Eileen Roberts had a successful time at the East Midland Dog of the Year competition. This prestigious event always draws a good entry and involves a number of Societies in the East Midland area. Her Rayol Aristotles took Best Adult in some very good company.
Another notable recent win was that of Jo Davidson Poston's Bankshill Isle of Lewis Sh CM& who at his first show with Jo, Dunstable and District CS, took BOB and Group 1. He also won the large Open Stakes.
With all the worries at the moment about dog theft warning of another ploy being used by the unscrupulous people involved recently appeared on Papnet, cross posted by Graham Fitch from another Breed list, & and it would seem sensible to give this further coverage. The owner of a 6 month old puppy was walking her dog on her own not far from her home when a car went past slowly on the other side of the road, the occupants (man and woman) looking very interestedly at her and the pup. The car was turned around and came back driving slowly next to her. The occupants admired the pup then started intimating that it was not hers, saying they had lost one recently and it looked just like theirs. They started being quite intimidating. The owner sensibly, realising they were probably hoping she would head for home so they could see where she lived, carried on and went into the first shop she came to. The people in the car stopped and still continued saying the pup wasn't hers so the owner called the police from inside the shop. The Police duly arrived and sent the people on their way....afterwards telling the owner that they knew who the people were and that they were gypsies/travellers.
It seems this is a new ploy aimed at intimidating the owner and making them head for home so that these people can find out where the dog lives and return later. So please be careful, if you are suspicious about anyone when you are walking your dog make sure they do not follow you home and if in doubt call the police. Perhaps if more do then the police will do more than just send them on their way. This really is an appalling situation where folk have to live in fear of even taking their dogs out for exercise or letting them play in the garden and perhaps we all ought to be a little more proactive in trying to do something about it, it can as we all know happen to any of us. There is a very useful site on the web at http://www.dogtheftaction.com/ supported by a number of high profile canine organisations including the Kennel Club. Dogs Trust and Dog World itself and on this site you can download sample letters to send expressing your support for their aims to your MP, local Chief Constable etc. The site also gives help as to where to find the addresses to which you should write etc. Of course it would be easier to sit back and do nothing but surely better to try and so something to stop this than to find yourself a victim.
At the Cork and DCC Champ Show in Ireland GSB and BOB went to Dolly Kavanagh's Denemore Cameo Reflection, GSD to Marion Sloan's Ch Austrene I'm Electric, RGSB to Marion's Austrene Hollywood Calling Carasweet and RGSD to Dolly's Serenglade Special Design for Denemore |

I had a call from John Turner this week, he had just returned from Birmingham Toydog Open Show where his puppy Bodebi Rhythm is a Dancer won BP and BOB under Queenie Bruce, he later went on to win BPIS, very well done. John told me he was quite overwhelmed with the number of messages, cards, flowers and calls following Garys death, he would like me to convey through the notes, his sincere thanks to everyone, your messages have helped him through a very difficult time.
From Ireland, news of the Combined Canine International Show: BOB, GSB & CACIB - Lindendale Lass for Serenglade RGS & R CACIB - INT, IR & GB CH Sunshoo I'm A Movie Premiere, GSD - Serenglade Special Design for Denemore, Dog CACIB - Belvisaj Simply Charming, R.CACIB - Ch Austrene I'm Electric, RDGS Omaonaig Storm Bird, Best Puppy - Serenglade Special Design for Denemore, Best Veteran - INT, IR & GB CH Sunshoo I'm A Movie Premiere.
Diane Mooney tells me her young Reserve GS winner was a Phalene puppy at his first show, also her Ire.Ch , Int Ch Omaonaig Flame of Tara was Irish annual Champion 2005 which makes her the top winning papillon last season.
At Cork and DCC CH Show: BOB & GSB - Denemore Cameo Reflection, RGSB - Austrene Hollywood Calling Carasweet,GSD - Ch Austrene I'm Electric,RGSD - Serenglade Special Design for Denemore.
Staying overseas, news of two British bred Papillons gaining their American Championship Titles. At the Heartland Dog Club of Florida show, Fin CH. Kingshaven Upper Crust bred by Jean and Roger Banfield completed his Am. Championship by winning the Open dog class taking Winners Dog for a 4 point major. He then went on to win Best of Breed over three Champions thus earning a 5-point major win. At the
Bee Hive cluster in Beeville, Texas, Nouveau Spot On bred by Mike Foster and Mark Billinghurst took winners dog and best of winners gaining his final two points to finish his championship.
Graham Fitch posted this warning on papnet about a very worrying experience a lady in another breed had recently: She was walking her 6 month old pup on her own not far from her home in Darwen (Lancs) when a car went past slowly on the other side of the road, the occupants (man and woman) looking very interestedly at her and pup. The car turned around and came back driving slowly next to her. The occupants admired the pup then started intimating that it was not hers, saying they had lost one recently and it looked just like theirs. They started being quite intimidating. So sensibly, realising they were probably hoping she would head for home so they could see where she lived, she carried on and went into the first shop she came to. They stopped and continued saying the pup wasn't hers (he is tattooed so they wouldn't have a leg to stand on) so she called the police from inside the shop. Police duly arrived and sent them on their way.... afterwards telling her that they knew who they were.... gypsies/travellers. This seems like a new ploy to find where dogs live for future 'napping' so be careful folks.
With WELKS kicking off this week it is the start of the outdoor show season so I do hope the weather is good to us this year. I see there is a reasonable entry of 129 /135 for Brenda Taylor, Pugs have pushed us down to third place in entry numbers in the toy group with their entry of 144. This is worrying when you look at Bournemouth Ch Show this year and see the Papillon judge will also judge Pugs, I can just imagine the bun fight around that ring! Why is this happening? Surely no judge needs to judge two of the strongest entries in one group, I am sure exhibitors would prefer a leisurely day rather than have a judge under pressure to get through two large entries. |

At WELKS Dog CC and BOB went to Jenny Scovell's Ch Caswelll Classic Tri, Bitch CC to Irene and Glen Robb's Ch Gleniren Scarlet Signature, Reserve Dog CC to Roger Banfield's Ch & Int Ch Queen Bless JP Red Ideal and Reserve Bitch CC to Pauline Wilson's Invergarick Modern Milly. Best Puppy was John Turner's Bobedi Rhythm Is A Dancer.
News from Ireland where at the Fermoy & DCC Show GSD and BOB went to Dolly Kavanagh's Serenglade Special Design For Denemore, GSB to Diane Mooney's Conysluck Magic Flute, RGSD to Diane's Omaonaig Grey Swallow and RGSB to Dolly's Denemore Cameo Reflection.Interestingly the two CC winners were the first and second in the Puppy Class.
At the South Tipperary Show the results were GSD & BOB Serenglade Special Design for Denemore, GSB Denemore Cameo Reflection, RGSD Omaonaig Grey Swallow and RGSB Conysluck Magic Flute.
It seems more and more care needs to be exercised in looking after your dogs. Following the warning passed on last week I hear that at an Agility Show in Newbury recently an attempt was made to steal one exhibitor's puppy, fortunately it was prevented. Only a couple of weeks earlier the same exhibitor had had her caravan stolen from a forestry site on the New Forest, both locks had been removed and whilst the caravan is replaceable through insurance much of the contents were not. Included amongst the thing taken were Eukanuba and World Agility jackets, some things cannot be replaced, thank goodness there were no dogs in the caravan at the time. It cannot be stressed enough these days you cannot afford to leave your dogs unattended for a second. I understand in Ireland they have for some time had to be extremely careful as the breed is targeted by travellers, it seems we are now facing similar problems over here. Val McGivern made a very good point on this matter suggesting that perhaps the time has come when it would be more sensible not to advertise the fact that one's car is carrying show dogs and stop plastering the screens with CC stickers. I wonder whether such things would have happened so easily in the old days when we were benched, we all knew one another well when we were regularly benched together and any stranger was quickly spotted. Please be extremely watchful, if in doubt call the police or a show official, it's too late afterwards to wish you had done something.
Karen and Steve Maskell had a super May Bank Holiday weekend at three different shows, all on May 1st, with three puppies from the same litter. At the Bedford & District CS Open Show Kazkell Starlight Dream took BP, PG1 & RBPIS, at the Chelmsford & District Open Show Kazkell I Ching for Leighroy took BP & PG2 and at the South East England Show Open Show Kazkell Just Dreaming at Lozek took BP & PG3. Quite an achievement. |
| Our Dogs |
Some very nice news from Steve Maskell about three litter mates all taking good results at different shows on the same day: At Bedford, Karens, Kazkell Starlight Dream took the puppy group and went on to RBPIS, at Chelmford: Kazkell I Ching (Mr & Mrs Back) took BP and PG2 and at South of England A.S : Kazkell Just Dreaming at Lozek
( H Smith) was BP RBOB and PG3. When I recently reported Bankshill Isle of Lewis, groupwin at Dunstable, I should have also mentioned he won a very large Open stakes class.
Thanks to Eilish Neally for these results for across the water in Ireland: at
Fermoy & DCC 31st Annual Championship Show, Judge: Mr. J. Fothergill (UK)
BOB & GSD - Serenglade Special Design for Denemore, RGSD - Omaonaig Fire Bird,
GSB - Conysluck Magic Flute, RGSB - Denemore Cameo Reflection, and at South Tipperary Ch. Show, Judge : Mr Philip Behan (Ireland). BOB & GSD - Serenglade Special Design for Denemoore, RGSD - Omaonaig Grey Swallow, GSB - Denemore Cameo Reflection, RGSB - Conysluck Magic Flute.
At Welks Ch. Show the judging took place outdoors and some have commented on how cold it was, I guess at any show you need to take several layers with you as a large entry of Papillons always means a lot of sitting around ringside. Brenda Taylor judged and the results were: DCC and BOB Ch.Caswell Classic Tri (Mrs J Scovell), RDCC Ch/Int Ch. Queen Bless Jp Red Ideal(imp Jpn) (Mr R Banfield), BCC Ch. Gleniren Scarlet Signature (Mrs I and Mr G Robb, RBCC Invergarick Modern Milly JW (Mrs P Wilson), Best Puppy Bodebi Rhythm is a Dancer ( Mr J and the late Mr G Turner).
I smiled when I read Denise Welsh had to bring Harlie (the magnificent) out of retirement recently at an agility competition, she was furious the other dogs were taking part but not her, so Denise entered Harlie in a jumping class, and ofcourse, she flew round taking 1st place 5 seconds ahead of the nearest competition, you just cant keep a good dog down, still with agility, I hear Margy Wigan has been whizzing round the agility circuits, Margy, never one to blow her own trumpet has been doing well and perhaps someone would like to tell me of her dogs achievements, on the obedience front Louisa Henry who had success with her dog at UK Toy this year, recently took her to Ripon open obedience show where she won the Ob beginners round and even beat a collie with a run off for first place.
The latest gazetted judges from the Kennel Gazette for 2007: City of Birmingham:
Mr P Taylor, LKA: Mr R Sansom, UK Toydog: Mrs B Moen (Norway) Dogs and Mr S Carroll (Ireland) Bitches.
It would be good to hear some news from north of the border; also any exciting open show wins in Wales. Perhaps you are all too shy?
The notes are here for everyone in the breed, and breed club secretaries are encouraged to let me have their club news. |

Very little news around at the moment other than overseas news.
The Papillon Club of America Specialty was held recently, this year the location was California. BOB, BOW and WD went to Domino's Once In A Blue Moon owned by Cynthia Pera and bred by Leona Domino & Laura Temperato, BOS was CH Guldtassen's Paradizio bred in Sweden by Annette Hissing Aulik and owned by Jerrilin Naylor, WB was TopFlite Toast Of The Town owned by Joanie Carl & Sandra Schumacher and bred by Sandy, RWD went to LDR Dear Caught You Looking. owned and bred by Diana Moreland and RWB to Denzel Aim For The Stars owned by Susan Pollard and bred by Tracy Burdick. I have not heard of any successes for English bred papillons there other than Marichin Rosenstein who only took a 10 month old puppy with her to the show and gained a creditable 3rd in a large Puppy Bitch Class. This was with her home bred Marichin La Aristocratica who is all English breeding being by AM Ch Nouveau Less is More out of Powdermill Looking Good For Nouveau. Mark and I were pleased to hear from Marichin that Nouveau Spot On had gained his US Title, he is half brother to Marichin's other two US Nouveau Champions, Less Is More and his sister Texas Lady.
I understand that during the four or five days of activity at the Specialty there was an unofficial match purely for phalenes which was judged by Sharon Mahoney of the Mondelise Kennels in Australia. There were I understand some 14 phalenes present. I am afraid I don't have details of the winners. I understand that the phalene fanciers in the US hope to make this a regular feature of the Specialty and are also endeavouring to get some split classes, although I would imagine they will need to ensure that the numbers present continue to grow.
The same weekend in Germany was the Europasieger Show where there was an entry of 34 Papillons and 8 Phalenes. In Papillons BOB, Eurapasieger 2006, Best Male, VDH CAC, Club CAC and CACIB went to Carine Rutten's Ch. Up and Down's Frederike, and BOS, Europasiegerin 2006, Best Bitch, VDH CAC, Club CAC and CACIB to Fransien van Linder van Hoeij's Ch. Lamonia's Jersey. In Phalènes BOB, Europasieger 2006, Best Male, VDH CAC, Club CAC and CACIB was Steffi Hartel's Ch.Eclairs Elvis and BOS Europasiegerin 2006, Best Bitch, VDH CAC, Club CAC and CACIB was Carine's Djacinta Di Papalino. |

I was sorry to hear Peter Hancocks is quite poorly in Hospital, Peter was until recently the show manager of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club, I am sure he would appreciate a card from friends in the Papillon world.
At Birmingham National, Carole Hatch judged the breed and the results were Dog CC & BOB :Ms C. P LEES Bodebi Ray Of Success At Lafford, Res Dog CC: Mrs P BEADLE Bodebi Success Story For Bedellus, Bitch CC : Mrs I & Mr G ROBB Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses, Res Bitch CC :Mrs E COCHRANE Tijuana Victoria, Best Puppy : Miss E VICTOR, Mr I & Mrs S & McLAUGHLIN: Pinelan Play It Again Sam. Interesting result in that the DCC and RCC are litter brothers, a second CC for Ray of Success and a first RCC for Success Story , quite a “successful” litter!
The Papillon Club of America held their speciality last weekend in Irvine, California, the main results (as yet unconfirmed) : WD/BOW/BOB Dominos Once in a Lifetime, BOS Ch. Guldtasens Paradizio, WB Top Flight Toast of the Town, BP LDR Dear Caught you Looking, B.Veteran Ch. Loteki Beach Party,B. Phalene Lone Tree’s Myways French Crown.
Talking to Margy Wigan this week I managed to check on her dogs Agility performances, at the UK Agility Show recently they schedule various “games “ courses along with the regular jumps and speed rounds, one of the games is called “Snooker”: certain targets are “red” balls and others are the colours, you have to contact the red before moving on to a colour as in snooker. Well Margy and Fern set off like a bat out of hell and won 47 points out of a total of 51 taking first place, they then moved on to “Gamblers” a game course set over obstacles where you have to reach the final sequence in time to take the Gamble and complete the course in the fastest time, again Margy and Fern won this event, so very well done to them. Margy tells me she plans her routes to amass a good number of points while taking the shortest route and thus saving on the leg work.
Papillons seem to really take to Agility and now I believe the height of the minis has been lowered they stand an even better chance without the longer legged dogs competing with them. For anyone interested in taking up agility, Denise Welsh will be giving a presentation on Agility for newcomers as one of the topics at the Papillon Education Day of the South of England Papillon Club in October. The Club which holds an Agility “have a go” course at their Fun Day each year plans to schedule a K.C. Licensed Limited Agility show next year, so now is the time to start training your dogs.
I was speaking to Alan Pearch who is presently fostering a lovely veteran Papillon that belongs to Peter Rolt, Peter is the cousin of Clarice Ward and last year I collected signatures at a show on a birthday card to send to him for his 100th Birthday. Peter has not been too well recently and had a spell in hospital, I now hear he is returning home this weekend. I am sure he may like to hear from some of the “old crowd”, certainly at 101 he is a good example of dogs keeping you young.

I am sorry to have to report that Peter Hancocks passed away on 12 May. Peter had apparently been in hospital for the past three weeks and it is a pity that no one let me know as I could have passed the information along, I am sure Peters friends would have liked to have sent cards or good wishes, Peter had retired from his position as Show Manager due to ill health. The funeral will take place on Thursday 25th May at 11 am. at The South Chapel, Oakley Wood Crematorium situated just south of Bishops Tachbrook near to junction 13 of the M40. No Flowers by request. Donations can be made to The British Heart Foundation and sent to: Goodwin's Funeral Directors, 38 Coventry Street, Southam, CV47 0EP.
I have been asked to mention the following by the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club. "It is with regret that we have lost the services of the Chairman, Roger Banfield, who has stood down due to personal family commitments as he felt he could not give the time needed to the Club. He has worked extremely hard over the last year since taking up the post in 2005. The Committee thank him most sincerely for the work, time and effort he has put in during the past year and he will be sorely missed. The Committee send their best wishes to him and it is hoped that his mother soon regains her health. In the mean time the Vice Chairman, Mrs B Wood-Davis will take over as Acting Chairman for the rest of the year." I am sure many of us will be sorry to hear this and equally I am sure the Club will miss Roger's guiding influence. It certainly adds to the burdens of Bubbles who now has to take on these duties alongside her others as President, Vice Chairman and Acting Benevolent Fund Administrator
At Birmingham City Dog CC and BOB went to Ms C P Lees' Bodebi Ray Of Success At Lafford bred of course by John Turner and his late brother Gary, Bitch CC was Irene and Glen Robb's Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses, Res Dog CC Pat Beadle's Bodebi Success Story For Bedellus (litter brother to the CC Winner) and Res Bitch CC to Elizabeth Cochrane's Tijuana Victoria. BP was Sue and Ian Victor's and Emma McLaughlin's Pinelan Play It Again Sam
I understand that the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club has had little response yet from members to the suggested Rescue Guidelines referred to in the last Newsletter. Members were asked to let the committee have their views and it seems that whilst some views have been expressed on Papnet as this is not an 'official' list for the club the views expressed there will not be taken into consideration. If you do have views on the suggested guidelines or anything at all to do with Rescue do let the committee know so that your views can be taken into consideration, so make sure you send them direct to the Secretary. |

It is with great sadness I have to report the death of Peter Hancocks. Peter had been seriously ill in hospital for the last few weeks. Until recently, Peter was the Show manager for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club, I shall miss him a lot, he was always ready for a chat and I must say I did appreciate his wicked sense of humour. The Funeral is to take place on Thursday 25th May at 11 am. at The South Chapel,Oakley Wood Crematorium (The Crematorium is situated just south of Bishops Tachbrook near to junction 13 of the M40.) No Flowers by request. Donations made out to The British Heart Foundation and sent to: Goodwin's Funeral Director, 38 Coventry Street, Southam
CV47 0EP. To Carina I am sure we all send our deepest sympathy.
A reminder to anyone that may like to comment on or send in suggestions with reference to the Parent Clubs Rescue guidelines, the club needs to have these by June to enable the committee to formulate an acceptable set of guidelines. Please write or e-mail to the Secretary Mrs C Allwood-Chebsey, suggestions and ideas posted on Papnet are not taken forward to committee; you need to write to the secretary individually.
The secretary of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club asked me to print the following:
“Would you please kindly mention the passing of Peter Hancocks, our recent Show Manager, who had to give up the position due to his ill health and who had been in hospital for the last 3 weeks. As soon as I have the details of the funeral I will pass them on. The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Officers and Committee offer their sincere condolences to Carina at this sad time. We were all praying he would pull through, but alas it was not to be”
Carolyne also sent this for your information “It is with regret that we have lost the services of the Chairman, Roger Banfield, who has stood down due to personal family commitments as he felt he could not give the time needed to the Club. He has worked extremely hard over the last year since taking up the post in 2005. The Committee thank him most sincerely for the work, time and effort he has put in during the past year and he will be sorely missed. The Committee send their best wishes to him and it is hoped that his mother soon regains her health. In the mean time the Vice Chairman, Mrs B Wood-Davis will take over as Acting Chairman for the rest of the year”
Entries for the Open Show of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club close shortly, this year the show will be judged by Mr Vesa Toivanen (Finland) Mr Toivanen is the breeder and joint owner of this years Crufts B.O.B. I had hoped to give you some details of his judging experience but the Secretary strangely has been unable to provide me with any details, normally we have a C.V. of overseas judges who do not appear on our judges lists. The benevolent and JHA classes will be judged by Emma McLaughlin (Farleysbane) Emma for many years a successful Junior Handler herself, more recently taking top honours in the show ring. From the trophy steward Sue Victor comes the following: “Just a quick reminder for anyone who won a trophy at the Pap Club Open show February 2005 - please ensure that these are returned (polished and sparkly please) in time for the forthcoming Open Show on 10th June 2006. For anyone who will not be able to be at the show, I will be at both Bath and Southern Counties Ch shows in the next couple of weeks and will be pleased to collect them from you there.”
Denise Welsh very kindly sent me some agility news, at “All About Dogs” the UK Agility club held an agility show in conjunction with the event.
Angie Tydeman did very well with her rescue Papillon: Tio ( Tio was last years winner of the “Harley The Magnificent” Trophy) with a 2nd in agility and 3rd in jumping on the Sat and 2nd in agility and 1st in the Snooker class on Sunday. Her young dog Ice: (Kazim Ice is Nice) came 1st in the agility, 1st in Gamblers and 3rd in agility on Sunday, with the points he has gained he is now a Senior UK Agility dog. Angie also has a little rescue Papillon from the Blue Cross: Foxy, a 10" Papillon who gained a 1st place in Jumping, a very good weekend for Angie and her pap pack. Harlie (who returned from retirement a few weeks ago) managed to win a jumping class on Saturday and Denise’s 11yr old Papillon (Jadedoren Donatello) came 3rd in the steeplechase so a good weekend was had by all. Well done to everyone involved, im sure they must be some of the most fit Papillons and owners in the country.Denise tells me she has never seen so many Papillons competing, which is hugely encouraging.
In Scotland both Caitlin and Neil Leiper will be taking part in the Scottish Junior Handler of the Year competition, Caitlin is very disappointed she cannot handle the dog she qualified with: Graycaz Give It Up For Thello JW as he is unwell, she will be handling
Amicae Dot It who belongs to Mary Whitehill, Neil is also competing, handling an Afghan Hound, Neil won the competition overall last year. So good luck to them both.
Anyone who has a pet passport for their dog and would like to venture a little further: Clepnaco, the Belgian Papillon and Phalene club will hold their speciality on 24th September this year in Aalst which is close to Brussels. This will be the 5th year the show has been running but the first since the club achieved championship status so CACs will be on offer. The Judge will be Madame. L. de Ridder from Belgium, celebrating their first Championship show, they will be giving lots of trophies and every exhibitor will receive a set of engraved wine glasses. Entry forms can be obtained from the secretary:
Mr. J.Roosens clepnaco@papillons.be I have attended the last two shows and must say there is a very nice friendly atmosphere, during the lunch break they serve a really good Bar-B-Que. Aalst is about 2 hours drive from the Calais side of the channel tunnel. |
