Irene and Glenn Robb had a super day at the Papillon Club of Scotland Championship Show. Bitch CC and BIS went to their home bred Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses with Dog CC and RBIS going to home bred Dk/Nor Ch Gleniren Premier League Sunshoo, jointly owned with Carolyn and David Roe. On top of that it was Premier League's third CC thus giving him his title subject to KC confirmation. Reserve CC's went to Terry and Nigel Thurman's Lysandra's Zxar in dogs and Mary Whitehill's Amicae Startime in bitches. BPIS went to Sue Stanbury's Panspayon Stepin Out With Inixia. The Club's committee are to be congratulated for such a fine show as at almost the last moment they were informed that due to a major electrical problem at the venue it had been closed on Health and Safety Grounds. After some frantic searching an alternative venue was found about 5 miles away and efforts were made to contact all exhibitors to advise them. Despite the lateness of the decision to close the original venue the show went off without a hitch and the committee even managed to provide their own catering.

Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague had a good day at the Oxfordshire & Thame Premier Open show. The show was scheduling qualification classes for the Kennel Gazette Junior Warrant Semi finals so they decided they would enter these also with their Temelora Just Magic JW and Temelora Storm Petrel JW. Just Magic won the class thus qualifying for the Junior Warrant Semi finals with Storm Petrel taking the runners up position. In the Breed Classes Just Magic took BOB with Storm Petrel taking RBOB, Sue and Thes even managed to take BPIB with their new 6 month old puppy, with Just Magic going on to take BIS. So a very successful day for them. A couple of days later at the Stafford Show Just Magic again took BOB and the Toy Group with the new puppy taking BPIB and PG4

I am sure everyone will be pleased to hear that the South of England Papillon Club has been granted Championship Show status with effect from 2009. It is indeed a well deserved recognition of the hard work that the committee of this club has undertaken since it was formed, not that long ago. The committee has done much to provide its members and other papillon folk with many wonderful events and its tremendous success in raising funds for charitable purposes has done much to promote the breed itself and dogs in general. All the committee members deserve credit for this and none more so that the Club Secretary Phil Shirley. I am sure everyone will look forward in anticipation to their first championship show. The Club's Chairman Pearl Peacock made the following comment "I would like to say how thrilled I am to hear, the South of England Papillon Club has been granted Championship status. In the few years since the club was founded it has continued to promote the breed in every way possible, this recognition from the Kennel Club proves what a hard working committee along with a very loyal membership can achieve. The members in particular must be thanked for their continued support of the club and its various functions. It is very good news for the breed that Papillons will gain an extra set of Challenge Certificates from 2009 and it will bring the club online with the other four breed clubs. My thanks again to the Committee past and present, the excellent work of the Secretary and to the membership my sincere thanks for your support."

The Papillon Club of Scotland held their Ch. Show last week, the Judge was Mr A Wight and he found his principle winners in: BITCH CC & BIS Mrs. I & Mr. G Robb Ch. GLENIREN STARLIGHT KISSES, RBCC Mrs. M. Whitehill AMICAE STARTIME, DOG CC / RBIS Mrs. I & Mr. G Robb & Mr D & Mrs C Roe Dk/Nor. Ch. GLENIREN PREMIER LEAGUE SUNSHOO, RDCC Dr. N. & Mrs T Thurman LYSANDRA'S ZXAR, BPIS Mrs S  Stanbury PANSPAYON STEPIN OUT WITH INIXIA, Best Junior Handler: Miss A. Mason. A great result for the team Gleniren/Sunshoo taking both CCs and also for PREMIER LEAGUE as this was his third, he becomes the breeds latest champion and he now adds his UK Ch. Title to his Danish and Norwegian titles. Many congratulations.

Ted Whitehill and the committee must have had a terrible time, with less than 48 hours to go to the show they were informed due to a major electrical problem the scheduled venue had been closed on Health and Safety grounds. Luckily they were offered an alternative venue in Falkirk, which was only about 5 miles or so from the scheduled venue. They then had to try to contact all the exhibitors to let them know of the change of venue. I hear everything went well and there was a most enjoyable show.

AtAshford, Faversham & District Canine Society Open show David Wenham and Aubrey Malbons, Danginifee Gypsy Gold was BOB and went on to Toy Group 2.

At Portsmouth and Southsea Open show,Brian and Pat Cox’s  bitch Wish Upon A Star Over Tricianbri went BOB and Group 3 and Carol and Martin Wilsons puppy Erinsjoy Copacabana went BP and Puppy group 3.

Sue Morrell and Thes Teague went to Oxfordshire & Thame Premier Open show with the intention of trying to qualify their young Junior Warrant winners Temelora Just Magic JW (Jason) and T. Storm Petrel JW (Storm) for the Kennel Gazette Junior Warrant Winner of the Year semi-finals competition that takes place at Discover Dogs in November. They actually had a terrific day in that one of their puppies won BP, Storm was RBOB and Jason won BOB and then went on to Best in Show.  Following on from this, Jason then qualified for the Kennel Gazette Junior Warrant Semi-finals and Storm was runner up. They arrived home very late and a couple of days later they were at it again at Stafford Open Show Jason went BOB and took the toy group again and their new little puppy also gained his second BP and earned himself Puppy group 4, well done to all the winners this week.

I am delighted to say the Kennel Club has granted Championship status to the South of England Papillon Club for 2009.

The Chairman of the Club, Mrs Pearl Peacock has asked me to relay the following: “I would like to say how thrilled I am to hear, the South of England Papillon Club has been granted Championship Status. At Belfast Championship Show DCC and BOB went to Miss C Lees Ch Bodebi Ray Of Success At Lafford who went on to take G4. Bitch CC, I beleive her second, went to Mrs K M Smith's Wee Lucy Of Adinaken Shcm, RDCC to  Miss L Cumming's Prince Victory and RBCC to Mrs A Macgregor's Pyatshaw Silver Tassie. BP was Mr J A Magri's Frasermar Fairy Tale.

At the S Wales Papillon Club Championship Show Bitch CC and BIS went to Amy Mason's Amicae Spirit At Amsema, this was her third CC thus giving her her title subject to KC confirmation. A special win for Amy as it is her first champion and a super day for her as she also took Best Junior Handler in Show. Congratulations to Amy and of course to Spirit's breeder Mary Whitehill, Spirit is by Ch Ibstock Marksman x Kingshaven Quazy Rhythm.  Dog CC was Sue Morrell and Thesbina Teague's Temelora Wallace (Ch Serenglade Sebastian At Temelora x Serenglade Simallah For Temelora), RDCC was Sue Stanbury and Margaret Unwin's Inixia Dream's Magic and RBCC was Irene and Glenn Robb's Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses. BP went to Sophie Langdon's Skyvana Apparition of Shadownight. I see also from the results that Linda Greenslade's Serenglade prefix figured considerably in the major awards, as well as the Dog CC, Temelora Wallace, being out of Serenglade parents his sire, Ch Serenglade Sebastian at Temelora took BVIS, and a Wallace son, Temelora Just Magic who is out of Serenglade Pickety Wytch For Temelora took 1st in Limit dog. Another Serenglade, Serenglade Sequin, took Best Phalene in Show.

More success for the Serenglade's in Ireland where at the Carlow Championship Show GSD and BOB went to Dolly Kavanaghs Ch Serenglade Special Design for Denemore, GSB to Dolly's Ch Lindendale Lass for Denemore, RGSD to Dolly's Serenglade Its Party Time and RGSB to Diane Mooney's  Conysluck Sunshadow

Christine Gerhold Brown has sadly lost her old boy Ringland Blackshine at the good age of 18 years. Christine says Tim was quite a little character and will be sadly missed. He has left behind him a son and daughter and a grand daughter Kilan Contessa who reminds Christine so much of Blackshine. It is always sad to lose one of our dogs especially one who has been with us for so long and no matter how long one is in dogs it never gets any easier indeed I think it gets harder.

I talked with Sue Jones this week on the phone, Sue sounded very cheerful and I am glad to say her voice has improved greatly since the trouble she had last year, not so good is sadly her diabetes is causing troubles for her and she is experiencing some problems with her eyes, hopefully with treatment this will improve. Im sure Sue would welcome a note or call from her friends in the breed.

Speaking to Margaret Raper recently, she told me how thrilled she had been with the wins of her and her husbands dogs this summer, Kazkell Tetleys Dream (Teabag) has won several Best Puppies notably at Bakewell, Rotherham and Parkgate, North Lincs and he also took BAV Toy at Worksop, at Niddredale they took BAV Pup with Kazkell Clockwork Dream and BAV with Cofton Flight of the Pheonix to Inizia. Margaret has just been in the breed a couple of years and said how much fun they get from their dogs, now retired, its good to have an interest that gets them out and about.

Over in Belfast, Mr R Brampton judged the breed, his winners were:DCC & BOB :CH BODEBI RAY OF SUCCESS AT LAFFORD (MRS C P LEES), RDCC: PRINCE VICTORY (MISS L CUMMING), BCC: WEE LUCY OF ADINAKEN ShCM (MRS K M SMITH), RBCC: PYATSHAW SILVER TASSIE (MRS A MACGREGOR), Best PUPPY: FRASERMAR FAIRY TALE (MR J A MAGRI). This was the third and crowning CC for Amicae Spirit and she becomes the latest Champion in the breed ,many congratulations to Amy Mason who handles and presents her dogs so well. Sue Morrell and Thes Teauge must have been thrilled with Best in Show they have been having some great success, Sue sent me the following which shows South Wales must be a lucky show for the Temelora kennel “You probably noted on Papnet that our Temelora Wallace won BIS at the S. Wales Pap. Club Champ show on Sunday.  We found it all rather amazing because not only did Jason (T. Just Magic JW) win BIS two weeks ago, now T. Wallace, his father, has done the same at the Club champ show. Quite interesting is the fact that at the Club show Jason  (T. Just Magic JW) won Limit, Wallace won Open and Sebastian won veteran. So three generations winning three consecutive classes. (Jason is Wallace’s son and Wallace is Sebastian’s son)”. Many congratulations to all the winners.

At Driffield Ch. Show Mr J Simpson judged the breed and he found his principle winners in : Dog CC & BOB, Mrs A COOPER Lynflyer Harry Zona, Res Dog CC, Mrs I & Mr G ROBB Sunshoo Imahot Shot Gleniren TAF, Bitch CC,Mrs A B MACGREGOR Pyatshaw Silver Tassie, Res Bitch CC,Mrs P WILSON Invergarick Modern Milly JW, Best Puppy : Miss S C LANGDON Skyvana Apparition Of Shadowknight.

The schedule of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Open show arrived this week, the show is to take place on Saturday 25th November, at the usual venue The Sports Connexion, Ryton-on-Dunsmore, Judges for the show are Mrs Anne Stevens (Tawzan ) for the Breed classes and the Junior Handling classes will be judged by Miss Kirsty Miller (Feorlig) .Those that were lucky enough to win Trophies at the last show, please make sure they are back with the Trophy Steward: Sue Victor, tel: 0115 9114774. Schedules have been posted to regular exhibitors; if you need one please contact the secretary Mrs Allward-Chebsey Entries Close Friday 3rd November.

Some people are a bit shy to let me have their results, thinking it is bragging, however I am more than happy to include wins where possible, after all its not you that wins, its your dogs that win and clever as Papillons might be they have not yet mastered the art of e-mail, so they rely on you relaying the information.

I had a nice email from Joanne Hanson (Basilbrooke), Joannne is not one to blow her own trumpet but is very proud of her dogs achievements in agility. Over in Belfast Joannes bitch CHERYLDENE NOUVELLE FLEUR DE BASILBROOKE ( FLEUR ) won Starters Agility and Novice Jumping and her other bitch  INVERGARICK
TILLY OF BASILBROOKE ( TILLY ) took second place to her in these two classes
Tilly also won starters jumping and Novice agility and Fleur took second place to her in both these classes, so two 1sts and two 2nds for each dog. Both now have more than three quarters of their Agility Warrant points, and Joanne now moves up to compete in Novice/Intermediate. To top the weekend off Joanne also took 1st, 2nd and 3rd with her Border Collie. What a great weekend she must have had, many congratulations.

I am pleased to report Ian Chandler is home from hospital after surgery on his spine, Ian is making a very good recovery, I am sure we all wish him well.

I don’t get many results from Scottish open shows, although there is a good facility to see results on the Papillon Club of Scotland website http://scotpapnews.blogspot.com/  edited by Elizabeth Patrick. Joan Savage did send me some news of a litter or her pups that have done well for their new owners, so well done to all of them and their breeder Joan. Sue Deamers   Abbeyton Isle B Willin To Tri  (Wills) attended Belfast champ show (his first outing), was placed 3rd out of an entry of 9 in puppy dog. Joans   Abbeyton Some Like It Hot (Marnie) attended Driffield Ch Show, won 1st Minor Puppy Bitch and Best Puppy Bitch in Breed (her first outing), Susan Gauld & Joe Cassidys,   Abbeyton What's It All About (Alfie) attended Scottish Toydog Society, won 1st Papillon Jnr Dog and 1st AV Minor Puppy, more special because this was everyone's first show. Also a mention to Anna Fraser and Abbeyton To Sweet To Kiss who are enjoying the fun of showing in the show ring.

Petula Field sent me following: “Glynllifon Pocket Rocket won the Open class and was Best of Breed at Pwllheli & District Canine Open Show yesterday under Mrs J Thornton (Glendraterra), then my 7 year old Red Sable and White dog Happypappy Forestflame was 3rd in the Veteran Stakes at the same show” well done Petula

Sue Victor posted the following on papnet: “Just wanted to share some good news with everyone, The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club's Newsletter has, once again, been entered in the competition organised by Dog World newspaper. This competition is open to all Breed Club Newsletters. The first time this competition was held (2004), our Newsletter won 2nd prize overall. Judging has just been completed for the second competition and the Club has been awarded JOINT FIRST PRIZE ! The presentation will be held in the Papillon ring at Midland Counties Ch show at the end of October. I personally would like to congratulate Carolyne Allward-Chebsey (Newsletter Editor) for all her hard work, a well-deserved achievement for a dedicated lady. Congratulations (and thanks) must also go to everyone who has contributed to the Newsletter, because, without everyone's input, it would not have won”

I have had a couple of calls from TV companies recently asking for help to find Papillons willing to take part in programmes. Firstly the Channel 5 programme “So you want to be a Super Model” the models are to dress as Marie Antionette and will walk down the cat walk each with a Papillon on a lead. It is said Marie Antionettes dog was actually a red and white Phalene, don’t quote all this as truth but it sounds possible and highly probable.

Marie Antoinette’s mother Marie Therese was given a gift of a Papillon from Italy, missing her daughter so much, she sent the dog to her as a gift, she loved and doted on the little thing. The dog accompanied Marie Antionette to the guillotine where her Austrian handmaid managed to grab the dog and looked after it for a while before returning it to Marie Therese, as it was the last thing Marie Antionette cherished. The dog stayed with Marie Therese in Austria and when it died she had it preserved by Taxidermy and it is still today on show in a glass cabinet on one of the staircases in the Hapsburg Palace Museum of Natural History in Vienna, It was a small red and white dog with drop ears. The quality of the Taxidermy was so good it has survived all this time and still retains a very alert expression something, which the breed is famous for.

The other call was from Channel 4 asking for some Papillons to take part in the programme “ Its Me or the Dog”, Denise Welsh took along her dogs and they helped with the intelligence tests, Angel (Bedelus Heaven Sent to Kazim) will be appearing in the programme screened  the end of November, it will also feature Denise’s little Graycaz dog, and one of her Border Collies.

News from the Netherlands Papillon and Phalene Club that recently held their jubilee show (celebrating 30 years) back to back with the Pekinese and Toy Spaniel Club (celebrating 75years). The Peke and Toy club were on the Saturday with specialist judge Mr. Hilverda. BOB and eventually Best in Show was Carine Ruttens Multi Ch, Antony, Best Veteran and eventually Best Veteran in Show 2 was Patricia van Eijk’s, Tin Tin Born to Love van Jo Jo De La Haye. On the Sunday the Netherland Papillon and Phalene Club had breed specialist Mrs. De Vos judging. Deirdre Ashdown was at the show and donated some super prizes. I sent over some rosettes and have had a lovely letter of thanks from the club. Mrs. Lou Ann King from the famous US kennel Loteki was also there. Mrs de Vos found her prinicle winners in: BOB and BIS: Antony (Carine Rutten) , Res.BIS (Phalene) Djacinta Di Papalino(Carine Rutten), Best Bitch, BOS Farah Divah From Gemeni's Home (Fransien van Linder) , Best Baby in Show, Kings and Queenies Sir Lancelot (Petra Aben), Best Puppy in Show Up and Down's High Noon (Carine Rutten) Best Veteran and Best Veteran in Show Tin Tin Born to Love van Jo Jo de La Haye (Patricia van Eijk). I am not sure how many times Antony has won BIS  at the Dutch club but it seems like for ever, he really has gained fame wherever in Europe he has been exhibited. I think Carine also needs to be congratulated on turning him out so beautifully.

The South of England Papillon Club recently held its Papillon Education Day at New Haw. Anne Borg organises this event and is to be congratulated on its success. The event was well supported by 50 members, the morning event saw Mr Steve Dean presenting Mating, Miracles and Magic, this thorough (yet amusing at times) talk on the joys and heartache of breeding was extremely well received and I recommend anyone who has never been to one of Mr Deans talks on this subject to go, there is always something to learn no matter how long you have been breeding. After a super lunch with many choices of main course and dessert, provided by Rita Dack , Anne Borg and the catering team. We were given an introduction to Agility in toy dogs, by Denise and Alex Welsh with the aid of slides and demonstrations and of course the (multi retired) Harley the Magnificent, who obviously just loves the agility course and will never really retire. The day ended with the usual cream tea and scones, sending everyone happily on their way. During the lunch break there was a small floral presentation to club member Eileen Clayton, never one to brag in any form, we managed to find out Eileen had been mentioned in the Queens birthday honours and in fact has been Honoured with the MBE. The award is for her services to the Ffestiniog Railway, which is a not-for-profit heritage railway relying on a large volunteer workforce to supplement the work of its paid staff.  The core reason for the award is because Eileen has encouraged kids to come to work on the railway, providing them with opportunities to work with good supervision and support, at times without their parents.  As a result of doing this for over 20 years, the average age of the volunteers has fallen from somewhere around 50 to around 30.  Most restored railways have a fairly geriatric workforce, so their turn-around has made them the envy of the heritage railway in this respect. Congratulations to Eileen, I was not sure whether to bow when presenting her but she told me not to as she is abysmal at curtsying!
