At the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Championship Show Dog CC and BIS went to Carine Rutten's well known Ch Antony, another success for him and following in from his BOB and G2 at Crufts. Bitch CC, BOS and RBIS went to Jean and Roger Banfield's Farleysbane Unsung Melody at Kingshaven. Reserve CC's went to Irene and Glen Robb's Ch Gleniren Scarlet Monogram in dogs and Rosemary and David Ayris' Baladora Pretty Remarkable in bitches. BPIS was Pat Munn's Ringlands Treasure Story.

It is quite some time since we have seen Connie Letch in the ring, Connie used to be quite a regular some years ago around the East Anglia area and I now hear that she has moved over to Ireland permanently. She has certainly made a super start to showing over there as at the Cork and DCC Show she took the GSD and BOB with her Coneysluck Peter Pan who I am told is a lovely little dog with huge ears and wonderful fringing.  I am sure all of us wish Connie a wonderful new life and much success. GSB went to Diane Mooney's  Ir Ch Omoanaig Flame of Tara, RGSD to  Switzer's Dolcissimo Midnite Cowboy and RGSB to Kilpatrick's Sonsirae Polgara the Sorceress.

Next week, May 3-8, sees the PCA Specialty which this year is being held in Cincinnati. It is probably the one occasion when exhibitors and breeders from all over the States, and many from Overseas, get together in one place and there is certainly a wealth of activities taking place over the 6 days. It must take a lot of organising, everything from Hotel Accommodation to seating plans around the rings is well organised. With various activities such as obedience and other performance events as well as confirmation judging takes place over the various days all eliding up to the final BIS. Hopefully the results will come through reasonably quickly thanks to the Internet.

Mark and I were very pleased to hear from an excited Marichin Rosenstein in the USA to tell us that at the first two days of the Shreveport Kennel Club Inc Show Nouveau Less Is More had had some success. On the first day he took WD and BOW with a Four Point Major, with his litter sister Nouveau Texas Lady taking RWB. The second day he did even better taking again WD and BOW with another Four Point Major and following this up with BOB and with it Group 4. He has now settled down to the 'American way', I am given to understand that in the USA many judges want to see the dogs behaving themselves perhaps a little more strictly than we accept over here. Over here of course many of us like to see a dog animated and if he is looking around etc most judges will position themselves to get the best view of the dog, apparently many in the States want the dog to stand reasonably still looking straight at the owner and everyone who saw Less Is More here in the ring will know what a playful little man he was. He is now getting the idea that he has to be a little more 'staid' although quite how Marichin has managed it I don't know!!!!

Dorothy Simpson tells me that after a number of years organising the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Calendar Queenie Bruce has now stepped down from this task and passed the mantle on to Dorothy. Over the years Queenie has made the calendar a 'must' for many of us and I am sure everyone will agree she has done a wonderful job with this. Dorothy has asked me to mention that folk should now be thinking about photographs for their entries to the competition which will take place at the Club's Open Show in July. Photos should be 7 inch by 5 inch minimum (and ideally this size) but larger photos up to A4 size can be accepted. Because of the popularity of the digital camera it has been decided to change the format slightly, winning digital photos will be required to supply a file on cd to enable the printer to get optimum results. You can enter as many photos as you wish, entry fees are 50p per photo. Closing date is 11 July and all entries, accompanied by a s.a.e.,  should be sent to Dorothy Simpson at Brimmond. Glenn & Irene Robb are also thrilled that their Gleniren Premiere League has just gained his Danish Ch title in just 4 shows. Marianne and Lars of the Toymaker Kennel campaigned him and he will be staying in Denmark till the end of the year

Sad news from Pat Ross that she has lost her much loved Khanness Birthday Boy.  Sunny was an exemplary Obedience dog who did a lot of winning for Pat He was in the first team to do the Gold Good Citizen display at Crufts and took part in an Obedience display.  He will be much missed by Pat.

Jo Davidson Poston had a good day at the Tunbridge Wells & DCS show where she took BIS with Ir Ch Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons Sh CM, this is I believe Zeb's 7th BIS win.

From Denmark comes news that Gleniren Premier League, bred by Irene and Glenn Robb and now owned by Marianne and Lars Hansen of the Toymaker Papillons has gained his Danish Title taking his final CC by going BIS at the Danish Papillon Club Championship Show.

Another Papillon that has done well overseas is Am & Can Ch Brentville The Entertainer At Tussalud bred by Brenda and Peter Taylor who it has just been confirmed ended 2004 as Canada 's No 1 Papillon and No 8 All Breeds.

I have received a couple of reports of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's Championship Show which was held recently. Peter Hancocks, the Show Manager writes "Thank you for your attendance at the champ show on 24th April. it was a very good entry. Most people agreed the atmosphere was nice and friendly, and  enjoyed the day out. I made some mistakes and will try to rectify them for the next show, which will be the open show on Saturday 3rd September 2005 . I am open to criticism and suggestions to make the show better for you the members. Thank you all, look forward to meeting you all again at the  next show. Peter Hancocks." The Secretary, Carolyne Allward Chebsey ahs kindly sent me further details and writes " The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Championship Show drew a good entry for the two judges with BIS being awarded to Multi Champion Antony much to the delight of his owner. Eye Testing had been arranged and only 18 papillons had their eyes tested. Mr Goodyear thought this was a poor response in view of the number of dogs entered at the show which was subsidised by the Club using the money that had been kindly donated some time back by the Urquhart's who agreed  it could be used in this way. David Abbott kindly brought along the now computerised  pedigrees of the late Clarice Waud. He was there to show members how the programme worked and I believe a few people took time out to be shown. Unfortunately I was really just to busy to be able to look myself.  The Committee have yet to decide what they intend doing with them by  way of letting members have the records if they wish and as soon as it has been  decided, it will be announced. The Archives were on display, for the first time for a good number of years and I believe a number of people spent some time looking through them all. I hope this will be a regular feature at the Club shows as it is nice for the new members to be able to look  back and see  records of Papillons of bye gone years. During the Lunch Break the President Mrs R Wood-Davis presented the winners of the 2004   Points Trophy Awards  and although a number of trophies had not been returned, the winners were given a laminated certificate to commemorate their win. Irene Robb took charge of the Junior Handlers Awards ceremony and handed out the prizes to all the Juniors present, with top awards for 2004 going to Abbie Gomez  who was  6-11 yrs Junior Handler of the Year; Sophie Langdon was 12-16 yrs Junior Handler of the Year and Caitlin Leiper was Most Improved Junior Handler of the Year. Well Done to you all. Our next show is the same weekend as Birmingham National so it is hoped that those that attend that show can stay overnight and exhibit the next day at the Club's show with Mr Ricky McKay as the Judge elect.  Overnight stays are allowed at the Coventry Venue. To those that are wondering why we choose this date, on checking the bookings I found out that no date had been booked for this show and this was the only date available to us as they were solidly booked up until the end of November. This seemed to be the fault of the venue people who had not pencilled in a date for us. Since this happening, we have booked the venue up till the year 2009 and it is in writing!"

Jim Ness from Scotland awarded CC's at WELKS, I believe this was possibly his first time doing so. Dog CC and BOB went to Frasermar Blizzard owned by Mr and Mrs Comfrie and M Whitehall. The Ch Show results will come in thick and fast now the season is under way but remember I also want to hear of your Open Show successes and all other news so do keep sending to me for the notes.  All you Obedience and Agility people too!! I can't report on it if you don't tell me about it!!

At the Hibernian & DCC Championship Show BOB & GSB went to Diane Mooney's Ch. Omaonaig Flame of Tara, GSD to Marion Sloan's Austrene Academy Award, RGSB to Diane's Omaonaig Fairy Footsteps and RGSD to Brookfield 's Graycaz in the Red.

At SKC Bitch CC and BOB went to Queenie Bruce and Amanda Bruce Jackson's Tijuana Georgiou, I believe this was her first CC although she has of course been a consistent winner having I believe 3 or 4 Breed Club BIS awards. Dog CC went to Jeanette MacKay's Jaylanjay Amastunner and this being his third CC gives him his title subject to KC confirmation.  Reserves went to Elizabeth Patrick's Volpecula Art Deco in dogs and Sophie Langdon's Christea Midnight Rose for Skyvana in bitches. Best Puppy was Pauline Wilson's Invergarick Modern Milly

The South Of England Papillon Club attracted an entry of 180 dogs making 223 entries. BIS went to Ann Stevens Tawzan Fun and Fancy Free. Please remember it is Dog World's policy only to allow me to report on the BIS for Club Open Shows, not mine.

Older members of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club will remember Arthur and Sally Stock, Arval Papillons, Arthur of course is no longer with us. I was pleased to hear that our Club Secretary had received a note from Sally's niece telling her that Sally was now living in a nursing home and would be delighted to her from some of her older friends in the breed. The address is Chapel Brook Hose, Moody Street , Congleton, Cheshire , CW12 4AN. Tel: 01260 277364. Perhaps Arthur and Sally's best known dog was Ch Arval Theodore who of course sired Ch Pierre of Oakridges.

At the Devon County Show Sue Morrel and Thesbina Teague's puppy Temelora Storm Petrel took BPIB and the Toy Puppy Group and had to return on the second day to challenge for BPIS, thus unfortunately missing the South of England Papillon Club Show. Thes took him back the second day and ended up taking RBPIS.

Our Dogs

Roger Banfield was the Judge at Birmingham national Ch Show and he made the Phalene Bitch Teague and Morrell's Serenglade Satanya For Temelora BOB and BCC She went on to make history by being placed Group 3, the first time for a Phalene Congratulations Sue and Thesbina!  RBCC wasSophie Langdon's Christea Midnight Rose For Skyvana.  DCC went to Dolly Kavanagh's Dan Swed and Ir Ch Serenglade Gold Sovereign and as this was his third he now adds the title of UK Ch to his impressive record. Both CC winners are of course bred by Linda Greenslade. RDCC was Comrie and Whitehill's Frasermar Blizzard and Best Puppy went to Kay Stewart and Kirsten Stewart-Knight's Tussalud Mine She's Mine who went on to win the Toy Puppy Group.

The KC are to hold a Ring Stewarding Seminar and I quote from their announcement:  "Folllowing the success of last year, a Ring Stewarding Seminar for all existing and potential Crufts Stewards will be held at the Kennel Club on Tuesday 2nd August. There will be two sessions; one in the morning and another in the afternoon, with a maximum of 30 attendees for each. The seminar will be run by Gerald King, Chief Steward at Crufts. If you want to register for the seminar, please contact Andrea Peters on 020 7518 1022 or e-mail apeters@the-kennel-club.org.uk The closing date for all applications is Thursday 30th June."

I have recently had some Computer trouble and have not received some of my messages so if you have recently sent me information please resend it if you suspect I have not received it.

Phil Shirley, Secretary of the South of England Papillon Club, has kindly sent me a report of the Club's Open Show held recently. "Sadly the weather let us down so the show had to take place indoors , with the main hall set a side for the ring using the club room for all the cages and boxes etc. From the start the catering sub committee worked jolly hard and many exhibitors found the bacon butties on arrival just the thing to recover form their journeys, all day tea and coffee were supplied free of charge and along with the £5 lunch ticket ,there have been many favourable comments from exhibitors saying  what a good Idea it is and saving them the bother of making sandwiches and flasks themselves.

The breed classes were well filled with few absentees for the Judge Jo Davidson-Poston, various cash and other prizes ( all generously donated by members) went to 1st - 3rd place  winners in all the breed classes. The Juniors gave a super display with Sophie Langdon putting them through their paces, again there were prizes for all Juniors.

During the lunch break a lady from the British Heart Foundation was invited into the ring to accept the cheque totalling £926. 25 which was the amount raised at the South of England Papillon Club sponsored dog walk in April for this charity. The day finished with the various special welfare classes judged by Sophie .

The Club stall and others did brisk business and along with a huge amount generated from the sale of raffle tickets: (its no use hiding Rodney will find you!) it proved to be a most friendly and successful day. Next year the show will be held on 20th May 2006 with the breed judge: Mrs J Savage (Abbeyton) and the welfare classes: Mr I Chandler. (Barleybright)" Certainly the reports I have seen of the show indicate that it was a very well run and enjoyable show

At Bath Dog CC and BOB went to David Roe and Glenn Robb's Sunshoo Imascarlet Oscars for Gleniren and he went on to take Group 3. Bitch CC went to Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's Serenglade Satanya For Temelora, Reserves went to Jane Thompson and Sandra Austin's Jhanakia Royal Highlander in dogs and Irene and Glenn Robb's Gleniren Starlight Kisses in bitches, she was also Best Puppy.

Carolyne Allward Chebsey writes regarding the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club AGM " At the AGM of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club held on 29th May, Mr Roger Banfield was elected (un-opposed) as the new Chairman. Mrs Sue Victor was elected as Acting Cup Steward. Mrs Viv Cotton, Mrs Jo Davidson-Poston, Mr Graham Fitch, Mr Keith Langdon, were elected to the committee along side standing Committee Members Mr Alan Bartram, Mrs Sue Morrell, Mrs Pat Munn and Ms Chris Pougher. Mrs Debbie Gornall has taken on the role of Welfare/Rescue co-ordinator. The committee has one vacancy for the Stall Holder as Mrs Lyn Richards has resigned due to her health. The Ballot for the 2007 Championship Show Judges were won by Mrs Claire Anne Ahern who will adjudicate over the Dogs  and Mr Terry Nethercott the Bitches (subject to KC approval). The two propositions on the agenda were not passed. The Committee were asked to look into a Club's Code of Ethics and feedback from the membership will be asked for and a report given at the next AGM."

I am sure we all wish the new committee good luck for the coming year, hopefully having some new faces on the committee will bring some fresh ideas and thinking to their decisions. I am pleased to see that the proposal regarding adopting the KC's Code of Ethics into our rules was not passed, hopefully the coming months will give the new committee time to prepare a better thought out proposal and it would be nice to think that the members of the Club will be encouraged to give their input into this, it does after all affect us all. I don't think a Code of Ethics that worries about whether dogs are on a lead in public places and more particularly insisting that breeders always pass over papers when selling a dog and ignores those issues such as selling puppies at extraordinarily young ages etc is what we should be considering.

Two shows held on the same day in Ireland , The Papillon Club of Ireland Championship Show and Irish Toydog Society Championship Show. At the Club Show GSD and BIS went to Marion Sloan's Ir Ch Austrene I'm Electric, GSB to Diane Mooney's  Ir Ch Omaonaig Flame of Tara , RGSD to Diane's veteran Omaonaig Polar Sun (16 years of age) and RGSB to Mrs Stone's Serenglade Leah Lika Liltie. BP was Mrs Belshaw's Belvisaj Simply Starlight. At the Toydog show GSB and BOB went to Ir Ch Omaonaig Flame of Tara, GSD to Mrs Belshaw's Belvisaj Simply Charming, RGSD to Ir Ch Austrene I'm Electric and RGSB to Mrs Killeen-King's Blue Moon of Kilcormack Soiam at Dolcissimo

Again from Ireland at the Munster Canine Association BOB & GSB went to Mrs Neally's Carrigteen Adonis Blue, GSD  to Killeen-King,Switzer and Greiffe's Pilipalas Greig, RGSD to Switzer's Dolcissimo Midnite Cowboy and RGSB to Kilpatrick's Sonsirae Polgara The Sorceress.

Carolyne Allward-Chebsey has extended the deadline for contributions to the Newsletter to 12th June So if you have any articles or things to go in please send them to her now.  I'm sorry Carolyne I did not know you had been ill - I hope you are really better now.

Carolyne also sends news of one of our older breeders Sally Stock, who together with her husband, had the famous Arval Papillons and whose lovely Ch Arval Theodore is behind so many of our top Champions.  Her niece Judith Springfellow has written to say that Sally is in a Nursing Home in Congleton - Chapel Brook House Moody St, Congleton Cheshire CW12 4AN Tel: 01260 277364.  Judith who lives at 12 Fford Thomas Gee, Denbigh, N Wales LL16  3JU says that although her aunt is OK she has deteriorated somewhat over the past year and is sure she would love to hear from her friends in the breed. The Stocks started a great many people off in Papillons and bred some lovely dogs.

I have had the following from Denise Welsh of Kazim Papillons: "For all agility buffs - I have started an agility league purely for papillons, if you are interested in competing for a trohpy then all the forms can be found on agilitynet.com I have only just sent them so it might take a little while but all the information should be there soon.

Also Graycaz Private Collection at Kazim won his first Open Jumping class on Sunday, he was very pleased with himself."

Denise's E-mail adress is hawkswood61@ricsonline.org if you want to know more. I am sure she will have a good response.
