The Papillon Junior Awards for 2006 have been announced. The Results are 6-11 years 1st:  Rebecca Thompson; 2nd: Caitlin Leiper; 3rd: Amelia Whipps; 4th: Zoe Bradford. 12-16 Years Old 1st: Amy Mason; 2nd: Francesca McWade; 3rd (joint): Neil Leiper & Clare Butler. Most Improved Handler Amelia Whipps.Congratulations to all concerned.

At the IKC Celtic Winners Show Green Star Dog,  Celtic Winner and BOB went to the late Dolly Kavanagh's Ch Serenglade Special Design for Denemore, Green Star Bitch and Celtic winner to Diane Mooney's Conysluck Magic Flute, Reserve  GS Dog and Junior Celtic winner to Diane's Conysluck Hal O the Wind and Reserve GS Bitch and Celtic Junior winner to Diane's  Conysluck Megalala.

At the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club BIS went to Jo Davidson Poston's Powdermill Sweet Touch Spinillons bred by Ruth and Ann Weston.

Those who intend to view the newly released film Amazing Grace about William Wilberforce and the abolition of slavery will need to keep an eye out for two papillons that appear in the film. They are Denise Welsh's Harlie and Whizz

In my early days in the breed one of my favourite shows was Guildford & DCS Open Show and I was not alone as although the show was held on a Wednesday it always attracted a good entry. In the 1970's there were quite a few breeders/exhibitors  around the area. I was interested therefore to see that Guildford are again scheduling classes for the breed and that the venue was still at Shalford Par and the show still a Wednesday one. This year it is on May 30th  and the judge will be the well known Peke expert Bert Easdon. Bert of course has judged the breed before. Schedules are now available from Toni Jackson on 020 8224 1125.

The good news is that Phil Shirley has actually arrived back from his great trip, and so will be resuming the breed-note-writing as from next week.  He seems in great form, and he and Rodney obviously had a great time – I was very envious of the trip they had to Egypt and the Pyramids, Valley of the Kings and Luxor, it sounded brilliant – real ‘ancient monuments’ that had been there for thousands of years, and not rebuilt, renovated or otherwise tarted up: the tombs all exactly as they were when they were sealed up – a real trip into the past.

The only show result I have is for Bodmin & C.S. Premier Show, where Sophie Langdon was judging: her BOB was Stanbury’s Inixia Wily Willum, and Sue’s new 6-month-old puppy, Inixia Touched By Magic, won BPIB on his first outing; he then went on to win the Puppy Group under Lorna England, against stiff competition.  It was a two-day show, and Sue was unfortunately not able to get back to Bodmin for the second day to challenge for BPIS, but that’s life.  Many congratulations to her and the two dogs.

On the subject of Inixia, you won’t see Sue for a while, as she is judging in Australia at the New South Wales Papillon (Dog) Club Inc.’s fortieth anniversary Championship Show in Sydney.  The New South Wales Club and our own South Wales Papillon Club are twinned – an excellent idea which the Welsh Club thought up about a year ago: they have donated a trophy, to be engraved, for Best Member’s Exhibit (BIS) in honour of the twinning, to be presented for the first time at this anniversary show.  It sounds as though it’s going to be a great occasion - parades of Veteran dogs and a Puppy Parade as well as the normal classes, a hog-roast to keep up the exhibitors’ strength - and the NSW committee are very pleased to say they have a record entry.  While there, the Stanburys are going to make the most of the trip, staying for three weeks and seeing as much of Australia as they can: visit to Port Douglas and the Great Barrier Reef for under-water exploration and snorkelling, trip by boat through the rain forest, hot-air-ballooning and white-water rafting, plus the more sedate tourist trip round Sydney, visit to the Opera House and (possibly!) walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge!  They return via Singapore, with a tour of that city and a visit to the stunning Botanical Gardens, and get back the day before WELKS – so if Sue falls asleep in the ring, you’ll know why, and be ready to catch her dogs!  And don’t worry about the rest of the Inixia kennel, they have not been put in bed-and-breakfast – Sue’s daughter will be ‘in charge’, with the grandchildren as professional kennel assistants (and they are!).

If anyone has not yet had their schedule for the South of England Open Show on 19 May (entries close 28 April), please ring and I will send.

John and Josie Mann have sadly lost their Ch Graycaz Serendipity. Sarah had been poorly for a little while but it had been hoped that her new medication had improved the situation, indeed she had recently spent a few days with us whilst Josie and John were away and seemed back to her old self, sadly it was not to last long. Sarah had had a super show career and amongst her many awards had been BOB at Crufts in 1998 and BIS at the Papillon Club Of Scotland Championship Show in 1997. Sarah was one of those papillons who was always happy and always looked as if she was smiling and she will be greatly missed not least by her kennel mate Ch Bonifee Happy Persuasion.

Phil Shirley back from a nice long stay in the sunshine of S Africa sent me the following news for the South of England Papillon Club. Unfortunately because of early deadline for Easter it was too late to publish in time nonetheless I am sure some will want to hear about this worthy exercise. I am sure Phil will let me have a full report of how the walk went in due course. "Papillons Walk for Charity" We hope you will be able to join us for our "Papillons walk for Charity" on 14th April 2007. The walk will take place on the morning prior to the AGM of the South of England Papillon Club. By popular demand we are returning this year to the Ridgeway in Berkshire for our walk, meeting at the Ridgeway carpark at 10.30am the walk will set off at 11.00am. The Charity we are supporting this year is Breast Cancer Research UK. We are most grateful for your generous donations in the past to our chosen charities and your support is always most appreciated. If you are unable to join us for the walk but would like to support us, make a donation or please feel free to collect sponsorship and organise your own walk, sponsor forms are available from Phil Shirley and Anne Borg. Please return all sponsor forms and monies to the Secretary at the AGM or as soon as possible after the 14th April. Home cooked lunch will be available at Leckhampstead Village Hall from 12.45pm after the walk and before the AGM which starts at 2.00pm"

At UK Toydogs Bitch CC and BOB went to Pat Munn's Ringlands Kenmill to Poppy Time, with Dog CC going to Sue Stanbury's  Inixia Wily Willum JW Sh.CM - I believe first CC's for both. Reserves went to Jap Ch Smile Line Cover Girl Immortal Gene owned by Pat and her late mother Norma Staff in dogs and in bitches to Brian and Pat Cox's  Ch Wish Upon a Star over Tricianbri Sh.CM. BP went to Pey Robins' Jaroma Glen Tay.

The South Wales Papillon Club recently held their Open Show where BIS went to Shamal Sweet Surprise For Alcala.

Our Dogs

Well it is great to be back from my travels and Im looking forward to hearing all your news especially how your new puppies are doing this year. I have tried to keep up on proceedings but some of the places Rodney and I visited were very remote and it was difficult to concentrate on show results while swimming in the Indian Ocean with temperatures in the high nineties! I know it’s a hard life but someone has to do it.
I must thank Anne Borg for writing the notes in my absence, Anne is a very busy person and Im sure we are all grateful for her sterling efforts.

At the UK Toydog Society Ch Show at Stafford, Carolyn Roe was judging her first Championship toy group and for Best in Show she found: Sparrows, Pomeranian : Ch. Casarows Night Fever, Carolyn wrote an article about the event on her website, she was obviously thrilled to be chosen to judge this major Toy group event. In Papillons the results were as follows: Judges: Dogs Mrs Borghild Moen (Norway), Bitches Mr S Carroll (Ireland) Bitch CC & BOB : Mrs P MUNN Ringlands Kenmill to Poppy Time
Res Bitch CC : Lt Cdr B D S & Mrs P A COX Ch Wish Upon a Star over Tricianbri Sh.CM, Dog CC : Mrs S STANBURY Inixia Wily Willum JW Sh.CM

By popular demand we are returning this year to the lovely setting of the Ridgeway in Berkshire for our walk, meeting at the Ridgeway car park at 10.30am the walk will set off at 11.00am. The Charity we are supporting this year is Breast Cancer Research UK. We are most grateful for your generous donations in the past to our chosen charities and your support is always most appreciated. If you are unable to join us for the walk but would like to support us, make a donation or please feel free to collect sponsorship and organise your own walk, sponsor forms are available from myself or Anne Borg 01865 762201. Please return all sponsor forms and monies to the Secretary at the AGM or as soon as possible after the 14th April. Home cooked lunch will be available at Leckhampstead Village Hall from 12.45pm after the walk and before the AGM, which starts at 2.00pm. So far the club has, on your behalf donated several thousand pounds to various charities, with your help we hope to be able to continue to do so.

With AGMs happening right now, a small reminder to pay your club membership subscriptions, most fall due on the 1st January each year but certainly should be paid before your clubs AGM, if you have omitted to pay your subs this year I am  sure your club treasurer will be pleased to hear from you.

Patricia and Peter Greiff recently had their Golden Wedding Anniversary with a celebration taking place at the Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod Wells. Peter of course is still President of the South Wales Papillon Club and Patricia is a Vice President and I was sorry to hear that Patricia had been poorly. Peter tells me she is now registered partially sighted and cannot walk more than a few yards without becoming breathless due to a heart condition.Their connection with the breed is apparently a very lengthy one. During their first year of marriage they saved up £25 to buy a settee. However, during a Sunday afternoon walk they passed a small local kennel in Brighouse West Yorkshire who was advertising Papillon puppies for sale. They stopped to look at the puppies and the settee had to be abandoned, it was the start of their love affair with Papillons.  They did not show or breed until after Peter retired at age 55 in 1990 due to the onset of arthritis and were active in showing circles for about 14 years. Peter tells me they still have 6 Paps, 5 are veterans and they still give them a lot of pleasure and keep Peter active. I wish I had known beforehand about their Golden Wedding Anniversary as I am sure a lot of folk would have liked to have sent them their best wishes (a reminder to everyone to let me know such things in advance) I am sure however that  both Peter and Patricia would still love to hear from friends albeit belatedly

John Edson, Secretary of the Northern and Eastern Couties Papillon Club, has been poorly and had a recent short stay in hospital. I am pleased to report that he is now back home. Hopefully taking things a little easier and following Doctor's advice!!!

At the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Championship Show Dog CC and BIS went to Jo Davidson-Poston's Ch & Ir Ch Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons Sh.CM bred of course by Rosmeary Ayris.  Bitch CC, RBIS and BOS to Irene and Glen Robb's  Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses, Res Dog CC to Mark Whitehill's Frasermar Lost For Words at Martika and Res Bitch CC to Pauline Wilson's Invergarick Modern Milly JW. BP was Mrs Johnston's Bedellus I'm Sensay Shaunah bred by Pat Bedellus

Our Dogs

I was to hear that the Secretary of the Northern and Eastern Counties Papillon Club, John Edson had been taken into hospital recently, however he sounds to be on the mend as I gather he is now home.

Sharon Mahoney from Australia sent an  e-mail to papnet to say: “Sue Stanbury from Inixia Papillons in England  judged our Papillon Club of New South Wales show today here in Australia with an entry of 128. Our male Aust. Grand Ch/Am Ch Caspian's Terminator (Swd) (imp.USA) (co-owned with Kristy Lewis) was Best in Show following up his Best in Show last year at the same show with another English judge officiating” it will be interesting to hear Sues comments on the dogs when she returns which I think is the day before WELKS.

It was nice to get to Ryton for the Championship show of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club, the Sports Connexion is so uninspiring but the club does its best to make the venue attractive. The two judges:  Mrs C Ahearn (Dogs) and Mr M Quinney (Bitches) had drawn an entry of around 300 dogs between them, they did not need the help of Referee, Anna McKnight as they both agreed on Best in Show  - Ch & Ir Ch Ibstock Bright Spark for Spinillons Sh.CM (Mrs Davidson-Poston), Res Dog CC - Frasermar Lost For Words at Martika (Mr Whitehill) Bitch CC and RBIS and BOS - Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses (Mr & Mrs Robb), Res Bitch CC - Invergarick Modern Milly JW (Mrs Wilson), Best Puppy Bitch and BPIS - Bedellus I'm Sensay Shaunah (Mrs Johnston), Res BPIS - Royal Moonbeam for Creliatown (Mrs Tidmarsh), Best Puppy Dog - Phimeen Benjamin Bunny at Rosenjon (Mrs Hobson), Best Veteran in Show - Omaonaig Polar Sun (Mrs Mooney)

Best Phalene in Show - Serenglade Thackery at Rayol (Mrs Roberts & Miss Smith)

Best Fringes in Show- Tawzan Madame Cezan (Mr & Mrs Stevens)

During the lunch break, the presentations take place to the Juniors for the handler of the year competition, this year the winners were: 6 - 11 years 1st: Rebecca Thompson 2nd: Caitlin Leiper 3rd: Amelia Whipps 4th: Zoe Bradford.  12 - 16 yrs 1st: Amy Mason 2nd: Francesca Mcwade 3rd (Joint): Clare Butler & Neil Leiper. The most improved handler was Amelia Whipps. The annual points trophies were also presented, I am most grateful to Vivien Cotton for sending me the break down of the points winners. I know Viv works extremely hard all year compiling these figures, she is so accurate which is no easy task when dogs names and ownerships change throughout the year, this causes headaches sometimes matching dogs to kennels. A very big thank you goes to Vivien for all her hard work. The principle winners of the trophies for 2006 were: TOP WINNING PAPILLON  (The Ringlands Trophy) & TOP BITCH  (The Elendil Trophy) Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses, TOP DOG  (The Shimna Trophy) Ch Caswell Classic Tri, TOP CH. SHOW CLASS WINNING PAPILLON  (The Graycaz Trophy) Feorlig Midnight In Georgia JW, TOP PUPPY  (The Kuruso Trophy) Bodebi Rhythm Is A Dancer,      TOP OWNER  (The Monamie Trophy) & TOP BREEDER  (The Joan Brown Rose Bowl)  Gleniren Mr G & Mrs I Robb,  TOP BROOD BITCH  (The Greenhedges Trophy & The Brood Bitch and Progeny Cup) Elvistime Lady Holly At Bodebi ,  TOP STUD DOG  (The Miss Taylor Stud Dog Trophy & The Charthamcoombe Tristam Trophy) Daneview Rhythm & Blues. Many congratulations to all the winners.

I am very grateful to Linda Townsend and Eilish Nealey for sending over the

results from the Ireland Combined Canine Club International Championship Show. Under FCI rules,  Papillons and Phalenes are judged as separate breeds, the results are as follows:

BOB, CACIB & GSD - Ch Serenglade Special Design for Denemore (The Late Mrs. W. Kavanagh), RGSD & RCACIB - Ch Austrene I'm Electric (Mrs. M. Sloan), GSB - Denemore Icons Butterfly (The Late Mrs. W. Kavanagh), Bitch CACIB & RGSB - Conysluck Magic Flute (Mrs. D. Mooney) Res Bitch CACIB - Belvisaj I Have A Dream (Mrs. S. Belshaw). Phalenes: BOB Mooney's OMAONAIG SEA BIRD ( Green Star Winner), RBOB Sloan's SUNSHOO IM A SPECIAL EDITION GLENREN ( Green Star Winner) .

Rosemary Hobson had a good Easter Weekend having taken good results at the Club Ch. show on Sunday then on Bank Holiday Monday she went to Keighley and Dist. Open show where she took BP with Phimeen Benjamin Bunny of Rosenjon, she won Junior with another of her puppies, BOB went to L Crawley’s Garbreisa Periwinkle. Rosemary’s grandson, Josh Howarth won the 6-11 year JH classes and went on to win best Junior Handler in show, Josh, who is only 7 years old certainly has a promising future in handling.  I watched him very confidently handling his puppy at the club show to win best M Puppy Dog.

I will be pleased to hear your news, im sure some of you have a few “brags” to share.

27 April
Dog World

My apologies to Ruth Johnston for not making it clearer that the BPIS at the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club Championship Show, Bedellus I'm  Sensay  Shaunal  at  Dourhu was owned by her. On the original report I received the well own Dourhu affix was omitted otherwise there would have been no doubts.

At the PCA Specialty held this year in Texas the BIS again went to a dog bred in Japan but from all British breeding. This time it was AmCH Queen Bless JP Principal Kid bred by Chie Ejima and owned by her jointly with  Mabeline Mosing and Elizabeth Pyatte.. A result which pleased Mark and I as Kid's sire was our own Jap Ch Nouveau Lord of Misrule. The dam, Jap Ch.Queen Bless Elijah Of Art Etoile Jp, whilst herself bred in Japan has a UK Sire and Dam - Glasafon Gordon's Lad and EngCh&IntCh&Jkc.BISCh Gonmyn Inspiration.

The South Of England Papillon Club's Open Show to be held at the usual venue in Chievely will again have plenty of prize money on offer - this time over £300 - including specials for Best Veteran and Best Phalene. The judge this year is Liz Bartram with Sue Obbard judging the JHA and Welfare Classes. Sue has kindly offered to paint the portrait of the winning dogs of the welfare classes on china plates. And of course the usual good food at very reasonable prices will be available along with free tea and coffee all day - that can't be bad can it?? Trophies should be returned in time for the show (May 19) entries for the show close on 28 April.

Talking of show entries reminds me that the Derbyshire County show have their centenary Show on Sunday 24th June. Anyone travelling back down south from Blackpool might want to stop off on route home. There will be three classes judged by Roger Thomas. Held at the Elvaston Showground, near Derby I am told it  really is a lovely show, the agricultural part is wonderful with  horse displays and agility, farm animals, food stalls etc so worth going along for the whole experience.

Our Dogs

Well news is coming in thick and fast, so please keep it coming. Firstly from Denise Welsh of Kazim Papillons, her young bitch, Angel ( Bedellus Heaven Sent to Kazim), won the beginners Agility at the UKA show over the weekend, this qualifies her for the final in July, she also came 2nd in the jumping and had a run off in the steeplechase, her time being 19.54 seconds (she took a wide turn or she would have been faster, Denise admits a handler error) well done to both Denise and Angel. Denise also asked me to mention the new KC ruling that all dogs that enter the Papillon Limited Agility Show must have been measured prior to the show or they cannot compete. The show is a first for the breed if not for toy dogs in general, organised by the South of England Papillon Club it will be the first KC licensed Papillon Limited Agility Show, there are now many “stars” in Papillon agility and hopefully this show will bring them all together to show us what they can do. The show is on 21st July at Bradfield, judging starts at 10am and will precede the clubs Fun Day so I do hope as many of you as possible will come along to support our agility Papillons and also to stay on for our Fun Day, always a great day out. Schedules for the show can be obtained from Denise or downloaded from www.agilitynet.com

Another couple of excellent results reached my ears: at Wickford and Basildon Open Show, Mr and Mrs Footes, Southanning Top Hat won Reserve Best in Show, whilst over at Norfolk and Norwich Open Show, Viv and Kevin Butlers home bred Aristopaps Ruf Ooligan at his last show in puppy went right through and took Best Puppy in Show. So congratulations on both of those impressive wins.

Congratulations are also in order to Peter and Patricia Grieff who celebrated their Golden Wedding last month, im sure we all wish them many more years of happiness together.

Peter sent me the following: “As you know I am still President of the South Wales Papillon Club and Patricia is a Vice President. I have asked to be replaced, as I can no longer do justice to the position due to Patricia's health condition.

During our first year of marriage we saved up £25 for a new settee. However one Sunday afternoon we walked past a Kennel advertising Papillon puppies for sale. We went in to have a look and so started our love affair with the Papillons, the settee had to wait! Rusticana went with us everywhere.  I recall one holiday in Blackpool; the Landlady would look after the children in an evening but not the dog. So we took him to the Frankie Vaughan Show in Patricia's bucket bag (a ladies fashion item at that time). During the interval a towel was placed over the bag and it came off when the lights turned off. We could trust him absolutely to behave. I would not like to risk anything like that with any dogs we have at the moment. We still have 6 Papillons, 5 are veterans and of course we no longer show or breed but we still get a lot of pleasure from them and help to keep me active”

I am sure many of you have stories connected to your “early days” in the breed, why not share a few?

The Papillon Club of America recently held their National Speciality in San Antonio, Texas and many congratulations go to Chie Emija who bred the Best in Show winner and to owners: Mabeline Mosing, Chie Ejima, & Elizabeth Pyatte: BIS was American CH Queen Bless JP Principal Kid. I am most grateful to Mike Foster for researching the background to the breeding of this dog: Kid has entirely UK bloodlines. His sire: Jap. Ch Nouveau Lord of Misrule was of course bred in the UK by Mike and Mark and his dam Ch.Queen Bless Elijah Of Art Etoile Jp, whilst herself bred in Japan has a UK Sire and Dam – Glasafon Gordon's Lad bred by Jean Leverett and EngCh&IntCh&Jkc.BISCh Gonmyn Inspiration, bred by the late Maurice Gonsalves.

The annual “Papillons Walk for Charity” took place last weekend on the Ridgeway, prior to the AGM of the South of England Papillon Club. Again this year the generosity of sponsors and the dedication of collectors has been fantastic, although there is still pledged amounts to be collected the total looks to be in the region of £1300 which this year goes to Breast Cancer Research UK, if you have collected or pledged money or would still like to do so please contact me as soon as possible, that we may send off the final amount to this very worthy charity.

Lots of cash (over £300) in prize money is on offer at the South of England Papillon Open Show at Chieveley, including specials for Best Veteran and Best Phalene. This year Liz Bartram is judging the breed and Sue Obbard will judge the JHA and Welfare classes, Sue has kindly offered to paint the portrait of the winning dogs of the welfare classes on china plates. There is always good food available at very reasonable prices also available is free tea and coffee all day. Entries close 28th April. Those of you lucky enough to win trophies last year please note: trophies should be returned in time for presentation at this coming show, please contact Trophy Steward Rita Dack 01775 821717 – thank you.
