Phil Shirley, Secretary of the South Of England Papillon Club, has been kind enough to send a report of the Club's recent Christmas Party, he writes "The Christmas Party Match of the South of England Papillon Club at Chieveley was very well attended, just how Janet and Ian Chandler and their helpers manage to produce the wonderful Roast Turkey lunch is beyond me, I know they prepare well in advance but to see it all come together is still amazing. Everyone said they had a wonderful time, Denise Pearch judged the match, which drew a good entry, the baby puppies were delightful and it is always nice to see them meeting up with others often on their first outing. Santa arrived after lunch and delivered a nice gift to everyone. The club stall did excellent business, I guess there were many last minute presents being bought, one of the new Items on sale were plush toy Papillons handmade by Margaret Orchard, these really are super and come in both Papillon and Phalene variety, hopefully there will be a selection of these available on the South of England Club stall at Crufts for anyone interested in seeing them. An alteration of the date for the AGM of the South of England Papillon Club, this will now take place on Easter Saturday 15th April at Bradfield and not as advertised, the day will start with the “Papillons Walk for Charity” this year to be held in aid of Dogs for the Disabled, we shall then have an Easter Egg hunt (including a bone hunt for the dogs), followed by a buffet lunch then the AGM, details and sponsorship forms will be sent out to members soon."

Carolyne Allward Chebsey has also sent in a report of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's Christmas Cracker day and writes " The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's 2nd Christmas Cracker Day was well attended by members and friends of the breed at Southam, Coventry on Saturday 4th December, and a good time was had by all from the comments received. Prizes/presents were given to all who were there with the dogs doing equally as well getting their own prizes, some of which were kindly donated by the Judge, Miss Jennifer Williamson. The biggest class of the day was the favourite 'find the sausage' which was run in heats until there were 5 winners and oh how those paps enjoyed their sausages!! The Fancy Dress Class was won by 'Christmas Parcels' with 'Digit' and his handler wrapped up with Christmas Paper. The eventual winner of 'who the judge would like to take home' was won by 11 and 1/2 year old 'Choco' owned by Shirley Colyer who went home with a large box of prizes. The new class Musical Mats was well filled and it showed who were the most obedient paps on the day. It was noted that none of mine went in that class! (though I must add, one bred by me but doesn't live with me, got down to the last 3 without much persuasion<grin>). Santa took time off from his busy schedule to pay us a visit to distribute presents to the Junior Handlers and the Christmas Crackers to everyone, with one lucky person, Dave Lee, winning the 'fiver'. The food tables were laden which was soon devoured with very little to clear up at the end. Our thanks must go to many who gave donations to those who helped prior to and on the day, in particular, special thanks must go to Janet Chandler who organised the kitchen for us without having to be asked. Thank You Janet. Thank you one and all, and to those members and friends who came, which made all the hard work worthwhile. Hope to see you all at next years event."

I am very sorry to have to report that Caroline Lee Farnsworth's mother Mrs Ann Lee passed away on 27 December. Ann was of course very well known in Bichons through her very successful Warmingham kennel. Our condolences go to Caroline and the family at this very sad time.

Diane Mooney tells me that there was a Championship Show in Ireland on 27 December at the Cloghran Show Centre and the Papillon exhibitors had planned to hold a party much like the one's we used to have some years ago at LKA. It appears however that most of the Papillon entries went astray, including Diane's which is rather odd as they were all sent from different parts of Ireland and the UK at different times. It will be interesting to see whether other breeds experienced such a problem of if it was confined just to Papillons. As Diane says it was extremely disappointing not only for the exhibitors who were unable to exhibit but also for the judge and in the end the entry was only 5 dogs. It wall be interesting to see if some sort of investigation is undertaken as one does wonder how these could have gone astray if as Diane says they were all posted at different times from different places. The results were DGS and BOB Sloans Ch Austrene Im Electric, RDGS Clarks Ch Austene Copper Glow, Bitches (only one present) BGS Kavanaghs Denemore Cameo Reflections

Sue Victor has been kind enough to remind me that the Pedigree Masterfoods Stakes Finals will be held on Saturday 29th January 2006 at the Metropole Hotel, NEC, Birmingham. and that part of this prestigious event is the JHA National Finals, to find the best Junior Handler in the UK. Once again, the Pap juniors will be flying the flag high for us all. This year, both Semi Finals winners at Richmond were "pap kids", and will therefore represent the 6-11 and 12-16 Toy Groups. Rebecca Thompson and John Lieper will be stepping out in style, and going all out to impress the judge, Liz Dunhill. This is the pinnacle of achievement in the world of Junior Handling, and we should all be extremely proud. Also part of the overall event of course is the Champion Stakes and for the first time in a few years the breed will be represented, Irene and Glenn Robb's Ch Gleniren Scarlet Monogram having won through at Bournemouth. Good Luck to all taking part on the day and let's hope we have plenty of Papillon success to celebrate

I hear that at the Chesham and District CS Open Show Jo Davidson Poston's Ibstock Tulullah For Spinillons took BOB and Group 1

Some while ago I mentioned that in the USA a Handbook for Phalenes had been produced featuring phalenes from all around the world and I understand this has proven to be very popular and that there are now only a few copies left. Anyone who would like a copy of this, which of course features entirely phalenes and has some interesting articles relating to the variety, will need to order one quickly if they are not going to be disappointed. The cost is $40 U.S. plus $11.00 shipping to the U.K and information about ordering can be obtained from one of the co authors Lisa Perle whose e-mail address is carpe027@umn.edu

And a final reminder that entries for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Internet Dog Show close on 31 January. As I mentioned before the profits are going to the very worthy cause of Animal victims of Hurricane Katrina and taking part as well as being a bit of fun will do some good. I am pleased to say the entry has been boosted after a slow start but I am sure there are many more of you out there who could make the effort to support this and put in an entry.

Well another year starts and the first Championship show of the year will soon be here. I have the list of Championship judges for this year with only a few missing, I would be glad if anyone can fill in the judges for SKC (Aug), Darlington, Belfast and Midland Counties. Here are the rest: Manchester: Mrs E Patrick, Crufts: Mr M Fowler, UK Toy: Mrs E Cochrane (Dogs) Mrs P Munn (Bitches), Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club: Mr D Abbott (Dogs) Mrs J Scovell (Bitches), Welks: Mrs B Taylor, Birmingham National:Miss C Hatch, SKC (May) Mr A Bendelow, Bath: Mrs E Anderson, Southern Counties: Mrs R Johnston, Three Counties: Mr F Yeoh, Border Union: Mrs R Brady, Blackpool: Mrs B Flavel, Windsor: Miss H Barr, SWKA Miss V Hourihane, Paignton: Mr D Jenkins, East of England: Mrs I Robb, Leeds: Mrs J Dickinson Franks, Bournemouth: Mrs Z Thorn Andrews, WKC: Mrs R Wardle, Birmingham City: Miss M Hourihane, Richmond: Mrs H Byers, Papillon Club of Scotland: Mr A Wright, South Wales Papillon Club: Mrs E Needham, Drifield: Mrs J Leverett, Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club: Mrs S Carroll (Dogs)  Mr P Taylor (Bitches), LKA: Mrs S Stanbury.

I do hope all judges will submit a written critique as required under new KC regulations, the Papillon Breed Council agreed to write to every championship judge and ask for a copy of their critique to be sent to the BC which will at least help in the cases where the judges critiques mysteriously go astray.

More good news for the Turner brothers their: Bodebi Rhythm is a Dancer, finished the year in great style at Sleaford taking BPIB and P Group 2, they look to have a successful year ahead with this lad, good luck.

Sadly I heard the news that Caroline Lee-Farnsworth’s mother, Ann Lee passed away on the 27th December, Ann had been ill for a long time, her Warmingham Bichon Frises kennels had so much success and Ann was Top Breeder 2005. Condolences go to Caroline and her family.

The Agility results for 2005 have arrived from Denise Welsh, this was the first year for the Papillon Agility league and it was great to see so many taking part, the overall winner and winner of the South of England Papillon Club’s “Harley the Magnificent “ Trophy is Angie Tydeman with Tio who amassed 585 points, hot on her heels as runner up was Margy Wigan and Fern with 421 points, congratulations to all those taking part, do contact Denise on 01323 441583 if you would like information regarding Agility.

Sad news came from Jean Leverett that she lost Ch. Glasafon Mindella shortly before Christmas, I believe “Min”as she was known was nearly 12 years old, she was Jeans constant companion. Min will live on in the champion’s record book, she was a grand daughter of Ch Inverdon Ganymede and became a champion herself  in 1998.

The Internet Dog Show of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club has an extended entry date until 30th January 2006 the proceeds of this event will go to canine charities dealing with the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, those on line can enter at www.papillonclub.co.uk

There will be someone available at Manchester Championship show to help with Photos and entries.

Good luck to everyone for the coming year, please remember to send in your news

I am sorry to have to report that Margaret Unwin's partner Jim passed away on 8 January, he had I understand been in hospital for some seven weeks. Our condolences go to Margaret at this very sad time.

I understand John and Gary Turner will have a number of copies of the Complete Illustrated Standard for The Papillon and Phalene available at Manchester and for those folk not attending Manchester they can collect copies at Crufts from Deirdre

Deirdre attended a Book fair recently and picked up an interesting item, a page from 'The Graphic' of 1928 entitled "Well Bred Faces - prominent people at Crufts Dog Show last week" and dated February 18 1928. It features a number of drawings of well known dogs of the time but included amongst the text is the following "Among the Toy Dogs most sensation was caused by the papillons, whose limit was 3 pounds. Several of these small champions however took the ring at only two and a half pounds" There is also a lovely little sketch on the page of a Papillon standing on a table with (as Deirdre describes) an arched crested neck, good coat, beautiful plume and decent construction. The Waud and Hutchings Book shows that the Standard of Points taken from the original Royal Society of St Hubert (Belgian Kennel Club) 1923 gives a weight criteria of not over 12 pounds. The Hutchinson Encyclopaedia which is I believe dated in the mid 30's shows a weight criteria of between 3 to 8 pounds. I assume from the comments in the cutting that a lower weight limit must have been introduced sometime between 1923 and 1928

Again from the Waud and Hutchings Book the first time CC's were recorded for the Breed at Crufts was 1925 and in fact in 1928, when this article is dated, the CC winners were Ch Emile De Flandre (Dog) and Ladybird (Bitch). I think this must be one of the earliest (if not the earliest) reports we have of papillons in the ring over here unless anyone has any records of reports from the pervious three years. Looking at the records reminded me that the owner of the first ever Bitch awarded a CC at Crufts in 1925 was Mrs C M Hunter who was the very first Chairman of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club when it was formed in 1923. Mrs Hunter as some will recall attended the Club's Diamond Jubilee Championship Show in 1923, needless to say Mark and I remember this well as our Ch Nouveau Lord of the Rings took his title and BIS on the day.

News comes from Elizabeth Patrick that the Papillon Club of Scotland are running a fun competition called Pup Idol, they are just asking for cute puppy pictures to be sent in, if you are online go to the Clubs website at www.scotpapnews.blogspot.com/ for details, there will be a mystery prize and the puppies will be judged purely on cuteness, those with the “Ah” factor, but then I don’t think I ever a puppy yet that wasn’t cute so I guess the judges  will have their work cut out choosing a winner.

Diane Mooney sent news of the Dublin Dog Show held just after Christmas, the Papillon exhibitors were hoping to have a Christmas party a bit like the LKA exhibitors used to do in the old days, Diane says: “sadly many of the entries went astray including mine, this was most disappointing to both the exhibitors who were looking forward to their Christmas show, the Judge, and the Green Star winners on the day.” Diane continues “I have made a new year resolution to send a SAE with my entries in future, after all I take the time to fill out entry forms, write a cheque, how much more effort would it need to enclose an SAE? this way I shall know in good time that my entries arrived.” I think that’s a good Idea of Dianes to include an SAE although in the UK you also need the proof of posting for the KC to honour the entry. In the end there were only 6 dogs present and the DGS and BOB went to Marian Sloans Ch. Austrene Im Electric and the BGS to Dolly Kavanaghs Cameo Reflections. Its always nice to hear news from Ireland, I know they have great fun at their shows and I thoroughly enjoyed the Munster Circuit shows I went over for a couple of years ago.

Jean and Roger Banfield will have been pleased to hear: Kingshaven Uphold the Dream has won his American title, and he did so in great style with three, 5 point major wins including Winners Dog at a specialty.

The results of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club annual points trophy winners for 2005 have been announced. Out of the 9 Annual Points Trophies awarded by the Club each year for achievements in the breed Gleniren Papillons won 7 of the trophies and Sunshoo Papillons won 2 of them making a clean sweep for the two kennels, the results are as follows: Irene and Glenn Robbs: Ch Gleniren Scarlet Monogram wins the Shimna Trophy for top winning Dog and the Ringlands Trophy for top winning Papillon, Ch Gleniren Scarlet Signature wins the Elendil Trophy for top winning Bitch, Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses wins the Kuruso trophy for Top Puppy and also the Graycaz Trophy for top Ch. Class Winning Papillon, the Gleniren Kennel also take the Monamie trophy for Top Owners and the Joan Brown Rose Bowl for Top Breeders. Carolyn and David Roes Sunshoo Kennel wins the Ch.Charthamcoombe Tristam trophy and the Miss Taylor Stud Dog Trophy for Top Stud with Daneview Rhythm and Blues they also win the Greenhedges Trophy and the Brood Bitch and Progeny Cup with Sunshoo Imascarlet Erica at Gleniren for Top Brood Bitch. That was a hugely successful year for these two kennels, which work so closely together and congratulations to them all, looking at the results of the last couple of decades no single kennel has won so many awards in one year a tremendous achievement. Viv Cotton does a tremendous job collating all the wins and awards over the year and must be thanked for the hard work she puts into the task, I know Viv is a stickler for getting things right and all credit to her for producing such accurate records. These records will remain on the Clubs role of honour for years to come and will make fascinating reading and helpful data for breeders of the future who like to study pedigrees and breeding.

Sadly I have just heard that Margaret Unwins partner Jim has died, Jim had been seriously ill since before Christmas. Margaret does so much work behind the scenes with the Papillon puppy register also in her committee role with the South of England Papillon Club, Im sure we all send our deepest sympathies to Margaret at this sad time.

Irene Robb has asked me to mention the following for the Papillon Junior Handling of The Year Awards "All Juniors should make sure that they have either given or sent their position cards to Irene for their points to be calculated for the breed shows during 2005. Irene must have your position cards to awards the points, so make sure yours have been sent. The address to send position cards is : The Robins, Cann Lane South, Appleton, Warrington, WA4 5NJ, Cheshire."

Carolyne Allward Chebsey writes "The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's AGM papers have been sent to all home members this week. Please note the change of date from the month of May to 5th March and the change of venue from previous years. Your voting paper for the 2008 Championship Show Judges, is to be back with the scrutineer by 5th February. Please don't forget to send them back."

Apart from that there seems to be little news around at the moment, if you have any news for the Breed Notes please let me have it either by telephone 01469 530760 or e-mail to mike@nouveaupaps.co.uk

Continuing with puppy successes: Kirsty Miller has been having a good run lately with her young puppy Feorlig Midnight in Georgia, after several BPs she went to Luton show and took BP under Margaret Bunce and went onto PG2 under M. Cocozza, Kirsty  is presently studying at the London School of Drama for a degree in Musical Theatre. Another good result for a young puppy was Mr & Mrs Backs:  Kazkell I Ching for Leighroy, attending his first show at Southampton, he won BP under Sophie Langdon and went on to PG4, judged by myself. Sophie had a good entry; her BOB was Mary Melvins: Elendil College Boy of Shalandar who recently gained his Show Certificate of Merit. It is very encouraging to see younger breed enthusiasts taking on judging appointments, we must all support them with entries to enable them progress through the judging lists.

Junior Handlers are asked to make sure: you have either given or sent your position cards to Irene Robb for your points won at breed shows during 2005 to be collated. Irene must have your position cards to award the points. Remember points make prizes! The address to send position cards to is: Mrs Irene Robb, The Robins, Cann Lane South, Appleton, Warrington, WA4 5NJ, Cheshire.

Carolyne Allward-Chebsey sent the following: “The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's AGM papers have been sent to all home members this week. Please note the change of date from the month of May to 5th March and the change of venue from previous years.

Your voting paper for Judges for the 2008 Championship Show is to be back by 5th February. Please don't forget to send them back.”

Deirdre Ashdown tells me, her and Mike Fosters: “Complete Illustrated Standard for the Papillon and Phalene” is enjoying tremendous success, the book, which really contains a huge amount of information and beautiful pictures is shortly to be reviewed in both dog papers. If you require further copies, Deirdre will be pleased to bring them to Crufts for you to save on the postage, which is £6.00 in the UK and more than twice that outside Europe.

For those adventurous exhibitors amongst you, perhaps you would like to make the trip to Poland this year for the World Show which will be held in Poznan on  9th –12th November, the judge for Phalenes and the Puppy and Junior Papillons is Zivile Povilaitiene from Lithuania and the judge for adult Papillons is Krystyna Opara from Poland, our breed will be judged on the Sunday the 12th, winners in both varieties and sexes will gain the World Winner title along with Polish Champion for those already titled. Also the winners from the Youth Classes will take the Junior World Winner title. Next year the show will take place in Mexico before returning to Europe for 2008 where it will be held in Sweden, 2009 in Slovakia and 2010 in Denmark.

Several of our general Championship Show schedules have already arrived, they seem to be sending them out even earlier this year, perhaps it is a good Idea and enables you to plan your show year well in advance, with the show calendar becoming so busy please do remember to support your Club Open shows, schedules for the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club and the Papillon Club of Scotland arrived this week , Viv Cotton will judge the N & E Club and entries close on 20th February and Karen Farrell will judge the Scottish Club Show and entries close on 13th February.

Staying with Scotland, there was a lovely piece of news on papnet: Hilary Byers (Chappell) who many will remember as Hilary Ness, recently went to play Bingo at her local Gala club, she won over £200.000 on the “National” game, congratulations, what a terrific piece of luck for Hilary who is expecting her second child in March, im sure there will be much celebration in the Byers household north of the border.
