A report of a lost papillon appeared recently on Papnet I am not sure whether her owners have been found yet. A little black and white Papillon bitch was found on a farm in Wymondham (10 miles from Norwich) and taken to  Meadow Green Rescue Centre. She is about 9 years old, has a slightly off-centre blaze, and the other distinguishing mark is a shaved area on the leg, indicating a recent operation She is in good condition, shiny coat, no knots, well kept,; smallish ears. Meadow Green were very good, they kept her separate from the kennels, had her checked at the vet (healthy, no problems). She is being fostered in Norwich at the moment while Viv Cotton is trying to find out if anyone round there has lost her.The other possibility is that she was stolen from another part of the country, and dumped (perhaps) when it was found that she was possibly spayed. If anyone knows anything about her, PLEASE contact Viv as soon as possible (phone: 01284-704359)

At Bournemouth Dog CC and BOB went to Carine Rutten not this time with Antony but with Dutch Ch Up And Down's Frederike, I believe this is his first UK CC. Bitch CC went to Irene and Glen Robb's  Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses, Reserves went to Jan Roosen and Mrs Abeloos-Devos'  Siljans My Man in dogs and to Sandra Austin and Jane Thompson's Jhanakia Highland Breeze in bitches. BP was Sophie Langdon's  Skyvana Apparition Of Shadowknight. Interestingly the first four places in Open Dog went to dogs bred overseas should we be worrying about our UK Paps????

At the Welsh KC Dog CC and BOB went to Jenny Scovell's Caswell Take A Chance I believe this is his second CC. Bitch CC went to Jimmy Simpson's Danginifee Fairy Story at Penang, her first. Reserves went to Mrs  Casey's Shamal Rum Punch in dogs and in bitches to Pauline Wilson's Invergarick Modern Milly JW. BP was Mrs  Pike's Breezelyn Silver Spirit

Many congratulations to Wendy Wilson (nee Smith) Adinaken Papillons and her husband Kevin on the birth of their daughter Samantha

At the Highland Canine Association Open Show Linda Cumming's Prince Victory took BPIS

By the time these notes are published Memers of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club should have received their copies of the Summer Newsletter if you have not contact Carolyne Allward Chebsey.

Apologies for no notes last week, I was having a few days holiday over in the Netherlands so never got round to sending them before I left. I went to the International Ch. Show in Rotterdam and it was nice to catch up with some friends over there.

The Judge for Papillons and Phalenes was breed specialist  Mrs. J. Toebak van Valkenburg, her winners were in Papillons: BOB,D CAC CACIB  Papillon Up and Down's Frederike, owner Carine Rutten. BOS,B CAC CACIB  Papillon Farah Diva From Gemini's Home, owner Fransien van Linder Van Hoeij,  Res DCAC CACIB Infanta's Love is in the Air ,owner Petra Maas, Res BCAC CACIB Kingshaven Up Town Girl, owner Stany Segers. Youth DCAC Mondelise Lord O Delight, owner Carine Rutten.Today Youth BCAC Candygold's Yam n' Yelly, owner Petra Aben Maas,

Veteran CAC Tin Tin Born To Love van Jo Jo de La Haye, owner Patricia van Eijk.

In Phalene: BOB,DCAC CACIB Phalene Vermeil Des Charmes D'Antan owner Carine Rutten, BOS CAC,Youth CAC D'Alies Dog Isadora, owner Alie van Veelen- Zeilmaker.

Frederike who went BOB at Bournemouth this year was later placed group 2, Kingshaven Up Town Girl won her Dutch Ch title, Lord of Delight (from Australia with Nouveau breeding) won his 3rd junior CAC so became Youth Champion the first Papillon to do so in the Netherlands, so there were some very happy exhibitors. There was great hilarity during the judging when one dog was being checked to see if he was entire, the judge wasn’t too sure as the testicles were differing sizes so the official was called, meanwhile everyone had a feel and we all agreed he was entire, the dog seemed quite happy with all this attention, 10 minutes later the official arrived and checked him out and passed him entire much to everyone’s relief including the dogs. There are many shows in the Netherlands and it really is not so far to travel with dogs for anyone thinking of trying it. The Winner show in Amsterdam at the end of November is always good fun to visit and combine with a Christmas shopping trip. The Netherlands Papillon and Phalene club will hold back to back shows in October with another toy dog club so two shows over one weekend, anyone interested I can give you details.

At WKC Miss A Summerfield judged the breed and her winners were: Dog CC & BOB : Mrs J SCOVELL Caswell Take A Chance, Res Dog CC : Mrs J CASEY Shamal Rum Punch, Bitch CC :Mr J SIMPSON Danginifee Fairy Story at Penang, Res Bitch CC : Mrs P WILSON Invergarick Modern Milly JW, Best Puppy : Mrs J PIKE Breezelyn Silver Spirit.

At SKC August Ch.show Mrs A Skelton judged the breed and her winners were: BCC and BOB DANGINIFEE FAIRY STORY AT PENANG (MR J D SIMPSON), RBCC ABBEYTON SUMMER SUN (MRS J P SAVAGE), DCC BODEBI RHTHM IS A DANCER (MR J W TURNER), RDCC LYSANDRA'S ZXAR (DR N & MS T THURMAN), BP INIXIA BRIAR ROSE MOTYLEK (MRS L & DR M PHILLIPS). Congratulations to all winners.

Diane Mooney sends the following advice: “Those of you who may be Showing at Belfast should be aware that P&O have new rules if you are travelling with dogs, they are trying to prevent puppy farmers from using their ferries which is good, however it will inconvenience exhibitors. I believe that the requirements are a Vets letter plus filling out a form at the Port, then a inspection by a P&O official of your vehicle, I always cross Stena Line they are not at present doing anything like this but if you usually travel P&O contact them first”.

The Munster Circuit results are now complete and I shall try to get them printed next week. Dorothy Simpson posted this recently on Papnet for those of you not online I include it here: “I'm delighted to report that the Northern & Eastern Counties Papillon Calendar has gone to print and will be available at Darlington Championship show and at all major shows thereafter. They can be ordered for collection at shows or posted out as soon as they become available. The calendar has always been sold out well before the end of the year, so it is advisable to book early to avoid being disappointed. The cost this year is £6 per calendar + 75p P & P (uk) if required. Overseas orders are very welcome and P & P is at current PO costs.you can contact Dorothy on Tel: 01977 662533.  There were 127 photos in total entered for the calendar competition. Exhibitors attending the July show voted for their top 12 photos and again the results have produced a super calendar that would grace any wall”.

Everyone in papillons will know how successful Sue and Ian Victor's daughter Emma has been over the years in Junior Handling and other dog activities. Now I hear she has just returned from a 2 day Final Selection for joining the Army, her ambition is to become an Army Dog Trainer. She attained a Grade A Pass and will now spend a day with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps Dog Section ( they need to assess whether or not she is confident with dogs - so no problem for her there!!!) and, provided they are happy, she will commence training very soon. Emma has always wanted to combine her love of dogs with some kind of worthwhile career, wishing to build upon her many competitive successes in Obedience, Agility, Flyball and Handling. It has taken 15 months of interviews, fitness training and various tests of character for Emma to have finally been accepted. Her only regret is that the Army will not let her take one of her own dogs with her, but insist on providing her with German Shepherds and Springer Spaniels!!! Rightly so Sue and Ian are very proud of all Emma has achieved and they would also like to thank everyone who has supported Emma along the way and I am sure we would all wish Emma every success in her chosen field.

At City of Birmingham Dog CC and BOB went to Jenny Scovell's Ch Caswell Classic Tri, Bitch CC to Jo Davidson Poston's Ibstock Tululah For Spinillons. This was Tululah's third CC thus giving her her title subject to KC Confirmation, bred by Rosemary Ayris she is by Ch. Ibstock Marksman  out of  Daneview Dainty Blue Bonnet. Res Dog CC to Dk Norw Ch Gleniren Premier League Sunshoo owned jointly by Irene and Glenn Robb and Carolyn and David Roe, and Res Bitch CC to Irene and Glenn's  Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses. Irene and Glenn also took BP with Gleniren Juniper Starmaker Sunshoo who went on to take PG4.

At Richmond Bitch CC, her second, and BOB went to Amy Mason's Amicae Spirit Of Amsema, Dog CC to Ms C Lees Ch Bodebi Ray of Success to Lafford, Res Bitch CC to Brian and Pat Cox's Wish Upon A Star Over Tricianbri and Res Dog CC to Mr S W & Mrs J V Foote's Southanning Top Hat. BP was  Mrs A Fraser and Miss G Graham's  Abbeyton To Sweet To Kiss at Bonmeshay NAF.

Richmond of course is the show where the National Semi Finals of the JHA Handler of the Year competition take place and over the years our Papillon juniors have done us proud. This year was no exception indeed one could say this year the our juniors were even more successful and Sue Victor has been kind enough to write a report of the success of our Juniors. She writes "Fashions in handling have certainly changed in the last few years. Time was, if you didn't have a stack breed, you almost didn't stand a chance. For a good few years, the only brave souls to be in the semis with a Pap were Glenn and Emma...surrounded by Italian Greyhounds and Bichons!!! This year, the Papillon Juniors were out in force with a total of TWELVE of the competitors handling Papillons! Big congratulations are due to each and every one...looking smart and handling with plenty of style. The ringside was surrounded by proud family members either biting their nails, pacing or chain smoking (that was me!)

Former Pap juniors were also given the honour of judging two of the competitions, with Kirsty Miller presiding over the 6-11 year old Gundog class and Tom Isherwood judging 12-16 toy class. Kirsty (Feorlig) is a regular pap exhibitor and Tom (Vanitonia) started his handling career with a pap. Kirsty will be flying the pap flag high this coming Thursday as she has a young pap bitch in the finals of the Petplan Junior Stakes Finals....Good Luck! I may not have the results 100% right as had to dash off to show in Minor puppy dog, but here goes....6-11 years 1st Amelia Whipps, 2nd Joshua Howarth, 3rd Rebecca Thompson. 12-16 years  1st Emma McLaughlin, 2nd Helen Rishworth (Italian Greyhound), 3rd Amy Mason (we think!), 4th Not Known, 5th John Leiper  (we think). We think Clare Butler was also placed but not sure where? So, we think Papillons accounted for seven of the available placings! Please, if anyone can fill in the gaps, or correct the above...please do!"

Hopefully the results are correct if they are not don't blame me or Sue who was kind enough to forward the details, proud parents can always let me have their news direct!!! Incidentally in the breed at Richmond both CC winners were handled by juniors.

I heard recently from Eileen and Neville Bates in South Africa, Eileen tells me they have recently imported a papillon from the Mondelise Kennels in Australia and have been having a good bit of success with it. Eileen and Nev have recently moved house, their new address is POBox 1413, Henley on Klip, 1962, Gauteng telephone no 0027 11 016 3660668. and is about 40 kms south of Johannesburg

News from Ireland, at the Killarney & DCC Championship Show GSB & BOB went to Dolly Kavanagh's Lindendale Lass for Serenglade, GSD to Sue Belshaw's Belvisaj Simply Charming, RGSB to Sue's Belvisaj I Have A Dream and RGSD to Diane Mooney's Omaonaig Grey Swallow. At the Drogheda Ch Show GSD, BOB and Gp3 went to Dolly's  CH Serenglade Special Design for Denemore, GSB to Diane's  Conysluck Magic Flute, RGSD to Dolly's Serenglade Its party Time and RGSB to Diane's Conysluck Meg Merrilees

At the Rotherham Parkgate & DCS Open SHow BOB and RBIS went to Karen and Steve Maskell's Kaskell Dillon's Dream W ShCm P was thier Kazkell Tetley's Dream

There are some concerns at the moment over Rescue, as we all know Debbie Gornall recently resigned as Rescue Coordinator for the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club and it seems at the moment there is some confusion over exactly what is happening with regard to Rescue. As a temporary measure Sue Stanbury, who as most folk will know set up the Rescue Scheme the parent club runs and is very involved with Rescue through the S Wales Club, has persuaded Margaret Unwin to act as a coordinating point for rescue cases. Margaret as we all know does a wonderful job in running the Puppy Register. If anyone needs to pass on rescue details it is suggested you contact Margaret and if anyone is willing to help with home checks or anything else please do let Margaret know. It seems pretty obvious that Rescue is something which is going to be looked at more and more and perhaps the whole system needs overhauling and changing, for the time being though as Sue says the most important thing is to ensure that those dogs needing rehoming etc are being cared for now. I have been asked to mention that as far as Scotland is concerned the Papillon Club of Scotland are continuing to operate their own Rescue scheme and any enquiries can be dealt with as before by either Elizabeth Cochrane or Mary Whitehill. No doubt more will be heard about Rescue in the months to come, it is a matter which should be of importance to us all and we all ought to be considering the best way forward and clearly that should be what is best for the dogs concerned.

Our Dogs

Nome nice Open show results have been coming in, from David Wenham and Aubrey Malbon , their young bitch has been having some very good wins lately, at Leicseter City show,  Danginifee Gypsy Gold was BP and went on to Puppy group 4 & their Ringlands Pearl took BOB, then at Romfoord and District: Gypsy Gold took both BP and BOB with R. Pearl taking RBOB. From Steve Maskell came news that Kazkell Dillons Dream JW ShCM won Reserve Best in Show at Rotherham and Parkgate Open Show under Judge M. Smith, well done to everyone and keep the Open show results coming in.

We were lucky with such lovely weather for Richmond this year, the venue at Loosely Park  is very good, with nice size rings, our breed was judged by  Mrs H. Byers (Chappell) and she found her principle winners in: Bitch CC & BOB : Miss A MASON Amicae Spirit Of Amsema, Res Bitch CC : Mr B. D. S. & Mrs P.A. COX Wish Upon A Star Over Tricianbri, Dog CC :  Ms C LEES Ch Bodebie Ray of Success to Lafford, Res Dog CC : Mr S W & Mrs J V FOOTE Southanning Top Hat, Best Puppy : Miss G FRASER, Mrs A & GRAHAM Abbeyton To Sweet To Kiss at Bonmeshay NAF, Best Veteran : Mrs K A TIDMARSH Vella Eurocrat For Creliatown. It was great to watch two expert junior handlers  (Amy & Emma) battling it out for BOB, the standard of their handling is superb and in no way over done, also there considerate attention in shielding their dogs from the hot sun while in the ring pays dividends. While of course in the breed ring the judge should concentrate only on the dog, without doubt good handling skills will enhance any exhibit. At Ricmond each year we see the Juniors out in force and to say the Papillon juniors took the semi-finals by storm would be an understatement: in the 6-11 age group: 1st Amelia Whipps, 2nd Joshua Howarth, 3rd Rebecca Thompson, in the 12-16 age group :1st- Emma Mclaughlin, 4th- Claire Butler, 5th- Amy Mason, 6th-John Leiper, a really great result for all our juniors and huge congratulations to them all.

News of two Open shows on one day at the same venue for you to enter. The South of England Papillon Club will hold their Open Show back to back with the South Western Toy Dog Club on 26th  November 2006, At Wellsprings Leisure Centre, Taunton. South Western Toy Dog are scheduling 10 classes of Papillons , for their Judge: Ms. C. Lockett (Cheryldene) Judging starts 10.00am. The South of England Papillon Club will then take over the ring and are scheduling 14 Classes for their Judge: Mr. G. Robb (Gleniren), Judging (not before 12.00 noon), The S. E. P. Club is offering Papillon Statues for all class winners, £10 for Best Phalene –  £10 for Best Veteran, Royal Canine are sponsoring both shows with prizes in all classes, For a schedule of South of England Papillon Club Tel. P Shirley  01273 304865, For South Western Toydog Club Tel. Mr L Cox 01278 760210 . All South of England members will receive their schedules shortly.

My calendars arrived this week from the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club and they are really superb, Dorothy Simpson needs to be congratulated on all the hard work she has put into the venture. There is a useful insert containing phone numbers of all the Secretaries of the Papillon clubs, and all the toy dog societies also every month features Show dates (including Irish dates) and other Papillon functions, The calendars make great presents to send overseas too, any one requiring one should call Dorothy on 01977 662533.

Overseas it is quite common to have back to back shows, given that often the distances the folk in the USA and Australia in particular travel clearly it is a good idea. Here in the UK we are more used to having one show per day although given the cost of petrol and the likelihood of that increasing I wonder whether having more than one show per day will become more common. The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club of course has once or twice held their Open Show at the end of the year in conjunction with an all breed show and that proved quite popular. The South Of England Papillon Club are I hear going to hold their November Open Show in conjunction with the South Western Toy Dog Club both Shows are very popular with exhibitors and I am sure both will draw good entries. The Shows will be held on 26 November at Wellsprings Leisure Centre, Cheddon Road ,Taunton TA2 7QP. South West Toys are scheduling 10 classes of Papillons to be judged by Cheryl Lockett (Cheryldene) and the South of England Papillon Club are scheduling 14 classes to be judged by Glenn Rob (Gleniren). The SW Toys will be scheduled first at 10 a.m. to be followed by the South of England Papillon Club classes no earlier than 12.00 noon. And it seems exhibitors won't even have to change rings. The SEPC are offering Papillon Statues for all class winners, £10 for Best Phalene and for Best Veteran and Royal Canin are sponsoring both shows with prizes in all classes. For schedules for the  South of England Papillon Club Tel. P Shirley  01273 304865 ad for  South Western Toydog Club Tel. Mr L Cox 01278 760210

Congratulations to two successful exhibitors at the Darlington Championship Show. Jenny Scovell's Ch Caswell Classic Tri as well as taking the Dog CC and BOB went on to win the Toy Group, well done Jenny and Bertie. On top of that Jo Davidson Poston's Ch & Ir Ch Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons took Best Veteran in Breed and went on to win the Toy Veteran Group so well done to Jo and Sparky. A super day for the breed. Bitch CC went to Anne McGregor's Pyatshaw Silver Tassie and I understand this is her third CC thus giving her her title subject to KC Confirmation. Congratulations to Anne and of course Silver Tassie. Reserves went to Ms C Lees Ch Bodebi Ray of Success to Lafford in dogs and Lynda Woodrow's Ablazzor Christmas Cracker At Lynflyer in bitches. BP was Miss Y Rudge with Ablazzor Royal Sensation

Congratulations are also due to Stuart Cotton and his wife Paula on the birth of a son James Anthony who was born on Thursday 14 September at 1.45pm weighing in at 6lb 12oz. I am sure Viv Cotton (Aporia) is every inch the proud grandmother.

I am pleased to be able to report some Agility news as often I don't get such news and I am sure many of us are interested in hearing how well the papillons are doing even if we are not energetic enough to actually do it!!! Denise Welsh with her Bedellus Heaven Sent To Kazim, known as Angel, took their first run in KC Novice Agility recently, a course of some 20 obstacles and had a clear round taking 1st Place. Angel who is just 18 months old is not only good at agility she has also qualified for Crufts. Congratulations also to Barbara Pointer and Daisy, Bedellus Demelza, on Daisy gaining her Agility Warrant

I understand it has recently been announced by the Irish KC  that Phalenes have now been  included on the List of Breeds recognised by the Irish Kennel Club

Our Dogs

Darlington Ch. Show saw some very good results for Papillons , the breed was judged by Mr Stuart Mallard, his winners were: Dog CC & BOB Mrs J SCOVELL Ch Caswell Classic Tri, Res Dog CC Ms C LEES Ch Bodebie Ray of Success to Lafford, Bitch CC Mrs A B MACGREGOR Pyatshaw Silver Tassie, Res Bitch CC Mrs L A WOODROW Ablazzor Christmas Cracker At Lynflyer, Best Puppy  Miss Y RUDGE Ablazzor Royal Sensation, Best Veteran Mrs J DAVIDSON-POSTON Ch & Ir Ch Ibstock Bright Spark For Spinillons ShCM. Classic Tri went on to win the Toy Group which in the current running of things is a huge achievement, there being so many top winning dogs in the group. Silver Tassie won her third and crowning CC to make her the latest breed Champion. Bright Spark went on to win the Veteran Toy Group. Great results all round congratulations.

Some nice Agility news too:  Denise Welsh with Angel (Bedellus Heaven sent to Kazim) ran a clear round with her first 1st run in KC Novice Agility on Saturday. The course had 20 0bstacles and Angel completed within the time allowed.  Barbara Pointer and Daisy  (Bedellus Demelza) have been winning well and Daisy has now gained her Agility Warrant (a great achievement). Well done to both.

It was nice to hear from Petula Field that her two Papillons have been having some good wins of late, over the last couple of weeks, Happypappy Forestflame and Glynllifon Pocket Rocket have been winning well at Flint and Deeside and at Anglesey, Petula is thrilled her Glynllifon Pocket Rocket has also been featured in the N & E Papillon Club Calendar this year.

I dropped in on Ardingly this week for Horsham and District Open show, there was a very low entry overall and some breeds had only one or two entries, but I am pleased to see the local Papillon exhibitors, as always gave a very good entry of 14 dogs for Mr Tony Allcock, BOB was the lovely r/s/w bitch Wish Upon A Star Over Tricianbri belonging to Pat and Brian Cox, Best Puppy was Sam Tydmans Kingshaven Whodunnit At Karingal, who went on to Puppy group 4, well done.

I had the following from Suzy Tanton of South western Toy Dog Club,” After such a resounding success last year - SWTDC is holding its annual Puppy Party & Parade of Champions on Tuesday evening 24th October 7pm @ The Watchfield Inn, Nr.Highbridge, Somerset (Jnt 22 off the M5). Tickets are limited & going fast so to order; please phone Suzy Tanton 01805 625512 or Kaqren Bartlett on 01271 864943 - if you have a Toy Champion please ring through details to Karen. This year -again Royal Canin are supporting this unique event & Dartington Crystal are providing the beautiful Crystal trophies.  For a night to remember including a fabulous buffet, quiz, mystery tombola & Len Stansbury in his role as steward extraordinaire -it makes for a very enjoyable evening & one to mark in your calendar -there is a prize ticket draw & the theme for this year is "Come Hula" Hawaiian - bright coloured clothes - & grass skirts acceptable but not compulsory as we don't want to frighten the dogs!” Sounds like great fun to me, do support this event.

An interesting note from Marion Sloan on Papnet “Just thought you would like to know that I have a letter from the Irish kennel Club to-day wishing to advise that the Phalene has now been included on the List of Breeds recognised by the Irish kennel Club and approved by the An Ard Chomhaire on 8th September”.

Im not sure of the implications of this, certainly with full FCI membership the IKC will I would think be scheduling Phalene separately from Papillon, whether they will also have separate classes for the IKC gold stars and Champion Titles remains to be seen.
