At Windsor both Dog and Bitch CC winners were gaining their first CC's. In dogs it was Shirley Colyer and Sue Stanbury's Inixia Perfect Host For Shirando J.W. S.CM and in bitches Amy Mason's Amicae Spirit Of Amsema, Spirit went BOB. Amy also took BP with Thoughts Of Stardom At Amsema. Reserves went to Bankshill Isle of Lewis Sh.CM owned by Jo Davidson Poston and Sue Deamer in dogs and in bitches to Irene and Glenn Robb's Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses

Phil Shirley, Secretary of the South of England Papillon Club has kindly sent me a report of the Club's Summer Fun Day. He writes "On what must have been one of the hottest days of the year, The South of England Papillon Club held their Fun-day at Bradfield. As always there was tremendous support from the membership and there were many congratulatory comments at the end of the day. Not least for the wonderful buffet organised by Janet and Ian Chandler which contained everything from Roast Turkeys and Cold Cuts to Poached Salmon and Coronation Chicken with delicious salads and mouth-watering desserts in the form of pies, flans, pavlova and summer puddings. Along with the usual novelty classes, judged this year by Pam Bungard, there was a display of heelwork to music by Pauline Graystock who performed “ Tea for Two” to rapturous applause.
Three Papillons passed their Kennel Club Good Citizens Bronze Award.

The highlight of the day is always the fancy dress parade, which takes place at the end of the day while members are enjoying their Devon Cream Tea. There were some very clever and interesting costumes this year. The winner of the children's fancy dress was Jaz Spencer who came along dressed as a huge Red Rosette and the Adult winner was Len Stanbury who was dressed (or rather undressed)  this year as a Bay Watch Babe!……………..I know, the mind boggles. All the entrants received lovely tokens in the form of Illustrated Book Marks connected to Mike Foster and Deirdre Ashdown's recent publication of the Complete Illustrated Standard of the Papillon and Phalene, Deirdre Ashdown came along with her stall and very kindly donated these prizes, Mike also very generously donated a copy of the CISPAP to the raffle. Sophie Langdon did good business on her stall and also did some micro-chipping which is so important these days in light of the many recent thefts. The club stall, raffle, tombola and produce stall also produced some nice healthy funds for the club. The representative from Dogs For the Disabled attended to receive the clubs cheque for £863 being the amount raised at this years “Papillons Walk for Charity."

At the Bray Championship Show in Ireland Dolly Kavanagh's Serenglade Special Design for Denemore took the GSD, BOB, Toy Group 1 and went on to take BIS. Many congratulations to Dolly who has not been in the best of health over the last 12 months or so and of course to the breeder Linda Greenslade. Special Design is by Serenglade Sakime out of Snowlord La Bamba for Serenglade. GSB went to Dolly's Lindendale Lass for Serenglade, RGSD to Mrs Stone and Sue Stanbury's Inixia Perfect Poser and RGSB to Mrs Stones Parnassus Perfect Surprise

At the Irish Ladies Kennel Association GSD and BOB went to Mrs Pearson's Tedlyn Morning Star, RGSD to Dolly's Serenglade Special Design For Denemore, GSB to Dolly's Lindendale Lass for Serenglade and RGSB to Diane Mooney's Conysluck Magic Flute

Diane Mooney tells me an interesting topic of conversation came up recently at a show being whether stud dogs use should be more freely available for the good of the breed. Some while ago a well known judge of the breed took a dog around the ring and suggested to exhibitors that they ought to think about making use of him as he had the qualities many in the breed were lacking. The owner since has allowed others to use him and he has produced some nice winning stock, but since then one or two folk have said that perhaps the owner was unwise to let others use the dog as the offspring was now beating on occasions the owners dogs. As Diane says years ago it was quite common in Club Handbooks and catalogues etc to see stud fees alongside the dog's adverts and the well known kennels were perhaps less reluctant  than some these days to allow their dogs to be used.

What do readers think?? No doubt there will be some who will say that the best dogs should be made available for the good of the breed, and others who will say that having worked hard for years to build up a line they are reluctant to allow that line to be used by 'all and sundry'. I can see both sides of the argument, and I can understand the concerns of some to allow their dogs to be used. I am afraid these days stud owners do have to be very careful, more so than in years gone by, many have concerns about what should happen to any progeny and I am sure there are many of us who have been let down over the years with broken agreements etc.  And even the best dog cannot be expected to work miracles, some bitches, just as some dogs, simply are not good enough to be bred on from, so what does the stud dog owner do when a poor bitch is brought to him?? If the stud owner turns the bitch away she will presumably then go to a lesser dog, that in itself is not good for the breed but surely the stud owner cannot be responsible for other people's decisions. I suppose to some extent as well it is not in a breed's best interests if one dog is used too much, although there have been examples in the past when the numbers were far less than they are now where certain dogs have been used extensively and I can think of a couple of examples at least where such use has greatly helped the breed. The best I can say is that in an ideal world the best dogs would be available just as only good stock would be bred from, sadly we don't live in that ideal world, we muddle along as best we can. It would be interesting to hear other's views

I apologise for the lack of breed notes last week, as I set out for Windsor I realised I had not sent any through, heat stroke? or just plain forgetfulness Im not really sure.

Blackpool Ch, Show sounded a windy affair, but I think the worst was over by toy day. Mrs Betty Flavell judged Papillons and her winners were: DCC and BOB, CH CASWELL CLASSIC TRI (MRS J SCOVELL), RDCC, JAYLANJAY AMASMASHER (MRS J MACKAY), BCC, JAYLANJAY AMANOTHER (MRS J MACKAY), RBCC,  CH GLENIREN SCARLET SIGNATURE (MRS I & MR G ROBB), BPIB, SUNSHOO IMAKOOL KAT (MR D & MRS C ROE), Ch. Windsor was a beautifully hot day and luckily we were under the awning, which gave protection from the strong sun. Hazel Barr, down from Scotland judged the breed, her winners were: Bitch CC and BOB:  Miss A MASON Amicae Spirit Of Amsema, Res Bitch CC : Mrs I & Mr G ROBB Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses, Dog CC : Mrs S COLYER, Mrs S & STANBURY Inixia Perfect Host for Shirando JW Sh.CM, Res Dog CC :Mrs S DAVIDSON-POSTON, Mrs J & DEAMER Bankshill Isle of Lewis Sh.CM. Best Puppy : 2536 Miss A MASON Thoughts Of Stardom At Amsema.  I believe a first CC for both dog and bitch congratulations. Amy Mason at only 13 years of age, handled both the BOB and BP so professionally and was beaming from ear to ear with her success, Papillon juniors really are a talented lot.

Over at Bradfield the Sunday after Windsor, on what must have been one of the hottest days of the year, The South of England Papillon Club held their Fun-day. Pauline has promised to trail another routine for next year. Three Papillons passed their Kennel Club Good Citizens Bronze Award.

The highlight of the day is always the fancy dress parade, which takes place at the end of the day while members are enjoying their Devon Cream Tea. There were some very clever and interesting costumes this year. The winner of the children’s fancy dress was Jaz Spencer who came along dressed as a huge Red Rosette and the Adult winner was Len Stanbury who was dressed (or rather undressed) this year as a Bay Watch Babe! ……  I know, the mind boggles. I had been asked to include a notice of a Members Forum meeting of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club on the 30th July at Southam, I have since been asked by the Secretary of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club to pull this item, this meeting has been advertised on papnet and the club website, I have no further details but presume the meeting will now not be talking place, to avoid any confusion please check with the club.

Helen and Eric Broadhurst have asked that I let you know their new address: Sheil Hill,St. John`s Town of Dalry,Castle Douglas,DG7 3UD.

At South Wales it was a third CC for Sue Stanbury's Inixia Troysdale Time Traveller thus giving him his title subject to KC confirmation. Time Traveller was bred by Fred & Isobel Bristow perhaps better known for their Troysdale Shetland Sheepdogs. In fact Fred and Isobel purchased their first papillon in the 1950's from Arthur and Dally Stock (Arval) and their prefix at that time was Papspark. Since retiring they have come back into the breed. Bitch CC, her second, went to Sophie Langdon's Christea Midnight Rose for Skyvana, Time Traveller took BOB and was pulled out for the final cut in the Group. Reserves went to John Turner's Bodebi Rythm Is A Dancer in dogs and Carina Hancock's Caswell Fairy Story in bitches. BP was Finlayson's Shevid Sparkle For Sharjoy

At the Toy Dog Of Ireland Championship Show GSD and BOB went to Dolly Kavanagh's Ch Serenglade Special Design for Denemore, GSB to Dolly's Lindendale Lass for Serenglade, RGSD to Diane Mooney's Issoria Bibio Omaonaig and RGSB to Diane's Conysluck Magic Flute. Beat Veteran in Show went to Townsend's Magic Flute Of Brentville who is grand dam of Diane's Conysluck Magic Flute. Diane's recently titled Omaonaig Fairy Footsteps is I understand the second champion she has made up since moving to Ireland and is litter sister to her well known Ir Ch Int Ch Omaonaig Flame of Tara AN CH 05

Those folk who participate in the Papnet Group on the Internet will have seen details posted of a meeting proposed by the committee for Members of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club. The meeting was due to take place on 30 July and the purpose was to discuss any points Members may wish to raise with the Committee. Up for discussion  would  be  the appointment of the last June Open show Judge, the inclusion of the Judge's resume in the catalogue and Rescue issues. I had been asked to include full details of this notice in the Breed notes but shortly before sending off last week's notes I was requested by the Secretary not to print these details. I have no idea therefore whether or not this proposed meeting is in fact to go ahead, I did asked the Secretary a week ago from writing these notes if the meeting was going ahead but all she could tell me was that my 'query' would be passed on to the committee. I am not sure why it needs a committee discussion to tell me whether or not a planned meeting is going to take place. Perhaps we will hear more before these notes are printed but if not anyone intending to go might be wise to try and check if it is still going ahead, hopefully with more success than I have had.

From Diane Mooney comes the latest Irish news: At CLONMEL, Judge  MRS BELL UK

DGS & BOB Kavanaghs CH Serenglade Special Design for Denemore, RDGS  Mooneys Issoria Bibio Omaonaig, BGS   Kavanaghs Lindendale Lass for Serenglade, RBGS Mooneys Magic Flute, Best Veteran in Show  Townsends Magic Flute Of Brentville . Diane says:” I am proud to say  Omaonaig Fairy Footsteps is now an Irish Champion, my second since coming to Ireland, she is a litter sister of Ir CH INT CH Omaonaig Flame of Tara (Annual CH 05)

A new Champion in our breed was crowned at South Wales K.A. : STANBURY'S INIXIA TROYSDALE TIME TRAVELLER  taking his third CC and BOB under  Miss V. Hourihane he was also short listed in the group, the other principle results were :  Res Dog CC: TURNER'S BODEBI RHYTHM IS A DANCER taf ,Bitch CC: LANGDON'S CHRISTEA MIDNIGHT ROSE FOR SKYVANA , Res Bitch CC: HANCOCKS' CASWELL FAIRY STORY , Best Puppy: FINLAYSON'S SHEVID SPARKLE FOR SHARJOY, congratulations.

I travelled to Peterborough last weekend to judge several toy breeds and the Toy group for Peterborough and Dist CS at Sacrewell Farm and Country centre, sadly they were in a bit of chaos as high winds had taken down some of their marquees, Sophie Langdon judged Papillons and from a nice entry she awarded BOB to Eileen Roberts and Caroline Smiths Rayol Aristotles, and BP to Karen Maskells Kazkell Starlight Dream I was pleased to award R.Aristotles best in the toy group.

I have just arrived back from a few days down in Devon, the weather has been glorious and luckily although overcast it remained dry for Paignton Ch Show, here Mr D Jenkins judged the breed and another new Champion was crowned : Dog CC : Mrs S THOMPSON, Mrs J & AUSTIN Jhanakia Royal Highlander, taking his third CC today congratulations, Res Dog CC : Mrs T MORRELL, Mrs S & TEAGUE Temelora Just Magic JW , Bitch CC & BOB:  Mrs I & Mr G ROBB Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses, Res Bitch CC : Miss S. C. LANGDON Christea Midnight Rose For Skyvana,Best Puppy : Mrs D LOCKETT, Miss C. E & LOCKETT Matura The Mouseman Of Cheryldene. Mrs I & Mr G ROBB Gleniren Juniper Starmaker Sunshoo TAF won the puppy stakes under Mr. T Nethercott and Mr D & Mrs H MALCOLM Shamal Topaz won the Special Beginners stakes under Mr B Cadogan, both will need to return for the final day.

Continuing the rather worrying trend, the bitches were very thin on the ground at Paignton, after absentees only 20 bitches in total were present to be judged, twos and threes in most classes, this raises the question where are all the quality show bitches? I just hope there are some at home whelping litters that may help to buck the trend for the next show season. After the show Sue and Len Stanbury host their garden party open house, and it is always good fun to go along and relax after the show and watch Sues happy band of Papillons cavort about on the lawn, Len lays on a very nice buffet, a lovely way to end the day, many thanks to Len and Sue.

Two Championship Shows in five days meant a busy period for some, and with the hot weather not too pleasant. At Paignton Bitch CC and BOB went to Irene and Glenn Robb's Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses. Dog CC was Sandra Austin and Jane Thompson's Jhanakia Royal Highlander, this was his third CC thus giving him his title subject to KC confirmation. I believe also Sandra and Jane's first champion in the breed so an extra thrill for them. Reserves went to Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's Temelora Just Magic JW in dogs and in bitches to Sophie Langdon's Christea Midnight Rose For Skyvana in bitches. BP was Cheryl Lockett's Matura The Mouseman Of Cheryldene. Irene and Glenn Robb's Gleniren Juniper Starmaker Sunshoo won the day's heat of the Puppy Stakes. After the show a number of exhibitors went back and enjoyed the hospitality of Sue and Len Stanbury who held their usual garden party, much appreciated by all and I am sure everyone extends their thanks especially to Len who I am told did all the cooking!!!

At East of England Dog CC and BOB went to Sue Stanbury and Margaret Unwin's Inixia Dreams Magic, I believe this is his first CC. Bitch CC went to Brian Cox's Wish Upon A Star Over Tricianbri with Reserves going to John Turner's Bodebi Rythm Is A Dancer in dogs and Ann Stevens Tawzan Madame Cezan in bitches. BP went to Part Munn's Feorlig Picture Perfect at Ringlands

Over in Ireland at the Sligo Show GSB and BOB went to Dolly Kavanagh's Lindendale Lass For Serenglade, GSD to Diane Mooney's Omaonaig Fire Bird, RGSD to Dolly's Ch Serenglade Special Design For Denemore and RGSB to Mrs Killeen King's Dolissimo Crock of Gold

Eileen Roberts has been having a good run lately and not just with her papillons, In Papillons her Rayol Aristotles took BOB and Group 1 at the recent Peterborough Open Show and shortly after at the Evesham Open Show took BOB, Group 1 and BIS. Eileen was needless to say delighted.  Earlier at the Blackpool Championship Show her chocolate Cocker Spaniel Bitch, owned ointly with her daughter,  took the Bitch CC and I believe this is the first time this colour has taken a CC so quite a milestone in the breed. Many congratulations

We certainly have been having a good run of weather lately and I hope everyone is being extra careful with their dogs, especially the old and young who can find the heat a little too much. I know mine simply flake out on the kitchen floor and catch the breeze and wait until it gets cooler before bothering to go out in the garden. The cats on the other hand are out as soon as they can be and spend most of the day out, although wisely spend it in the shade sleeping in the shade under a bush.

Those folk who have access to the Internet will know that we used to have a list called Europapillon, originally set up for European Breeders and exhibitors to exchange news and views although over the years has become inter continental having many members from elsewhere in the world. Unfortunately the Listowner, Vesa Toivanen, has decided he could no longer give the time to running the list and it has now closed. These lists can be quite interesting in seeing the results of papillons around the world and especially in exchanging views over matters as diverse as health issues in dogs to the breed standards. One does rather have to sort the wheat from the chaff so to speak with the messages, sometimes the lists get inundated with people congratulating one another (I know we all like to receive congratulations but they get a bit tiresome when the message is repeated dozens of time). Sometimes even worse the lists at times seem to be used for self promotion but if one can get past that one can often read something of interest and enjoy some lively debates. I am pleased to say that Charlotte McGowan in the USA has bravely stepped into the breach and set up a list to replace Europapillon so folk can continue to enjoy similar facilities. Anyone interested in joining, and already there is a good membership spread around the world, the Homepage for the list where you can join is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Papillonworldlist/

I have been asked by the Secretary of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club to print the following "Unfortunately, the Members Open Forum Meeting, due to be held on 30th July 2006, has been cancelled as the Committee feels that the time scale from the announcement of the Meeting to the date it was to be held did not allow sufficient time for Members to make arrangements to attend. If this is something that Members would like to see organised by the Committee, before the AGM, please let any of the Officers or Committee know. All such items or issues are open for discussion at the AGM. The Committee apologise to the small number of Members who saw the notice and had made arrangements to attend"

I suspect the main reason the meeting has been cancelled, even if not admitted, is that until I mentioned it to the Secretary on 3 July when the original notice was sent out on the internet, no thought had been given to the fact that all members should have notice of such a meeting not just those who happen to be on the internet or read the Dog papers. A pity that aspect had not been considered before and a pity that it has taken 17 days to confirm that the meeting had been cancelled. It may only be a small number who had made arrangements but one would have thought a little  more consideration for those that had would have been given. Presumably those matters regarding Rescue, the June Open Show and one or two other matters will have to wait for the AGM, where many will think is in any case the proper place to address such issues.

Whilst the Secretary says 'All such items or issues are open for discussion at the AGM' that is of course subject to them being put forward in accordance with Club Rule 10 which states "Any member desiring to bring notice of alteration of, or addition to, existing rules, or any other business whatsoever must give notice, in writing, to the Secretary by the date published in the Preliminary Notice....No business shall be transacted at an Annual General Meeting unless notice thereof appears on the Agenda, with the exception of routine matters or those, in the opinion of the Chairman of the meeting, deemed to be urgent" Unless formal notice is given there is no certainty of any matter being allowed to be discussed and of course even if such matters were allowed to be brought up under AOB no votes or binding decisions could be taken on them. There does seem to be a lack of understanding of the correct way things should be done

Our Dogs

Eileen Roberts went to Evesham and District Canine Society Open Show and her Rayol Aristotles went BIS. The breed and group judge was John R. Clay (Bournville) and the BIS judge was Mr W. Browne-Cole (Travella), Eileen was actually at Malvern because The Cocker Spaniel Club Championship Show was on the same site and waiting for the cocker bitch classes she thought she might as well enter he Papillon at the Evesham show, however as events proceeded she never got to show her cocker girl, well done Eileen great result.

At East of England Ch. Show, Irene Robb judged the breed and her principle winners were: DCC and BOB INIXIA DREAMS MAGIC (MRS S & MISS M STANBURY & UNWIN), RDCC, BODEBI RHYTHM IS A DANCER TAF (MR J W TURNER), BCC, WISH UPON A STAR OVER TRICIANBRI (LT CDR B D S & MRS P A COX), RBCC,  TAWZAN MADAME CEZAN (MRS A & MR S F STEVENS), BP, FEORLIG PICTURE PERFECT AT RINGLANDS (MRS P MUNN), Dreams Magic was short listed in the group. I hear it was a very hot day but there was shelter for the exhibitors and the dogs.

The following was sent by the Secretary of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club: “Unfortunately, the Members Open Forum Meeting, due to be held on 30th July 2006, has been cancelled as the Committee feels that the time scale from the announcement of the Meeting to the date it was to be held did not allow sufficient time for Members to make arrangements to attend. If this is something that Members would like to see organised by the Committee, before the AGM, please let any of the Officers or Committee know. All such items or issues are open for discussion at the AGM. The Committee apologise to the small number of Members who saw the notice and had made arrangements to attend”.

I think personally, your clubs AGM is the correct place to raise questions about your club, put forward ideas and indeed praise your committee for a job well done, it is at this meeting answers have to be forthcoming and of course recorded, however anyone wishing to raise items for discussion must send these (within the correct timescale)  to be included on agenda to ensure they will be answered. Relying on asking questions in AOB is not always suitable and discussion of such items can be discretionary. Every club exists for the members, but so often the members are outnumbered by the committee at AGMs, the only time it is the other way is when there is something contentious to discuss, if you feel strongly about the way your club is run then stand up and say so, all members are equal and should never be made to feel they are not entitled to answers.

We are really getting through the shows and it is hard to believe we are now over halfway though the Championship calendar; there have been some very interesting results so far this year. We rely on Viv Cotton who records all the results and points, it’s a huge task and I know Viv enjoys doing it although at times she must be pulling her hair out when dogs change ownership or title and in some cases name, all that information will be so useful for years to come and also is interesting to compare year on year.

I am sure some of you must be having some Open Show success out there, so don’t be shy and let me have your news, views or both. Im not sure if you agility hounds run in this weather, but if you do let me have your news also.
