The South of England Papillon Club's "Papillons Walk for Charity" will take place on Easter Saturday at Bradfield, starting at 11am.and will be followed by an Easter Egg hunt (and dog bone hunt). After this will follow lunch and the Club's AGM. Those who intend to take part in the walk please contact Anne Borg on  01865 762201 so that she can get a rough idea of the numbers. If you are not able to take part in the walk but would like to make a donation, proceeds will be going to “Dogs for the Disabled”, then please contact Anne and pledge your donation. Many will have seen the wonderful work these “Dogs for the Disabled” do which was highlighted in “Friends for Life” at Crufts this year, with your help the South of England Papillon Club will be able to make a substantial contribution to the Charity. Please do make the effort to support this Club which has been very successful over the few years it has been running these events and has raised huge amounts for various different charities. If my memory is correct last year they raised in the region of £900 for the British Heart Foundation, with everyone's support they can equal or even surpass this figure this year. The Club's Open Show will take place on and entries close on 29 April, if you have not had a schedule contact. Breed judge this year is Joan Savage (Abbeyton) and judging the Welfare Classes will be Ian Chandler (Barleybright) with Erin Boal judging the H Classes. With over £300 prize money for the bred classes on offer I am sure you will all want to enter!!!

A new champion from overseas was made up at UK Toys being this year's Crufts BOB being Ch Connection Tri Symphony jointly owned by Mrs E Abeloos-Devos, Jan Roosens and Vesa Toivanen whose details of course I gave only recently. Congratulation to her owners on their first UK Champion. Dog CC, his first I believe, went to Ms C LEES Bodebi Ray of Success at Lafford bred by John and Gary Turner. Reserves went to Siljans My Man in dogs, again from overseas he is owned by the same partnership as the BOB winner and was bred by Ulla Hanis, and in bitches to Irene and Glenn Robb's Ch Gleniren Scarlet Signature. I believe there is some concern as to the dog's eligibility in the class in which he was entered which is a shame for how owners. A sad reminder that the criteria for classes here in the UK must be understood, if in doubt enter open or an age class. BP went to Miss A Mason Thoughts Of Stardom At Amsema who I understand went of to BPIS4 so many congratulations to her.

This year UK Toys put on Obedience Classes and Papillons did very well in these. In the Pre Beginners Class Claire Butler's Tinklebury Dr No took 2nd place and Miss S Burns' Lucindale Louis T T F'Lah took 4th, in the Beginners Class Miss L A Henry's Phimeen Polyanna took 1st and Miss D Deuchar's Shamal Sequel was 4th. Finally in the Novice Class Phimeen Polyanna again took 1st place with Shamal Sequel taking 3rd. Of course we all knew papillons had brains as well as beauty and it is nice to see them proving it.

News from some Open Shows at Okehampton & District Canine Society BOB and G2 went to Sanjupers Special Issue For Judaham.

Karen and Steve Maskell have been having a successful time lately. At Romford CS BPIB, PG1 and RBIS went to their Kazkell Starlight Dream. Then at the Newton Aycliffe Show she took BPIB and PG2 in the morning and in the afternoon went Best Bitch Puppy in Show at the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club. Along with her litter brother, Kazkell Just Dreamin at Lozek, about whom I recently reported some success, she has certainly been having a good run and at the recent UK Toys Champ Show each took a 2nd in their respective Minor Puppy Classes. Being the other side of the table Karen judged a number of toy breeds at Bodmin and her BOB, Cofton Tickle Me Fancy at Chipapom took G1 and RBIS

An error in the Notes reporting on Crufts, not mine I am pleased to say but Dog World's, in the printed report it says "Of the four CC's three went to overseas dogs" and some of you may have been confused as to why we had four CC's on offer. In fact what I actually wrote was "Of the four 'Green Cards' three went to overseas dogs"

Our Dogs

UK Toydog Championship Show was held recently at Stafford with Mrs E Cochrane judging the dogs and Mrs Pat Munn the bitches, between them they drew an entry of 220 dogs making 211 entries, the results were as follows:

Bitch CC and BOB:  Mrs ABELOOS-DEVOS, Mr ROOSENS & Mr TOIVANEN Ch Connection Tri Symphony, Res Bitch CC: Mrs I & Mr G ROBB Ch Gleniren Scarlet Signature, Dog CC Ms. C LEES Bodebi Ray of Success at Lafford, Res Dog CC: Mr ROOSENS, Mrs ABELOOS-DEVOS & Mr TOIVANEN Siljans My Man, Best Puppy:  Miss A MASON Thoughts Of Stardom At Amsema, Best Veteran: Mr J P OLDING, Dr R B & MUNROE Gold Wings New Addition at Papplewick (Imp).

This gives Noriko as Tri Symphony is known her UK title subject to KC confirmation.
In the group under Albert Wight Noriko was short listed to the last 8 and in the Puppies many congratulations go to Miss A Mason for winning 4th Best Puppy in Show.

That means at every championship show this year so far,  Papillons have been placed in the group or puppy group. Juniors featured well in the results again and I hope I don’t miss anyone out; I really am trying to remember everyone’s name, In YKC handling 8-10 years I see Amelia Whipps took a very good second with Georgia Foote VHC, in 12-15 years Emma Peters took a 3rd, another young lady who should be very proud is Louisa Henry who won YKC handling class 16-18 years with Phimeen Polyanna and went on to great things in the obedience ring for which I have an article by Carol Hatch, Carols says “For the very first time, UK Toy dog  scheduled obedience classes for dogs from the Toy Group, we had a wonderful entry of 58 dogs with representatives from all but 7 of the toy breeds. Needless to say our versatile little Papillons were well represented. I must mention 2 in particular, Clare Butler with Tinklebury Dr No, who on his very first attempt at obedience competition achieved a creditable 2ND place in the largest class of the day: Pre-Beginners, it just goes to prove that brains and beauty can go together as Murphy also has a CC and reserve CC. The other Papillon (A Real star today) was Phineen Polyanna handled by Miss L A Henry, who won both the BEGINNER and the NOVICE classes and then with 2 other class winners, went on to give a creditable demonstration of obedience in the main ring prior to Best in Show. Well done to all concerned.” In the stakes classes Mrs I & Mr G ROBB Sunshoo Imatrade Secret NAF TAF, having her first show outing won the huge Minor Puppy Bitch class of 24 and then won Best Puppy Bitch, she also went on to win the Minor Puppy Stakes Class under Mr Brian Mitchell and became the Overall Runner Up Puppy Stakes winner.

Graham Fitch mailed me to say there was a mix up with the ring number of his wife, Carols dog and for those with catalogues her bitch No 1626 was placed third in PGB and not 1628 as recorded at the time, Higham Press and UK Toy have since rectified this.

Sadly it appears another error took place, the Reserve Dog CC winner at UK Toy may have been ineligible to show in the Graduate class because he has won several CACs overseas. This is not the only eligibility error this year for overseas dogs and I have tried on Papnet to point out the correct procedure for counting wins prior to entering a class: basically any award that counts towards a Champion title in any recognised country, be it a CAC, CACIB, a 5point Green Star, WinnersDog/Bitch (majors) these must all for the purpose of entering UK shows be counted as a CC. If on arriving at the show you realise there has been an error, then immediately go to the Secretary of the show and have your dog transferred to a class for which it is eligible, failure to do this contravenes KC regulations and will lead to disqualification.

Steve Maskell tells me, Karens puppy, Kazkell Starlight Dream went to Retford Open show the day following UK Toy and won through to PG1 and RBPIS well done to her and to her litter brother Helen Smiths, Kazkell Just Dreaming of Lozek, both puppies won 2nd in the large MP classes at UK Toy.

Locally Pat Beadle had a good day at Horsham Open show with Bodebi Success Story for Bedellus (litter brother to UK Toy DCC winner) who won BOB and group 1 this win gave Rooney as he is known enough points for his ShCM title, Rooneys son Bedellus Billy Whizz was BP and PG3 very well done.

I have just heard from Wendy Hill that Hazel Fairall has been admitted to Gloucester Royal Hospital, no details at present but Im sure Hazel would appreciate a card to wish her well.

I am sure everyone was as shocked as I was to hear of the sudden passing of Gary Turner. Gary along with his brother John was well known in a number of other breeds as well as our own and had added papillons to his interests some years ago. They made up their first champion in the breed at the 2004 Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club show taking BIS at the same time with Ch Kingshaven Truly Scrummy For Bodebi. Gary was a colourful character, not only in outfits, and I am sure many of us enjoyed his and John's appearance on the recent BBC Crufts coverage. It seems impossible to believe that so quickly and at such a young age we should lose him and our condolences and thoughts go to John and the rest of the family at this very sad time. The funeral will take place on Thursday 13th April at Lincoln Crematorium and John has requested that everyone wear 'happy colours' rather than black as this would most certainly reflect Gary's own life.

Sadly before this news came in I was about to report on John and Gary's success at the Bridgford & District Canine Show on Saturday with their Bodebi Rhythm is a Dancer who went Best A.V.N.S.C Puppy then won the Puppy Toy Group and finished the day going BPIS along with that of his older half brother Bodebi Success Story for Bedellus owned by Patricia Beadle who BOB and G1 at Horsham Open Show on the 23 March while Success Story's son Bedellus Billy Whizz was BP and PG3.

I have only the briefest news of the South Wales Papillon Club Open Show where BIS went to Sue Stanbury's Inixia Gigalo.

Our Dogs

It is with great sadness I have to report the death of Gary Turner (Bodebi Papillons). Gary was such a colourful personality in the breed, he always found time to stop and have a chat with everyone, Gary will, im sure be fondly remembered. To his brother John and his family we send our sincere condolences. I only recently spoke with Gary who was so proud of his young puppy Bodebi Rhythm is a Dancer who had produced so many good results, they had just returned home from Bridgeford & Dist.Open show winning PG1 and went on to BPIS.

Dropping in on Ardingly this week for Tunbridge Wells Open show, it was good to see a nice entry of Papillons for Eddie Bishop (our steward from Crufts this year). Viv and Kevin Butlers granddaughter Sophie, very professionally handled Lucindale Forget Me Not of Aristopaps to BOB and later, G4 with Helen Smiths Kazkell Just Dreaming of Lozak continuing his winning ways going BPIB and PG4. Sophie, who is only nine years old made a very good account of herself in the Junior Handling class coming 4th out of 13 so very well done to her.

Down in Wales, Queenie Bruce was judging the Open Show for the South Wales Papillon Club and the winners were: BD and BIS Inixia Dreams Magic ( Mesdames M&S Unwin and Stanbury) RBD Inixia Crown Jewel (Mrs S. Stanbury) BB and RBIS Ibstock Tululah of Spinillons (Mrs J.Davidson-Poston) RBB Amicae Spirit of Ansema ( Miss A.Mason) BPIS Thoughts of Stardom at Ansema (Miss A. Mason) the club AGM took place after the show and I shall pass on the results of the judges ballot etc. when I receive them.

It hardly seems possible Easter is upon us, show schedules are coming in fast and furiously, please continue to send in your Open show results, I hope you all have a restful Easter.

I understand there was a very large attendance at the funeral of Gary Turner and as well as many people from the various breeds Gary was known in there were also a lot of youngsters from the Hairdressing profession whom Gary had taught. I am sure everyone read the wonderful obituary by Toni Teasdale in Dog World which summed up Gary so well.

At the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Championship Show Dog CC and BIS went, for the second year running, to Carine Rutten's wonderful Multi Ch Antony. Bitch CC and BOS went to Pauline Wilson's Invergarick Modern Milly, I think this may be her first CC, Reserves went to Irene and Glenn Robb's Dk.Nor. Ch Gleniren Premier League Sunshoo in dogs and in bitches to their Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses. BPIS went to Anna McKnight's Daneview Dainty Indiana. I am sure it was pleasing for everyone to see RBPIS going to Bodebi Rhythm Is A Dancer owned and bred of course by John Turner and his late brother Gary if a little sad that Gary was not there to see this.

For those who like to know what is going on elsewhere on the Papillon World at the prestigious Sydney Royal Dog CC and BOB went to Sharon and Don Mahoney's very well known phalene Aus Ch Caspians For Pleasure, I believe the first time a phalene has taken this award, but then Mulle, as For Pleasure is known, is no 'ordinary' phalene such has been his success in Australia. Bitch CC went to  Aus Ch. Kyryndaley Ivory Pearl owned by J R & C M Hunt. Reserves went in dogs to Aus Ch Caspians Terminator, owned jointly by Sharon and Don and Kirsty Lewis and in bitches to Mrs T L Goulding's Ukillion Avaska. A week or so alter at the NSW Papillon Club Championship Show Alan Bendalow from the UK judged an entry of 89 papillons. Dog CC and BIS went to Aus Ch Caspians Terminator with Bitch CC and RBIS going to Lynne Spooners' Aus Ch Sandrinas Kottens Pearl. Reserves went to Rebecca Grabham's Aus Ch Welona Hot N Fiery in dogs and in bitches to Chris Johns' Aus Ch Basilika Pink Lady

At the International Show in Leeuwarde, Holland Austrene Academy Award owned by Carine Rutten and bred by Marion Sloan got his fourth CAC thus giving him his Dutch Title. This phalene boy was sired by Austrene Imelectric out of UKCh.,Ir.Ch. Sunshoo Imamovie Premiere

At the Combined Canine International Show in Ireland GSB, Bitch CACIB and BOB went to Dolly Kavanagh's Lindendale Lass for Serenglade, GSD to Dolly's Serenglade Special Design for Denemore, Dog CACIB to Sue Belshaw's Belvisaj Simply Charming, RGSD to Diane Mooney's Omaonaig Storm Bird, RGSB & Res bitch CACIB to Marion Sloan's Int, Ir & UK Ch Sunshoo I'm A Movie Premiere and .Res dog CACIB to Marion's - Ch Austrene I'm Electric. I hope these results are correct as I understand that there was some confusion with the placings and that the judge from Japan actually awarded two RGS in bitches as Diane's Conysluck Magic Flute was apparently also given this award. Also from Ireland I hear that Diane's Ir Ch & Int Ch Omaonaig Flame Of Tara was the Annual Ch 2005 which means she was top winning pap in Ireland last year.

I was sorry to hear from Deirdre that Caroline Woods Cox had lost Carasweet Lovesome Teddy suddenly at an early age, he would have been seven next month. Bred by Caroline he had a successful show career in the UK and in Ireland, one of his early successes being BPIS at the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Championship Show in 2000.His show career was brought to a close in 2002/2003 by the outbreak of foot and mouth disease and the death of Caroline's husband, Rory. Teddy was in fact the model for the "Autumn" and "Winter" papillon bookmarks produced for the CISPAP and I know Caroline, who was such a great supporter of that venture, was delighted by this.

Phil Shirley, Secretary of the South of England Papillon Club has kindly sent me some news of the Club's recent AGM and Charity Walk. He writes "The South of England Papillon Club held its AGM on Easter Saturday. Prior to the AGM the annual “Papillons Walk for Charity” took place followed by a brief video presentation from Sandy Mathieson from Dogs for the Disabled, the charity that was being supported this year. I am thrilled to announce so far over £700 has been collected for this very worthy charity and watching the video after the walk, it was simply amazing to see how these dogs can be trained to help and add so much quality to peoples lives. The club is still accepting donations and will present the Charity with the final amount at their Fun Day in July. There was an Easter Egg and Dog Bone hunt before lunch, the assembled children, dogs and adults alike didn’t leave a stone unturned to retrieve the goodies.

Three members of the committee stood down this year Debbie Deuchar, Sue Stanbury and Carol Wilson; all three were thanked for their services to the club. The committee elected for this year were as follows: Officers:  Chairman: Mrs P Peacock, Vice Chairman: Mr I Chandler, Hon. Secretary: Mr P Shirley, Hon. Assistant Secretary: Mrs A Borg, Hon. Treasurer: Mr I Dack, Committee: Mrs J Casey, Mrs J Chandler, Lt.Cdr. B.Cox RN, Mrs P Cox, Mrs R Dack, Mrs S Langdon, Mrs M Melvin, Mrs P Munn, Mr A Pearch, Mrs N Spencer, Ms M Unwin, Mrs D Welsh."  Congratulations to the Club on yeti another successful Charity Walk, the amount this Club has raised for various charities over the years is really outstanding, their efforts do much to counter some of the anti dog publicity we read about. I am sure the sum will increase even further at the Fun Day and of course folk can still make donations for this very worthwhile cause, just contact Phil direct. Anyone interested in seeing photos of this event can view them on the Club's web site at http://www.southpapclub.co.uk/ just follow the link to Photos of Past Events

The Championship show of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club was very well attended this year, with plenty of stalls to help make the most of a not very exciting building. The club tables with the awards, admin. etc. were set between the two rings making a good focal point.

The Judges David Abbott (dogs) and Jenny Scovell (bitches) had drawn a good entry of 121/134 and 137/158 respectively. Winners were Dog CC & BIS - Multi Ch Anthony (Carine Rutten) Res Dog CC & RBIS - Dk.Nor. Ch Gleniren Premier League Sunshoo (I &G Robb& C&D Roe) Bitch CC & BOS- Invergarick Modern Milly (Pauline Wilson) Res Bitch CC - Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses (I & G Robb) Best Puppy In Show - Daneview Dainty Indiana (Anna McKnight) Res Best Puppy In Show - Bodebi Rhythm Is A Dancer (John and the late Gary Turner) Best Phalene Tawzan Eva Ellane (Anne & Stan Stevens) Best Veteran Ch Serenglade Sebastian at Temelora (Sue Morrell & Thes Teague) Best Special Beginners Blairancoes Merrygoround of Delphlands (Miss M Moss)Best Fringed in Show Tawzan Fun And Fancy Free ( Anne & Stan Stevens).

JHA 6 - 11 years 1st Amelia Whipps, 2nd Rebecca Thompson, 3rd Georgia Foote, 4th Reese Hine,5th Zoe Bradford,JHA 12 - 16 years 1st Clare Butler  Best Junior Handler In Show,2nd Amy Mason,3rd Vikki Loader,4th Francessa McWade,5th Jodie Turner.

Carine Rutten was hugely proud Ch. Antony took BIS for the second year running, the RBIS  (on the referees decision) Dk.Nor. Ch Gleniren Premier League Sunshoo was returning to these shores after his winning ways in Scandinavia.

The Juniors turned out in force for the Junior Handler of the Year awards presented and organised by Irene Robb, (I gave the winners names recently) I am sure all the clubs, the juniors and the parents alike will want to thank Irene for all the work she has put into running this event and the encouragement she gives to the juniors which from the turnout and handling skills on display speaks volumes.

The Clubs annual points trophies were presented and this year a clean sweep went to the Gleniren / Sunshoo Kennels, certainly the first time in club history where two kennels working in close partnership have been so successful across the board.

Some good Open show results have also been forthcoming: at Duntstable and Dist. open show, Jo Davidson-Poston took BOB and G1 with her and Sue Deamers, Bankshill Isle of Lewis. Pearl Peacock returned home somewhat richer from the Exonian show with Ch Alcala Ringleader taking best veteran in show and winning £30 to boot! Pat Beadles dogs continue to do well, at Crystal Palace Bodebi Success Story for Bedellus ShCM taking BOB and the Toy Group and his son Bedellus Billy Whizz taking BP and PG2.

Gary Turners funeral took place at Lincoln on the 13th April, Gary had a very good send off by all accounts, with over 200 people attending, with many from Papillons and the other breeds the brothers showed. A buffet was laid on at Newark and most people went there after the funeral to raise a glass in Gary’s memory. The replacement judge for the South West Toydog open show will be Eileen Roberts following the death of Gary Turner who was scheduled to judge this event.

News from overseas tells me at the International Show at Leeuwarde in the Netherlands, Austrene Academy Award (Elwood), bred by Marian Sloan, Dam UK Ch.,Ir.Ch. Sunshoo Imamovie Premiere (Maxine Moth) Sire Austrene Imelectric, who was exported to the Ups and Downs Kennels of Carine Rutten has won his 4th CAC under judge Mrs.Elsbeth Clerc from Switzerland and is now Dutch Champion.
