Breed Notes for December 2005

2nd December
Dog World

In my report of the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club Championship Show I mentioned that the Dog CC and BIS winner, UK & Int Ch Queen Bless JP Red Ideal was owned by Mr K Hayashi and I understand that in fact he is now in the ownership of Roger Banfield. Unfortunately at the show some kind soul managed to take my copy of the show catalogue from our table otherwise I am sure I would have picked this up. Knowing that at the previous show Red Ideal had been entered in the name of his previous owner I assumed this was still the case. So Roger had the pleasure of having the dog gain his third CC whilst in his ownership.

I mentioned earlier that the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club was running an innovative and interesting event, an Internet Dog Show through its web site. A lot of effort has gone into setting this up, what a pity that so far the response has been so poor, especially as the proceeds will be going to a very good cause. There are plenty of you folk with access to computers who have I am sure many splendid photos of your dogs, so come on don't be miserly make an entry. Folk are quick to complain when club's don't do anything, not so quick to put themselves out a little and participate. Imagine the luxury of entering a dog show, no early starts, long drives, cold and windy halls, expensive entries and no spending hours bathing the dogs, just sitting in your warm houses making an entry!!!!

The Secretary of Lichfield Canine Society has asked me to mention that the Society will be putting on three classes of papillons at their Open Show on 28 January. The judge is Denise Walsh (Kazim) and whilst it had originally been intended to put on four classes they have had to amend this to three by removing the Puppy Class so as to comply with KC regulations regarding the number of classes Denise can judge. I do wish someone would explain to me quite why someone can judge three classes but not four (I know the regulation what I don't understand is the thinking behind it) What difference would judging an extra class at an Open Show make, surely if someone is capable of judging three classes they are just as capable of judging four, or does the extra class and few extra entries suddenly affect the judge's abilities. I am sure we have all seen judges at Open Show taking on the breed whom we have never heard of and never seen but who can judge three classes, or more, simply because they happen to give CC's in another breed. If my understanding is correct as someone who gives CC in Papillons I am entitled to judge Groups and BIS at Open Show level, yet someone in say the working group who has a lot more experience and understanding of that group than I but who has not yet reached the dizzy heights of giving CC's cannot. I have seen folk who I know only award CC's in their own breed, and some who are in my view fortunate to have done so given the lack of any success or achievement they have made in that breed, yet are able to judge BIS at Open Shows. Yet someone like Denise can judge three classes of her own breed but not four. I really think these things need working out more sensibly, no wonder Open Shows entries are so dire these days

Some concern has been expressed, rightly in my view, on Papnet regarding a site on the Internet aimed at people looking for puppies. There are a number of such sites of course some of which are better than others. Some feel that reputable breeders should not advertise on these sites (or indeed in other forms of media), my own view is that if such sites are easily accessible, as they are, to the general public than having reputable breeders on them will at least give prospective purchasers the chance of contacting a reputable breeder. If we take the view that some espouse. that reputable breeders should not have their details available we leave these places open solely to the less reputable breeders. What has caused some concern however is that this particular site carries a number of advertisements for papillons crossed with other breeds, and surprisingly the prices quoted for these cross breeds are in some cases higher than one would expect to pay for a pet pure bred papillon. Clearly there seems to be lucrative market. Breeding cross breeds of course is not illegal and whilst most of us would probably think there are enough problems with over population of dogs as it is and that at least most pure breeds have a rescue organisation one wonders who would rescue these cross breeds. Breeder/exhibitors should have a reputation to maintain within their own breed, and most would consider that reputation seriously, something which perhaps those breeding cross breeds do not have. In the main there are two reasons for breeding dogs, the breeder/exhibitor hopefully breeds to improve their own stock and as such have, or should have, a standard to maintain. Breeders who breed purely to sell, and surely that is the only reason for breeding cross breeds, do not and in such cases when profit is clearly the motive perhaps standards of care and future welfare of the puppy are less important. Sadly as I say there is nothing that can be done and the problems we are faced with have built up over the years, they are not a product of a sudden occurrence and all of us have to take some responsibility. Many of us have I know questioned the American way where most breeders will not sell a puppy unless it is either spayed or neutered or is sold on a contract to spay and neuter, and such contracts are only worthy if the seller is prepared to enforce that contract. In hindsight we should have learnt from their experience, even withholding or endorsing papers won't prevent folk from breeding cross breeds, or indeed pure breeds which can of course be sold without having to be registered, the only way to be certain is to ensure the puppy cannot be bred from. Whether we will ever be able to change to a system whereby we follow the American way I don't know. Would the public be willing to pay more to cover the costs, or would those breeders who adopt such procedures find they are unable to sell their puppies at a price that covers the costs, would breeders be prepared to find themselves earning a lot less out of their puppies by absorbing some of the costs?? I know the Breed Club is looking at a Code Of Ethics, maybe this is something which needs considering in that?????

My thanks to Diane Mooney for news from Ireland. At the Cloughan Show Bitch Green Star and BOB went to Dolly Kavanagh's Denemore Cameo Reflections, GSD (his first) to Diane's Omaonaig Rainbow Quest, RGSD to Mrs Belshaws Belvisaj Simply Charming and RGSB to Diane's Omaonaig Fairy Footsteps

Don’t forget the Papillon Club Christmas Cracker Day on 3 December: 1pm to 6 pm at the Graham Adams Centre, St James’s Rd., Southam, Nr Coventry (CV47 0LY, for those who have the classy electronic route-finders).  There will be a parade for baby puppies, a puppy class (6-9 months), and fun classes for everything. Father Christmas will attend, refreshments will be available, and entry is a nominal £1, children 50p - so don’t miss it.

The South West Toy Dog Club Christmas Party (advertised last week) was a swinging success - well attended, enjoyable, plenty of Papillons to the fore.  Coming back from this, very late (and it’s worth mentioning as a warning to other people travelling north on the M5),  the whole road is a mass of coned-off lanes and this, combined with the fog, led me off the M5 into Cleveden, and I spent the next hour exploring bits of Bristol, very rural and desolate, that I never even knew existed, trying to get back on to the motorway!  Be warned.  (I wished I had had one of the afore-mentioned classy route-finders).

Good news from Mary Melvin (Shalandar) that Josh (Elendil College Boy of Shalandar) has achieved ShCM - Show Certificate of Merit - (subject to KC confirmation), so very well done to him.  Obviously I was also well pleased!  Pat and Brian Cox also had a successful day at Poole & DCC Open Show last Sunday, where Tricianbri Ani-Sette not only went BOB but also took Group 3 - a lot more Papillons seem to be getting group placings now.

On a not-so-good note, our Puppy Register manager Margaret Unwin’s better half, Jim, is in hospital - I’m sure we all hope they will soon have him better and back home again.  I hope that perhaps the Register is quieter at this time of year, in the run up to Christmas, but Margaret certainly has a busy time of it, answering a continuously-ringing phone and sorting things out. And sometimes she has quite a difficult time - people are not always completely clear that the Register was set up just to put people who have puppies in touch with people who are looking for them, to pass on phone numbers and details - and not to sell puppies for us.

Lastly, I’m asked by Paula Meacham to draw your attention to an amendment in the schedule for the Lichfield Canine Society’s show on 28 January - four Pap classes are advertised, but, as Denise Welsh (Kazim) is only able to do three classes, the Puppy class has been taken off.  I imagine there will be a general Puppy class for your Papillon puppies, so you won’t miss out.

As ever, do send me news.

Sue Stanbury is again organising a get together for papillon folk in the South West for a Christmas meal. This year it is being held on Wed 21st December at 7.30pm and is at the same venue as last year, The Cat & Fiddle, on the main Sidmouth Rd (opposite side of the road to Paignton Ch Showground). All papillon folk are welcome whether they are members of any of the Breed Clubs or not and it is an ideal opportunity for folk to get together and enjoy themselves in nice comfortable surroundings, have a good meal (and no doubt a drink or two) and I am sure talk endlessly about papillons!!! Anyone interested in attending please contact Sue so she can arrange your booking, you can contact Sue either by e-mail at suestanbury@inixia.fsnet.co.uk or by telephone at 01392 369759. Don't leave it too long or you might miss out what promises to be a very enjoyable evening.

At the Southport and Birkdale CS Open Show. Irene and Glenn Robb had a good day bringing out a new puppy Sunshoo Imahot Shot, bred by Carolyn and David Roe, and took BPIB and RBPIS, his first show at just 6 months old. He is by Ch Sunshoo Imascarlet Oscars for Gleniren out of Sunshoo Imasong Bird. I am sure there must be others out there whose papillons are doing well in the show ring, please let me have information of your wins and often Open Show wins at Group level and beyond are not always picked up when scanning show reports.

The Breed judge at the show was Queenie Bruce and it is good to see that some Open Shows are still giving the Breed judges who know the breed. Over the last few weeks I have made a point of looking at the Show Section in Dog World and seeing who is judging the breed at Open Show level and from what I have seen very very few of the judges classified were breed judges. I know how difficult it is for Open Shows but I am sure the decline in entries at open shows owes quite a bit to the fact that too often the person judging the breed is unknown. Of course there are times when a specialist in another toy breed takes on the breed and that person has made an effort to study the breed, too often whoever it is not the case. And it is just as wrong when Papillon people judge other breeds when those people have had little experience or success in their own breed. I know it is not possible to always have a specialist but having one is becoming it seems the exception rather than the rule.

Sue Morrell writes "`The new all colour Papillon Club Handbook 2006 will be available at LKA on 9th December. All those who advertised in the handbook and who are attending the show will be able to collect their copy/copies from Chris Pougher, Stall Holder. If you did not advertise this time but would like a copy they can be purchased from Chris at the sum of £12 each. For people unable to attend LKA and (a) who advertised, those copies will be posted to you as soon after the 9th December as possible, and (b) for those not having advertised but would like a copy sent please contact Chris Pougher tel. 01162 789397 who will arrange to send you a copy/copies. The Handbook Sub Committee would like to take this opportunity of thanking all of you who supported this year's handbook with your advertisements and articles for without you there would be no handbook."

The Scottish Club held an Open Show on 27 November, where Best in Show was Elizabeth Cochrane’s Tijuana Victoria (Tutyak Kieran ex Tijuana Cha Cha, bred by Queenie Bruce): she then doubled the win with RBB going to her Tijuana Georgio (Tutyak Black Magic ex Tijuana Cha Cha, also of course bred by Queenie). Best Dog  and Reserve BIS was Skelton’s Adnamashan Kiss an’ Tell (Graycaz Lick and a Prayer ex Adnamashan Enchantment, bred by exhibitor), and RBD was Hatch’s Macstrak Classic Jazz (Tijuana Melody Maker ex Macstrak The Diva, bred by Carole).  Best Puppy was Patrick’s Frasermar Snowbird Volpecula (Volpecula Vanity’s Mirror ex Frasermar Snow Storm, bred by Mrs Comrie) There seems to be great compatibility between the Tutyak and Tijuana lines - they certainly had an impressive run here!  Judge was Ms Astrid Ogilvie (Pakov).

Last Saturday (26 November), a six-month-old puppy had an excellent first day out: David and Carolyne Roe’s Sunshoo Imahot Shot (Ch Sunshoo Imascarlet Oscars for Gleniren ex  Sunshoo Imasong Bird), shown by Irene Robb, won BPIB at  Stockport and Birkdale KA Open show, where the judge was Queenie Bruce, and then went on to win RBPIS under all-rounder Jimmy Hogan from Southern Ireland - a good start indeed!

A note from Sue Morrell says ‘The new all-colour Papillon Club Handbook will be available at LKA.  All those who advertised in the handbook and who are attending the show will be able to collect their copy/copies from Chris Pougher.  If you did not advertise this time but would like a copy, you can buy one from Chris (£12 each).  For people unable to attend LKA and who advertised, their copies will be posted asap after 9 December. Those who didn’t advertise but would like a copy, contact Chris Pougher (tel. 01162-789397).  The Handbook Committee would like to take this opportunity of thanking all of you who supported this year’s handbook with your advertisements and articles, for without you there would be no handbook.’

Going back to the South of England’s Education Day - people have been asking for the material which we gave out about Canine Herpes Virus.  This was quite out of date, but had been all we could find.  However, our speaker, Steve Dean, said that he was going to make it  the subject of a future ‘A Vet’s View’ in Dog World, and so we thought it would be better to wait for that to come out. It has appeared in DW now (11 November): I have made photocopies (by kind permission of DW), and will bring them to LKA for anyone who wants the information but perhaps missed it in the paper.

I hope Phil Shirley will be back to Breed-Note-writing by next week: he only touched down briefly in this freezing country from his sun-drenched cruise before whizzing off again to show his dog at the Amsterdam Winners Show this weekend.

You can send news to either of us (Phil: philrod@ntlworld.com, or tel.: 01273-304865) or to me.  Thank you for your support over the last few weeks!  And we again wish Sue Jones better health.

It was with much sadness I heard the news that Ian McKnight passed away on 4 December and our thoughts and prayers are with Anna and the family at this very sad time. Ian and Anna had celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary only a couple of months ago. Ian was of course well known to many of us, for many years we saw him around the ringside and many will remember him from the Northern and Eastern Counties Club Shows where he was often to be seen handing out the catalogues and giving every one a warm welcome. Ian suffered with MS for many years a condition he and Anna bore with great dignity and fortitude and I am sure many of us quietly admired the manner in which they both just got on with things. The funeral will have taken place by the time these notes are read, it is to be held on Tuesday 13th December, 2.30pm at Lincoln Crematorium, Washingborough Road Lincoln and Anna has asked that only family flowers be sent but that anyone wishing to donate to the M S Society may do so by sending a donation care of The Lincolnshire Funeral Service, Portland Street, Lincoln. Because of the shortness of time as these notes need to be in earlier during the run up to Christmas I hope to be able to have a fuller appreciation of Ian printed in the next week or so

I am sorry to report that Beryl Newton has been unwell and has I understand been in hospital for an operation. I believe she is now back at home recuperating but has been rather poorly and I am sure would appreciate hearing from folk and that this will cheer her up over the next few weeks.

I recently gave some details of the Internet Dog Show which the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) is running, the proceeds of which go to a very worthy cause, Victims of the Katrina tragedy. . Unfortunately the interest shown in this to date has not been as good as hoped and whilst I am sure we are all busy in the run up to Christmas it is a pity that a little more effort has not been made to support this innovative venture. In an effort to encourage a little more support the Club had redefined the criteria for entry and extended the closing date. Entry is open to all throughout the world, it is not restricted to members of any particular club or indeed of any club. Whilst you can enter up to 5 photographs per dog the minimum number required has been reduced to one photo and closing date is now 31 January 2006. Full details are available on the Club's web site at http://www.papillonclub.co.uk and should anyone need any extra help, there will be someone available at LKA and Manchester Ch. Shows to take photos, money for your entries and any charitable donations you wish to make. Anyone with any queries can contact the Internet Club Show Corresponding Secretary Viv Cotton at e-mail: viv.aporia@tiscali.co.uk tel: 01284 704359 or Press Officer Jo Davidson-Poston e-mail: Jo@spinillons.com tel: 0208 959 7868. I hope everyone will give this as much support as they can, apart from the worthiness of the charity that will benefit from this, the Club have gone to a great deal of effort to put this on and deserve our support. I am sure there are lots of you out there that have many suitable photos, so come on join in this fun and help others at the same time.

Deirdre Ashdown has asked me to mention that all pre paid orders of the Complete Illustrated Standard of the Papillon & Phalene have now been sent out so folk should by the time these notes are out have received their copies. Apparently some folk are still sending in orders with the old postage rates, in fact postage first class for the UK is £6, a slightly higher figure than previously made known as of course the book ended up somewhat larger than originally intended. If you are going to send off an order please make sure you use the correct rates.

I was sorry to hear from Helen Wheeler, Secretary of the South Wales Papillon Club, that Vice President and former Chairman of the Club Jackie Meears (nee Hughes) had past away suddenly. John and Gary Turner had an enjoyable day at the Boston Premier Show with their new puppy, Bodebi Rythm Is A Dancer who at just 6 months and four days old took BPIB under Glenn Robb and went on to take PG1 and BPIS. It was only his second show, his first having been the day before at LKA where he took MPD and BPD. Quite a debut for him.

Sue Morrell writes regarding the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Handbook and says "I have now received all the original advertisements from the printers and will return photographs and discs to all those who requested their return and who sent sae`s. I feel that it may be better to wait until after the Christmas postal rush is over before sending them out as I would not want any lost or not delivered. Thank you all for your advertisements and articles, all of which made the new 2006 handbook so interesting and colourful." I am pleased at last to be able to give some news of the Handbook , it is a pity that I have not previously been given news of this venture as I would of course have been more than happy to plug it. Having had the opportunity of a quick look through I have to say it looks a very good production indeed. This time it is entirely in colour, which I personally think adds greatly to it, and there are a good deal of informative and interesting articles not only about the show ring but also about breed health and a very good article on presentation. A very good effort from the sib committee and I am sure everyone will want to add it to their collection of handbooks. I would suggest contacting Sue without too much delay I don't know how many copies are available but I won't be surprised if they go quickly.

The funeral for Jackie Meears (nee Hughes) took place at Kingston Crematorium , Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey on Monday 19th December 1.40pm. Those wishing to send donations should send these as requested by Jackie to the South Wales Papillon Club Welfare Fund.

David Roe have been kind enough to send me some details regarding Ian Mcknight's funeral. He writes "There was a very good attendance for the funeral of Ian McKnight on Tuesday 13 December, at Lincoln crematorium, the weather was kind to us with just a glint of winter sunshine on this very sad occasion. Amongst the Papillon people present were Bubbles Wood Davis, Gordon and Kathy Urquhart, Jimmy and Dorothy Simpson, John and Jenny Edson, Pat and Sandy Munn, Irene and Glenn Robb and myself and Carolyn.

Ian was born in India and returned to the UK when he was about 3 years old and went to live with his Aunt and some cousins. He attended Queens College Cambridge before doing National Service, spent many years in the Paper industry and then moved to Shell for the remainder of his working career. On his retirement Anna and Ian then moved down from Aberdeen to Lincolnshire so that it would be easier for Anna to attend dog shows. Ian’s great hobby was his computer which he spent hours on, always happy to help others and give encouragement to.

As far as the dogs were concerned Ian was always one of the ‘Back room Boys’ looking after the dogs for Anna when she was away at the shows, attending to all that paper work and pedigrees that is associated with the breeding and showing of a successful kennel, which Anna had achieved over many years, and always being a tower of strength to Anna. He will always be remembered at the Northern & Eastern Papillon Club shows, where from his wheel chair in later years he would cheerfully greet every one at the door and hand out the catalogues and have a friendly word with them.
Ian is great loss to Anna and the family, Marie and Malcolm and the grand children, all of whom he was extremely proud of. And I am sure with the support of her family and friends, it won’t be long before we see Anna back at the shows with her beloved Papillons to which she has dedicated a large part of her life in her very successful breeding programme which has achieved so much success in the show ring over many years, committee work for Papillion clubs, and on a personal note all the help & advice that the Daneview Kennels have given us over many years."

Carolyne Allward Chebsey, Secretary of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club, tells me that she was pleased to hear recently from Isobel Urquhart (Blackpark) who has asked her to pass on through these notes her thanks to everyone for their Christmas Greetings and Cards. She is sorry that she is not well enough to send cards herself but wishes everyone a Very happy Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. I am sure we all wish Isobel better health and an enjoyable festive season.

Carolyne also mentions asks me to remind Club Members that all items and nominations for the AGM next year must be received by her no alter than 5 January 2006. A reminder has been enclosed with the Christmas Newsletter, which ahs now been posted to all those not present at LKA. If you have a nomination you want to make or something for the Agenda it would be advisable to deal with it as soon as possible.

A good end to the year for Karen and Steve Mask with their Kazkell Definitely Dreamin who took BOB and G1 at the Lincolnshire CS Open Show. Dreamin is I believe litter brother to their Kazkell Dillons Dream who has been very successful for Karen and Steve.

Finally don't forget whilst you are all sitting there waiting for the effects of an over indulgent Christmas to wear off, take the opportunity to enter the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's Internet Dog Show, full details on the web site at http://www,papillonclub.co.uk

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the sudden and unexpected death of Mrs Jackie Meears nee Hughes. For many years Jackie shared the affix “Bluejays” with Karen Farrell. Jackie was a Vice President and former Chairman of the South Wales Papillon Club. Although of late her health had not allowed her to attend any shows she always retained an interest in the Club and will be sadly missed. Our condolences go to her friends and family.

I would like to thank Anne Borg for stepping in and continuing the notes while I have been away on holiday, hopefully Anne will be contributing to the notes from time to time. I must say it was bit of a shock to arrive back to the winter weather, only back a couple of days I took off to the Netherlands to visit friends and attend the Amsterdam Winner Show, as usual the show was held in the RAI centre south of the city. The entry of Papillons and Phalenes was rather low this year, perhaps the fact the same judge had only three months previously judged the Papillon and Phalene Club of the Netherlands Championship show. Rather strange that any judge should want to judge a similar entry so soon (they say some people just can’t say “no”).

The entry and winners gave a very international result. In Papillons Multi Ch Antony bred in Estonia and owned by Carine Rutten in the Netherlands took the dog CACIB,BOB and Winner ’05 title for what must be now the forth year in succession a fantastic result, Antony’s son Ch.Up and Downs Frederike took the dog RCACIB, in bitches Multi Ch.  Connection Tri Symphony, bred in Finland and owned by  Abeloos-Devos, Roosens & Toivanen took the Bitch CACIB and Winster ‘05 title, with Topasar Hawaïïan Rose, registered in Germany owned by  Mrs. Jenkins taking the RCACIB .

The Youth Winner and Winster ’05 titles went respectively to:  Romansas Taurapilis bred in Lithuania ,but owned in the Netherlands by Patricia van Eijk, and the bitch was Carine Ruttens Swedish import Siljans Averil. Best puppy was  Mondelise Lord O’ Delight, bred in Australia by Sharon Mahoney on Nouveau lines and imported to Carine Ruttens Up and Downs kennels, a very smart puppy, he was short listed to the last few in the  Puppy group.

I had a good chat with Sue Jones this week and am sorry to report Sue is not progressing as well as hoped, she also has the worry of her husband who is not in the best of health. Sue asked me to say she is unable to send Christmas cards this year but would like to wish you all a very happy time and much success in the New Year, do drop Sue a note if you have some Papillon news for her I know she will appreciate it.

LKA was judged by Dick Terry with a good entry of 153 dogs. What a great result for the Gleniren kennel of Glenn and Irene Robb taking the double, with the top Papillon of the year Ch Gleniren Scarlet Monogram taking the dog CC and BOB, he was also placed group three under Mr S Bardwell, Glenn and Irenes bitch Ch Gleniren Scarlet Signature took the BCC, reserves went in dogs to : Mr K HAYASHI  Int Ch Queen Bless JP Red Ideal,  the RBCC went to Mrs A C & Ms E G N BORG Elendil Amaryllis. BPIB went to Mr R & Mrs J BANFIELD Kingshaven Pinelan Cleopatra.

The new Handbook of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club was available at LKA and what an extremely good publication this is, this year all the advertisements are in colour and the quality of the printing is quite exceptional, many congratulations to the handbook sub-committee.

News of a good Open show win comes from John and Gary Turner, their Bodebi Rhythm is a Dancer who won MPD at LKA, ( It was his first show, he is aged 6 mths. and one week), by Daneview Rhythm ‘n Blues, out of Elvistime Lady Holly.

On 11th Dec. he went to the Boston Premier Open Show, where he won BPIB under Glenn Robb.  He then went on to Group 1 in the Toy Group under Toy specialist Amanda Ellis, and then went BPIS under Anne-Marie Class. The brothers also showed their young Pug (who had won BP at LKA), and he went BPIB and got Group 2 in the Toy Group, they also showed their Affenpinscher, who won Best NSC Toy, and went Group3 in the Toy Group! So they almost swept the board! Well done.

Its good to get Open show results, some of which never seem to appear in print, please do let me have your results, you all work very hard in the show/agility ring and im sure you deserve a brag from time to time.

With the year coming to an end, its time to remind you, your club membership subscriptions for 2006 will shortly be due, please do remember to renew you memberships, clubs rely on these and treasurers are usually busy enough without chasing after you, support your clubs and they will support you.

Well I am happy to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and hope everyone gets the success they deserve in 2006.
