Borg's Elendil Amaryllis whose breeding I am afraid I do not have to hand at the moment. Best puppy was Mr & Mrs Fitch's Graycaz All That Glitters of Gladwill (Graycaz In The Red out of Ch Graycaz Blissful Thinking) who was also Best Puppy.

I am sorry for the brevity of the notes this week but unfortunately Mark and I were involved in a car accident on Sunday and at the moment sitting at the computer is somewhat painful. Fortunately the only injuries we suffered appear to be whiplash to the neck and shoulders and in Mark's case he also appears to have cracked again one of the ribs he broke a little while ago, possibly from the seat belt. The car however is a total write off, looking at it before the ambulance took us off it's seems impossible we escaped with so few injuries, thanks I am sure due to seat belts, head rests and air bags. One never knows what is round the corner, in this case it was another car which lost control coming round a bend and skidded into our lane and straight into the front of us, it happened so quickly there was hardly time to react although judging from the final position of the cars it does seem I did manage to brake and the car remained more or less where it should have been. At the moment we are both feeling rather bruised and battered but thankfully nothing worse and thankfully no dogs in the car. One piece of good news we had was hearing from Anthos in Cyprus who was delighted to tell us that at his third show Nouveau Island Icon had taken his third CC thus giving him his Cyprus Title.

This will be the last Dog World before Christmas so I wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a peaceful and safe New Year
Our Dogs
At LKA Joanna Green, judging a bumper entry, found her DCC and BOB in Jenny Scovell's Ch Caswell Classic Tri with RDCC going to Caroline Lee-Farnsworth & C Brookfield's Graycaz Take The Michael.  BCC was Rosemary & David Ayris' Ch Ibstock Adorable At Tussalud and RBCC was the Borg's Elendil Amaryllis.  B Puppy went to Mr & Mrs Fitch's Graycaz All That Glitters of Gladwill.

Mark and Mike of the Nouveau Papillons were involved in a nasty car accident which wrote off their car. Fortunately, they sufferred no serious injury but were left badly bruised and scratched and with whiplash. It was caused when a car coming towards them suddenly skidded into them head on.  I hope that their aches and pains will be better soon so that they can enjoy Christmas.

Jo Davidson-Poston and Zebedee( Ir Ch Ibstock Bright Spark of Spinillons) were Runner Up in the Pro Dogs Champions Final As this is probably the last time for this competition Jo who has always supported the Charity was delighted to add this to Zebedee's many awards.

Rosemary Hobson from Morecambe had a good day out at Dean Open Show when her Briber Midsummer Dream of Rosenjon won Toy Group 1

Bubbles Wood-Davis, Anne Borg and Joyce Dunn attended Elsie Old's funeral on the 13th so the Club was well represented.

My Very Best Wishes for a Very Merry Christmas and A Happy Prosperous and Winning New Year to you All and don't forget to let me have all your news in 2005!!

Dog World

The Christmas issue of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Newsletter is now out and all members should by now have received their copy. Included in this is the Preliminary Notice of the AGM, there are a number of vacancies for Committee so let's hope we see a few more names going forward. Perhaps some of those who often seem willing to complain if something is not to their liking or want to see the Club put other things on will be willing to let their names go forward and take a share in some of the work???? And a reminder that subscriptions for the year fall due on 1 January so do try and make an effort to send these as soon as possible to the Treasurer Doug Colyer. I know when I was Treasurer I did appreciate those folk who sent their subs off early it makes the job that little bit easier,

I will shortly as usual give a list of all CC and Reserve CC winners over the year, I am afraid this will have to wait until the shoulders and neck are less painful, meantime I must congratulate Jo Davidson Poston who has had a really outstandingly successful year in 2004. As well as having made up the two litter sisters Ch Spinillons Touch of Hope and Ch Spinillons Touch of Heather, Jo, thanks to the success of these two girls, also takes the Dog World Award for Top Breeder, Top Stud (Ir Ch Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons Sh CM) and Top Brood Bitch (Anncolm Love In A Mist With Spinillons). Quite an achievement, the more so because as I am sure Jo herself would be the first to admit, unlike some kennels she does not breed a lot of litters (quality is always preferable to quantity, look at these two girls' pedigrees, a lesson if one were needed that get the pedigree right and the quality will come through) and of course Jo herself has had her share of illness during the last 12 months or so. To round off such a super year Jo's Ir Ch Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons Sh CM took the Runner Up spot in the Pro Dogs Stakes Finals for the year.

Winners of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Trophies for 2004 are as follows:- The Shimna Trophy for Top Dog goes to Ch. Caswell Classic Tri, The Elendil Trophy for Top Bitch is shared jointly by Ch.Serenglade Enchanted Lady For Temelora, Ch.Spinillons A Touch Of Hope and Ch.Spinillons Touch Of Heather; The Ringlands Trophy for Top Papillon Ch Caswell Classic Tri; The Graycaz Trophy for the Top Ch Show Class Winning Papillon - Gleniren Scarlet Signature; The Kuruso Trophy for Best Puppy - Gleniren Scarlet Signature; The Monamie Trophy for Top Owner -Inixia, The Joan Brown Rose Bowl for Top Breeder - Gleniren; The Greenhedges Trophy & The Brood Bitch and Progeny Cup for Top Brood Bitch Sunshoo Imascarlet Erika At Gleniren; The Miss Taylor Stud Dog Trophy & The Charthamcoombe Tristam Trophy for Top Stud Dog Ch. Graycaz Green Is Envy .

Many thanks to all those folk who sent e-mails and cards following our accident. We are both still feeling very sore and stiff especially around the neck and shoulders but hopefully his will begin to wear off before too long.

A Happy New Year to you all

If I've got my dates right these notes should appear after Christmas so I hope you have all had a very good time and are not too full of Christmas goodies.  We will soon be starting out on a New Year and may I remind everyone that it is nearly time to renew your Club subscriptions which come due in January.

It will soon be AGM time and I have the date for the South Of England Club AGM which will be held at Bradfield Village Hall Nr Newbury Berks on 17th April 2005 at 3pm. This was a most successful event last year raising more than £2000 for Macmillan Nurses.  I do not know which Charity will be the recipient this time but will let you know in due course. A Happy New Year to all.
