Breed Notes for January 2005

At the Dublin Dog Show GSB & BOB went to Diane Mooney's Omaonaig Flame Of Tara, RGSB to Diane's Omaonaig Fairy Footstep, GSD to Clarke's Austrene Copper Glow, RGSD to Madigan's Oldcourt Sir Harry.

The South of England Papillon Club's Christmas Party was very successful, the Christmas Lunch was followed by a match with a visit from Father Christmas. I understand the Club now has available a number of items such as T-shirts, sweatshirts etc incorporating the Club's logo and further details can be obtained from Brian Cox on 023 80871507.

Sue Stanbury writes "I would like on behalf of the S Wales Papillon Club to remind all those lucky people that have won CC, BOB, BPIB, BVIB at any Ch Shows or BIS, RBIS, BPIS or BVIS at Limit or Open Breed Shows that we will be placing a 3 generation pedigree of those winners in this year's edition. in order to be accurate I would love to have a copy of their pedigree, plus it will cost £10 (cheques made payable to the S Wales papillon Club) if you would like to add a photo of the winning dog to be placed on the page with the pedigree.

Also this year (free of charge), we will be including data of all Papillons that have been Veterinary tested clear of Patella Luxation this year. They have to be over 12 months of age and I would like a copy of the veterinary Certificate. Not surprisingly there is not a lot of news around at the moment so if you do have any please let me know. Mark and I would like to thank those folk who sent cards etc following our recent car accident, it is much appreciated. I am afraid we are still suffering from injuries to the neck and shoulders and Mark possibly has a trapped nerve in his arm, we are both hoping these will subside soon preferably before the painkillers run out!!!!

My thanks to Sue Victor for reminding me that Clare Butler and her pap Tinklebury Dr No will be flying the pap flag high for us all at the forthcoming Pedigree Finals. Clare won the semi of the annual JHA competition at Richmond and will now be competing at the National Final at the NEC on Sat 29 January. For junior handlers, this is like the FA Cup Final! Pap kids have a pretty fierce reputation for doing well in this competition over the years. I am sure we all wish Clare the best of luck.

My thanks to Phil Shirley for the following interesting facts regarding last years results. There were of course 30 sets of CC's on offer last year, 4 Breed Shows, 25 All Breeds shows and one Toy Group Show, which were awarded by 33 judges (UK Toys, The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club and the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club shows each having a judge for each sex). Of the 30 BOB's 22 went to 13 dogs and the remaining 8 to 7 bitches, 18 dogs and 14 bitches won CC's, 21 dogs and 24 bitches won Reserve CC's. The 30 BP awards went to 21 different puppies, bitches accounted for 19 of these 30 BP awards and dogs 11. Ten new champions were made up, 5 of each sex, 4 of which were breed overseas (1 Estonia,1 USA & 2 Ireland)

As with last year the number of dogs and bitches winning CC's and Reserve CC's is quite high, last year 20 dogs won CC's, 20 won Reserve CC's, 15 bitches won CC's and 20 won Reserve CC's coincidentally last year also saw 10 new champions gaining their titles, 7 bitches and 3 dogs. It will be interesting to compare these results with other breeds, whose results will no doubt be reported in their respective Breed Notes, to see whether such a spread is something evidenced in many other breeds. Of course there can be a number of reasons, some dogs have not been campaigned perhaps as heavily as others, some of course have had to come from overseas which has surely curtailed their chances of gaining more CC's, and perhaps the spread is also indicative of other reasons, perhaps a wide variance in judges opinions. Whilst of course the standard is open to interpretation (and thank goodness otherwise the same dogs would always win) there must be a point where one starts to wonder whether such a spread means either the standard of the breed is so high (in which case one would wonder why Group Results this year have not been better) or the standard of judging is not as good as it should be.

Sorry to say that one of my notes went astray at Christmas so I am repeating some of the news from them!

Jo Davidson-Poston and Zebedee( Ir Ch Ibstock Bright Spark of Spinillons) were Runner Up in the Pro Dogs Champions Final at LKA As this is probably the last time for this competition Jo who has always supported the Charity was delighted to add this to Zebedee's many awards.

Rosemary Hobson from Morecambe had a good day out at Dean Open Show when her Briber Midsummer Dream of Rosenjon won Toy Group 1

Bubbles Wood-Davis, Anne Borg and Joyce Dunn attended Elsie Old's funeral on the 13th December so the Club was well represented.

Congratulations to Claire Butler and Murphy(Tinklebury Dr No) who qualified for the 12-16 National JHA Finals to be held at the NEC on Saturday 29th January. Claire is only 12 and it is a great achievement for her to reach this position. I know she will have many people wishing her success. Win or loose she should be very proud of her achievement Good Luck Claire!

Two lots of congratulations to start of the notes this week. Firstly to Irene Waters who recently got married over in California and secondly to Terry and Nigel (Lysandra Papillons) who recently got engaged. Congratulations to both couples.

I was pleased to hear just after Christmas from Joanna and Malcolm Green and interested to hear Joanna's views on the breed following her appointment at LKA. Joanna and Malcolm were particularly delighted with the bowl of pink and blue hyacinths they received from the Club and have asked me to express their thanks. Joanna is running on a young bitch puppy which show promise so is quite excited at the prospect of getting back into the ring again.

Some news from the Kennel Club, the General Committee has recently commenced a review of the system for allocating breeds to Stud Book Bands, since the previous method has made use of standard absentee percentage figures that were set as long ago as 1993. These absentee percentage figures have changed considerably since this time, with some breed absentees at shows increasing, and others decreasing. As the review may well result in a significant number of one-off changes, it has been agreed that no such changes will be made for 2005 and that Stud Book Bands for that year will remain as in 2004. This will enable greater notice to be given of the new Bands when these are agreed for 2006, and these are likely to be announced in mid January.

It seems to me very sensible, we all know that sometimes there is a quite high absentee rate and it seems logical that awards should be based on current figures. It will be interesting to see what difference if any this makes as far as our breed is concerned.

Whilst there is not a lot of news around at the present it gives me space to mention an item of interest. On one of the lists on the Internet there has been some discussion regarding size in particular with regard to what is acceptable within the various standards. As far as I am aware there are four standards currently in use, our own, the USA Standard, the FCI Standard and the Australian Standard (which is based on the pre 1987 UK Standard). Both our own and the Australian standard give size as 8 -11 inches. The USA Standard whilst also giving 8-11 inches qualifies this further on in the standard by stating over 12 inches is a disqualification. The FCI Standard however gives height as "about 28 cm." (11 inches = 27.94 cm) and of course the FCI Standard also has two weight categories of '1) Less than 2,5 kg for dogs and bitches. 2) From 2,5 kg to 4,5 kg for dogs, from 2,5 kg to 5 kg for bitches. Minimum weight 1,5 kg.' What seems rather strange is that there is no minimum height requirement. I understand from discussions with well known and successful breeders on the continent that the FCI Standard was changed in 1990 from a maximum of 28 cms. No one seems to know why it was changed or on whose request but there appears, in my view justifiably, to be some concern now as to the current wording given that it allows for taller and taller papillons to be successful (after all what exactly does 'about 28cms mean). It does seem that the Belgian and French Clubs (the two countries of origin??) are unhappy with the current wording yet as I say no one seems to know why it was changed. Size is but one aspect of how it seems that breeders and exhibitors in different countries have different views. From what I gather for example in the USA they prefer a more medium sized papillon, parts of Scandinavia appear to go for a taller papillon, over here we seem to have a mixture. Sometimes even a medium sized papillon here can look small in the ring when compared to others. One of the reasons I find the differences in the various standards interesting is because these days more and more papillons are travelling to compete in other countries against standards which have some interesting differences (just look at the difference in the standards for eyes) so I sometimes wonder how a successful dog here manages to compete as successfully against a differing standard. As many will have read in the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Newsletter Deirdre and I are undertaking a new project relating to the various breed standards (I am afraid the web site quoted in the newsletter is not fully ready yet) and this will draw together all the differences in these standards as part of its content.

Another topic which was raised with me recently was a question of ring etiquette. One or two people have mentioned to me that it seems to be becoming more common for one or two exhibitors when faced with a large class to ensure their dogs are first in the line to be seen and then mysteriously disappear from the ring during the duration of the class. Towards the end of the class the exhibit reappears, refreshed from having a rest in its box and clearly at an advantage over its rivals whose handlers have tried their best to keep their charges interested. Whether this convenes KC Rule or not I am not sure, my copy of the Rule Book being out of reach at the moment, but I would have thought it probably did, if not it is to say the least rather unsporting. The day may come when if it is contrary to KC Rules an objection is lodged and I suppose one cannot blame a disgruntled exhibitor whose dog has had to wait perhaps 40 minutes being peeved. As handlers we all do what we can to get the best out of our dogs but the playing field should be even for all surely?? Maybe something for you all to watch out for.

Jean Banfield's sister Greta Jones is in Hospital having suffered a stroke and has just undergone some major surgery Jean says that she is doing very well and they are hopeful that she will make a good recovery. She is bright and her speech and memory do not seem to be affected. Most people will remember Greta who manned the Club Benevolent Stall for some years. Jean took her cards and print outs of the e-mails sent for her when she visited her and she would like to thank everyone for them. Best Wishes for a speedy recovery go to her.

Joanna and Malcolm Green had their son home from Hawaii for the Christmas holiday and they were also thrilled to receive a lovely bowl of pink hyacinths from the Benevolent Fund which are still flowering. I too must thank the Fund for a lovely pot of chrysanthemums which like Joanna's hyacinths are still in flower and giving much pleasure Thank You Jean and the Bene Fund on our behalf.
